Facebook bests German watchdog in court tiff over real names

Facebook bests German watchdog in real name case

After a German privacy watchdog ordered Facebook to allow the use of fake usernames “immediately,” an appeals court has said nein. While the protection body in the tiny state of Schleswig-Holstein argued that Facebook’s ban on pseudonyms breached the nation’s privacy laws, an administrative court in the region ruled that those laws don’t apply to the company, since its European HQ is located in less-stringent Ireland. Facebook argued that requiring the use of real names protects its users, but the regulator said it’ll appeal the decision all the same — thus prolonging the social network’s long-running German headache.

Livescribe renames Sky smartpen after losing trademark dispute with BSkyB

Livescribe renames Sky smartpen to 'wifi smartpen' after trademark dispute with BSkyB

Livescribe v BSkyB was one of the stranger trademark battles we’ve seen recently, because the two companies operate in such different spheres — one makes smartpens, the other runs TV and internet services. Nevertheless, the English High Court has now ruled in favor of BSkyB, forcing Livescribe to recall all stock bearing the offending three-letter word and to re-baptize its “Sky wifi smartpen” simply as the “wifi smartpen”. Suddenly, the packaging left over from our review of the device just feels so naughty.

Rogers CEO to step down next year, search begins for a successor

Rogers CEO to step down next year, search begins for a successor

Rogers CEO Nadir Mohamed took over for company founder Ted Rogers in the Canadian communications company’s top post back in March of 2009, and today announced he will step down in January 2014. The news comes along with Rogers fourth quarter earnings announcement, where it noted 58,000 net subscriber additions for wireless and 7,000 for cable. Milestones achieved in the last year include the rollout of NextBox 2.0 features for cable TV viewers and LTE coverage it says reaches 60 percent of Canadians. Meanwhile Mohamed leaves able to note the company becoming Canada’s largest wireless carrier during his leadership. We don’t know yet who will step up in his place, but the press release mentioned Rogers family members Edward and Melinda — currently serving as a Deputy Chairman and Senior VP, respectively — will not submit their names for candidacy. We have submitted the names of Engadget mobile editors (and native Canadians) Myriam Joire and Sean Cooper for consideration, but have yet to hear back from the search committee.

comScore: Smartphones and tablets changing the digital landscape

ComScore has released is 2013 U.S Digital Future in Focus report, which looks at the digital landscape and how it is shifting, focusing on trends in online video, mobile, e-commerce, search, and social media. While the report has a lot of interesting things to say about how social activity, online video, and search are changing, one of the most interesting aspects are mobile devices, which are altering the way users interact with the digital world, creating a “multi-platform” landscape.

According to the report, smartphones led the way in 2012 mobile usage, having achieved 50-percent market penetration last year. Meanwhile, tablets also saw an increase in usage throughout 2012. Says comScore, this rapid increase in mobile device usage has fragmented the digital landscape, with the average everyday consumer now dividing his or her time between multiple devices.

Following in line with this is online video, which is growing as the average consumer expands beyond regular TV to include a variety of digital video content in their lives. As such, monetization of online video is picking up speed, with the research firm pointing out that YouTube made large updates to its advertising methods last year. Says the report, expect that online video advertisement will continue to ramp up throughout 2013.

Other areas of the report look at social media, which shows Facebook as dominating with 5 of every 6 minutes spent on social networks being specific to the company. Other social networks increased throughout 2012, however, including Twitter, Pinterest, and Tumblr. For search, Google was still top dog, with Bing coming in at #2. A shift was noticed, however, with last year showing the first ever signs of desktop-search usage decreasing as users gravitate to mobile devices and “vertical-specific” searches.

Vimeo absorbs iOS app maker Echograph, bets on the GIF-making craze

Vimeo absorbs iOS app maker Echograph, bets on the GIFmaking craze

It’s not often we hear about Vimeo making any type of acquisition, but today the company let it be known that it has picked up the team (and assets) behind Echograph, an iOS application that focuses on turning videos into animated GIFs. What’s more, Vimeo, as part of the move, is making Echograph a gratis download going forward, marking a notable shift from the previous charge of about three bucks for the app. According to Vimeo, Echograph creator Nick Alt will also go from CEO of Clear-Media, the app’s previous owner, to taking on the role of Vice President of Mobile at the video-focused firm, adding that his “proven track record of building innovative video apps made it a perfect fit for Vimeo.” No details were given on the deal’s financial terms, but we can only imagine a good amount of fancy GIFs were made in order to help celebrate the new property.

Europe Spends 3.5M Euros To Fight Network Latency

Europe Spends 3.5M Euros To Fight Network Latency

When it comes to networking, a lot of people focus on the bandwidth side of the issue, but latency is sometime a much bigger problem (especially on wireless networks). Network latency is that the that it takes an information packet to go from one computer to the next. For example, a typical web page which is hosted in your town can be accessed in 54ms. The same page from the same server can have a latency of 800ms if accessed from the other side of the globe. Latency can have different forms, and is not only a matter of distances every network has some level of latency, even your home network. (more…)

Mozilla releases Firefox with new Windows 8 UI into Nightly channel

Mozilla has been promising a version of Firefox designed for the new Windows 8 UI for a year now, and has trickled out a few details and previews since then. It’s made a considerably bigger step this week though by releasing the browser into its Nightly channel, which lets anyone who’s willing to venture beyond stable releases take it for a spin. As Mozilla’s Asa Dotzler puts it, “there’s plenty of work still to do, but it’s stable enough that we’re ready for more and more regular testing.” It seems folks are indeed having some problems with it in its current state, but you can try it out for yourself at the source link.

Kickstarter acknowledges that you shop from your phone with an iOS app of its own

With 40 billion App Store downloads and counting, if you haven’t already carved out your own little piece of mobile magic, it’s time to get crackin’. Kickstarter, the biggest name in crowdfunding, might be a bit late to the game, but its lack of presence in Apple’s mobile shop ends today, with Kickstarter for iPhone. As you might expect, the smartphone-native version of the popular site’s online store lets you browse through projects, watch pitch videos and submit a pledge just like you do on the web, but with a much less cumbersome interface. Project creators can also use it to track their own progress, or to post updates on the go. Kickstarter is compatible with iPhone 3GS and later, third-gen iPod touch devices and iPad, though it’s optimized for iPhone 5, so tablet users may want to stick with the website for now. The rest of you can hit up our source link to get started — the app just hit today.
