11 Splendid Roald Dahl Illustrations Let You Revisit Your Childhood

Let’s be honest: Roald Dahl books don’t really need illustrations. The famed British author was such a visual and visceral writer that you could just close your eyes and see Matilda skipping off to school or the Fantastic Mr. Fox plotting his next act of mischief. That said, when illustrators do take on the subject matter, the results are simply wonderful.

These Adorable GIFs Are Like Tiny Moving Picture Books

Only a handful of individuals have succeeded in making the GIF into something artful. We can definitely add artist and designer Guillaume Kurkdjian to that list, because his collection of lovely, child-like animations are dioramas of whimsical delight.

Portal Shock Infinite: What if Portals and Tears Were Connected?

I’ve been playing through BioShock: Infinite for the last couple of weeks, and one thought that kept popping into my head was what would happen if Elizabeth’s “tearing” ability let her access other video games? Well, illustrator Nick Minor (aka Radiant Grey) had the same thought, and came up with this Portal/BioShock Infinite mashup…

portal shock infinite

It really would be cool if you could hop through a tear and end up in a test chamber. Or better yet, escape from GLaDoS and Wheatley by jumping through to Columbia. Of course, then you’d have to deal with Mechanical Patriots and the Handyman, which make the enemies of Portal seem pretty tame by comparison.

Pick up an 11×17 print of this brilliant mashup over at Radiant Grey’s Etsy shop for $9.99(USD). Not that it really needs saying, but that version comes without the giant watermark in the middle of Elizabeth’s back.

Predator Kills the Star Wars Universe, Gets a Cool Trophy of Fett’s Head as Its Prize

You take the bounty hunters from Star Wars and you take Predator and you put them together in the same room. The result is geek magic. This is an amazing piece of art that I would love to own. Hell, I would love to see this crossover in the theater.

predator kills star wars
This image is part one of a series by Rhymesyndicate. Vader has assembled the bounty hunters. He’s probably giving them a stern talking to, when suddenly a Predator decloaks.(I’m guessing that’s what went down before this scene.) A split second later Boba Fett is missing his head and the Predator has himself a sweet trophy.

The tagline “Predator kills the Star Wars universe” is a play on words from Marvel comics’ “Punisher kills the Marvel universe”. Funny thing is that Vader doesn’t even look all that pissed. He’s just like, “WTF?… I’m working here!”

Terminator Tattoos: I Need Your Clothes, Your Boots, Your Motorcycle and Your Ink

Maybe it’s because I don’t want to see what they’ll look like when I’m old and shriveled up, or maybe it’s just because I have a low threshold for pain that I’ve never had the desire to get a tattoo. That said, If I did have the balls to get inked, I’d hire artist Yomico Moreno to do the job.

The Venezuelan tattoo artist is known for creating an incredible sense of depth and dimensionality in his designs, with many of his images looking like what you’d see if you peeled back the flesh and looked underneath.

His most incredible designs reveal muscle, flesh, blood and sometimes even the mechanical structures like those you’d find in a cyborg – if cyborgs existed.

Sure, his designs are quite disturbing, but they’re also totally awesome. For now, though, I’m sticking to the temporary tattoos you might find in a old box of Cracker Jacks.

Psychedelic Plumber: Mario on ‘Shrooms

I always wondered if any of the fungi in the Mushroom Kingdom were hallucinogenic – especially the ones that turned Mario into a flying raccoon or made him bigger. Well now we have our answer.

psychedelic plumber

In Josh Mirman’s illustration, Psychedelic Plumber, we get a look at Mario the way that he might have looked if we were eating some of the same ‘shrooms that he did. Actually, I always imagined that this is what the world looks like when you eat one of those Mario stars.

The image is comprised of colorful triangles which will definitely drive your eyes wild if you look at them for too long. That said, it would be cool if Nintendo made a Mario game using triangular shapes instead of square pixels.

Hylian Banknotes: Link’s Aching Back Would Love These

I’m not sure, but the reason why most early video games had coins or gems for currency was because of graphical limitations. It’s easier to present a recognizable coin than paper money. But if Link was real I’m sure he’d rather have these neat banknotes instead of Rupees. Especially if one of them has a drawing of him on it.

Game of Thrones Playing Cards: Poker is Coming

Game of Thrones is one of my favorite shows on TV in years, but I’ve been trying to find ways to pass the time while waiting for the return of the show on March 31. I’m a gambler too, so I think a few hands of poker could be a good time-killer until the return of the Starks, Lannisters, Targaryens, Baratheons, and all of the other denizens of Westeros in about a month and a half.

game of thrones cards 1

These hand-illustrated Game of Thrones playing cards were designed by artist Paul Nojima after getting the idea from a concept design he saw from artist Jim Tuckwell. While Tuckwell had only designed a handful of cards, while Nojima has actually produced an entire deck of cards.

The deck is printed on high quality 310gsm card stock, and includes illustrations of all of your favorite (and most hated) characters on the face cards, and the Aces have been illustrated with sigils from four houses. I also love how the Jokers are Lord Baelish and Lord Varis – how perfect is that?

You can get your hands on a deck of these Game of Thrones cards over on Etsy for $20. They’re also available in an faux aged version, if you’re into that sort of thing.
