Hate Mail: When You Care Enough to Send the Very Worst

I bet that almost everyone wants to send hate mail at some point in their life, but only a few of us actually go ahead and do it. One day, London-based illustrator Mr. Bingo sent a stranger, Jonathan Hopkins, an offensive postcard. It was passed around and enjoyed by quite a few people, so he opened a service where people could request that an abusive message be sent on their behalf.

The rules of Hate Mail mean that each of the postcard art pieces is to be completely random. Specific requests aren’t allowed. Mr. Bingo states that he isn’t responsible or liable for anyone suffering emotional damage as a result of Hate Mail.

And while you might not ever get your hands on an original one of these postcards, Mr. Bingo has produced over 400 illustrations to date, and they are now available as a book for all to enjoy.

The Hate Mail service is still available, but only in the UK. Since it’s been quite popular, it’s only open sporadically. Check out the video below for a profile on Mr. Bingo and the story behind his Hate Mail series (NSFW: Language).

Mixed up Mickey Mouse

Who’s the leader of the club that’s made for you and me? M-I-C-K-E-Y-M-O-U-S-E! But did you know that when Mickey Mouse isn’t leading the Mouseketeers, he’s going through life masquerading as other animated characters? At least that’s what I’ve been led to believe by these amusing Mickey mashups by artist Nicholas “Harshness” Hyde.

The series envisions Mickey assuming the form of other iconic characters, including Sonic the Hedgehog, Papa Smurf, Snoopy, Bugs Bunny and Garfield the cat. My personal fave is Pikachu, so that’s why he got the big hero image above.

They’re available as prints from Harshness’ Etsy shop, though they’re a little tricky to find – but it’s not like there aren’t plenty of other cool designs to keep you occupied over there while you poke around.

Merrio Christmas!

Merry Christmas and happy holidays to one and all! While here on Earth, your presents should have been delivered under the tree by a fat, bearded man who came down the chimney and ate your cookies (boy that sounds a bit creepy when I say it that way), if you happen to live in the Mushroom Kingdom, Santa has a unique way of delivering presents.

He’s also much skinner than I remember him. I wonder what’s in the box? I sure hope it’s not another lousy gold coin. The value of gold isn’t what it once was in the Kingdom. I blame King Koopa and his economic policies. I was really hoping for a Fire Flower this year. Or maybe a Tanooki suit.

Thanks to Metin Seven of Seven’s Heaven for sending along this Merrio Christmas illustration. Be sure to check out his site for more great graphic design and illustrations.

2013 Robot Calendar: A ‘Bot for Every Month

Robots can serve a wide variety of purposes, ranging from security, to surveillance to making breakfast. So why not celebrate robotic diversity next year with this awesome 2013 robot calendar?

robot calendar 2

Designed by Fifty Five Hi’s in collaboration with Justin Mezzell, the 4-color screenprinted, 16×24 wall calendar features a different robot for each month. But they’re not just any robots, no. Each one represents its month in its own special robotic way.

For instance, there’s a robot leprechaun for March, a robot scarecrow for September, and a not-so-tasty robot turkey for Thanksgiving. Say, wasn’t there a robot turkey on an episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force?

The 2013 Robot Calendar sells for $24.99(USD), and is being produced in a limited run of just 200, each hand-numbered. Grab one before they’re all gone over at Fifty Five Hi’s.

How Disney Might Update Star Wars Characters

Now that Disney has purchased Lucasfilm, you might be wondering what sort of stuff we might expect from this $4 billion marriage. While there’s word of Episode VII (and possibly VIII and IX) finally going into production, there are also some less-than-exciting possibilities – like these reimagined, Disnified versions of Star Wars characters by illustrator John Martz.

Though I do think the R2-D2/Wall-E and Ewok/Poo concepts could actually be improvements upon the original characters, I’m not too keen on Yoda with Mickey Mouse ears, or Slave Ariel. And I’m not even going to mention Jar-Jar Goofy.

Oh, and I know you’re thinking it. Han slurped first.

Pokémon Eye Chart: Gotta See ‘Em All

Here’s a clever eye chart that replaces the letters with silhouettes of various Pokémon. It’s a bit deceptive though, because even if you have perfect vision you can’t catch them all. The bottom ones are more pixel monsters than pocket monsters. Then again the actual poster is 12″ x 18″ so maybe they’re all discernible there.

I bet Brock wouldn’t even be able to see Pikachu. Head to DesignNoy’s Etsy page and pay $12 (USD) to order the Pokémon eye chart.

Pokémon Anatomy: Artist Uses Imagination! It’s Super Effective!

Illustrator Ryan Mauskopf made a series of illustrations of fictional Japanese anatomy charts of the original starter Pokémon – Bulbasaur, Charmander and Squirtle. Professor Oak would be so proud.

He made the illustrations for Busted Tees, where he works as a designer. Busted Tees wisely turned them into T-shirts.

Wacom announces Cintiq 22HD pen display, we go handson video

Oh, to sit in a darkened room all day and get paid to do art. No phone calls, no stress, and no technology except for a PC and a brand new $1,999 Wacom Cintiq 22HD tablet display (and maybe also a pair of equally well-engineered Beyerdynamics). Alas, only our Distro magazine crew get to live like that — the rest of the Engadget team must make do with spec sheets and quick hands-on impressions, which are precisely what you’ll find after the break.
