Go Green, Rambo-Style: Shoot Up Your Neighborhood with Some Flower Shells

These special shotgun shells take the green revolution to the next level. If planting stuff the traditional way is too boring for you, then you might want to shoot up gardens instead with Flower Shells as your ammo. You could also pack a couple of seed bombs that you can toss when you’re out of shells.

Flower Shellsmagnify

The Flower Shells were thought up by developer Per Cromwell of Studio Total. Unlike Flower Grenades, Flower Shells actually contain gunpowder so you can blast them as you would blast real bullets with your shotgun. Each shell contains a reduced amount of gunpowder and is filled with flower seeds. Shoot the shells into patches of dirt or grass with it and you’ll see daisies, sunflowers, and meadow flowers blossoming in those spots in a matter of weeks.

The Flower Shells are currently up for funding on Indiegogo, where a pledge of $50(USD) will get you a set of four shells. Shotgun sold separately.

FaceRig Turns You into a Digital Avatar in Real Time: Self-e

Here’s a program that could be one of the big hits of 2014. Currently in development by Holotech Studios, FaceRig lets anyone with a webcam project their head movements and facial expressions onto a virtual character, all in real time. It’s Dance Central for your face.

According to Holotech Studios, FaceRig is based on “real time image based tracking technology” made by Swedish company Visage Technologies. Aside from tracking and mapping your head and face, voice alteration will also be included in FaceRig. So you can become a voice actor, a motion capture actor and an animator all at once.

So what can you do with the FaceRig? For starters you can stream a show online using your avatar as your visage. You can be the next Hatsune Miku! Or rather, Half-sune Miku. You can make a simple animated film without spending a single second or cent in 3D modeling software. Or you can just make funny faces all day.

Holotech Studios plans to release several versions of FaceRig for different devices and use cases, such as a full featured desktop program for professional use and a mobile app for funny face use. For now a pledge of at least $5 (USD) on Indiegogo will be enough to score you both a beta and a full license to the basic version of FaceRig.

Artist Turns a Building into a Giant Rubik’s Cube

How good are you at solving Rubik’s cubes? I’m not ashamed to admit that I’m particularly bad at it. In fact, I have yet to successfully solve a 3×3 cube and I’ve been trying for five years and counting already.

If the usual handheld cubes are starting to bore you and you happen to be in Austria, then you might want to drop by the Ars Electronica center in Linz. The building’s facade is actually covered in 1,085 glass panes that are illuminated by 95,000 color-changing LED lights. It has been used by a number of artists as a medium for their work.

Building Rubiks Cubezoom in

The latest is Javier Lloret, who turned the building into a game. Specifically, he turned it into a giant Rubik’s cube, and he’s calling it the Puzzle Facade.

The interface-cube holds electronic components to keep track of rotation and orientation. This data is sent via Bluetooth to a computer that runs the Puzzle Facade designed software. This software changes the lights and color of the large-scale Ars Electronica’s media facade in correlation to the handheld interface-cube.

Puzzle Facade is made more challenging since the player can only see two sides at a time. However, it’s not really a huge factor since the player can flip and rotate and interface cube.

The Puzzle Facade is part of Lloret’s thesis for the Interface Culture master program at the University of Arts and Industrial Design Linz.

WiTrack Detects 3D Motion without Using Cameras or Controllers: Sight Unseen

As shown by the Kinect, today’s cameras are powerful and cheap enough to provide accurate motion tracking. The same feat can be achieved by making the subject carry a motion sensor or a tracking device of some sort. But a group at MIT CSAIL led by Dina Katabi have come up with a way to track motion and body parts in 3D using only radio signals.

witrack 3d motion tracking by Dina Katabi and MIT CSAIL 620x350magnify

Katabi et al call their technology WiTrack. The current prototype uses four antennas, one to transmit the signals and three to receive the signals that bounce back from subjects. The radio signals that WiTrack uses are apparently a hundred times weaker than Wi-Fi signals. Because it doesn’t require a camera to work, WiTrack can work through walls, assuming the wall lets the signal pass through. For instance, it can be used to interact with devices even if you’re not in the same room as them. Also, because the subject doesn’t need to carry any tracking device, it might be more suited to full motion gaming compared to the likes of the Wii, the PS Move and even newer tech like the PrioVR.

While WiTrack seems really practical, after watching that video I think we all quickly realized that it can be used to discreetly violate our privacy as well. Forget about tinfoil hats, we might need to make lead-lined houses.

