Kickstarter for iPhone update brings fixes and improvements

Kickstarter for iPhone was released earlier in the month and it looks like an update has already arrived. This update will bring the Kickstarter app to version 1.1 and as one would expect with a point release, it is heavier on the fixes and improvements as compared to the new features. Thankfully though, that is not to say there is nothing new. On that note, lets begin with the new addition.

kickstarter-580x416

Kickstarter for iPhone v1.1 now has a new messages view. Basically, messages are now broken down into two categories — inbox and sent. Next up is an improvement in terms of push notifications. There isn’t a great deal of detail on this one however it was said that creators will now better control over push notifications. Basically it seems as if creators will now have a bit more control over how and/or what is sent to those funding their projects.

With something new and something improved, it is now time for the fixes, of which there are three listed. First up deals with the app banner, which should now open to “just the right spot” when you click Open from the website banner. Nothing major in that respect, but this next one should be a bit more exciting for those searching for that next project to back. The video experience has been fixed. The changelog notes that international users should see better performance when it comes to loading a video and that all issues with full-screen videos should be resolved.

Lastly, the Facebook logins and new user signup issues were taken care of. It seems some of the Facebook logins were simply failing and not processing correctly and that some users were seeing a “Name is required” error message even when they entered a name during the sign up process. Bottom line, a relatively minor, but still decent app update. The Kickstarter for iPhone app can be found in the iTunes App Store and while free to download and use, it may end up costing some money in form of backed projects.

Judge orders new Apple vs. Samsung trial to reevaluate $450.5 million in damage awards

Judge orders new Apple vs Samsung trial to reevaluate $4505 million in damage awards

Samsung has tentatively been on the hook for $1.05 billion in penalties after allegedly infringing on Apple’s patents, but that figure is about to change — for better or for worse. Judge Koh has ordered a reevaluation of $450.5 million of the damages in a second trial, arguing that the jury set one damage figure per product where there were six infringement claims that had to be taken into account for each device. She also believes that Apple may be entitled to damages for sales not included in the original case. There’s a chance Samsung can lower the amount it ultimately has to pay, but the extra factors and devices could easily worsen its situation. Koh hasn’t set a trial date, either, but we’d like it to come soon: Apple versus Samsung is quickly becoming the battle that never ends.

Angry Birds Developer Releasing The Croods Mobile Game On iOS, Android

Rovio, who you should know by now as being the developer behind Angry Birds, announced today they’ll be teaming up with DreamWorks Animation to deliver a new mobile game for iOS and Android devices for the company’s upcoming film, The Croods, on March 14.

In addition to the mobile game, an exclusive animated short clip will also be published on March 14, just a week before The Croods is released in movie theaters on March 22.

Details in regards to how The Croods’ mobile game will play are scarce at the moment, but the game’s page on Rovio’s site shares the following information:

“Meet the world’s first modern family: The Croods! These cavemen are breaking out of the Stone Age with the use of a new r-evolutionary tool: the IDEA! The Croods will Hunt & Gather their way through spectacular new landscapes as they tame fantastic and never-seen-before creatures. Help The Croods survive the wild…and each other!”

Hunting? Gathering? Ideas? As long as we’re not flinging cavemen at trees in order for their fruit to drop, then we’ll give the game a try.

Foursquare updates iOS app to version 5.5, improves Explore feature

During what appears to be today’s trend of updated iOS apps, Foursquare has just rolled out an update to its app for the iPhone, improving its Explore feature and taking it to version 5.5. With the updated feature, users can explore nearby places with less hassle, seeing more options on a single screen so they don’t have to toy around in search of the perfect location.

foursquare

All the best parts about the feature haven’t changed, however, so loyal users don’t have to worry about unfavorable changes. Location data, such as ratings, friend visits, specials, and tips are all still displayed. Tapping through a specific location will then provide additional data, such as instructions on how to get there and, in the case of restaurants, menu information.

In order to facilitate the additional locations displayed, the Explore feature has been redesigned, which will be obvious to anyone who has used the previous version of the app. The most-recommended locations will be displayed at the top, and new locations will be highlighted so you don’t miss them, and information about trends will also be provided.

All the other features are there as well, such as the ability to check in to locations and remember the ones you like. Personalized recommendations are provided as well, providing a more personal experience. Foursquare users can grab the updated app over at the App Store; it’s available for iOS 5.5 and later, and is compatible with the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

Foursquare on iOS gets streamlined Explore section

The folks at Foursqaure have just pushed out version 5.5 for their iOS app, and it packs a redesigned Explore section that crams more recommendations onto a device’s screen. While the new condensed place listings make better use of display real-estate, they still highlight ratings, friends who’ve visited, specials and tips. Though the fresh release is already up for grabs, Explore doesn’t seem to have undergone its metamorphosis quite yet. If you’re hankering for the concise interface, hit the second source link for the download.

