iOS 6 GM seed lands shortly after iPhone 5 announcement

One of the biggest upgrades found in the iPhone 5 is the jump to iOS 6, and though developers have been working with iOS 6 for a while now, today they’re getting their first look at the finished product. The iOS 6 Golden Master key has been unleashed, allowing developers to test out their apps and make any last minute changes before the consumer version of iOS 6 launches on September 19. iOS 6 is launching just a couple of days before the iPhone 5 arrives, which is scheduled for September 21.

That gives developers just under a week to test out their apps in the final version of iOS 6 before the newest version of Apple’s mobile operating system becomes available to everyone. Developers can download the iOS 6 GM seed for iPad, iPhones going back as far as the 3GS, and 4th generation iPod Touches. In addition, developers can also now download the Xcode 4.5 GM seed, so you’ve got everything you need to make sure your apps compatible with both iOS 6 and the iPhone 5′s new, bigger screen.

As we were told earlier today, iOS 6 will be compatible with the new iPad and iPad 2; iPhone 3GS, 4, and 4S; and 4th generation iPod Touch while coming pre-installed on both the iPhone 5 and new iPod Touch. Apple has opened the floodgates too, inviting developers to start submitting their apps for iOS 6 beginning today. While that’s pretty exciting, you should still probably take some time to test your app with the iOS 6 GM and the Xcode 4.5 GM seeds first, just to make sure your app doesn’t get rejected.

iOS 6 brings a number of enhancements with it, including Apple’s all new Maps app. There’s also Facebook integration to take advantage of, and Siri has been given a bit of an update in iOS 6 as well. With the final release of iOS 6 right around the corner, it’s certainly an exciting time to be an iDevice owner. The iPhone 5 is up for pre-order on September 14, and be sure to take a look at our Apple portal for all of the news from the day!

iTunes 10.7 available now with iOS 6 and new device support

Today Apple unleashed a slew of awesome products to the world and they are all running on their new and improved iOS 6. While they mentioned a brand new and awesomely overhauled iTunes 11 coming later in October, today they’ve pushed an incremental update out to support all their new goodies.

iTunes 10.7 is available right this moment to download. This will bring full support for iOS 6 (including the GM release seeding out now) as well as support all of Apple’s brand new devices. That includes the iPhone 5, the new iPod Touch, and the iPod Nano. Who’s excited?

Sadly we’ll have to wait for the “simplified” iTunes 11, but for those that want to make sure they are fully ready to rock for when these devices start making the rounds you can get iTunes 10.7 for Mac and PC right now. To get started with the download you’ll want to click here.

It doesn’t appear to have any changes, feature improvements, or anything else for that matter although the 165MB download is still rather large. The page still says “coming soon” but you can download it right this minute online. Oddly enough the new iTunes isn’t showing up on OSX update notifications like my MacBook Pro. Get the latest update now and stay tuned for more details on iTunes 11.

For everything else that happened today in the world of Apple take a peek at our Apple Portal.

iOS 6 GM seed now available for developers

iOS 6 seeded to developers ahead of official launch

Developers, start your engines: the GM (Golden Master) seed of iOS 6 is now available and ready for download on Apple’s Developer page. Essentially, the GM seed is the final version of the OS sent out to developers — as an opportunity to fully test their apps — before the rest of the general public, which will take place on September 19th. The Xcode 4.5 GM seed is now available as well. Head to the link below, log into your developer account, and venture over to the iOS Dev Center to find the download links.

Update: it looks like it’s fully working now. Hop to it!

iPhone 5 revealed without NFC or wireless charging – what happened?

This week we’re taking a look at the iPhone 5 as it was revealed by Apple in all its glory alongside iOS 6 and a set of hardware innovations like the Lightning connector – but what happened to NFC and wireless charging? We’d heard several times in tips and “leaks” that an NFC sensor was in the plans for this device for some time – but inside the last few weeks of this unofficial stream of shady bits, it was all but confirmed that, given the size of the device, NFC was not physically possible. Wireless charging, on a similar note, was never officially spoken about by Apple, and though Apple’s competitors – such as Nokia, for example – are working with the technology soon, Apple has simply opted out.

If you take a peek at the new Nokia lineup – including our hands-on with wireless charging – you’ll find that the new Lumia smartphones certainly are not thin. Not nearly as thin as the iPhone 5 is, anyway. There will certainly be a massive amount of 3rd party accessory manufacturers clamoring to create so-called wireless solutions soon, of course, as the iPhones before today have been working with for some time. The iPhone 5 on its own will be relying on the new Lightning port and cord – and we’ve yet to see how much faster or more efficiently that piece of equipment works.

