52.5 million Windows Phone devices expected to be sold next year according to Digitimes Research

According to the folks at Digitimes, it seems like come 2013, they expect that about 52.5 million Windows Phone devices will be sold. This of course pales in comparison to iOS and Android, but it seems that despite predictions of Android taking the lead while iOS sits second, their analysis has them believing that Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform will take third place at 6.1% market share, while RIM will come in fourth at 3.7%. It’s probably not what Microsoft had in mind, but considering that iOS and Android have had pretty good head starts, perhaps it might be a while before Windows Phone starts seeing larger numbers. However these predictions probably can’t take into account the fact that RIM’s Blackberry 10 platform and its accompanying devices will launch next year, and assuming it takes off the way RIM has intended, perhaps RIM may very well snatch the third spot from Microsoft. Either way we can’t wait to see, but what do you guys think? Will Microsoft claim third, or do you think RIM’s Blackberry 10 will have what it takes to steal the spotlight?

Apple quietly hires security guru that rescued Windows Vista

Apple has had to take security more seriously when a larger user base and the cloud have opened up greater risks. Thanks to a just-discovered hire, we now know 1 Infinite Loop isn’t messing around. While many of us were fixated on new iPhones in September, the company was quietly recruiting Kristin Paget as a Core OS Security Researcher. She’s had stints at eBay and Google, but she’s best-known for helping Microsoft while she was a security researcher at IOActive: not only did her team burst the bubble of Windows Vista engineers who thought their code was airtight, the group ultimately delayed the entire OS release to get security up to snuff. Given that Vista avoided most of the malware chaos that affected Windows XP even after Service Pack 2, Paget bodes well for the future protection of Apple’s platforms. Just don’t expect her to talk shop when she’s a security expert at a firm that tends to really, really value its secrecy.

10terra wood iPhone 5 case Review

There’s nothing quite like spending several hundred dollars on some of the most advanced smartphone technology in the world with the iPhone 5, then covering it with wood. That’s exactly what you’re going to be doing with the 10terra wood iPhone 5 case, and in this case, you’ll be working with the Tree design. The folks at 10terra currently have a relatively limited set of wooden cases, made for the two most recent iPhone sizes, the iPad back to the 2, and the Nexus 7, and they’re all made from high-quality bamboo – real bamboo, accept no imitations.

You’ll be working with slightly different sets of tones depending on which unit you get and will, of course, be getting a unique case no matter what as each case is made of real wood. This bamboo is carbonized with the same hardwood floor technique that many modern homes work with, and everything feels no less than top quality from start to finish. Right at the start when you pull the case out of the box you’ll get in the mail, you’ll notice something strange – it comes in two pieces and doesn’t clip on to your device the way essentially all other cases do.

Instead you’ve got some padding int he back and a fit around your device that’s so precise that the case holds it together like magic. There’s also a sort of tongue of wood from one side that goes under the other so there’s an extra bit of hold-together for the whole final product. You can rest easy, also, knowing that your case’s top and bottom pieces will have the grain matching up perfectly, each case being cut from the same single piece at the start.

The 10terra wood iPhone 5 case allows you to access all of your buttons and ports with ease with the single exception being the headphone port at the bottom if you’ve got non-standard headphones plugging in. As you can see at the bottom there’s a longer tunnel you’ll have to get through than you would with many other cases, but if you’ve got a standard set of iPhone EarPods, you’ll have no trouble at all.

This case is going to cost you a cool $36.95 right this minute if you order from 10terra and, again, they’ve got several other models for other devices as well. Every case is hand-finished and has a lovely laser-etched tree design on the back and the brand 10terra on the side of the volume button side of the case – real distinct, real classy.

DoorBot lets you see and talk with who’s at the door from the comfort of your smartphone (video)

DoorBot lets you see and talk with who's at the door from the comfort of your smartphone video

If funding is successful, you’ll be able to wave hello to Edison Junior’s DoorBot — an app-enabled, WiFi-connected video doorbell. Sure, it’s not exactly the first time we’ve seen such an idea, but the “weather-resistant,” aluminium enclosure makes it one of the best looking concepts we’ve seen. Better yet, the system is set to work in unison with the Lockitron (a smartphone-controlled keyless door lock that was recently crowd-funded, albeit still yet to ship) allowing you to let welcome visitors inside your abode at the tap of your iOS or Android Device’s app screen.

The DoorBot installs with four screws, but it’ll have you running through four AA batteries once a year for power (which, based on the video, seem easily removable by strangers, unfortunately). There’s no word on the quality of the camera onboard, however, it’s infared-equipped, so you’ll be able to see who’s there at night. Lastly, the actual doorbell button is wrapped with an LED light, and, as you’d expect, it alerts you via the app when pressed to see and speak with whomever is at the door.

