Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition arrives on iPad

iPad owners had to wait a little longer than expected for Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition to arrive on their platform of choice, but the wait is over at last. The game, which takes the much-loved RPG from 1998 and enhances it for today’s gaming generation, went live on the App Store today. If you’ve never played Baldur’s Gate before, we have to suggest you check it out, but first a word of warning: you’re going to spend a significant amount of time on this game.

With this release, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is now on PC and iPad, two of the four platforms Beamdog has announced for the game. It was scheduled to launch on Mac OS X alongside the iPad version, but last we heard, the OS X version was still in Apple’s certification process. The game will also be coming to Android tablets (including the Nexus 7) at a later, yet-unannounced date.

Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is actually $10 cheaper on iPad than it is on PC, but that’s because two of the three added characters have become in-app purchases for the iPad release. Looking at the game’s App Store listing, those characters cost $2.99 each, so it seems like you’ll still come out paying less if you buy the iPad version and all of the in-app purchases. Cross-platform play is coming to the iPad version eventually, which means you’ll be able to play multiplayer games with those playing on PC, Mac, and Android.

For the moment, Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition is only compatible with iPads that have been updated to iOS 6. Trent Oster tweeted today that the team still needs to work on the iOS 5.1 version for the original iPad, but that the game will be updated when that’s finished. For everyone else with an iPad running iOS 6, you can snag Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition from the App Store right now for $9.99 [download link].

These Are the 10 Airlines Now Compatible With Apple’s Passbook

As one of the billboard features of Apple iOS 6, Passbook has proven way more useful than we initially anticipated. Amtrak, Fandango, and sports ticketing integration have already made it a welcome addition. But what’s really going to make this a killer feature in the future is having all of the world’s airlines on board. A few months after launch, Passbook is making some progress towards that ticketing utopia. More »

TomTom updates for iPhone 5 and iOS 6 (but loses Google Local Search)

TomTom has updated its iOS app to play nicely with iOS 6 and the iPhone 5, though the company has stripped ill-fated Google functionality out at the same time. The new version of the app, v1.12, works hand in hand with Apple’s own Maps app, showing up as a routing option in the iOS 6 software, but removes the Google Local Search feature as Google itself has discontinued it.

“Due to the discontinuation of the Google Local Search service, TomTom has decided to remove the feature” the company said of the update. “You can still search for locations using TomTom Places. Alternatively you can search Google in your browser and use the Copied Address feature to plan routes to these locations.”

TomTom Places is the company’s own driving-centric database of search results, bringing up POIs including gas stations, markets, restaurants, and more. It’s included in the app, along with live traffic updates and lifetime map updates.

The app is priced at $59.99 for the US and Canada version [iTunes link], while the UK and Ireland version is £39.99. TomTom recommends using iTunes to install the update, as there’s the possibility that you could lose your settings and saved locations otherwise.

Apple’s Eddy Cue reportedly fires Richard Williamson, who oversaw the iOS 6 Maps team

Apple's Eddy Cue reportedly fires Richard Williamson, who oversaw the team responsible for iOS 6 Maps

We aren’t apt to ever hear this in official fashion, but Bloomberg has it on good authority that Apple’s newly-promoted Eddy Cue has just fired the guy who was unfortunately leading the Maps team at the time of iOS 6’s release. If you’ll recall, Cue was placed in charge of both Siri and Maps during an executive shakeup back in October, and it seems that he’s clearing the runway in order to make things better in the months to come. The report also mentions that Cue is “seeking advice from outside mapping-technology experts and prodding digital maps provider TomTom to fix landmark and navigation data it shares with Apple.” It’s assumed that the goal here is to install a new leadership team within the Maps group, but it’s unclear if it’ll happen prior to Google’s own standalone iOS app becoming available. For those curious as to why such a drastic move had to be made, head over to Apple’s Cupertino campus and use iOS 6’s Maps app to search for “convenience store.” Evidently, the closest one is some 1.5 hours north in San Francisco. True story.

