Rovio launching Amazing Alex for iOS and Android on July 12th

Ready for Rovio’s next mobile game? The company purchased the intellectual property rights to Casey’s Contraptions back in May, saying that it was going to revamp the game with new levels and updated graphics. Now Rovio has said that Amazing Alex will debut on iOS and Android tomorrow, on July 12th. While a rebrand and relatively minor update might not be all that exciting, it will bring the game to a new audience through Rovio’s brand and marketing pizzazz.

The original game, Casey’s Contraptions, saw players manipulating objects in order to solve physics-based puzzles, often resembling Rube Goldberg machines. The trailer for Amazing Alex hints at the same sort of gameplay, with the titular character starting a chain reaction with a simple flick of a domino.

There’s no word on what the game will cost, although we imagine it will be aimed at the lowest pricing tiers for iOS and Android, if not free. Make sure to check the Play Store and App Store tomorrow and pray you don’t have a particularly busy day at work.

Starbucks Android app gets caffeinated update, also launches in UK and Canada

Starbucks Android app gets caffeinated update, launches in UK and Canada

Americans have enjoyed the freedom to choose between Starbucks apps on both iOS and Android for over a year, and now the Google-flavored iteration is now finally going abroad, launching in both the UK and Canada today. The launch coincides with an app update for all users on the North American continent and across the pond. You’ll now be able to connect your phone to your Starbucks Card payment account, seek out nearby caffeine outlets and gleefully obsess over rewards and balances. The refresh also adds a widget for your presumably otherwise bare homescreen. This first global rollout now totals over 14,000 locations to use your Starbucks Card to pay, with PayPal functionality also rolled into both the US and Canadian iterations. Hit up the PR after the break for the nitty-gritty.

Rovio’s Amazing Alex arrives on Android and iOS July 12th, bosses everywhere weep for lost productivity (video)

Rovio's Amazing Alex arrives on Android and iOS July 12th, bosses everywhere weep for lost productivity video

It’s finally happening: after roughly two and a half years, Rovio Mobile is weaning itself off of its addiction to avians. The company’s first non-bird title in what feels like an eternity, Amazing Alex, will be reaching the official stores for both Android and iOS come July 12th. Strictly speaking, Rovio is taking something of a shortcut to bringing this Incredible Machine-style puzzler to market: it bought the rights to Casey’s Contraptions and enlisted the developers, Miguel Friginal and Noel Llopis, to bring the title into the Rovio family. While that means it’s not quite as fresh as it could be, the game has already piqued our interest and could be exposed to many (many, many) more players. While we wait, we’ll pour one out for the managers and supervisors bound to lose hours of work from staff trying to finish just one more level.

Pure unleashes Contour 100i iDevice speaker with swiveling dock

Pure intros Contour 100i speaker dock with

It was this past CES when we got a quick look at Pure’s curvy Contour 200i AirPlay system, and now the company is getting a bit more basic — and wallet-friendly — with its 100i. It may not be wireless, but this little rig pumps out a maximum of 20 watts through its speakers and features an FM radio, an auxiliary port, a headphone jack and a remote. Although it’s exceedingly par the course as far as speaker docks go, the 100i does feature a swiveling dock that stows away when you’re not mounting your iDevice. Additionally, Pure’s made its internet radio-enabling Lounge app free for a limited timed from the iTunes and Google Play store, noting plans to launch a subscription service later this year. The unit is only compatible with iThings, but it can be had now at Brookstone for $169 bucks if your interest is piqued. You’ll find more info in the press release after the break.

Airbus Electronic Flight Bag apps save iPad savvy pilots time and paper

Airbus Electronic Flight Bag apps for iPad savvy pilots save time and paper

For a while now, iPads have been used to replace paper in a pilot’s daily duties. Airbus is also looking to further the cause with its Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) applications for the Apple slate. Pretty soon, airlines will have an alternative to existing EFB tech that runs PC operating systems with the “FlySmart with Airbus” app suite. The apps will allow crews to calculate performance and consult manuals without the need to cart around several hundred printed pages. Of course, to gain access to said software in the App Store, you’ll need to be a customer in order to obtain the requisite download permissions.

iPad Mini and iPhone 5 pre-production models appear in China

Both the fabled iPad Mini and the iPhone 5 from Apple appear to have been leaked today from a manufacturing plant in China, with prefab models being leaked in blurry photo form. While it’s not out of the question that both of these mobile models could indeed be in model stages (or that their molds would still be out there somewhere if they’re near production), we encourage you to go heavy on the grains of salt with this particular situation. On the other hand, both models appear, courtesy of GottaBeMobile to replicate closely what we’ve seen before in image leaks for both the iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini.

