Google Maps for iOS may not last long, according to analyst

If you happened to jump on the Google Maps for iOS bandwagon a couple days ago, only because you thought Apple might take the app down, you’re not alone. According to Technology Business Research analyst Ezra Gottheil, the new Google Maps app may not stay in the iTunes App Store forever, mentioning that a rejection into the App Store should’ve been “out of the question” in the first place.

previewdirections-580x326

Gottheil says that if, sometime down the line, if Apple believes that they have a superior app and if they have a compelling reason to do so, “they may choose not to accept Google Maps in some future manifestation.” This isn’t anything new, though, since Apple has rejected apps in the past by citing duplication of effort with the company’s own pre-installed apps.

However, Gottheil says that “Apple doesn’t want to force their users to use their Map app,” but once Apple Maps improves and there’s a lot of money at stake, don’t be surprised if you see Google’s Maps app gone from the App Store. The likelihood of this happening remains to be seen, though, but Gottheil notes that Apple shouldn’t have anything to worry about, since not all iOS users will download Google Maps, and that all iOS users will have Apple Maps anyway.

While Google Maps may be a better option than Apple Maps for some users, Google Maps doesn’t come with the benefits of being integrated into the iOS interface. Apple Maps works seamlessly with Siri, making it easy to pull up a map or get directions to a location just by spitting out the name and address. Check out our comparison of the two apps to learn more.

Apple corrects potentially deadly Australian map error

Over the weekend, Australian authorities issued a warning to Apple users that Apple Maps had an error that could be “life threatening,” sending users off into a scorching desert-like national park. The problem resulted from the platform confusing a barren state park with Mildura, a city about 44 miles away. In response, Apple has pushed out an update, correcting the issue.

As you can see from the screenshot above, Mildura and the Murray Sunset National Park are a fair distance away from each other. Apple Maps didn’t see it that way, however, and had the city placed in the middle of the national park. Drivers were directed to turn into the state park instead of up to Mildura, something that could be deadly.

As a result of the error, one user ended up lost in the park for 24 hours, with temperatures reaching nearly 115-degrees Fahrenheit during the hottest part of the day. Three other motorist have all been lost in the park as a result of Apple Maps as well, requiring rescue. In response, Australian authorities issued this statement: “We’ve had at least four documented cases. The map puts [Mildura] at least 70 kilometres from where it should be. We have had people bogged down in Sunset country.”

In response to the warning, Apple pushed out an update to Maps earlier today that has Mildura in its correct location. Presently, it is being reported by the Guardian that Apple Maps still lists another Mildura as being located near the park, but that the false city isn’t displayed in searches. The problem originated in September.

Instagram Updates iOS, Android App With Improved Camera, Foursquare Integration

Amateur mobile photojournalists have flocked to Instagram over the past year or so, and boy, do you guys love your filters. The company has been making headlines lately with its lack of Twitter support, and vice versa, but today the company announced some good news as it’s launched a big update to its iOS and Android application.

One of the biggest parts of Instagram’s update is to its camera, which at first will be available to only iOS users. Instagram’s camera has been revamped to offer an “Instagram-themed” shutter button, immediate access to your camera roll, and an optional grid guide while taking photos and a permanent grid guide when scaling and cropping pictures.

Instagram will also have Foursquare integration which can be seen on location pages which can open the Foursquare application, or a mobile site with details of the venue if you’re phone doesn’t have the Foursquare app.

A new filter called “Willow,” improvements to Instagram’s tilt-shift blur feature and general speed improvements to the application round out the update. The update should be available now for you to snag on iOS and Android.

Instagram for iOS updates with new camera, new filter, and Foursquare integration

Instagram has had a tough past few days with the whole Twitter debacle, but they’re attempting to bounce back thanks to a new update for its iOS app. The update comes with an updated camera interface, as well as a brand-new filter that you can play around with. Plus, it also comes with Foursquare integration for those that love to check-in to places and share it with their friends.

The new version comes with a redesigned camera that integrates with the iOS camera roll, which makes it cleaner and faster to add photos that you’ve already shot to Instagram. There’s also new optional grid guides that you can enable when shooting photos, as well as a permanent grid on the scaling and cropping screen.

Another major new addition is the integration of Foursquare data. For now on, location pages will have a Foursquare button that can open either the app or a mobile web version with details about the location. It’s definitely a welcomed featured, especially considering Instagram’s Photo Map made locations an important part of the experience.

Lastly, there’s improved tilt-shift functionality and also a new filter called “Willow” that’s making its way to Android as well. The update is rolling out now to the iTunes App Store, as well as the Google Play store for the Android version. We’re currently not seeing the updates, so if you’re experiencing the same, it looks like you’ll have to be patient for a little bit.

Instagram for iOS gets a newly reworked camera, delves into recent photo history

Instagram for iOS gets a newly retroinspired camera, delves into recent photo history

Instagram knows it can’t stay still just because it’s under Facebook’s wing. Accordingly, a new iOS update has delivered a (quite frankly welcome) remake of the camera and editing interfaces. While snapping photos, there’s a more stylized interface with an optional grid to perfect that rule-of-thirds composition, if you like keeping shots neat and tidy. The app makes a greater effort to acknowledge past photos, too: everyone sees the most recent camera roll photo, while iPhone 5 owners’ extra screen real estate gives them a new camera roll image picker to sift through their archives. Android users don’t get the tweaked layout at this stage, but they do share the same obligatory new image filter, Willow. Check the source links for a fresh coat of paint on a day-to-day app.

Office for iPad referenced on French and Romanian Microsoft support sites

Office for iPad referenced on French & Romanian Microsoft support sites

Officially there is no Office for iPad… or iOS or Android. But, it seems a foregone conclusion that the premier productivity suite will be crossing those ecosystem boundaries. In addition to countless rumors and alleged screenshots, now references to the app are cropping up on Microsoft’s own sites. Documents over at the French and Romanian Office support pages have been tagged (incorrectly) as applying to “Office Mobile for iPhone,” “Excel for iPad,” “Lync for iPhone,” and “PowerPoint for iPad.” The docs in question don’t actually pertain to these unreleased products, but the repeated mislabeling across documents and languages (presumably by Microsoft employees) would seem to indicate they actually exist. Of course, it could all be an elaborate hoax, but we’d find that pretty hard to swallow.

Microsoft References Office Applications For iOS In Support Documents

For years now, Microsoft has been extending its more popular first-party applications to other platforms such as iOS and Android, but one first-party application that has alluded going cross-platform has been its Microsoft Office suite of applications. We’ve been hearing rumors of its existence and inevitable release for several months now, but a recent leaked document may have finally hit the nail on the head in regards to Microsoft Office making the jump to additional platforms.

According to Mac4ever, a number of references to Microsoft Office products have been making their way into Microsoft’s support site. “Office Mobile for iPhone,” “Excel for iPad” and “PowerPoint for iPad” can all be seen within support documents on Microsoft’s support site.

Was the inclusion of these possible applications made in error, or is Microsoft planning to finally release its Office to other platforms, specifically the iOS platform? We have reached out to Microsoft for comment and will certainly update this story as soon as we hear back from them. For now, keep hope alive that Microsoft will finally wise up and decide to release Microsoft Office onto additional mobile platforms.
