iOS Do Not Disturb bug gives some users the gift of silence on New Year's Day

If you’re running iOS 6, your smartphone, media player or tablet may be taking a bit longer than usual to shake that post-party hangover. Users are reporting that the latest Apple OS’ Do Not Disturb feature remains engaged even after its scheduled period has ended, with the misstep linked to January 1st. As you can see in the screenshot above, the feature fails to flip off automatically, as confirmed by the crescent icon beside the current time — adjusting the date does seem to offer a temporary fix. When enabled, Do Not Disturb flips the device to silent mode, so you’ll need to keep an eye on the screen in order to catch phone calls, text messages and other notifications. The tool does not disable alarms set through the native Clock app, however.

There doesn’t appear to be an official fix available, but if you’re experiencing this issue, you can cancel that last-minute Genius Bar appointment — Apple reps aren’t likely to have a solution just yet. And, if you’ve been trying to reach an iPhone owner without success, expect a call back only once they’ve had a chance to check their device. New Year’s bugs seem to be an annual tradition at Apple — the alarm is a frequent target, and while this is the first year for an extended DND, the feature just launched in late 2012 with iOS 6.

[Thanks, Martyn]

Update: So, apparently Apple didn’t get the memo. Cupertino’s latest iPhone 5 ad, titled “Dream” and embedded after the break, transports you to the wonderful world of Do Not Disturb. Venus and Serena Williams are playing ping-pong and everything is white. So fun. And when was the ad first released? Just this morning. Didn’t you get the notification?

Google’s new web ad campaign tries to tempt iOS developers

Google may have a lot on its plate with Android and its ad business, but that doesn’t mean it can’t take the time to make quality apps for iOS. Lately we’ve been seeing Google make a push for Apple‘s mobile operating system, releasing new apps like Google Maps after Apple decided to give the navigation business a spin. However, iOS apps don’t just spring up from the ground – Google obviously needs developers to make these apps happen, so it has rolled out a new web ad campaign to attract the talent it requires.

GoogleiOSad

It isn’t anything spectacular, just a small little box ad that switches through slides showing off Google’s iOS app offerings. It also invites developers to “Do cool things that matter,” and tells them that they “can reshape Google on iOS.” The ad is currently being shown on a variety of sites, but in case you haven’t seen it yet, one YouTube user has captured it on video and you can check it out below.

Clicking on the ad will take you to a page featuring a brief interview with Ken Bongort, who works on the Google Search App team. The interview is quite obviously meant to relay what it’s like to work as an app developer at Google, with Bongort talking about what kind of person these iOS app teams are looking for and what the most rewarding part of launching a new app is.

Those who are interested in working as an iOS app developer for Google can apply through that page, so if it sounds like something you’d want to do, it may not be a bad idea to fill out an application. This expansion seems to suggest that we’ll be seeing much more from Google in the iOS space moving forward, which is always exciting. Even though Google already has a number of its biggest apps available on iOS, we’re sure there’s plenty planned for the future, so stay tuned.

iOS jailbreak app store Installous shuts down, Hackulous closes up shop

The dev team behind the popular pirate app store for iOS, Installous, has announced that they have closed their doors and have shut down Installous as well. The team blames “stagnant” forums and the difficulty in moderating them as the reason behind their decision to kill the service, which will undoubtedly be a huge victory against iOS software piracy.

Installous

Hackulous has been a big name in the jailbreak community for years, and jailbreakers will no doubt miss their company. The one-stop shop for “cracked” or pirated apps and games on iOS was one of the main reasons that users jailbroke their iOS devices, but it looks like users will have to pony up that $0.99 for an app or game they would’ve gotten for free from Installous.

While Hackulous blames the lack of participation in the forums, we find it hard to believe that there was little activity on there, especially given the notoriety of Hackulous in the piracy and jailbreak world. The Hackulous repository, which was home to Installous and AppSync, a tweak that allowed users to sync their cracked apps with iTunes, has been taken offline.

Sadly, users who currently have Installous installed on their jailbroken iOS device will no longer be able to access the app, which will immediately prompt you with a “Installous will now terminate” message, and will simply go back to the iOS homescreen. This is certainly a small victory against app piracy in general, but it’s very likely that other developers will pick up where Hackulous left off.