What we’re seeing here, or what we’re being shown here by a relatively skilled creator of 3D-modeled products. The iPad Mini, up first, shows two speaker grilles across the bottom of the device with a single tiny dock connector that we must assume is the much-hyped but not yet confirmed 19-pin dock connector that Apple may or may not be introducing with the iPad Mini and the iPhone 5 this Autumn. The iPad Mini will essentially have around a 7.85-inch display, will be about 2/3 the size of the current iPad, and will be just about 4/5 as thick.

The iPhone 5, on the other hand, does not appear to be made of the same 3D-modeling plastic that the iPad Mini does. Instead we’ve got one solid hunk of what must be aluminum. The only reason we can think of that this device model would be made of one big hunk of metal would be that it’s set up for some sort of process which involves great amounts of heat – don’t want it to melt!

You’ll want to hit up our [iPhone 5 portal] to see everything we’ve seen on what could potentially be happening with this next-generation smartphone. For iPad Mini news, head to the timeline below and have yourself a feast!

Wikiweb: The Connection Between Wikipedia Articles Beautifully Visualized [App Of The Day]

The existing Wikipedia app is fine, but there’s nothing particularly special about it. Sure it’s touch-friendly, and the interface is clean, but that’s about all it has to offer. Wikiweb, however, puts the millions upon millions of articles on the online encyclopedia into a larger perspective, by showing how they all relate to one another. More »

Twitter updates Android and iOS apps

Twitter app updateFollowing yesterday’s announcement of upgrades to Twitter’s website, Twitter announced today that it has released new updates to its iOS and Android apps. The new features of the apps include: the ability to expand apps that let you view content from partner sites from the Twitter app itself (i.e. instead of opening the web browser to take you to a Kickstarter project, you can play its video directly in the Tweet details view in the app), search autocomplete improvements, and push notification support for Tweets from your favorite Twitter accounts.

The updates for the Twitter apps are now live and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store as well as the Google Play Store (for free). Be sure to check update your official Twitter apps if you want to experience the new features mentioned above.

iPod Nano 8th gen drops the click-wheel and gains iTunes

It may very well be time for a brand new media player from Apple, the seventh generation of the tiniest of iProducts, the iPod nano to be exact. This 8th gen iPod nano is said by sources familiar with the matter speaking with Macotakara to be returning to the tall and thin form of the 5th generation iPod nano and will have the thinness (or close to) of the current generation iPod touch. This device will also herald the end of the music service Ping – this according to these same sources in China.

This next-generation iPod nano will do away with the click-wheel that for so long has been the calling card of the iPod in general, opting instead for the same sort of thumb-sized button that the iPhone and iPod touch currently has in place. This device will also be shorter than the tallest iPod nano thus far, it having a body much closer to the first generation nano, but this time having a display that’s essentially the same size as the 5th generation (something like 2.2 inches diagonally.)

More of everything, please, thank you.

The image you see at the top of this post comes from 3D renderer and developer Taiyo Fujil who has done rendering work for Macotakara before. In other words, it’s not a real photo, it’s a mock-up done with software – don’t be fooled! Head below to see the rest of the news we’ve got recently surrounding the iPod nano. It’s not often this device comes up anymore – perhaps this is the best indicator that it’s due for a refresh? We’ll more than likely see soon!

Twitter for Android, iOS expands those Kickstarter tweets, becomes sensitive to our notification needs

Twitter 43 for Android, iOS expands Etsy and Kickstarter tweets, becomes extrasensitive to your notification needs

That was fast. Just days after Twitter 4.3 had its details prematurely spilled all over the Internet, it’s now raring to go for both Android (as version 3.3) and iOS users. Like we’d seen in early release notes, its focus is on expanding tweets to provide a glimpse at content when linking beyond just photos. Along with showing snippets from news outlets such as C-SPAN, Twitter’s app now teases content from Etsy, Kickstarter and Vimeo, among others — just in case you’d like to know whether that upcoming game console is worth funding at a glance. Notifications are getting their own promised boost and can send an alert whenever certain Twitter accounts post any kind of update. The improved search autocomplete shows its face as well, and iOS users get a more advanced layout for tracking hashtags during live events. Users with other smartphone platforms will have to wait for the 4.3 feature set to filter through to their devices, but if you’re of an Apple or Google bent, one of Twitter’s bigger updates of recent memory is already headed your way.