Technomancer Digital Wizard Hoodie Has 32 Multicolored Tricks up Its Sleeve

ThinkGeek has turned another one of its April Fools jokes into an actual product. The Technomancer Digital Wizard Hoodie uses 32 multicolored LEDs and a speaker box to emit light and sound effects. The cool thing – or the dealbreaker, depending on how geeky you are – about the hoodie is that you have to activate the effects using hand gestures, as if you were casting a spell.

The hoodie has nine spells or sets of effects. There’s a fireball spell, a health restoring spell and even a water bending spell. The LEDs are attached to a hood assembly as well as to its inner sleeves. While most wizards use mana, this hoodie runs on six AA batteries, which you’ll insert into its built-in battery compartment. Skip to 1:25 in the video below to determine whether you have the moxie to don this robe.

You can get the hoodie for $120 (USD). Cast the browsing spell and head to ThinkGeek to order.

When You Play the Game of Thrones Video Game, You Win or You Die

I mentioned yesterday when I came across those the sweet Game of Thrones house sigil snowflakes that I had just started watching the series. I’m quite hooked now and I think it’s great news that a video game based on the epic HBO series is coming. The game is coming from Telltale Games, the company behind the episodic game The Walking Dead, and the Sam and Max adventures among others.

Telltale isn’t offering up much in the way of details, other than to say it is partnering with HBO on the game. That means the game will be official, and it better be good. Telltale had great success with the episodic game based on The Walking Dead, hopefully the Game of Thrones game is just as good.

If that video game isn’t enough to get you excited, Telltale has also announced an episodic game based in the Borderlands universe. The game is called Tales from the Borderlands. It will follow characters we know from Borderlands 2 and new characters.

Both games are landing sometime in 2014, and will be available on PC, Mac, mobile, and game consoles.

Game of Thrones House Sigil Snowflakes: Paper Cuts are Coming

I resisted watching any of Game of Thrones for a long time before getting bored a few weekends ago and firing up HBO on Demand. I am now hooked on the show and am dying to finish the first couple of seasons so I know everything that’s going on. If you are a fan of Game of Thrones with a steady hand and a sharp X-Acto, we have a papercraft project for you.

A group of patterns has turned up for paper snowflakes made in eight house sigils from the Game of Thrones universe. The patterns are offered at no cost via artist Krystal Higgins and they are very cool. Some of them are very complex looking, particularly the Lannister snowflake. The Baratheon flake also looks very challenging with its intricate stag horns. The Targaryen snowflake looks like it’s ready to breathe fire.

You can grab the patterns and instructions here. They’d all look great hanging on your wall.

AUUG Motion Synth Turns iDevices into Dedicated Musical Instruments

If you’re looking to make music with your iPhone or iPod Touch, check out this add-on, which looks pretty neat. The AUUG Motion Synth is a combination grip/case for your iDevice, which lets you use your hand and motion to play music.

It’s supposed to let you make your music more naturally than with a touchscreen by itself, adding tactile edges for each of its on-screen controls so you don’t have to look at the screen while playing, and allowing single-handed play.

When used with its companion app, it will transform your device into an eight-button synthesizer. The instrument is controlled via the app’s keys as well as the motion of your hand. You can change pitch and tone this way, and the buttons will play notes.

The AUUG app isn’t a synthesizer itself, but it can be used to control other iOS audio apps like Garage Band. You can also control external synth hardware as well. Here’s a look at AUUG being used to control Ableton Live, by sending MIDI data over Wi-Fi.

The device is being funded via Kickstarter. You can get one if you pledge at least $68(USD) by December 19th.

Sherlock Premier Tipped by Flowers in a Hearse

Fans of the BBC series Sherlock have been clamoring to see what happens in the new season of the show, since the last season ended with the tragic demise of Sherlock Holmes. Or did it? Now, the premiere date for the new season of the show was tipped in an interesting way.

sherlock hearse 1 620x412magnify

A hearse was hired to drive around with a flower arrangement in its glass windows. Those flowers spelled out “SHERLOCK” and the date “01-01-14.” Of course, the new season will air on January 1 (at least in the UK). It’s also telling that the season premiere is titled “An Empty Hearse.”

The hearse also had a hashtag on one window that read #sherlocklives. Actor mark Gatiss also tweeted to fans that they should look out for the vehicle. Gattis wrote, “Should you be around Baker St, Gower St or even Bart’s tomorrow morning, look out for a certain vehicle containing special news…#Sherlock.”

Fans looking forward to the next Sherlock episode here in the US will have to wait until January 19th, 2013 for its premiere on PBS.
