Corsair outs Voyager Air with WiFi storage, NAS, USB 3.0 and repeater all in one

Corsair launches Voyager Air with wireless storage, NAS, USB 30 and WiFi repeater in one

Corsair is very much associated with devices that need a physical connection to work, whether they’re thumb drives or memory sticks. It’s looking to cut the cord in style through its new Voyager Air. You’ll have seen some of what it does with a predecessor like Kingston’s Wi-Drive, with media streaming to Android and iOS devices, a WiFi repeater mode and USB 3.0 support, but Corsair’s drive goes the extra mile by serving as network attached storage through a gigabit Ethernet link. The 7-hour battery life when completely wireless certainly helps its prospects, at least among its immediate rivals. Corsair plans to ship the Voyager Air by early February in a 500GB version for $199 and 1TB for $229 versions; either price sounds reasonable for a home media server that ultimately doesn’t have to stay at home.

Slingboxes get My Media syncing to USB, Companion iPad app for at-home viewing

Slingboxes get My Media syncing for USB storage, Companion second screen app for iPad

The Slingbox news hasn’t stopped just because Dish made its big splash. An update to the Slingbox 500 at first, and the 350 later this year, adds a local My Media sync component that lets Android or iOS users offload photos or videos to a USB drive attached to the Slingbox — they just have to stream their content instead of chewing up their mobile device storage. Both Slingbox 350 and 500 owners are also promised the new Slingbox Companion app you see above. As long as they’re toting at least an iPad 2, they can find shows, share their tastes through social networks and use their tablet as a remote without the usual live video of the SlingPlayer app. My Media is arriving first, both as a firmware update and a new SlingPlayer release, in the weeks ahead. Would-be Companion users will need to wait until the app hits iPads in the spring.

Extreme Reality’s Extreme Motion uses 2D webcams for 3D motion games (hands-on)

Extreme Reality Extreme Motion hands-on

Extreme Reality‘s technology revolves around gestures, and its latest effort is to bring that movement to the masses: its Extreme Motion developer kit turns just about any off-the-shelf webcam or built-in camera on common platforms, including Android, iOS and Windows, into an almost Kinect-like system capable of tracking 3D motion. Despite missing depth cameras or other additional sensors, it’s theoretically quite accurate — the software tracks joints across the body in every frame, although it’s not quite so sensitive as to track fingers.

This author had the chance to make a fool of himself in front of a laptop’s camera to see how well Extreme Motion works. In short, reasonably well: while it wasn’t in perfect sync, it recognized with less-than-elegant moves in a Dance Central-style demo title and flagged whether a shimmy was right on target or evidence of two left feet. Of course, this experiment was conducted in a brightly-lit hotel ballroom, where body detection is ideal, so take the experiment with a grain of salt. It’s still adept enough that the developers who will have access to the (currently free) toolkit can produce motion games we’d be sincerely interested in playing.

Kanex launches $99 meDrive, a private cloud for your iOS device

Kanex launches $99 meDrive, a private cloud for your iOS device

Kanex might be typecast as a mere maker of display cables, but that doesn’t mean it’s not capable of belting out the odd line of Shakespeare. Its latest “challenging” role is the meDrive, a device that creates a private cloud to bounce files between your iOS and desktop devices. With its WebDAV support, it’ll let you bounce iWork documents on your private network, and, if you open up port 80, will also let you access it on the go. Simply plug the box into your router, and Bonjour’s auto-discovery support will handle the rest from the free app. You can also hot-swap USB storage of any size into the dedicated port, or even add in a hub for even more space. Put money in thy purse tonight, as it’ll cost you $99 when it goes on sale right… now.

TireHawk TPMS Kit Lets You Monitor Your Tires from Your Smartphone

While many newer vehicles have built-in tire pressure monitoring systems which alert you when you have a low tire, they’re not always that great. In my supposedly schmancy 2011 Mustang, the TPMS can only tell you that some tire is low, and not even by how much. How useless is that? Well now that know about this new aftermarket tire monitoring system, I might just have to order one.

tirehawk tpms 1

The TireHawk Bright+ TPMS Kit works wirelessly with your iOS or Android phone to communicate the exact tire pressure and temperature of each of your vehicle’s tires in real time. And you can configure it with your optimal settings to alert you if your tire is over or under its limits.

tirehawk tpms 2

The kit includes a set of four sensors which sit on the valve stems of your tires, along with a compact wireless gateway which you can plug into your car’s cigarette lighter or USB jack and acts as a bridge between the 433Mhz sensor network and the 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi network.

There’s no word on pricing or a release date for the TireHawk system at this point, but it did just hit the FCC for approval, so I imagine it will be released very soon.

Griffin launches two iOS-based POS platforms

We’re seeing a lot of retailers and restaurants using technology-based point of sale systems these days, and Griffin wants to be the one that they turn to before anyone else. This week at CES 2013, the company has announced two new point of sale solutions for restaurants and retailers alike. Griffin has decided that iOS is where its at when it comes to POS systems, with both of these new offerings using the iPad in some way, shape or form.

kioskretail

First on the list is the company’s new Kiosk Retail, which features the iPad 2 or the iPad third-gen at the heart of everything. With Kiosk Retail, the built-in card reader has been outfitted with TDES encryption and DUKPT key management to keep things safe. While those are meant to keep data and sensitive financial information safe, the “impact-resistant” housing will keep the iPad itself safe from damage.