RunKeeper for iPhone updates with redesign and live activity tracking

The ever popular health and fitness tracking iPhone app RunKeeper has been updated to version 3.0 today. The update includes an all-new design that aims to make the user interface cleaner and simpler to use, it also comes with new features that make it easy to share your progress with friends and family.

runkeeper-3

Indeed, the user interface is a lot cleaner this time around. The team behind the app ended up cleaning up a lot of the code by scrapping the bold colors and text for a cleaner design that’s easier to read and navigate. They also wanted to design the app to showcase more of your personal fitness story, and they hope that the new look motivates its users even more.

One of the main selling points of RunKeeper is that the app makes it easy to set a goal and track your progress towards that goal, while also interacting and competing with friends right from the app. They’ve made it even easier by adding a few more features to the app, such as in-app photo features that allow you to take pictures before, during, and after workouts and share those with friends on Facebook or Twitter.

You now also enable live activity tracking, which allows friends and family to follow your progress in real-time and cheer you on as they do so. The company has more plans in the future for the app, including an update for the Android version of RunKeeper, but the company says they’ll have more features to come in 2013.

RunKeeper is a free download, and the update is available now in the iTunes App Store.

Auxo app switcher for iOS 5.1 available now in Cydia

The popular new app switcher that we told you about a couple weeks ago is now available for iOS 5.1 devices and higher. Previously, it was only available for iOS 6 devices, but the developer has now released it for those who aren’t willing to upgrade to Apple’s latest operating system. The jailbreak is only available for iPhone at the moment.

auxo-580x3301

The app switcher costs $1.99 in the Cydia store, which is actually a small price to pay for a huge upgrade to iOS’s default app switcher. Auxo provides webOS-esque cards in the app tray instead of just icons, and with a quick swipe downward, you can easily close out apps in an instant — a much quicker way than Apple’s built-in method.

The tweak also comes with an enhanced music player that gives you basic controls and even the ability to view album artwork. If you swipe further to the left, there are also toggles for various settings, like WiFi and Airplane Mode, as well as a slider to adjust brightness, which is a perfect setting for those not keen on the automatic adjustment.

We should clarify that the Auxo app switcher is for iOS 5.1 and up, not iOS 5.0.x. The tweak won’t work on iOS versions older than iOS 5.1. However, this shouldn’t be a huge problem for most users, since a lot you are probably running at least iOS 5.1 anyway, but it’s important we point that out before you end up paying two dollars for a tweak that won’t work for you.

iOS Pirated App Store Installous Shuts Down

installous 640x360 iOS Pirated App Store Installous Shuts DownIf the main reason you jailbreak your iOS device is because you want to downloaded pirated apps as opposed to tweaking the operating system to your liking, then you might be interested to learn that Hackulous has announced that they will be shutting down. What this means is that jailbreakers who jailbreak their iOS device for Installous will need to source alternative places for their crack IPAs. According to the folks at Hackulous, they claim that they are shutting down as less and less people frequent their forums, making it difficult for them to moderate and keep online. Considering that we’re pretty sure many people pirate their iOS apps, perhaps there might be another reason to them shutting down. Of course there are other means of downloading and installing pirated iOS apps on your iDevice, but Installous was known as being one of the more “professional” and user-friendly options out there.

Auxo App Switcher Will Make You Want to Jailbreak Your iOS Device

Even though iOS has gone through six major revisions, multitasking remains one of the weakest facets of Apple’s mobile devices. A clever designer has set out to change all that and designed an app switcher that is still simple and easy to use but is far more useful than Apple’s approach. Now his design has been realized as a jailbreak app.

auxo app switcher by sentry

The Auxo app switcher was conceptualized by The Verge forum member Sentry. When the user summons the app switching interface, Auxo shows a preview window for each running app, along with their icons and names. You can then swipe down on an app to close it; you can even swipe on two apps at the same time to close both of them. As if that wasn’t enough, Auxo also improves on the playback interface and provides easy access to the most commonly toggled settings. Watch this video made by iDownload Blog for a demo:

Sentry originally designed Auxo to take advantage of the longer screen of the iPhone 5, which is a bit cruel because it’s a jailbreak app since up until now there hasn’t yet been a proper jailbreak for the iPhone 5. Those of you with other jailbroken devices running iOS 6 can get Auxo from the Big Boss repository on Cydia for just $1.99 (USD). The rest of us can only hope that Apple hires Sentry and his developer colleagues and make Auxo part of iOS.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: December 28, 2012

Welcome to Friday evening everyone. The weekend is about to kick off, but luckily for us, it’s chosen to wait patiently while we recap the news. We heard today that the Samsung Galaxy S IV may ship in April with S-Pen functionality, which is exciting for all of us who love the Galaxy Note II. Speaking of the Galaxy Note II, we saw a leaked press shot of the handset in black today, while Instagram use was seen surging on iOS and Android but taking a hit on Facebook.

