iOS 6.1.3 screen lock bypass uncovered (video)

Remember how yesterday’s release of iOS 6.1.3 was supposed to fix a security hole that allowed one to bypass the lock screen? Well, turns out Apple’s got a bit more work to do. Today, a new lock screen sidestep was revealed by YouTube user VideosdeBarraquito, and this time around, running iOS 6.1.3 won’t do you any good. The bypass involves invoking a telephone call by voice command and then ejecting the SIM card at a specific event. After a few steps, access to a users contact list and photo gallery becomes easily accessible. The upside? If you’re genuinely concerned about your security, you can plug this hole yourself by disabling the voice dial option from the Password Lock screen within system settings. You can view the complete exploit after the break. As for Apple, looks like it’s back to the drawing board.

iOS 6.1.3 Released To Fix Passcode Security Vulnerability

iOS 6.1.3 Released To Fix Passcode Security Vulnerability

An exploit allowing anyone to easily bypass the passcode lock on an iOS device running iOS 6.1 was discovered last month, with Apple promising to fix it in an upcoming iOS release.  The iOS 6.1.3 beta introduced a fix for the passcode security exploit, and today, iOS 6.1.3 is out of beta and is now available for you passcode lock-using iOS owners who would rather not allow anyone access to your device.

iOS 6.1.3 only weighs in at 18.2MB, meaning you could get away with downloading it without needing a Wi-Fi network, although if you’re one of the over 14 million iOS users who have jailbroken their their device with evasi0n, you might want to rethink about updating to iOS 6.1.3 as a member of Evad3rs has said the update might break the jailbreak. We don’t know about you, but we would much rather keep our iOS devices jailbroken than running to an update that fixes a rather small security hole. We would rather get the all-clear sign from Evad3rs.

The iOS 6.1.3 update should now be available to all iOS devices. So if you don’t jailbreak your iOS device, then get cracking and start feeling more secure immediately!

Apple Plans To Fix iOS 6.1 Passcode Lock Bypass Exploit

Apple Plans To Fix iOS 6.1 Passcode Lock Bypass ExploitA flaw in the passcode lock in iOS 6.1 was revealed yesterday that allowed anyone to bypass it with very little effort in order to access the owner’s phone application to view voicemails, contact information and place calls. As a result, Apple has announced it is currently working on a fix that would help make its passcode lock feature function the way it should.

In a statement to CNET, Apple says the company ” takes user security very seriously.” They also say they “are aware of this issue, and will deliver a fix in a future software update.”

Apple didn’t give a timeline of when a fix to the passcode lock bypass in iOS 6.1 would be available.

iOS 6.1.1 was recently rushed to release in order to address issues iPhone 4S users were having with iOS 6.1. Those users complained of battery drain and 3G performance issues, but seeing how this is a major security concern, we’re hoping Apple releases the update much sooner to all iOS 6.1 users than they did with the release of iOS 6.1.1.

Apple Rushing Release Of iOS 6.1.1 To Address iPhone Battery Issues [Update]

It seems Vodafone’s recent advice to its users to not update their iPhones to iOS 6.1 caught the attention of Apple as it’s being reported the company is expediting a fix to correct the issues iOS users have been having with the latest version of the OS.

iOS 6.1.1 is expected to fix the battery issues iOS users have been experiencing as well as the poor 3G performance Vodafone mentioned in their statement. A report from iFun claims the update has completed testing among carriers, with Apple expected to released the 23MB update as an OTA update soon. (more…)

Vodafone Advises iPhone Users To Not Update To iOS 6.1

Vodafone Advises iPhone Users To Not Update To iOS 6.1Apple released iOS 6.1 on January 28 without seeing a gold master (GM) version to developers prior to its launch, which is very unlike Apple if you follow their iOS release schedule. Sure – iOS 6 was downloaded by an alleged record number of iOS users, but Apple’s haste may have worked against them this time as a major mobile carrier is advising its users against updating to iOS 6.1.

