Apple Finally Fixed the iMessage Bug That Let Stolen iPhones Receive Messages Not Meant for Them

iMessage, which can be a fickle bitch sometimes, had an annoying, downright scary flaw that remained unfixed for too long: if your iPhone got stolen, the stolen phone would keep receiving messages sent via iMessage even after a remote wipe out and deactivation. That meant the thief who stole your phone, could see your messages. Apparently, it’s been fixed. Thank God. More »

Apple Just Can’t Keep iCloud In the Air

Today, iTunes Match went down. Yesterday, it was iMessage and FaceTime. Since launching iCloud to the public on October 12th, 2011, Apple just hasn’t been able to keep its cloud-based services airborne. More »

iMessage And FaceTime Outage

When you are so used to taking advantage of computing services that generally do not suffer from any downtime, it can be rather frustrating to experience services which you take for granted each day go through an omnishambolic moment. Case in point, Apple’s iMessage and FaceTime seem to have experienced a downtime today, resulting in a yet unknown number of iPhone, iPad, and Macbook owners in the dark should they wish to chat with their mates over either platform. Of course, this is not the end of the world as there are still so many other ways to communicate such as text messaging, calling one another’s phone number or using alternatives like Skype, but you know how loyal and protective of the brand name that Apple users can be sometimes.

Apple’s iCloud System Status webpage did claim that the iMessage and Facetime service, “will be restored ASAP”, with the message been posted since 1:30 PT thereabouts, so it remains unclear just for how long the downtime has affected Facetime and iMessage before that. Apple also failed to disclose the scale of the issue, other than hinting that it affected “some” users. I guess they do not like airing their dirty laundry in the public by being honest upfront, and yet are capable of trumpeting the exact number of iPads or iPhones sold in a few days. Strange, no?

Apple iMessage sees second outage in a week, iTunes UK follows suit (update: back up, in theory)

Apple iMessage sees second outage in a week, iTunes UK follows suit

Apple may have a lot of iMessage users, but it has also had its share of teething troubles as the chat service (and iCloud) grows. That’s certainly been true this month: Apple has confirmed that, for the second time in a week, iMessage is down for at least some users. There’s a real chance those conversations won’t go through unless it’s between iPhone users that can try SMS. More pressing for anyone in the UK is a wider iTunes outage, as we’ve heard multiple reports of the app and media repository being inaccessible in the country no matter what device they use. We’ve reached out to Apple and will update if there’s an explanation or a repair schedule for either outage. For now, we’d suggest that iMessage lovers communicate through social networks and passive-aggressive word choices in Letterpress.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

Update: And no sooner than we post than Apple has iMessage back up and running. Let us know through tips if you’re still having iMessage or iTunes UK trouble, however.

Apple releases OS X 10.8.2 update for Mountain Lion: Facebook integration, iMessage fixes and more

Apple releases OS X 1082 update for Mountain Lion Facebook integration, iMessage fixes and more

Looks like one major software update wasn’t enough, as Apple is following its push of iOS 6 with OS X 10.8.2. Weighing in at 697.54MB, it’s a pretty substantial update for Mountain Lion users, with that long-awaited Facebook integration chief among the changes. As Twitter presently operates within the OS, Facebook will now too enjoy single sign-on simplicity, and all of OS X’s sharing portals will now include Facebook as an option. You’ll get Facebook notifications in Notification Center, and you can share Game Center scores with your Facebook pals. It’s also being reported that this build restores laptop battery life levels to those seen with Lion.

Other new features include the addition of Power Nap for the Late 2010 MacBook Air, a few iMessage tweaks (iMessages sent to your phone number will now appear on your Mac), a new shared Reminders list and the ability to receive FaceTime calls initially sent to your phone number. Passbook users will also enjoy the newfangled ability to add passes right from Safari and Mail, and Dictation now understands Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Korean, Canadian English (!), Canadian French and Italian. We’re installing the update now, and you can peek the full changelog after the break. Feel free to toss your post-install impressions in comments as well.

Apple iMessage outage happened earlier this morning

Apple’s instant messaging service, iMessage, was said to have experienced outage issues worldwide instead of it being a local occurrence, and it certainly contradicts the “All Clear” condition on its iCloud status website. The service outage is not a long and sustained one, but rather, one that happens sporadically. (more…)

Is Your iMessage Messed Up Right Now? [Chatroom]

There have been reports that iMessage isn’t so functional right now. Our limited experiments seem to support this theory. And if you’ll remember the last time this happened, the improved centralized syncing between iOS devices popped up shortly after. What about you iPhone owners out there? Apple releases Mountain Lion 10.8.2 build to devs, focuses on Facebook, iMessage and more

Apple releases Mountain Lion 1082 build to devs, focuses on Facebook, iMessage and more

Shortly after letting the 10.8.1 Mountain Lion out of the bag, Cupertino’s now released the next dotted version of its feline OS X to members of the developer community. According to the seed note, this early release will be focusing on a slew of social areas as well as other handy applications, including Facebook, Messages, Game Center, Reminders and, of course, the company’s own web browser, Safari. As is usually the case with these young builds, Apple suggests you install it on a machine “you are prepared to erase if necessary,” though something tells us you were already well aware of that. But in case you do want to install v10.8.2, you’ll find the rest of the deets at the Apple Developer site linked below.

Apple posts OS X 10.8.1 update, mends your Mountain Lion

Apple posts OS X 108, mends your Mountain Lion

There’s a special moment in every operating system’s life when it loses its innocent .0 status and grows up. It’s OS X Mountain Lion’s turn to mature, as Apple has just pushed out the 10.8.1 update for early adopters. Most of the fixes are for issues that plague specific use cases, such as audio output from a Thunderbolt Display or crashes in Migration Assistant. There are a few remedies that a wider audience might appreciate — a fix for iMessages that don’t send and an improvement to Exchange compatibility in Mail, for example. We don’t yet know of any surprises lurking underneath, but it can’t hurt to have a smoother-running Mac while we investigate.
