iOS 6.1.3 patches up Evasi0n jailbreak: hold your updates

Yesterday, Apple released iOS 6.1.3 unto the public, and it came with a couple of big updates as well as some general bugfixes and performance improvements. However, it also patched up some of the exploits used by the Evad3rs dev team in order to jailbreak iOS 6.1, which means that if you update to iOS 6.1.3, you’ll lose your jailbreak.

Of course, some iOS 6.1.3 users can still jailbreak thanks to Redsn0w, but it’s limited to devices running Apple’s older A4 chip and it’s a tethered jailbreak, meaning that you have to plug in your iDevice to your computer every time you reboot it, which can be a pain in the rear end most of the time.

However, if you’re currently on iOS 6.1.2 and are either jailbroken or have plans to jailbreak in the future, don’t update to iOS 6.1.3 — at least for now. Evasi0n team member David Wang (a.k.a. Planetbeing) says that he and the rest of the dev team don’t yet have a fix for the iOS 6.1.3 update, and they aren’t sure if there will ever be one.

ios-6.1.3-580x427

Of course, you may be thinking about that pesky lock screen vulnerability that’s present in iOS 6.1.2, and while I do care about security, there’s probably no reason to be worried about it. If someone got a hold of your iPhone, the chances of them knowing that elaborate scheme of swiping and tapping gestures to get past the lock screen are low. Of course, there’s always that chance, but you’d probably have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning if anything. Oh, and another lock screen vulnerability has been discovered in iOS 6.1.3, so you’re screwed either way.

Screen-Shot-2013-02-01-at-11.46.34-AM-580x4291

Plus, iOS 6.1.3 doesn’t consist of a lot of new features anyway. Besides the lock screen fix, there are improvements to Apple Maps specifically for Japan. When’s the last time you were in Japan? Have you even been to Japan? Probably not, so it’s safe to say that you don’t need the Japan maps improvements, or any of the other new things in iOS 6.1.3 for that matter. (Japan residents need not apply to this.)

In the end, it’s best to play it safe and stay away from new updates if you’re jailbroken or have plans to jailbreak. Heck, I’m still running iOS 5.1.1 and I’m chugging along just fine like the rest of the iOS crowd. We may eventually see an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3, but it could be awhile, and if history is any indication, it may be even more difficult to jailbreak iOS 7 than any other version in the past.

iOS 6.1.3 tethered jailbreak hits for older iOS devices

Apple officially released iOS 6.1.3 unto the public today, and we knew it would patch up the infamous Evasi0n jailbreak, meaning that if you update your iPhone 5 or other newer iOS device to iOS 6.1.3, you’ll lose your jailbreak and won’t be able to go back. However, another jailbreak method has been released, and it works on iOS 6.1.3 on older iOS devices.

cydia

The jailbreak comes to us from Redsn0w, and it only applies to iOS devices running an A4 processor. It’s also a tethered-only jailbreak, meaning that you’ll have connect your iOS device to your computer each time you want to boot up your device, which can be a pain sometimes. The jailbreak isn’t compatible with any iPad, including the first-generation iPad (although iOS 6 isn’t even available for this iPad anyway).

Of course, it’s still best to remain on iOS 6.1.2 that way you don’t lose your untethered jailbreak. Plus, there could be a few jailbreak tweaks that you use that may not be compatible with iOS 6.1.3, so it’s always best to wait in that case as well. However, if you accidentally updated to the latest version that rolled out today, there’s still hope with this Redsn0w jailbreak.

This specific jailbreak tweak only works on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the fourth-generation iPod Touch. You’ll need the Redsn0w software and the iOS 6.0 IPSW file for the jailbreak. From there, it’s just a matter of opening up Redsn0w and installing the various files necessary for the jailbreak. Again, this is a tethered jailbreak, so if you need to reboot, you’ll have to plug in your device to your computer and fire up Redsn0w to get it past the Apple boot-up logo.

Apple releases iOS 6.1.3 with lock screen fix, Evasi0n patch

We’ve known that the update would be coming eventually, and it looks like today’s the day. Apple has released iOS 6.1.3 to the masses, and it fixes that stubborn lock screen vulnerability, as well as comes with a ton of map improvements in Japan. The update has begun rolling out, and you should be seeing it soon on your iDevice.

ios-6.1.3

The lock screen exploit was originally discovered last month, and it allows anyone to bypass the lock screen with a bit of clever swiping and tapping maneuvers. From there, prying eyes can look at your contact list and even your photo library, both of which could contain sensitive information. However, this latest update patches it right up.

