While a new crop of smartphones has just been released in the U.S., the Japanese aren’t going to fall behind anytime soon. They just upped the ante with the new Sharp Aquos Phone Zeta SH-02E, which is the first production smartphone with an IGZO display.

What’s so interesting about IGZO? The indium gallium zinc oxide tech promises higher translucency, compared to regualr LCDs, which reduces the energy needed for backlighting and thus saves power – and the backlight is usually the number one consumer of power in mobile devices. The 2,000 mAh battery is no slouch either, though it’s unknown how much battery life is actually improved by the IGZO display.

The phone has a large 4.9-inch screen with 1,280 × 720 resolution, and a 16 MP camera. It has a 1.5 GHz S4 Pro quad-core processor and has NFC-compatibility. Hopefully we’ll get something like this in the States soon.

[CEATEC 2012] All right, Sharp is really pushing the boundaries when it comes to the resolution count on tiny displays where smartphones and other portable devices are concerned. I am referring to this 6.1″ IGZO display that will carry a phenomenal 498ppi, definitely a pixel density count that is far higher than any other which we have seen in the past and on current devices, making us wonder if someone out there is interested in churning out a tablet that carries a 6.1″ display or not. Surely this is an entertaining enough thought, don’t you think so?

Not only that, the 6.1″ IGZO display comes with a resolution count of 2,560 x 1,600, which is basically a case of your regular 30″ desktop monitor being shrunk down in size to just 6.1″ while maintaining its resolution count. It sure as heck is going to be an expensive affair if it sees the light of day in future devices, and we do wonder just how much juice does this particular display consume?

Alongside the slew of 90-inch TVs, Sharp also used this year’s IFA to show off something a little less glamorous. Its IGZO technology (that’s indium gallium zinc oxide, kids) was developed in conjunction with the Semiconductor Energy Laboratory. According to Sharp, the displays “have a significantly higher translucency [compared to traditional LCD TFT displays]. This improvement means that smaller or fewer LEDs are needed for the backlighting.” The result is less power consumption for high-res displays and higher sensitivity on touchscreens, with far less noise to contend with.

The company plans to create three panel sizes to start: 10-inch (2560 x 1600), seven-inch (1280 x 800) and 32-inch (3840 x 2160). Sharp was also demoing a prototype seven-inch tablet (which you can see in the gallery below) alongside the displays. The representative we spoke with wouldn’t reveal anything about specific products the company plans to produce using the technology, but did tell us that we can expect to see some IGZO products in 2013.
