Bing Image Match Announced

Bing Image Match AnnouncedIn the summer of 2011, the de facto Internet search engine for many, Google, introduced the Search By Image feature that enabled users to locate (or at least it tries to) just where a particular photo has been used on other websites. How long does it take for one of Google’s major rivals to “reply”’ to Search By Image? Slow and steady might win the race, although it is not likely that this will happen anytime soon as nearly three years down the road, Microsoft has introduced a similar functionally to its Bing search engine, calling it Image Match.

Bing adds licensing rights refinement to image search

    Image

Here’s a nice little feature for those of us who love to post images on the internet. Bing has added the ability to refine image results by license. The addition’s simple enough to use — just do a search and pull the appropriate license from a drop down on the top of the results page, alongside options for date, size and color. Selections include public domain and options like “free to modify, share and use,” based on the Creative Commons licensing system, so there’s no doubt as to precisely how you can incorporate them into your own posts. Google’s had a similar option on its own search engine for some time — albeit one’s that’s a bit less prominently displayed.

Google Adds Animated Filter In Image Search For GIFs

Google Adds Animated Filter In Image Search For GIFs

GIFs are very popular on the internet. They have been around for over two decades and don’t seem to be going anywhere any time soon. They’re short and often hilarious animations used by an insane amount of people. Many actually have their own GIF collection that they’re very proud of. Google announced today that it has now added the Animated filter in image search. This will allow users to filter image search results for GIFs. Its simple, but very useful indeed.

They’ve also added another filter that allows users to search for clipart with transparent background. This will also prove to be quite useful, all users have to do when searching for clipart is to select the Transparent filter from the Any color dropdown box. These new filters greatly improve the search experience for GIFs and background free cliparts. Google has just made the announcement right now, the filters have yet to be rolled out in image search. Though I hardly suspect that it will take a lot of time. So how many of you are going to substantially increase your GIF collection once these filters roll out?

Graphics Processors Push Computer Vision Ahead

Graphics Processors Push Computer Vision Ahead

At GTC 2013, NVIDIA has demonstrated their version of Image Search, which was powered by their massively parallel processors. The goal of computer vision is to be able to recognize and understand what things are – not merely “seeing” them. This is a very intricate problem since computers are fast but fairly dumb (out of the box). They have no notion of “concepts”, unlike humans who can be shown one object, like a hat, then are able to recognize new hats as they see them. That’s because humans can acquire a notion of what a “hat” is. (more…)
