Instagram Adds Nexus 7, Flickr Support

instagram

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: taking pics with a tablet is offensive to the human race. That said, viewing pics on a tablet is a very natural experience and Instagram’s latest build adds support for the N7.

This comes a few weeks after it was discovered that Instagram didn’t run on the new tablet. Owners trying to run Instagram were greeted with an incompatibility message. But now, with the latest version of Instagram, owners can view and share pics along with taking mugshots with the 1.2MP front facing camera.

Version 1.2 also adds Flickr support, allowing users to upload Instagram pics to the photo sharing site. As AndroidCentral reminds, Google + support is still missing.

But remember, kids, use this app for picture viewing purposes only. Taking pics with a tablet is dumb.

Photos of toys using iPads and iPhones are pretty cute

Snapping a photo of someone or yourself using a gadget is not new, in fact you might see such a photo and dismiss it because of how “normal” it is. However Instagram user @santlov has created a series of photos where he photographs toys using “gadgets”. Pictured above is none other than Toy Story’s Woody taking a presumably Instagram photo of his sushi with his iPhone. We have to admit that this is pretty cute and pretty clever and Santlov has tons of other photos of toys interacting with technology, i.e. DSLR cameras, iPads, MacBooks, etc. So if you’ve ever wondered what toys might look like playing with gadgets, pop on over to Santlov’s Instagram page for the rest of the photos! Pretty cute, huh?

Believe It or Not, the First Photograph Uploaded to Instagram Was of Neither Food nor Sunset [Instagram]

It may surprise you to learn that back in July 2010, three months before the official public launch of the $1 billion photo-sharing app we’re all come to know so well, the project then known simply as Codename uploaded it’s first test photo photo—a happy-looking blonde dog and a *woman’s right foot in Teva sandal. Instagram update makes use of Nexus 7 front-facing camera

This week the folks at Instagram have made it clear that they want to be on every Android device, even the Nexus 7 which does not have a standard camera on its back. This device is the reason Instagram has been updated to make use of front-facing cameras in its latest update, choosing the one camera this device has by default rather than saying it’s not compatible with a device with no back-facing shooter. This application has also been updated to be able to share directly to Flickr in its newest bump.

This update represents a great ushering-in of Google’s efforts in the tablet space, with plenty of tablet devices having only front-facing cameras up until now but Instagram only updating now that Google’s own hero tablet wants in. Instagram is one of the most popular Android applications on Google Play right this minute, and has been every since the developers behind the software were so kind as to port it over from iOS.

Check out our review of the Google Nexus 7 as well as our review of Instagram for Android!

Instagram is owned by Facebook in its entirety, which makes us think that regardless of Facebooks big collaboration with Apple for iOS 6, Facebook must still realize the big G’s worth with Android. You can download Instagram from the Google Play app store for free.

Instagram for Android gets updated with Nexus 7 support and Flickr sharing

Toys Playing with Toy-Size Apple Gadgets Will Make You Either Sneer or Coo [Apple]

Toys playing with their own overly-engineered, brand-name, Apple gadgets is what could probably be called—quite accurately—the pinnacle of pretension. Still, anything made miniature is automatically cool. And these tiny iPods, iPads, iPhones, and MacBooks are no exception. Not even when Woody from Toy Story is posed with a doll-size iPhone to look like he’s Instagramming his sushi dinner.

Yes, There Is Actually a Song Called "Instagram Ya Body" [Soundtrack]

Netflix, Instagram, Pinterest suffer storm-related outages

As evidence of the fact that high-end technological platforms are still vulnerable to the same trials and tribulations as everyone else, a series of severe storms rattled service at a few of the biggest online services this weekend. Netflix, Instagram, and Pinterest were among the most notable companies to suffer outages as a result of the weather.

All three of those companies, and hundreds more, rely on Web fidelity and storage from Amazon. It’s one of the less publicized offerings from the online retail giant, but that doesn’t make it less important. It helps to power some of the top websites on the Internet. The retailer confirmed to the Associated Press that there was damage to its operations as a result of the severe storms on Saturday.

By late afternoon, though, the problems were fixed and service was restored to affected clients and customers. It does help to remind users not to take their online services for granted. It also is a reminder that as everyone transitions from local storage to the cloud, that it is always a good idea to keep hard-copy back-ups of everything, because you never know what might take down the cloud.
