Roku's official iOS and Android remote apps add 'Play on Roku' to stream music and pics

Along with price and release date details of its new Streaming Stick plus the launch of Vudu, Roku is announcing upgrades for its mobile remote control apps. Hinted at earlier this year when software updates went out to its newer boxes preparing them for future upgrades, the updates for its official app on Android and iOS bring a new “Play on Roku” feature. While it’s not quite as feature-filled as AirPlay or DLNA streaming, it will allow owners to present images (JPG or PNG) and DRM-free music files (MP3 or M4A) right through their home theater with the press of a button. The update also includes international support, the ability to name different Roku boxes, a one touch quick rewind button and a few other tweaks. Currently there’s no support for video or anything else more complicated, but we’re told this is a first step as it plans to build up the second screen experience going forward. Hit your respective app stores to try out the new feature yourself, or check out the press release and demo video after the break.

Alleged Photos of Final iPhone 5 Leak Just Before the Event [Rumors]

French site Nowhereelse claims to have found photos of what seems to be a complete, final version of the iPhone 5. It sure looks like a shiny iPhone 5 fresh out of the factory. More »

Firefox OS Marketplace appears in leaked images

Those of you hankering for another look at the incoming Firefox OS will be happy with this next piece of news. Engadget is playing host to a collection of leaked images that show off the Firefox OS Marketplace, giving us an idea of how we’ll shop for apps using the OS. Of course, we use the term “shop” loosely since all of the apps that appear in the images are being offered for free, but what can you do?

The fact that all of the apps pictured are available for free suggests that Mozilla has yet to work out a pricing scheme (or payment methods) for the Marketplace, but with the OS not launching until 2013, it has time to figure that out. Naturally, a number of apps will be available for the reasonable price of absolutely nothing, but expect to see some paid apps on offer as well.

The Firefox OS Markerplace is obviously geared toward easy searching, and like most app stores, selecting an app you’re interested in will take you to a page that offers descriptions and ratings. The Marketplace looks a little rough around the edges in this early state, but for the most part it also looks like Mozilla has almost everything in place. This suggests that Mozilla is pretty far along in the production of the Marketplace, which is something to get excited about if you’re looking forward to Firefox OS.

That being said, keep in mind that the Marketplace as we see it today could change – perhaps radically – by the time Firefox OS is released. Speaking of that, we don’t have a solid release date yet, as Mozilla is sticking to an “early 2013″ release window for the first Firefox OS devices, which will be coming from Telefonica. Be sure to peruse our story timeline below for more information on Firefox OS!

iPhone 5 gets revamped earphones in new video

When Apple unveils the iPhone 5 at that rumored September 12 event, it will apparently be doing so with a new set of earphones. A video showing off these new earphones has popped up on Vietnamese site Tinhte.vn, giving us a look at what may come packaged with the next generation iPhone. If this is the real deal, then it would appear that Apple’s earbuds have undergone a pretty big redesign.

The video you see below originally had sound, but a new version without any audio has since been uploaded in the original’s place. Luckily, MacRumors was able to translate the audio before that switch occurred. Apparently these new earphones are smaller than Apple’s traditional earbuds (though only slightly, judging by the comparison pictures), and it seems that they would fit the ear better than the older round shape. It isn’t exactly a secret that Apple’s earbuds weren’t the most comfortable things to wear, and indeed, Tinhte says that these new ones don’t hurt when put them in your ears.

Tinhte also says that each earpiece is made in such a way that it looks like it’s all one “fully integrated, single unit.” This means that these earphones might not come apart as easily, which should be welcomed change since the old earbuds could feel a little fragile at times. Have a look at the video below to get a first glimpse at what may just be the iPhone’s redesigned earphones:

If Apple is planning a new design for the next iPhone like some of the rumors claim, it wouldn’t surprise us at all to see the earbuds undergo a reboot as well. The last few weeks have brought a pretty steady stream of parts leaks, and in just 10 short days we should be finding out if any of them were legitimate. Keep it here at SlashGear for more information, and be sure to check out our timeline below for the latest iPhone 5 rumors.

Nokia Lumia 820 prototype breaks cover in photos, confirms little else

Nokia 820 prototype breaks cover in photos, confirms little else

Renders, shmenders. According to Coolxap.com what you see above is a real-world prototype of the Nokia Lumia 820 — aka Nokia Arrow. As well as some tantalizing hardware shots, we get a sneaky glimpse at that all important “About phone” page. All we can see, though, is that it’s running Windows Phone 8 (shock) and has only 335MB of RAM? Though, being a prototype, that’s likely to change. Sadly little else of note, but it’s at least good to see that while the mock-ups were close, the real thing has a little more going for it.