Vodafone, which is a U.K.-based mobile carrier, is warning its customers who have an iPhone 4S from upgrading their device to iOS 6.1 saying in a statement, “Some customers may occasionally experience difficulty in connecting to the network to make or receive calls or texts or to connect to the Internet. Apple is working on a solution to their software issue. These connection problems are intermittent.”

U.S.-based carriers have yet to speak out against iOS 6.1, but a number of users have taken to the Apple’s forumsin order to sound off on the latest OS’ battery drain problem that seem to affect all version of the iPhone, not just the iPhone 4S as Vodafone warned.

iOS 6.1 Downloaded By Over 21 Percent Of iOS Users In 3 Days

iOS 6.1 Downloaded By Over 21 Percent Of iOS Users In 3 Days

Apple released iOS 6.1 on Monday without any warning as they tend to release a Golden Master (GM) version of their upcoming iOS releases to developers before they make it available to the public. iOS 6.1 came with a few enhancements such as support for additional LTE carriers and being able to purchase movie tickets from Fandango while using Siri. And yet, a ton of iOS owners flocked to update their iOS devices with the latest OS.

According to a report published by Onswipe, which is a company that helps its clients create mobile websites, iOS 6.1 has already been downloaded by 21.8 percent of iOS users within 36 hours of the new operating system being released. Among those users, 24 percent were iPhone owners and 21 percent were iPad owners.

The 21.8 percent being reported by Onswipe doesn’t necessarily account for all of iOS users, just the ones that the company has been able to track. The only way we could know for sure just how many people updated their iOS devices to iOS 6.1 would be by way of Apple. Until we hear from them, all you need to know right now is a ton of people downloaded iOS 6.1, possibly breaking records for the quickest adoption rate.

iOS 6.1 Adoption On Track To Be Fastest Yet Says Onswipe, With 22% Of Users On Board In 36 Hours

ios6-users1

iOS 6.1 arrived just a couple of days ago, bringing little beyond support for new international LTE carriers and movie ticket purchasing via Siri in the U.S., but it’s already been installed on a significant percentage of active iPhones, iPads and iPod touches out there. Onswipe, creators of touch templates for web-based content, have seen adoption of iOS 6.1 rise quickly, from 11.35 percent within the first 24 hours, to 16.92 percent this morning, and up to an impressive 21.81 percent as of 3 PM ET today.

Onswipe is gathering data from over 13 million monthly active users on iOS, which itself represents considerable growth, a 3 million user climb from last month’s 10 million total active users. That means its numbers represent a pretty significant statistical pool to draw from to gather these results. Onswipe CEO Jason Baptiste explained in an interview that his company’s expanded reach is giving the company an even better idea of what’s happening with iOS adoption curves, and that this time around, people are upgrading faster than ever.

Consider that when Apple released its iOS 6 update, it took a week for 44.58 percent of users to get on board. iOS 6.1 is growing at a faster rate, and looks to be on track to top that should its momentum continue. Why? According to Baptiste, it’s likely due to the fact that Apple’s over-the-air update mechanism has been out in the wild for a while now (it’s been built-in to iOS since iOS 5 arrived in October, 2011), meaning users have had time to get comfortable with it and know more or less how the process works.

The fact that users are comfortable enough with the OTA update mechanism to upgrade almost immediately is great news for developers, both of native apps and of web-based mobile-friendly platforms like Onswipe’s since it means that they can create experiences that will be the same for a larger number of customers at once, without having to take into account different software versions with idiosyncratic quirks. Android, by comparison, has just 10 percent of users on Jelly Bean, which was released in July 2012, so it’s clear that Apple’s still way out ahead of the competition in terms of making sure developers don’t face a fragmentation issue.

An iOS 6.1 Jailbreak for iPhone 5 Is Definitely Probably Maybe Coming This Sunday

iPhone 5 users have been waiting a long, long time for a jailbreak. Sure, the current versions of iOS have been opened, but unlucky kids with A6 chips and the fancy new Apple devices they come in have been out of luck. But no longer! Probably. More »