In total, Edison Junior hopes to raise a lofty $250,000 to make the DoorBot more than a concept video, with 45 days to reach the goal. If you’re willing to take the gamble as backer, $169 is what’ll cost to secure a pre-order, and $319 snags you one bundled with the Lockitron. We’re told that we’ll see a working prototype in the flesh at CES, but until then, you can catch the full sales pitch at the source link and video demo after the break.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour now available [UPDATE]

Right on the money, both Rockstar and Gameloft have released their respective games to the mobile market. Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour are now available for purchasing and downloading in the iTunes App Store. While Modern Combat 4 is planned to be released on Android “shortly after” today, Vice City was actually planned to have a simultaneous launch. However, the Android version seems to be MIA for the time being.

Modern Combat 4 costs $6.99, which may seem like a steep price, but you can’t really go wrong with one of the best first-person shooters on any mobile platform. Plus, it works on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and the iPad. Also if you didn’t already know, the game comes with multiplayer, complete with leaderboards and over 20,000 weapon arrangements.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City will cost you $4.99, the same price as Grand Theft Auto III when it launched not too long ago. As aforementioned, the Android version seems to be MIA. The Google Play store link shows up in Google search results, but clicking on it will lead to a 404. It’ll probably only be a matter of time before it’s fixed, so we’ll update you once it goes live in the Google Play store.

UPDATE: Rockstar has issued a statement on the missing Android version of the game:

“We’re aware that some users have attempted to download Vice City: 10th Anniversary Edition from the Google Play Store and have experienced validation errors. Just to be clear: the game is not available for Android devices just yet, and if you’re seeing it listed on the Store then this is an error, and you shouldn’t attempt to download it. We’ll keep you up to date and let you know as soon as the game is live and available to purchase.”

While Rockstar originally said that the game would be released on iOS and Android at the same time, it looks like that’s no longer the case.

If you’ve played GTA: Vice City before, the mobile version will be very familiar to you, since it’s essentially a port of the console and PC version, but with a few few enhancements implemented, including updated character models and lighting effects, as well as more precise firing and targeting options with weapons.

Download Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City for iOS now.

Snapseed launches on Android with Google+ integration, now completely free

Snapseed launches on Android with Google+ integration, now completely free

While this shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, today Google put to rest any lingering doubts about keeping Snapseed alive and well. After acquiring Nik Software last September, Google’s just launched Snapseed for Android and refreshed the existing iOS app. The Android version features seamless Google+ integration (complete with support for Instant Upload) and the iOS version gains a few additional filters. Better yet, the app is now completely free on both platforms (it was $4.99 in the App Store).

If you’re not familiar with Snapseed, it’s an incredibly powerful yet easy-to-use photo editor based on Nik Software’s award-winning professional-grade imaging tools. The app provides a super-intuitive gesture-based UI to capture, tweak, enhance and share pictures. As such, it’s more advanced than Instagram, but far simpler than Photoshop Touch. It’s available for phones, tablets, Macs and PCs (no word from Google on whether the desktop version was also updated).

We spent some time with Snapseed for Android yesterday and it looks and feels pretty much identical to the iOS version — the user experience is just as polished and responsive. In the main screen, you’ll find a new button which lets you post an image directly to Google+ via the same UI as the the Google+ app. There’s a separate button to save pictures to the gallery (this also sends photos to Google+ if you’ve enabled Instant Upload in the Google+ app). Want more info? Peek at our IRL post and the galleries below.

Twitterrific 5 for iOS available now via the App Store

Despite the uncomfortable environment Twitter has created for third-party clients that compete with its own app, the Iconfactory has forged ahead and released Twitterrific 5 for iOS users. The app will be available for users on December 6, which accounts for most of the world at this point. Pacific time zone Apple users will have to wait two more hours to nab it.

Version 5 of Twitterrific brings with it a completely revamped user interface, which has been redesigned from scratch. The default style itself is quite different than Twitter’s style, but it can be modified to suit users’ own individual tastes. Colors, text sizes, and fonts can all be changed, line height can be modified, avatars can be removed if you don’t want to view them, and other options, such as automatically toggling between light and dark themes when its daytime and nighttime.

Other features include switching between accounts easily, viewing in-app notifications about tweets, pull-to-refresh, and support for VoiceOver, among others. IPad users get a pinnable sidebar to make things easier, while all users can utilize threaded DM view. The app can be time-synced to iCloud, and will automatically translate foreign language tweets into the user’s default language.

The Iconfactory is offering a limited-time discount of 50-percent to celebrate the launch. Users can nab Twitterrific 5 for iOS from iTunes or the App Store for $2.99. The app is 5.1MB in size, and is compatible with the iPhone 3GS/4/4S/5, iPod Touch 3rd/4th/5th generations, and the iPad. Must be running iOS 5 or higher.
