Automatic Toilet Paper Dispenser Perfect for Germophobes

Sometimes it’s mind-boggling how companies are able to come up with solutions to problems that seem pretty trivial at first glance. A perfect example is the Camitool, an automatic toilet paper dispenser which was probably developed in response to all the complaints that germophobes unleashed against having to use toilet paper that (ick) others have already touched.

Auto Toilet PaperWe’ve already got automatic faucets, automatic soap dispensers, and automatic hand dryers in public restrooms. So why not automate one more thing so that people will virtually not have to lay their hands on anything at all?

On a serious note, it actually does help people with rheumatism grab toilet paper without the pain or the hassle. And the less hands that touch it, the cleaner.

Users can program just how many inches of toilet paper to dispense before having Camitool automatically cut it. Several Japanese hospitals already have the Camitool installed, but it might take a while before we see this hit public restrooms on a massive scale, no thanks to its 60,000 yen (~$765 USD) price tag.

Podtime Sleeping Pod Blocks out the Outside World While You Nap

I like taking naps in private, but even I think that these Podtime Sleeping Pods are borderline ridiculous. While it seems like a pretty neat concept, it’s priced way too high (at £1,375 or about $2,148 USD) for mass enjoyment.

But if you’ve got money to burn and enjoy catching some Zzz’s in complete solitude, then you’ll love these sleeping pods. Each tube itself is fashioned from strong, poly-carbonate material. It’s got enough room inside to fit just one person and comes with a fitted mattress. Each one is illuminated with LED lights, and has storage and electricity as well in the event you’d like to charge up your gadgets while you nap. They can also be stacked two high if you’d like and upstairs or downstairs neighbor.

If you’re interested in catching a nap in one of these tubes, you can get the Podtime online from Firebox.

Belt Buckle Flask Lets You Take Your Booze to Go

People have been known to wear strange things around their waist. It all began with the computer mouse belt, which featured an actual mouse as the buckle. Then there was Volt Buckle gadget charger, which had a plug integrated right into the buckle.

And then there’s the Belt Buckle Flask, which is silly but useful at the same time.

Belt Buckle Booze Flask
When people see flasks, they automatically think of booze. But that doesn’t really have to be the case, which extends the appeal of the Belt Buckle Flask to people who don’t really consume alcoholic beverages. Fill it with water, soda (although expect it go flat after about half an hour), juice, or even milk–basically whatever you want to drink randomly throughout the day.

These Belt Buckle Flasks are available online for just $7.40(USD) each over on Amazon. And no, that doesn’t include the belt.

Got Lazy Fingers? Now You Can Play Pong With Your Eyes

I once bruised my thumbs after a night-long marathon playing Tekken 3 with my college buddies. It was torture to go back to school the next day and hurdle through a pop quiz that served up mostly essay-type questions.

Bruised fingers are probably nothing new to you if you’re a true blue gamer. But if you’re itching to play something – anything! – while your digits are out of commission, then how about a game of Pong which you can play with your eyes? Sounds unreal, but it’s not.

pong glasses
Dr. Aldo Faisal and his team from the Department of Computing at UK’s Imperial College took some glasses, tweaked them and rigged them with circuitry to track eye movements in 3D. And voila: wearers can now play Pong simply by donning the glasses, and looking where they want the paddle to move.

The glasses weren’t made specifically for playing retro arcade games, though, as the researchers came up with them to help people with mobility or motor control issues like MS or Parkinson’s to issue commands with their eyes. And as the video shows, it’s definitely promising.

Virtual Fridge Lock Tells Social Networks If You’re Cheating on Your Diet

Diets are tough. They’re especially hard if you’ve got a sweet tooth and a penchant for ice cream. But if you’re the type who gets on better with a support group, then you’ll definitely need the Virtual Fridge Lock.

Fridge lockIt’s basically a magnet that’s being distributed by Meta Real, a diet reeducation program. Just stick it onto your fridge, and it’ll automatically alert your social network and weight-loss buddies that someone’s about to break his or her diet.

It’s a clever idea coupled with good execution.

And if the Fridge Lock fails, make sure you’ve locked down your ice cream pints with the Ben & Jerry’s Pint Lock as a final effort to ward off temptation.

