Facebook 5.4 for iOS Review: now with in-app video

With version 5.4 of Facebook’s hero app for iOS you’ve got three big updates including in-app video recording and sharing, voice messaging, and an improved Nearby tab. With these improvements we’re seeing a Facebook that continues to become a one-stop-shop for every bit of web-based communication you do with your friends. Pretty soon there will be no need for any apps outside of Facebook (that is if all of your acquaintances are connected to the ecosystem as well, of course).

With Voice Messaging here on iOS we’ve got bits and pieces of what we’ve seen in the past, most recently with Voice Messaging for Facebook on Android. With version 2.1 of Facebook for Android we saw an extremely rare happening, that being Google’s mobile OS getting a feature in-app before the iOS version does – but there it is, and that’s how it happened. Now we’re all able to join in the fun with voice recordings sent via the messenger section inside the app on iOS, this building on the excellence of free voice calling for iPhone users inside the USA (and Canada.)

Next there’s an improved bit of action inside your Places Nearby tab including a new list of places that’ll really ring your bell. What you’re getting now (as opposed to every earlier iteration of the app) is a list of nearby places of business as well as landmarks listed in order of relevance. This list’s entries are added in order of relevance according to your interests as well as suggestions from your friends – it’s ice cream for us!

Finally there’s the ability to both record and share video inside the Facebook app. All you’ve got to do is create a new status with the camera button (as you normally would), and here in version 5.4 you’ll be able to work with video as well as photo content. One of the odd things here is that you’re taken to a gallery of media you’ve already got on your device first, with the option to move to your camera from there. This allows you to record video through Facebook, keep it on your smartphone (your iPhone in this case,) and upload it at will.

This also frees you up to work with the media you’ve photographed or taken video of with other apps, suggesting only second that you use Facebook’s own basic camera interface. The quality of the photos and video you upload is based entirely on the device you shoot it with. We’ve seen no real significant difference between the built-in camera app from Apple and the Facebook interface as far as end-quality – use whatever you wish!

This update is available now in the App Store for free for all users – you can update the app you’ve already got or download the app new, whatever you like, right this minute. Have a peek at the timeline below as well for more Facebook news from the extremely recent past – it’s a non-stop torrent of social networking action!

Auxo app switcher for iOS 5.1 available now in Cydia

The popular new app switcher that we told you about a couple weeks ago is now available for iOS 5.1 devices and higher. Previously, it was only available for iOS 6 devices, but the developer has now released it for those who aren’t willing to upgrade to Apple’s latest operating system. The jailbreak is only available for iPhone at the moment.

auxo-580x3301

The app switcher costs $1.99 in the Cydia store, which is actually a small price to pay for a huge upgrade to iOS’s default app switcher. Auxo provides webOS-esque cards in the app tray instead of just icons, and with a quick swipe downward, you can easily close out apps in an instant — a much quicker way than Apple’s built-in method.

The tweak also comes with an enhanced music player that gives you basic controls and even the ability to view album artwork. If you swipe further to the left, there are also toggles for various settings, like WiFi and Airplane Mode, as well as a slider to adjust brightness, which is a perfect setting for those not keen on the automatic adjustment.

We should clarify that the Auxo app switcher is for iOS 5.1 and up, not iOS 5.0.x. The tweak won’t work on iOS versions older than iOS 5.1. However, this shouldn’t be a huge problem for most users, since a lot you are probably running at least iOS 5.1 anyway, but it’s important we point that out before you end up paying two dollars for a tweak that won’t work for you.

Apple TV updated to iOS 5.1, brings more AirPlay features and shared photo streams

If you’re a 2nd- or 3rd-gen owner of an Apple TV, you should be receiving an update for iOS 5.1. Apple rolled out a slew of new features for its media-streaming device, the most important of which include shared photo streams, iTunes account switching, and some added AirPlay functionality.

The shared photo streams feature allows you to view the photo streams that you create on your iOS devices on your Apple TV. You can update your photo collections and even invite friends and family to view your photos and comment on them. Also, public photo streams can be viewed through Apple’s iCloud site and now Apple TV devices.

Some of the new AirPlay features are impressive as well. You now have the ability to send audio from your Apple TV out to devices that support AirPlay, such as compatible speakers, AirPort Express devices, and other Apple TVs. You can now also password-protect AirPlay access with an on-screen code, so that no one else on your WiFi network has access to your content.

Another great feature they’ve added is iTunes account switching, which lets each member in your family have their own music or movies libraries on the Apple TV. The update brings the ability to swap between accounts quickly right on the Apple TV. Of course, you could just have one big library that combines all of your family’s content, but we know how stingy some family members can be.

The iOS 5.1 update also includes subtitle support, movie trailers, more advanced networking options, and general performance improvements and bugfixes. If you don’t yet have the update, you can grab it now by going to Settings > General > Update Software on your Apple TV.

Apple TV 5.1 Brings Custom Network Configurations, Could Allow For VPN Use

hero_appletv_2ndgen

Apple today released its iOS 5.1 update, which brought a number of new features to the table, including the ability to set up custom network configurations using Apple Configurator, the device management tool Apple offers through the Mac App Store for management of multiple iOS devices across an organization or household.

Apple doesn’t go into detail about what exactly you can do with the new network configuration options, saying simply that it allows users to install configuration profiles “to configure Wi-Fi and Ethernet corporate networks,” but it’s very possible that this could also open the door for users to employ virtual private network settings on an Apple TV, meaning that they could potentially get access to U.S. region-locked streaming services like Hulu Plus beyond American shores.

Of course, that’s bad, don’t do that. But if you were so inclined, you could give it a try and let us know what you think. I’m hearing that getting Configurator to properly prepare Apple TV units for device management isn’t working just yet, but this could be because an update from Apple for that piece of software is still required and will be fixed soon. After all, there is already a brand new Knowledge Base article on Apple’s website about the procedure for updating Apple TV network settings from within Configurator..

If you’re looking for other additions, the Apple TV update boasts quite a few, including support for the new Shared Photo Streams introduced in iOS 6 and AirPlay for audio from Apple TV to other sources, whereas before now it’s always been only the other way around.

Full details about what’s included below, as per Apple’s official update notes:
