SlashGear Morning Wrap-up: September 24, 2012

We had a busy and exciting week last week with the release of the iPhone 5, and that continued right into the weekend and now today. While we hope everyone enjoyed their weekend (watching the NFL) it’s time to get back to those gadgets we all love and depend on. First up is the Samsung Galaxy S III getting updated to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, the international model that is.

Samsung just started the update rollout of Jelly Bean for their new flagship Galaxy S III, and we can expect carriers here in the US to start issuing the update here shortly too — but that could still be a few weeks away or more. That isn’t all from Samsung either. They then issued a Jelly Bean update timeline for multiple (15) of their devices, but oddly enough the original Galaxy Tab 10 wasn’t included. A device only a year old.

Then next up this week is already looking up with talk about Apple Maps, and iPhone 5 sales. Yup, talk is brewing that Apple is aggressively seeking out and looking to hire past Google Maps staff. Then Apple announced they sold 5 million iPhone 5 smartphones over the weekend. While that is a big number, analysts predicted much higher sales, and are blaming Apple’s lack of stock for the missed prediction. Then we have two more pieces of Apple news. One being that more than 100 million devices have been upgraded to iOS 6. Speaking of iOS 6, Google Maps has been hacked to work again on the latest OS.

Then to round off the wrap-up with some other important bits and pieces of news Intel detailed 4G LTE and quad-core plans for later this year, Nintendo’s Wii U will be region-locked, and then we have something weird for you all. You can get a brain controlled kitty tail by a company called Shippo. Yea, that’s weird!

Then to end on a good note the amazing Space-shuttle Endeavour made its final flight this weekend, flying high over California as people across the state enjoyed the site from their rooftops. You’ll be able to see it at the California Science Center starting October 13th on display.

Have a great week folks!

iOS 6 hack restores Google Maps

Canny developers have coaxed Google Maps into running on iOS 6 devices, bypassing the little-loved Apple Maps app, though the hack is said to be not yet ready for primetime. Apple replaced Google Maps on the iPhone 5 and other devices running iOS 6 with its own, homegrown Maps app, and promptly encountered criticism over the quality of the service’s location data. Now, iOS jailbreak developer Ryan Petrich has apparently managed to get the old Google Maps back on his iOS 6 phone.

According to Petrich, the hacked install is “still crashy and cannot be distributed to the public yet, but it mostly works.” It obviously requires a device that has been jailbreaked, since Apple is unlikely to allow a hacked app of this sort through into the App Store.

Google, too, is unlike to be too keen at that prospect, though there’s still the potential for the search giant to release its own iOS version as a standalone app. That would re-enable features like Street View, which Apple does not yet have alternatives to.

Still, even without Google Maps, iOS 6 users aren’t limited to Apple’s Maps. Third-party developers like Garmin and Telenav have stepped in with alternatives of their own, while online mapping tools such as Nokia Maps (available at m.maps.nokia.com) can also be used.

Apple: 100m iOS 6 upgrades already

The new iPhone 5 isn’t the only new Apple product in hot demand. iOS 6, released on Wednesday last week, has already been installed onto more than 100m iOS devices, Apple said today. The software news comes alongside 5m-strong sales of the iPhone 5 in the smartphone’s opening weekend, with a huge number of existing iOS device owners bringing their phones and tablets up to date.

The new software is compatible with the iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch, iPad 2, and new iPad, though the functionality is not quite the same on each. The iPhone 4S gets FaceTime over cellular, for instance, allowing users to make video calls over 3G connections; however, the iPhone 4 misses out on that new addition, and is still limited to WiFi video calls.

Meanwhile, iOS 6 also adds Siri to the new iPad, though not to the iPad 2. There’s a full changelog of new and modified features as part of iOS 6 here, and you can download it direct to your iOS device by hitting the “Software Update” option in the General page of Settings.

iOS 6′s most contentious feature, however, has been Maps, Apple’s homegrown alternative to Google Maps. This has been criticized for inaccuracies in mapping data, locations, and points-of-interest, though Apple has said that its refinement is a continuous process and the service will be refined invisibly to the end-user.

iPhone 5 sales hit 5 million in first weekend

So, how’s that new iPhone doing? Not too shabby — looks like Apple’s moved more than 5 million in three days, according to a press release the company just dropped. Cupertino is also reporting that iOS 6 has been installed on more than 100 million devices since the operating system was unleashed on the world. At present, the iPhone is available in the US, UK, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Australia, with 22 more countries being added to the list before the end of the week. By the end of the year, the number is expected to top 100. Check out the obligatory back-patting by Tim Cook and pals in the presser after the break.

Motorola pokes fun of Apple’s Maps in new ad

It wasn’t too long ago that we saw Samsung poke fun at Apple’s new iPhone and it looks like Motorola has decided to join in on the fun as well. The company has released an ad (pictured) above in which it poked fun at Apple’s new Maps app, referring to it as “iLost” while comparing it against its new phone, the Droid RAZR M which of course came with Google Maps on board. The ad basically points out if you were to use Google Maps and you were to key in specific coordinates, Google Maps will have no problems pinpointing the location, but it will be an entirely different story if the same was done with Apple’s Maps. If the reports are to be believed, Apple is currently hiring ex-Google Maps staff to help improve their Maps app but until then, we guess Apple will have to deal with the jokes and backlash that it is currently facing due to its Maps app being less than ideal, at least when compared to the competition.

Apple reportedly hiring ex-Google Maps staff to help improve their Maps app

While Apple’s new Maps app might have sounded like a pretty good idea when revealed, apparently it did not function as well in the real world and there have been many reports of its inaccuracy and rather weird renderings. Well it seems that Apple is hoping to fix that and according to reports, they have been rather aggressive in the hiring of ex-Google employees who have had work experience on Google Maps. This was revealed by a TechCrunch source who was a contractor who worked on Google Maps and this is what he had to say: (more…)

YouTube videos served on older non-iOS 6 versions

For the remaining 85% of you who have yet to upgrade to iOS 6 and yet have a strong affinity towards YouTube on your mobile device, fret not. A YouTube representative did mention that they will continue to serve YouTube videos to older devices, never mind the fact that the YouTube app no longer arrives with a pre-installed status in iOS 6. You are still able to go through the selection of videos from within the old app, which interestingly enough, will be ad-free for a more fluid browsing and viewing experience.

Folks who do not want to make the upgrade to iOS 6 need not download the new YouTube app unless that is their desire. Still, this comes across as expected for YouTube to continue offering support for the old app, where perhaps there is the possibility that such support was part of the original agreement between Apple and Google who obviously, when approached, neither would divulge details concerning the partnership. Would you still want to get the latest version of YouTube regardless?

A Bootlegged Google Maps App Is Coming Soon to iOS 6 (Updated) [Video]

Really it was only a matter of time, but this was still surprisingly fast. What you see above is the iOS 5.1 version of Google Maps running—albeit a little jankily—in iOS 6. The porting was done by one Ryan Petrich, who says the port is working pretty well, but isn’t quite ready for release to the public yet. Yet. More »

Apple Maps Problems Didn’t Stop iOS 6 From Having a Record-Breaking Adoption Rate [IOS 6]

Apple’s new, buggy maps have been getting a lot of negative attention recently, but talk is cheap. Even with all that whining, iOS 6 has proven to be the most quickly adopted version of the operating system, 122 percent faster than its predecessor iOS 5. Where it took iOS 5 five days to gain a 20 percent share of traffic, it took iOS 6 just over one day. More »

AmEx, Starbucks announce plans for Passbook integration: both live by end of the month

AmEx, Starbucks announce plans for iOS 6 Passbook integration both live by end of the month

When it launched with iOS 6 this Wednesday, Apple’s Passbook mobile-ticketing feature boasted a handful of high-profile partners — including Fandango, Live Nation, Lufthansa and Ticketmaster — but that list still leaves plenty of room for fleshing out. According to Venture Beat, AmEx is launching integration with Passbook later today. The credit card company’s Passbook functionality will include notifications for new account transactions, along with the ability to view your current balance and redeem membership rewards points. The service can also use smartphones’ location to verify charges flagged as suspicious.

Starbucks, which was featured in an early Passbook demo at WWDC, also announced the timeline for its integration with the service, tweeting today that an “update is coming at the end of the month” and offering no further details. Judging by Apple’s earlier previews, Passbook will let customers pay with a Starbucks card. The coffee chain’s Passbook functionality looks to be quite similar to its partnership with Square, which will be the go-to mobile payments option for non-iOS customers when it launches this fall.
