Tea for Tweet: This Vending Machine Gives You Free Iced Tea for a Tweet

For the past few months, a lot of advertising and marketing campaigns have been targeting vending machines. There’s Coca-Cola’s vending machine that gave away free soda for a hug, and the Rugbeer vending machinethat needed to be tackled before it dispensed any beer. And then there’s the Bevmax 4-45, commonly known as ‘Bev’, that dispenses free ice tea in exchange for a tweet.

tea tweet
It’s as smart as vending machines get. It’s located at Wembley Square in Cape Town and encourages people to send out GPS-tagged tweets that include a specific hashtag so they can claim some free refreshments.

Once Bev notices the tweet, it’ll mechanically work to serve you up a can of tea for your enjoyment.

South African soda company BOS Ice Tea worked together with social media agency RAAK to come up with Bev. Pretty ingenious, isn’t it? And it’s great for generating publicity, too.

Seedbomb Vending Machine Makes the World Greener, One Seedbomb at a Time

The world is a better place if it’s greener. It looks better, too. So as part of a campaign by Greenaid, Seedbomb vending machines are being rolled out where anyone can become a green agent of change for the world.

SeedbombBut first, what’s a seedbomb? Well, it’s a mixture of clay and compost with native California grass and wildflower seeds that has been rolled up into a ball. So all the person needs to do is toss it onto a patch of earth and let nature take its course.

They’re cheap, too. The vending machine dispenses the seedbombs at just $0.50 each, so for less than a dollar, you can now be a part of the green revolution.

And if you’re looking to add some more greenery to your arsenal, don’t forget to pick up some flower grenades to go with.

Talking Urinal Cakes Tell Drunks to Get a Cab While You Pee

It happens even to the best people you know. They might have had too much to drink at a party that was unexpectedly wild, and now they’re too drunk to drive themselves home. The unfortunate thing to this is that sometimes, they’re not aware of that fact themselves.

Talking Urinal Cake

This is a situation that the folks over in Michigan know all too well, because they’ve devised these talking urinal cakes that tell drunk folks not to drink and drive – as they’re peeing.

Once some pee passes through it, it pipes up to say:

Hey there big guy! Having a few drinks? Then listen up! Think you’ve had one too many? Then it’s time to call a cab or a sober friend for a ride home. It sure is safer and a hell of a lot cheaper than a DWI. Make the smart choice tonight, don’t drink and drive. Remember, your future is in your hand.

Another one goes something like:

Here’s a real friendly reminder. Don’t drive drunk. If you do and you get arrested, the next urinal you pee in will be in jail, with a hairy guy named Bubba standing behind asking you to pick up the soap…

The Michigan State Police have made these available to 200 selected bars all across the state. It sounds funny and quirky, but I think it’s one smart idea to remind drunk drivers to stay off the road. At least, some of them, anyway.

Z World Zombie Theme Park Could Make Abandoned Detroit a Cool Place to Visit

I’m sure most of us have watched zombie shows such as The Walking Dead and wondered if we would be able to survive a zombie apocalypse. An entrepreneur named Mark Siwak has a seriously awesome idea for a theme park that would let you find out how you would fare if zombies were to attack. The man has a plan to make a theme park using abandoned and derelict areas of Detroit called Z World.

zombie hoard

The idea is that people would come to the theme park in pay to enter a 200-acre apocalyptic style abandoned urban setting where you can run and hide from zombies to your heart’s content. The idea would be to see if you can take refuge in the abandoned buildings and survive the zombie horde. Sadly, you won’t be able to try out your Crovel at Z World.

Siwak believes that this theme park could employ hundreds or even thousands of people in the Detroit area to shuffle around in zombie makeup and work other areas of the park. However, some think the plan is nothing more than an attempt to capitalize on Detroit’s woes. Apparently, Detroit has lost approximately area 1.1 million citizens since 1950 leaving massive areas uninhabited and crumbling. That sounds like the perfect place for a zombie theme park to me. For now, we’ll have to settle for this.