The update also patches up some of the exploits used by the Evasi0n iOS 6 jailbreak, so if you plan on jailbreaking your iOS 6 device, may this be a warning not to update to iOS 6.1.3. However, if you’re already jailbroken, then you probably don’t have a lot to worry about, other than the fact you won’t be able to update to the latest version.

Other than that, you have some other small bugfixes and improvements that come with the update, but the lock screen fix and the map improvements in Japan are the big two. However, the Evasi0n patch is also noteworthy for those interested in tapping into their iPhones and iPads, and the dev team behind the jailbreak doesn’t have any plans to support iOS 6.1.3 anytime soon, sadly.

iPhone 6 concept renderings beg for borderless displays

The photos of the iPhone 6 you’re about to see do not tread lightly with those of you who aren’t all about keeping their phone safely packed away from the concrete ground you tread on. It should also be made clear that the images you’re seeing are mixtures of reality and concept rendering, using a real finger to make you see the rest of the device as real – dust and reflections as well. Once you understand that, hear this: the iPhone 6 you see in less than a year may very well look exceedingly similar to these artist’s renditions.

iphone6-blanc-studio-01

Designer Martin Hajek was the illustrator of these images while NWE‘s Steve Hemmerstoffer helped with the concept design work. What you’ll find here is a collection of influences, starting with the iPod touch and the iPad mini. With both of these devices we’re seeing a bit of a return to round, and though the concept images here don’t show it, we wouldn’t be surprised if a design like this saw more than just black and white.

The biggest deal with this device is the fact that it’s got more of an “edge to edge” display than we’ve ever seen in the real world. Here with some form of what we understand to be next-to-impossible display casing technology, the iPhone 6 sits in a chassis with no border but the metal that holds the front display’s glass down above and below.

iphone6-noir-04

You’ll also notice the lack of a home button – a piece of hardware that’s been a staple in every iPhone and iPad to date. Here these forward-thinking minds have decided that, like the touchpad on your MacBook, you’ll be able to push down the bottom bit of the front of your iPhone 6 to get that same home button functionality. Intrepid iOS 6 users will know that a quick visit to Settings – General – Accessibility – AssistiveTouch will bring you the ability to skip the home button altogether on any iOS device you like. Perhaps it’s a pre-cursor to the absence of the button in the hardware as well?

The designers of this device have actually gone ahead and made another break in the way Apple releases mobile devices – or has over the past several years, anyway. They’ve created the iPhone 6, then for an added boost in space, they’ve created the iPhone Plus as well. Though the display sizes don’t much matter here in this completely unofficial concept stage, you may enjoy knowing that they’ve decidedly placed a 4-inch display (just like the iPhone 5) on the iPhone 6, and the iPhone Plus totes a 4.8-inch display.

iphone6-iphoneplus-noir-01

That means that the iPhone 6 could potentially be thinner and lighter than the iPhone 5 with the absence of a bezel on the right or the left. The larger model then is set to open up a whole new larger window for Apple with a display that’s large enough to take on the more beastly Android devices on the market – along with the absence of a bezel keeping the device small enough not to look absurd when used as a smartphone.

And it’ll all connect perfectly well with the iWatch – or the iCompanion, as it was suggested earlier today by your humble narrator. Have a peek at the timeline below to see more iPhone 6, iPhone 5S, iWatch, and everything in-between. We’re coming up on a rather strange and exciting season for Apple one way or another – stay tuned!

iOS 6 Jailbreak Evasi0n Installed On Over 14 Million Devices

iOS 6 Jailbreak Evasi0n Installed On Over 14 Million Devices

iOS 6 jailbreak evasi0n was made available last month and most likely broke records as close to seven million devices were jailbroken in just four days of the software becoming available to the public. Now that February is behind us, one of the members who created the evasi0n is speaking up on how many jailbreaks they achieved last month.

In its first month of availability, evasi0n has been installed on over 14 million iOS devices, that of course includes the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. (more…)

Evasi0n jailbreak now running on over 14m devices

Four days after the highly-anticipated iOS 6 jailbreak, 7 million iOS devices were running the hacked firmware. Now, exactly one month after the jailbreak’s release, over 14 million iOS devices are running Evasi0n, with 23 million iDevices running all versions of a jailbreak, both past and present.

cydia1

Pod2g, one of the dev team members of Evad3rs (the team responsible for the iOS 6 jailbreak), tweeted the statistics this morning. Jay Freeman (a.k.a. Saurik, the man behind the Cydia jailbreak store) clarified that the 23 million iOS devices jailbroken are only the devices seen on Cydia within the past month.