Samsung might be headed for a rather large fine ($15 billion to be exact) for trying to secure a ban on Apple products in Europe, and Apple dropped its infringement claims on the Galaxy S III Mini in the patent case against Samsung. One Android developer has unleashed a bunch of fake apps on the Google Play Store, so watch out for that, while Microsoft is trying to get the legions of iOS developers to start making apps for Windows Phone.

Crystal Dynamics confirmed that its upcoming Tomb Raider reboot will indeed have a multiplayer mode, and Microsoft’s Research lead announced that he will be retiring from the company in 2014. Quentin Tarantino was overheard suggesting that Killer Crow will be title of the third movie in his historical revenge trilogy, and we caught a glimpse of a handful of Apple prototypes from the 1980s. After this morning’s leak, more images of the Huawei Ascend Mate surfaced, while one analyst said that the iPad mini is proving to be a big hit over in China.

Fujitsu today said that it probably won’t meet its target for PC shipments in fiscal 2012 and blamed the miss on weak consumer demand for Windows 8, and Xbox Live cloud storage is currently down with Microsoft trying to implement a fix quickly. OneWed has arrived on iPad to give you ideas for your wedding, one very cool YouTube video is giving us a look at two Halo 4 armor abilities that were left on the cutting room floor, and Toyota has introduced its new 2013 Crown line in Japan. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy the weekend folks!

OneWed wedding inspiration photos app heads to iPad

There’s a brand new wedding inspiration app in town by the name of OneWed and it’s about to take the iPad by storm. Not because it’s the most amazing app ever written, not because it does anything one function better than apps like Pinterest or Tumblr, but because it’s a non-stop one-stop-shop for wedding-related photos. And that’s it.

asdfdsa

Back when the OneWed team formed their website for the desktop-based internet, they made it to be a blog, and they had honest-to-god bloggers writing for them on the daily. Speaking with TechCrunch about the history of the OneWed ecosystem, CEO John Scrofano noted this week that “We built [OneWed] on the back of this blogger model and the content we had produced…but what we were hearing our customers say is ‘we really love the pictures. Bloggers were writing all these articles for us, but really [users] just wanted the pictures.” Imagine that, right at the dawn of the tablet, too!

This company was originally called Nearlyweds, if you’re an old-school fan and remember such a thing, and is being re-launched as both OneWed.com and an iPad app that takes on the always lovely Massive Photo layout that you’ll be familiar with if you’re a fan of any number of photo blogging websites / apps. Here each product, wedding idea, and everything in-between is given its own page and links to relevant websites, details, and even connections to local retailers that have what you’re looking for in stock.

wagwe

This app is completely free from the iTunes App Store right this minute and is currently available for iPad only. At the moment there’s no word of expansion to Android or the iPhone, but they’ve only just launched this month! Have a peek at let us know if you’re all about the wedding planning, even if you’ve already been wed, won’t get wed for a long number of years, or won’t get traditionally hitched ever!

Microsoft enticing iOS developers to build apps for Windows

Both iOS and Android have a ton of apps to choose from — over 700,000 each, to be exact. However, Windows 8 and Windows RT aren’t quite there yet as far as having a rounded out app store. The Windows Store only has 100,000 apps available so far, but Microsoft is working hard to raise that number, to the point where they’re wooing iOS developers to build Windows apps.

sg_microsoft_windows8_10-L

According to MIT’s Technology Review, Microsoft invited a select group of iOS developers to the company’s headquarters to talk Windows apps. During the two-day meeting, Microsoft execs outlined how developers could create apps that meshed with its software for Windows PCs and tablets, and encouraged them to produce versions of their apps for the Windows Phone platform.

Microsoft hosted multiple development sessions over the two days in order to give developers a better grasp on how to make apps for the Windows Store. A Windows developer answered questions on stage, such as questions relating to design style, and the dos and don’ts to what developers can do with their Windows apps as far as functionality.

Some of the developers in attendance applauded Microsoft’s professionalism and the bold look of the new Windows platform. However, others questioned Microsoft’s decision to use one operating software for PCs, phones, and tablets, saying that writing apps for PCs, tablets, and smartphones is a “nightmare.” A lot of developers, though, turned out to be interested in making apps for Windows, especially since the Windows Store isn’t as clogged up as the iTunes App Store or Google Play store. It’ll only be a matter of time before we find out if Microsoft’s hard work is paying off.