Tetris Cushions Let You Play the Game on Your Couch

I remember playing a whole lot of Tetris back when the Nintendo Famicom (NES) was still the gaming console to have. It was even a game my parents loved playing, considering it’s a bit on the tame side and requires that players use their old noodle.

If you’re ready to embrace your past in gaming and show your love and appreciate for Tetris, then you’re in luck. Star Gallery has released a full line of Tetris cushions, and they haven’t left out a single shape, for the sake of completeness.

Tetris Cushion

You’ll find the entire family of Tetris shapes in the set: the block, the line, the partial T, the two S and L shapes in opposite directions. These hand-crafted pillows are sewn using super colorful materials, too, to add a lively touch to your sofa or room.

The complete set retails for $279.95(USD) on Etsy, and there’s only one available, so grab it before some other gamer beats you to it.

Credit Card Cutlery Puts a Fork in Your Wallet

You never know when you might need a fork, so during times of need, you’ll be very thankful to have this Credit Card Cutlery in your wallet. We can’t all be carrying utensils in our pockets, so these flat-pack forks definitely seem like a novel idea.

Credit Card CutleryThese were designed by Devon Briggs, who probably got tired of having to ask for forks where there were none (or worse, eating using only his bare hands.) So what’s a lad to do? Come up with a way to bring forks wherever, so they can be used whenever you need them.

They may not seem like a such a practical way to eat, but when you’re strapped for a fork, then you’ll realize just how much you need one of these credit card-sized babies. I’m not sure how easy it would be to make a spoon using the same approach though.

Why Don’t You Come Stay Under My Lampbrella, Ella, Ella?

Remember that oldies song Bus Stop by The Hollies? It basically tells the story of two strangers who meet at the bus stop, share an umbrella, and end up getting together because of their bus stop meetings. I couldn’t help but remember that song when I saw the Lampbrella.

LampbrellaNow I’m not saying this is a concept design to encourage people to meet potential partners in the streets, but it’s definitely a fun one considering the smart way it integrates a lamp with a sensor-activated umbrella.

Once rain drops begin to fall, the canopy automatically opens, providing shelter and relief from the rain to passers-by who might have left their own umbrellas at home.

BBC launches updated, interactive live video player ahead of Olympics; lines up ‘summer of 3D’

BBC launches updated, interactive live video player ahead of Olympics lines up 'summer of 3D'

As the London Olympics creep closer, BBC is unveiling more of the technology it plans to use to bring the Games home to UK viewers. In the last few days it’s shown off both the new live video player shown above, as well as a new Facebook app in beta for BBC Sport. The interactive live video player is built to deliver up to 24 HD streams during the Olympics, along with alerts for key events and extra information and stats. It will work on computers and tablets that support Flash, and for those notable ones that don’t, there’s a stripped down version for mobiles and iPads that loses the extra interactivity. The BBC Sport Facebook app will also be able to stream the Games, but also let you see if any of your friends are watching the same stream or what sport is the most popular. Finally, the Beeb has lined up what it’s calling the “Summer of 3D” with a lineup that includes Planet of the Dinosaur, Last Night of the Proms, Wimbledon and the Olympics. There’s a lot going on, hit the source links or check the press releases after the break for the highlights.

LifeLog Lets You Keep Track Of Your Life, So You Won’t Miss Anything

Life’s too short to spend it thinking about the stuff you did or didn’t do in the past (or last night), because regretting won’t change anything. What you can do, on the other hand, is learn from your mistakes so you can live a fuller life in the future.

One way to do that is by keeping a diary. But if that sounds tedious, then maybe LifeLog might just be the thing for you.

LifeLogIt’s basically an app that centralizes most apps you use on a daily basis, to keep a log of your life and help you do the things you need to do, when you need to: photos, videos, contacts, calendar,  entries, notes, and Facebook and Twitter integration.

LifeLog1

The app promises to help you keep “more complete memories” and provide “stronger memory tools” while you go about your daily life.

It sounds like a pretty interesting concept, not to mention useful. You can head on over to their Kickstarter page to find out more about the app or back the project. A minimum pledge of $5 will get you one-month of exclusive beta access to the iOS app.