These are numbers are astronomical no doubt, but there’s always the chance that iOS jailbreakers may go back to the stock version of iOS, and compared to the number of iOS devices sold during just last quarter (a whopping 75 million), 14 million iOS devices jailbroken isn’t that huge of a percentage, considering that number consists of all iOS devices ever sold.

That 14 million figure may not go up much from here on out, mainly since an upcoming iOS update will patch the Evasi0n jailbreak. iOS 6.1.3 is currently in beta mode, and the Evad3rs dev team has confirmed that the new update patches up some of the exploits used to jailbreak the mobile platform, and the team members aren’t sure if they’ll be able to come up with a fix anytime soon.

iOS 6.1.3 Beta Addresses iPhone Passcode Security Exploit

iOS 6.1.3 Beta Addresses iPhone Passcode Security Exploit

An exploit was discovered last week which made it possible for anyone to access information on an iPhone running iOS 6.1 equipped with a passcode with very little effort. Days later , Apple announced it would be working on a fix for the exploit to be released as fast as possible. Today, we’re seeing Apple has kept its promise as iOS 6.1.3 beta 2 has just been sent out to developers to download.

iOS 6.1.2 was just released a few days ago to help fix issues some Microsoft Exchange users were experiencing as well as some reports of iOS 6.1 causing battery drain issues. Now that iOS 6.1.3 has been sent out to developers and beta testers, we could potentially see two new iOS updates in a single week, which we’re not sure if that’s a good thing or bad thing. Either way, expect iOS 6.1.3 to be available in the very near future, which we have a feeling someone somewhere will find a problem with it as well.

iOS 6.1.3 update to fix lock screen vulnerability

Apple released iOS 6.1.2 a couple of days ago that fixed the annoying Microsoft Exchange bug plaguing numerous iOS devices. However, it didn’t address the recent lock screen exploit that allows nosy eyes to get a peek at your contacts and photos. However, iOS 6.1.3 beta 2 was just seeded to developers, and it looks like this update will fix the vulnerability.

ios-lockscreen-580x327

This is the third minor update to iOS 6.1 alone in just a few weeks, so it seems Apple is getting better at addressing issues in a quicker and more efficient manner. This latest release was just seeded to developers, and it’s actually the same update as iOS 6.1.1 beta 1, but is being rebranded as iOS 6.1.3 with a few more fixes added on, including the lock screen bug.

The update also includes several enhancements to the Apple Maps application for Japan users that we saw earlier this month. There’s no word on when the official iOS 6.1.3 update will roll out to all users, but it should be fairly soon. There’s also no word on whether or not this new update patches up the evasi0n jailbreak, so stay tuned for that.

The lock screen exploit that iOS 6.1.3 will fix allowed people who got a hold of your phone to bypass the lock screen and gain access to your contact list, as well as any photos stored on your iDevice. While the hack itself takes a bit of practice to learn, anybody could easily learn the trick to get a hold of your contacts.

Evasi0n jailbreak updated for iOS 6.1.2. untethered

On February 4, the folks behind Evasi0n released the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1. Not long after, Apple rolled out the iOS 6.1.2 update to deal with some issues with the mobile operating system, and Evad3rs – the team responsible for the jailbreak – got to work. As of today, the evasi0n application has been updated to version 1.4, allowing users to jailbreak iOS 6.1.2 devices untethered

Screen-Shot-2013-02-19-at-23.09.22

You can use evasi0n to jailbreak any Apple device running 6.1.2, except Apple TV 3. Before doing so, you should prepare properly to make sure nothing goes awry. Check out our handy guide for a list of things you should know, and pay particular attention to the part about updating through iTunes, not OTA.

Grab the newest version of evasi0n from its website; it can be run on Windows XP or higher, OS X 10.5 or higher, and Linux x86/x86_64. Before getting started, remove the passcode on your device if you’re using one to avoid the issues it could cause with the jailbreaking process. The last big step is backing up your data, which is essential if you don’t want to lose anything.

Fire up Evasi0n and click “Jailbreak,” then leave everything alone to make sure you don’t accidentally mess something up. The entire process takes about five minutes, so lean back and listen to your favorite song or refill your beverage. By the time you return to your device, it’ll have likely rebooted and will display a jailbreak icon, which you’ll then need to tap on to finish the process and liberate your Apple device.