Windows Phone 8 to feature ‘Kid’s Corner’ home screen for children

Windows Phone 8 is bringing a lot of new features with it when it arrives later this year, but one of the more intriguing (and welcome) features is apparently called “Kid’s Corner.” Spotted by The Verge, this new feature gives children their own home screen – one that their parents have complete control over. Parents can share apps, games, and other content with the Kid’s Corner, meaning that when their children use their specially made home screen, they’ll have access to that shared content, but nothing else on the phone.

Once Kid’s Corner has been set up, it can be accessed by swiping from the left on the home screen. To exit Kid’s Mode, one only has to press the power button. As you can see from the images, the name and color of Kid’s Mode is customizable, and it’s a feature that should be hitting all Windows Phone 8 devices.

We have to say that this a pretty genius feature to include with Windows Phone 8. Kids love smartphones as much as adults do, but the problem with that comes from the fact that not everything on a smartphone is appropriate for young children. Things like dialers and app stores can be pretty dangerous in the hands of a young child, and it seems that Kid’s Corner will be able to block children from accessing those.

Kid’s Corner hasn’t been officially unveiled by Microsoft yet, but those images do seem to confirm that such a feature exists. One thing is for sure though: if this is a real feature of Windows Phone 8, then Microsoft will likely be able to win over the hearts of quite few parents. Keep an ear to SlashGear, as we’ll have more information for you once Microsoft spills the beans.

Mars Curiosity leaves its landing area, heads to distant frontier a quarter-mile away

DNP Mars Curiosity leaves its landing area, heads to distant frontier ok, 50 feet

Now that Curiosity has survived its thrill-a-minute landing and passed an upgrade and physical with (nearly) flying colors, the rover is off to earn its $2 billion keep. The buggy got off to a good start, driving 52 feet towards its first science site “beautifully, just as our rover planners designed it,” according to NASA. The destination, Glenelg, is 1,500 feet away from the now-familiar Bradbury Landing where it first set down, which is pretty far for a rover that treks along at about a tenth of a mile per hour. On top of that, its minders have some stops in mind to test instruments — meaning it’ll arrive there in about two weeks. Once at Glenelg, Curiousity will scope the unusual geology of the region, though its principal destination for science is Mount Sharp, a relatively vast six miles away. Don’t worry about it running out of gas, though — it’s nuclear power supply will last a full Martian year, or 687 earth days.

Voice signals sent to Mars and back, while telephoto images tease rich geology

Voice signals sent to Mars and back, while telephoto images tease rich geology

The Martian hills are alive with the sound of music. Well, NASA Administrator Charles Bolden’s voice at least, as the agency reveals that the first recorded human voice has traveled from Earth, to another planet, and back. The words might not have literally echoed in the surrounding hills, but by having been beamed to Curiosity and back again, have made a small step towards interplanetary communication. Along with the motivational words of Bolden, the rover returned some telephoto images from the onboard 100mm and 34mm lenses. The pictures show the hills toward which Curiosity is bound, and tease the scientists with their rich-looking — and hopefully revealing — layers of geology. Want to know what interplanetary voicemail sounds like? No need to go to Mars and back, just click on the more coverage link below.

Leaked LG Intuition image gives away possible release date

Well this is interesting: the folks over at DroidDog have come across a new press shot for the LG Intuition, and this leaked image might just give us some insight on when the phone will launch. The hint appears to be hidden in the date displayed on the phone: September 15, 2012. While that may seem like nothing at first glance, DroidDog points out that companies frequently like to hide information like this in press shots, so that date displayed on the phone’s screen might just turn out to be the date that the LG Intuition is launching.

Recently, we’ve been hearing word that the LG Optimus Vu has been rebranded as the Intuition in time for its launch at Verizon, and this image seems to confirm it. The Intuition looks exactly the same as the Optimus Vu, with that same 5-inch screen putting out a 4:3 aspect ratio. You can see the front-facing 1.3-megapixel camera in the leaked press shot, and the phablet will come with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich running and 32 GB of storage.

Of course, until LG makes an official announcement, we can’t be sure that September 15 is the date the Intuition is launching, so it may be best to remain on the skeptical side of things for the time being. However, LG has said previously that it hoped to launch the US version of the Optimus Vu before the end of its Q3, which wraps up at the end of September, so at least a September 15 release date for the freshly-rebranded Intuition doesn’t seem too absurd.

Sadly, we’ll have to wait for more details. September 15 is coming up pretty quickly though, so if that is indeed the launch date, don’t expect Verizon and LG to make us go much longer without pricing and release information. Keep it right here at SlashGear – we’ll have that information for you once LG and Verizon spill the beans.