Google Voice Optimized for iOS 6 and iPhone 5

The Nook app from Barnes & Noble isn’t the only one getting an update today. Google is also updating its own Google Voice app to version 1.4.3. Users on iOS 6 who are dying to use Google Voice but just can’t due to the poor support will be happy to hear that the app is now optimized for iOS 6 and yes, the iPhone 5. Version 1.4.3 comes just two months after Apple officially launched iOS 6. The new version now requires iOS devices to run iOS 4.3 and above. It also brings a couple of performance enhancements as well as the much needed bug fixes. In case you haven’t downloaded Google Voice yet, you can get it here. (more…)

Google Voice updated for iPhone 5

The iPhone 5 and iOS 6 have received their official first update for Google Voice, the app Google produces to keep the whole world in with their own lovely collection of phone numbers. The Google Voice app for those that have been working with it for some time will not notice a whole lot different as far as functionality, but they will find their whole iPhone 5 4-inch display being utilized. This update comes with a collection of bug fixes as well.

The iPhone 5 version of Google Voice also works for legacy devices and remains the same for the iPad and iPad mini as well. You’ll find that the app works just as well or better than it ever has, especially considering its functionality hasn’t changed in several weeks and months. Google Voice allows users to work with their own phone number on many smartphones regardless of carrier or cellular plan and SIM.

This update does unfortunately begin to exclude older versions of the iOS operating system, cutting off at iOS 4.3. If you have a device that’s unable to update past that version, you’re out of luck! Everyone else can continue dialing away, easy as pie!

This update keeps the Google Voice app and environment strong on iOS where many of its competitors have failed. With Google Voice you’re able to access your Google Voice account from the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch all the same, sending free text messages to US phones and making international calls at reduced rates. You also continue to get transcriptions of voicemail free of charge.

Facebook gifts adds iTunes cards to the fold

It’s time to give your best buddy Chris Kringle the gift of iTunes music on Facebook – straight through the social network’s own gift-giving portal. This update brings Facebook Gifts up to a very real existence once again, reminding us that you’re able to not just give your friends a bunch of digital stickers, but real-world physical gifts like cookies and ice cream. What better way to tell your buddy you love them than with digital cash given through your favorite social network?

Some Facebook gifts are as odd as a pair of chopsticks while others are as fabulous as a jar of cookies – literally. Most of the items given away by people working with Facebook Gifts are simple and small – fitting in perfectly with the iTunes Gift Card way of giving. It’s the perfect “everyone wants one of these” gifts. And from Apple’s perspective, it’s the gift that keeps on giving.

When Apple sells an iTunes Gift Card to a user who owns an iPhone, they download a collection of music tracks and have extra cash left over – better spend just a little bit more to get that last app! If they sell an iTunes Gift Card to a person giving that card to someone who only has a desktop machine, they need iTunes to use it. They’ll also feel inclined to purchase an Apple device on which they can play the music or movie they purchase – this media doesn’t go anywhere else.

With Facebook being a newly more integral part of the iOS experience, it’s only fitting that Apple would continue to add its services and connections in with Facebook for all. Now we’ve got to decide if it feels too impersonal to get a gift card without actually getting the plastic. Such is the intricacy of holiday gift giving!

Apple airs two new iPhone 5 commercials

Today, Apple posted up two new iPhone 5 commercials on their YouTube account. One is titled “Orchestra” and the other is called “Turkey.” Obviously, we knew they would release a Thanksgiving-themed ad, so we’re not too surprised here. However, the two advertisements focus on smaller features of the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 — Photo Stream and the ambient noise sensor.

The Orchestra advertisement shows off the iPhone 5′s ability to reduce background noise during phone calls using the ambient noise sensor. This necessarily isn’t an iPhone 5 exclusive feature, since it was on previous models as well, but it’s a small important feature that Apple has overlooked in their ads, so it looks like they decided to focus on it this time around.

The Turkey advertisement shows off the Shared Photo Stream feature of iOS 6. It’s rather timely, since it’s also “picture-taking season”, so Apple decided to highlight some of iOS’s photo-sharing features that will certainly get used quite a bit over the holidays. You can select as many pictures as you want from your camera roll and share them with friends through Photo Stream, or even over Facebook.

We can probably look forward to many more television ads from Apple as the weeks progress. The holiday season is when they like to get their last say in before you go out and buy your gifts for your loved ones. Of course, this applies to all companies and manufacturers, so prepare for an influx of advertisements this year, folks. It’s going to be a busy one.
