IKEA Expedit Workstation Hack: Bibiophiles Rejoice!

I use IKEA Stolmen components as my library shelves, but this sweet setup makes me think that the Expedit series could be even more versatile. This convenient workstation was nested inside an Expedit bookshelf, allowing its owner to maximize the efficiency of his available space.

Space was at a premium in Jason Outlaw’s one bedroom apartment. So he decided to use his Expedit as not only his bookshelf, but as his computer workstation and a TV stand. Jason added IKEA Non-Spotlights to add a bit of light, but the cooler, energy-efficient LED Dioders could work pretty well too. A slide-out Kensington keyboard holder fit his MacBook perfectly. Because of the depth of the shelves, his radio and receiver are hidden away behind books, and speakers are used as bookends. When not in use, the TV is covered up by a removable art panel.

It’s a cool hack, though I prefer large desks to allow my clutter to spread out.

Robots to assemble your IKEA furniture

One thing about bringing home IKEA furniture is this – you will need to do your bit to assemble the particular piece of furniture, and for folks who are not too great when it comes to the assembly instructions, there is help. It will most probably be far more expensive than paying a small fee to the IKEA man to assemble your furniture assuming this furniture assembling robot takes off, but it sure as heck is a novelty worth exploring. A group of researchers have managed to find a way to program robots so that they are able to convert a set of instructions into commands – followed by executing them, of course.

Niel Dantam, one of the researchers behind the project, said, “You want to somehow capture the important aspects of the human’s motion and transfer that to the robot. Think about how you’d tell someone how to make a cake. An adult might bend down over the counter to work while a child may stand on tiptoes.”

This algorithm speculated on robots assembling IKEA furniture on their own, as the IKEA furniture assembly system boasts of an extremely versatile architecture, making it ideal to test out such an algorithm which will definitely make full use of nearly all possible ways in delivering a robust and ideal mobile manipulation system. How much do you think such a robot is going to cost you?

Inhabitat’s Week in Green: solar panel printer, gold producing bacteria and a life-size of horse made of computer keys

Each week our friends at Inhabitat recap the week’s most interesting green developments and clean tech news for us — it’s the Week in Green.

DNP Inhabitat's Week in Green tktktk

Inhabitat is always interested in finding innovative uses for old technology, and this week we saw artists and designers from around the world produce new things from old, unused or outmoded gadgets. In Osaka, a local goldfish club has been transforming old phone booths into gigantic public fish tanks. In another large-scale art installation, Babis Panagiotidis used 18,000 recycled computer keys to make a life-size rocking horse. London artist Leonardo Ulian also makes beautiful, ornate mandalas from bits and pieces of old circuitry. And Benjamin Yates makes his unique coffee tables from recycled circuit boards, old VCRs and computer components.

Guy Makes Mobile Office from IKEA Parts

Hey, when you have a new baby you have to make some major sacrifices. Less video games, maybe free up some room in the home. Stuff like that. IKEA Hacker Ian from Los Angeles had to give up his home office when a new baby was on the way. Well, he took it as a challenge and created an impressive mobile home office built out of IKEA pieces.

ikea table mod 1 Ian took an IKEA stainless steel kitchen work table, some IKEA computer tower desk trays, two steel tabletops, and two grated steel shelves and made a mobile “office” that could be packed away into a closet when not in use. Judging by the images, he did an awesome job. You can check out a more detailed image of the entire build here.

Well done Ian. How much do you want to bet this thing turns into a diaper changing table as well?

Ikea to sell only LED-based lighting by 2016, wants to be greener than your sofa bed

Ikea to sell only LEDbased lighting by 2016, wants to be greener than your sofa bed

While some wouldn’t necessarily associate Ikea with eco-friendliness given that its business revolves around plywood, the furniture chain has just staked out a clearer position as a green pioneer. It’s phasing out sales of all lighting that isn’t LED-based by 2016, making it the first major home furnishing shop with a US presence to entirely banish less efficient illumination. Ikea also wants to take advantage of its economies of scale with the “lowest price on the market” for LEDs, which could shake up an industry where anything beyond incandescent technology usually carries a premium. We’ll still have some time to wait for the full switch, but the company at least plans to practice what it preaches by replacing over a million store lights with LEDs — so those of us with no light replacement plans can still feel as green as the Beddinge Håvet we’re taking home.

Ikea Photoshops Women Out of Saudi Arabia Catalog [Photoshop]

Ikea prints 208 million catalogs in 43 countries every year. They are all the same, except in Saudi Arabia, where women have been Photoshopped out because their photos “show too much skin,” according to the Islamic Kingdom’s laws. And it’s not the only thing that gets altered. More »

Ikea Will Only Sell LED Lights Soon [Lighting]

By now, energy- and cash-conscious people probably know it’s a good idea to use compact fluorescent or halogen bulbs instead of incandescents. But Ikea wants to help move the needle further and faster towards energy-efficient lighting: The company says that by 2016 it will only sell LED lights. More »

IKEA Brings X-Ray Vision to its Catalogs

This isn’t the first time a company has tried incorporating technology into catalogs. Remember how Moosejaw released an app with their catalog that let shoppers (and the occasional pervert) see through the models’ clothing.

Now IKEA is doing the same thing, minus the sexy models, replaced with lots of hard-to-assemble home furnishings.

As if there weren’t enough IKEA junkies already.

IKEA makes use of Augmented Reality to the fullest though, from allowing customers to see through cabinets and dresses to displaying additional furniture configurations to make the buying process easier.

Here’s a clip that shows off how it works:

IKEA Kitchen Handle Hacked Into iPad Stand

While holding your iPad in your hands in typically the way you use a tablet, sometimes it’s nice to set it in a stand so you can watch movies, read recipes, or use it as a photo frame. This simple hack allows you to easily prop up your iPad on a flat surface. It’s pretty smart, and won’t cost you much.

You wouldn’t think that a curtain rod and a kitchen handle could be matched together to make an iPad stand, but Theo Gough made it work. Hot glue was used to mate them, and the stand works in landscape and portrait mode. The items used for this hack are no longer stocked at IKEA, but other similar pieces could probably be used.

This stand doesn’t just work for iPads. Most tablets will be able to fit in this minimal stand.

Ikea Uses Fake, Digitally Created Rooms Inside Its Catalog [Ikea]

When you’re flipping through the IKEA catalog and wondering how they make all that easy-to-assemble furniture look so good inside that lovely apartment, know this: it’s fake. As in, it doesn’t exist. As in, it was made on a computer by a 3D graphic artist. More »