Autodesk launches Socialcam 5.0 for iOS, offers HDR video

Autodesk has released its latest version of Socialcam for iOS, version 5.0. For those who don’t know, Socialcam – which is available for Android as well – is an app designed to make sharing videos with friends and various online social networks, such as Facebook and Twitter, relatively effortless. With this latest release, Apple device users get some pretty major new features, as well as a couple improvements.

socialcam

Socialcam 5.0 boasts a complete visual effects redesign, including a new icon for the app, meaning users will feel like they’re getting an entirely new experience with the latest version. Unlike the last version, 5.0 now offers 720p HD video recording, as well as a video HDR mode for creating well-exposed, color-saturated videos. Both video modes offer real-time mapping, as well as color correction, making it a handy option for creating videos that aren’t entirely bland.

Other features on Socialcam 5.0 include unlimited video recording length and storage, as well as the ability to set videos to private, and to have a private account. Title, soundtracks, and themes are all available, as well as “experimental” and vintage filters that let you give your videos an Instagram-like makeover. Videos are cloud-stored, and can be shared on social networks, YouTube, and sent to friends or yourself via SMS and email.

Autodesk’s Consumer Group Vice President Samir Hanna had this to say: “We’re particularly excited about this update to Socialcam, as it starts to deliver on our promise to expose aspects of our award-winning visual effects software to everyone through the Socialcam community. We believe there is a huge opportunity in the video sharing market and anticipate that we’ll all share videos the way we share photos today.”

Evernote updates iOS app, adds formatting options and improved PDF experience

Evernote has released a new update for its iOS app, taking it to version 5.2 and adding in a host of new and improved features. The improvements are particularly relevant to iPad users, offering improved functionality when viewing PDFs that Evernote boasts as providing a “much better” experience than the previous version. Likewise, the iPad version of the app has also gained a new Snippets feature.

1

Says Evernote, one of the things users like is having different note viewing options. Because of this, it has added a new Snippets feature to the iPad version of the app, allowing users to easily scan through their notes, flipping between months quickly and reducing the amount of time spent hunting for that list you wrote last July, for example. The Snippets view can be accessed by swiping down the upper part of the Notes list and tapping its icon.

Another big improvement is in PDF viewing, which is more refined than it has ever been. Version 5.2 contains an all new PDF viewer that offers a multi-page view along the bottom of the viewer, allowing readers to jump to any page in the document easily. Users can search within a PDF, with premium subscribers having the ability to search within a scanned document as well. There’s landscape view when turning the mobile device sideways, and rotation lock to keep it from shifting around when you change position.

Perhaps the best improvement, however, is the new formatting options, which includes two ways to remove formatting that is not wanted. This is nestled under the “A” option for iPhone users, and under “no-formatting” for iPad users. The options include Simplify Formatting for cleaning up formatting problems, while Plain Text is self-explanatory, removing all formatting and generating a plain text document.

Conan O’Brien Tells Us What Everyone Uses Their iPads For

On one side of the spectrum, you have people who are using their iPads to better themselves by downloading applications that will help them learn a thing or two. On the other side of the spectrum, you have people who use their iPads for one specific thing, which Conan decides to highlight in a new spoof commercial.

Apple’s recent iPad commercials highlighting experiences only available on the iOS platform hasn’t been one of their best, but Conan thinks they’re not being honest with the public as he knows what we all use our iPads for.

If you have yet to watch the video and still don’t want the surprise to be ruined, let’s just say Conan believes the reason why people use their iPads is to take care of some urges they have that would normally be done in front of a computer. No, it isn’t playing video games or watching an unhealthy amount of cat videos, although those would probably be as embarrassing depending on the kind of people living with you.

YouTube For iOS Gets Send To TV Feature With Xbox 360, PS3, Smart TV Support

YouTube For iOS Gets Send To TV Feature With Xbox 360, PS3, Smart TV Support

Google introduced its Send to TV function with its YouTube Android application this past November, although it was only possible to perform the feature on Google TV set-top-boxes. Over the following weeks, native YouTube applications on game consoles and Smart TVs supported the feature, and today, iOS users can finally get in on the action as the official YouTube application has received the Send to TV” function.

The Send to TV function currently supports the Xbox 360, PS3 and Smart TVs that have a YouTube application available to it. If you’re asking where’s the support for the Wii U, we don’t think that’ll happen any time soon considering how the Wii U’s gamepad can interact with the console in a similar way. (more…)