Anyone can stick a card reader onto an iPad and call it a point of sale solution though, so Griffin has taken it one step further and partnered with ShopKeep POS and POSiOS, two apps that have hit it big in the mobile POS space. Both apps will have support for Kiosk Retail’s hardware implemented starting February, and Griffin says that the system will be available for $299.

airstrapretail

Griffin also announced AirStrap Retail today, which is a new version of the company’s original AirStrap. This time around, there is built-in structural support for the iDynamo credit card reader, which means users will no longer have to worry about damaging the iPad or its connector. The Airstrap Retail system also benefits from grips that make it easier to hold the iPad with one hand while keeping all of the ports free and open, and it will be available sometime this month with a price tag of $49.99

Vudu and Walmart bring disc-to-digital conversions home, iOS app adds offline viewing next month

Walmart Entertainment launched its in-store disc-to-digital Ultraviolet conversion early last year, and now it’s making the process a bit simpler by letting customers do it by themselves at home. Powered by the Vudu To Go app for Mac and Windows PCs that already lets viewers stream or download movies in up to 1080p, they can search for previously-purchased movies from participating studios (DreamWorks Animation, Lionsgate, MGM Studios, Paramount Home Media Distribution, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, Universal Studios Home Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment) and then convert them: DVD to SD or Blu-ray to HD for $2, DVD to HD for $5. Like the beta feature recently launched by Best Buy’s CinemaNow, the app authorizes the copy and then you can watch it through any of the numerous Vudu / Ultraviolet-ready devices and services merely by logging in.

One other new feature on the way is the ability for Vudu users on iOS to download copies to their devices for viewing offline. We first saw the feature on mobiles when its Android tablet app launched last month, and it will come to the Apple family of hardware in mid-February. One other note as Walmart attempts to expand its “Entertainment” brand is a Facebook app that will let its fans read and submit reviews and also vote on which movies will be offered for sale in-store and online. Still need a reason to give UltraViolet a try? Vudu is tossing new users 10 free pre-selected movies just for linking their account or signing up. Check out the full list of details in the press release after the break or hit the source link to see if it’s live.

Withings introduces Smart Body Analyzer and Smart Activity Tracker

Putting in the effort to get healthy can’t usually be described as fun, and when you add that to the fact that it can be difficult to track everything you should be tracking, you have the recipe for a bunch of goals that never get completed. Luckily, CES is here and Withings has just introduced a pair of new products that can track almost every health-related statistic you can think of. If you’ve been struggling to get in shape, these products might be worth a look, if only because they should make the process of tracking your progress a bit easier.

body-analyzer-front-web

We’ll start right off with the Smart Body Analyzer, a new scale that measures your weight, body fat, and heart rate. These statistics are then stored in the Analyzer’s companion iOS or Android app using the scale’s built-in Wi-Fi or Bluetooth modules. This means that you can use the app to share your progress with your doctor, or with the social media world if you’re feeling a little brave.

What’s interesting about this scale is that it’s meant to be put in your bedroom, instead of the bathroom. The reason for this is because the scale also monitors the air quality of the room, measuring temperature and CO2 levels. By measuring the air quality, you could potentially get a better night’s sleep, which in turn leads to better health. Position Control will help you make sure you’re using the scale properly, while the app is compatible with a number of third-party health tracking services, which means you can have all of your statistics in one place.

WSAT_01

Then we have the Smart Activity Tracker, which will keep track of your “number of steps taken, strides run, distances covered, calories burned, and quality of sleep,” in addition to providing pulse tracking. Of course, this also syncs with Withings’ Health Monitor app, which can then alert you if you’ve spent too long a time being inactive and can even differentiate between moderate activity and vigorous activity.

APP_02

The Smart Body Analyzer will be available in Q1 2013 and will sport a price tag of $149. No specific release date for that one yet, and unfortunately we aren’t sure when the Smart Activity Tracker will be launching and how much it will cost. Keep it tuned here to SlashGear for more from CES 2013!

AcerCloud expands support to iOS with new features

It was at last year’s CES that Acer was seen touting the features of AcerCloud, but this year, the company has more to talk about. Acer has announced that AcerCloud will soon be expanding to iOS, meaning consumers will be able to share files between Apple’s mobile OS, Android, and Windows. This platform expansion wasn’t the only thing Acer announced today, though, as AcerCloud will also be getting a few interesting new features.

AcerCloud

Chief among these new features is perhaps the Remote Files app, which will allow users to access their Windows-based PCs from any of their devices. With Acer Cloud Docs, users will be able to push their Microsoft Office documents to their other devices, making them downloadable and readable on iOS or Android. Acer will make these documents available for 30 days after they were last modified, and unlike AcerCloud as a whole, there isn’t any storage limit when you’re working with AcerCloud Docs.

Of course, your AcerCloud storage limit is determined by how much free space you have on your PC’s hard drive, which potentially means that you can far exceed the storage capacity offered by many other cloud services. Considering that AcerCloud is a free service for Acer PC owners, that sounds like a pretty great deal, though you are essentially still paying for the service in terms of additional hard drive space.

Other features announced today include PicStream, which is a lot like AcerCloud Docs in that it will push pictures taken with one device to all of your machines (which then remain available for 30 days), and AcerCloud clear.fi, a feature that will let you sync your media libraries – music included – between all of your devices. This AcerCloud update will be available for download sometime this month, and Acer says that the new version of AcerCloud will be bundled with all of the company’s PCs starting in Q2 2013.