Breakfast’s super-speed reactive electromagnetic display is 44,000 dots of promotional awesome (video)

This superspeed reactive electromagnetic display is 44,000 dots of promotional awesome

TNT wanted to launch its new crime show Perception, in style, and we have to give it to ’em, this is pretty cool. Working with professional technological tinkerers, Breakfast, they created a 23 x 12 foot display made up of 44,000 electromagnetic dots. Imagine those ticker boards you see at train stations, jazzed up with a little modern flavor. The dots are white on one side, black on the other, and move at 15 times the speed of their typical rail-station counterparts — giving a real-time effect. The installation is set up in Manhattan’s Herald Square until July 29th, and is fully interactive. When pedestrians walk past, the board updates to reflect their movement, and this “silhouette” interacts with words and images on the screen. Extra sensory stimulation also comes from the noise the board makes, literally letting you hear your movements. If a picture paints a thousand words, then 44,000 dots in a video paints even more. Head past the break to see the beast in action, plus more details on how it was done.

OnStar and RelayRides Team to Let Drivers Rent Their Cars to Complete Strangers

Would you loan your car to complete stranger? I wouldn’t loan my car to my own cousin, much less a random person off the street. However, if you’re the trusting sort driving a General Motors OnStar equipped vehicle, OnStar and RealyRides have teamed up to make it easy for you to rent your vehicle. RelayRides is a peer-to-peer car sharing market.

relayrides1

Drivers list their vehicle along with an hourly rate. The idea is that when the car owner doesn’t need the vehicle, they can rent it out to other people by the hour and make extra money. The interesting part of this tie up between OnStar and RelayRides is that the driver doesn’t have to meet the person renting the car to hand off keys, as OnStar can remotely lock and unlock the car.

Presumably, the renter would also be able to get OnStar to start the vehicle and turn it off remotely as well. The thing that bothers me about this is that I think it would be hard to get a renter to pay for any damage caused your vehicle or to prevent them from taking things out of your vehicle.

16 Gran Turismo 5 Gamers Vie for Chance to Race for Real

Sony Computer Entertainment America, Polyphony Digital, and Nissan North America have announced that the final 16 Contestants have been chosen to compete for the top honors in the 2012 GT Academy North America TV show. The 16 gamers have been whittled from nearly 400,000 applicants that competed head-to-head on the PS3 videogame Gran Turismo 5 to win the chance at driving for a real race team.

The top 16 racers will fly to Silverstone racing circuit in the UK for a week-long boot camp in August. That week-long camp will be televised on Spike TV’s GT Academy TV series later this year. The driver who wins the contest will have a chance to race for an official Nissan racing team. The winner of last year’s competition was Bryan Heitkotter.

So far, he has raced a prepared Nissan 370Z race car to a podium finish in the Dubai 24 hours race, to front row qualifying spots, and two top 10 finishes in the Continental Tire Challenge Series. Not bad for someone who got his racing start playing a video game.

NASA Unveils Mars Rover Landing for Xbox Kinect

If you’re a fan of space exploration and you own an Xbox 360, a cool new video game has landed just for you. NASA has announced a new video game that came from the NASA-Microsoft partnership intended to help raise awareness for the Curiosity Rover that will be landing on the surface of Mars soon. The game is free and is called Mars Rover Landing for Microsoft Xbox Kinect.

mars kinect

The game will only work if you have a Kinect because the motion controller is used for the video game controls. The idea is for users to use their body and gestures to guide the Curiosity Rover to a safe landing. The rover landing craft has limited fuel and the goal is to place Curiosity as close to the center of the landing zone as possible before the landing craft runs out of fuel.

The video game also ties in with the NASA 7 minutes of terror landing sequence that the Curiosity will go through as it enters the Martian atmosphere.

Deadpool Video Game Coming and it Needs a Swear Jar

If you’re a huge Marvel comic book fan, you may be more familiar with Deadpool than I am. I grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons, so I am familiar with all the superheroes that were on when I was growing up, but I never read comic books as a kid. The only familiarity I have with Deadpool was from Ryan Reynolds portrayal of the character in the movie X-Men Origins: Wolverine.

deadpool1

Now it turns out that Deadpool will be getting his very own standalone video game. The superhero had turned up in other video games the past as a playable character, but this will be his first dedicated game title. It appears to be a typical combat game with Deadpool using guns and swords. The character will be voiced by Nolan North, who also voiced Deadpool in “Hulk Vs” and “Spider-Man: Shattered Dreams”.

To go along with the announcement that the video game is coming, Activision, Marvel, and High Moon Studios released a trailer for the game at Comic-Con. The trailer shows the snarky humor that Deadpool is known for along with a lot of colorful language. Keep in mind again that the video above is NSFW thanks to language.