NFC on the other hand is a technology that Apple does not appear to want to work with at all. They’ve not included it in any iPad device thus far, nor have any of the iPods in their collection – including those today – been working with an NFC sensor. Instead Apple appears content to work with businesses not through wireless payments as such, but with scannable coupons and cards with its own Passbook. Check our pre-event software rundown for more information on Passbook and prepare yourselves for more information on the software in its final form soon!

Also have a peek at the timeline of events from earlier today below to catch up entirely on the iPhone 5 and all its many details as it heads to the market for pre-order this Friday!

Apple launches incremental iTunes 10.7 update: supports new devices and iOS 6

While we won’t be seeing the heavily redesigned iTunes 11 until October, Apple has unveiled a new update ready for its roster of new devices, not to mention the incoming iOS 6. The refresh will work with the fresh-off-the-production-line iPod Nano and Shuffle hardware — but that’s the extent of what’s new in the 165MB download. You can grab it at the source below.

iPhone 5 full details official as device hits Apple Store online

It’s time to take a peek at the entirety of the iPhone 5‘s specifications, top to bottom, as the device hits the Apple Store online and we get our first full taste of Apple‘s new smartphone hero (be sure to have a look at our wrap-up of Apple’s big event). This device is the thinnest and lightest iPhone yet with a 4-inch Retina quality display up front and a new A6 chip under the hood. The iPhone 5 works with 4G LTE on a variety of networks both here in the USA and abroad and works with what Apple calls Ultrafast wireless or “LTE. The right way.” The iPhone 5 has a new set of earbuds called EarPods, a new dock connector called Lightning, and a boosted 8-megapixel “iSight” camera as well.

This device has an on/off sleep/wake button on top, a 3.5-mm stereo headphone jack at the bottom near two speaker grills and a Lightning connector. It’s got three microphones for HD recording, and two buttons on the left, one for turning the volume up and one for turning it down. Of course, the iPhone 5 also comes running iOS 6, which boasts a number of improvement and new features, including Apple’s new Maps app, Facebook and Passbook integration, and new Siri functionality (which includes support for additional languages). NOTE: Check out our full hands-on with the iPhone 5 soon in our Apple portal!

That A6 chip lends to “twice the CPU and graphics performance,” and that 8-megapixel iSight camera on the back comes with a sapphire crystal lens that not only provides “a crystal clear” image, but is also more durable than standard glass. The iPhone 5 takes advantage of Apple-developed single-radio LTE, and also has dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi support at its disposal. Even though the iPhone 5 comes with a brand new Lightning connector, users will be able to connect to legacy 30-pin devices through the use of a special adapter, so Apple has you covered there. On the front we also have a “FaceTime HD” 1.2-megapixel camera, capable of shooting in 720p.

So there you have it, the iPhone 5 is actually a thing and it’s already taken up residence on the Apple’s homepage. It’ll go up for pre-order later this week on September 14, and then Apple is set to begin its worldwide roll out of the new phone on September 21. Like iPhones in the past, this one comes in three different flavors: 16GB for $199, 32GB for $299, and 64GB for $399 (with a two-year agreement of course). Tell us – are you picking up the iPhone 5 next week?

iPhone 5 hands-on!

iPhone 5 handson!

At long last, the iPhone 5. We just got our hands on Apple’s latest smartphone following its unveiling in San Francisco, and suffice it to say, it’s a beautiful thing. Some might say we’ve been waiting for this moment since October 4th of last year, but another crowd may say that the real next-gen iPhone has been on the burner for much longer. Indeed, this is the first iPhone since June of 2010 to showcase an entirely new design, but it’s obvious that Apple’s not going to deviate far when it comes to aesthetics.

Apple followers will aptly recall Steve Jobs’ quote in July of 2010 — you know, that one about “no one” wanting a big phone, with current CEO Tim Cook seated just feet from Steve as the phrase was uttered. Now, however, Apple’s inching ever closer to that very realm, with an elongated 4-inch display that enables new apps to take advantage of more pixels (1,136 x 640), while legacy apps can still operate within a familiar space. The phone itself doesn’t feel too much different than the iPhone 4 and 4S; yes, it’s a bit taller, but by keeping the width the same, you’ll utilize a very familiar grasp to hold it.

In typical Apple fashion, even the finest details have been worked over tirelessly. The metal feels downright elegant to the touch, and the same line we’ve said time and time again applies here: there’s no doubting the premium fit and finish when you clutch one of these things. Yeah, the headphone port’s now on the bottom, but avid Galaxy Nexus iPod touch users shouldn’t have too much trouble adjusting.
