You Can Buy an iPad 3 with Retina Display for Cheaper Than the iPad 2

Dealzmodo! If you’re looking for the cheapest full-sized iPad available, it’s not the iPad 2 which still costs $400 brand new. Instead, the best deal on an iPad is the third-generation iPad with Retina Display. You can get it for only $380. More »

Apple rumored to phase out iPad 2 after iPad mini goes on sale

When Apple launched their new iPad (third gen), they kept the iPad 2 around as a cheaper alternative for those who didn’t really see the need for a new display or 4G LTE connectivity. Well if you’re still thinking about picking up that iPad 2, you best hurry as according to the rumors, it seems that Apple could be phasing out the iPad 2 once the iPad mini has been launched. This speculation is thanks to an investors note sent by Rob Cihra of Evercore Partners in which Cihra claims the iPad 2 will stop being sold to support Apple’s overall vision. With the iPad mini supposedly being priced cheaper, we guess as far as price points are concerned, the iPad mini would be a cheaper alternative compared to the third gen iPad, although opting for a smaller display might be a very different decision customers have to make versus older hardware (iPad 2 versus iPad 3). Either way we’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but you might want to take it into consideration nonetheless.

iPad 2 rumored to be phased out after iPad mini launch

It was just about a year-and-a-half ago when Apple unveiled the iPad 2. It was crazy thinner than the first-gen iPad and had better graphics and a faster processor. According to Evercore Partners analyst Rob Cihra, the iPad 2 will be phased out once the iPad mini launches. It might sound crazy, but Cihra says the move will streamline the company’s product line.

Cihra mentioned in a note to investors that he thinks Apple will be phasing out the iPad 2 (which Apple is still selling for a discounted $399), because the company wants “clearer product tiers.” Cirha believes that once the iPad mini is released, Apple will only have two iPad models to sell — the regular 10-inch third-generation iPad, and the new 7.8-inch iPad mini.

Cihra also believes that Apple will sell close to 7 million iPad minis in Q4, and a total of 26 million iPads during the holiday season if you count both models. Apple will soon announce its Q3 earnings, and Cihra believes Apple sold 27 million iPhones, 17 million iPads, 5.7 million iPods, and 4.9 million Macs, which would result in a revenue of $36.5 billion, with a predicted revenue of $56.1 billion in Q4.

The move to oust the iPad 2 might seem crazy since the device just came out only a year-and-a-half ago, but the strategy of Apple offering only a full-size iPad and a smaller iPad at a cheaper cost makes sense. In the meantime, we’ll have to look forward to October 23, when Apple hold an event to announce what we all expect to be the iPad mini.

Apple wins iPhone and iPad delay of ban in South Korea

Though it seemed as though Apple had lost a battle against Samsung earlier this year with a ban of both the iPad and the iPhone in South Korea, an update has been made today by the court that the defending party will be able to keep items for sale pending appeal. This event is rather similar to the situation currently happening in the USA with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, also placed back up for sale pending appeal in a completely Apple vs Samsung case. This case in South Korea had the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPad 1, and iPad 2 banned from sale due to Samsung connectivity patents.

Oddly enough, several Samsung Galaxy devices remain banned from sale in South Korea because they’ve not sought appeals as Apple has. It is because an appeal has been sought by Apple in this case that they’re able to keep their devices up for sale in the country. The August 24th ruling in this case remains in place unless Samsung decides to take action as they have – so to speak – in the USA-based case.

Here in the USA, the case regards quite a few patens owned by Apple that Apple says Samsung crossed over with the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. This is just one of several devices that Apple successfully had banned over the past year inside the USA, another of them being the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, another device that has been placed back on sale after a brief period of time this Summer.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see what’s been happening in this epic battle that’ll be going on for a long, long time. It’s this battle that Google’s own people feel will be the death of us all, you might like to know, and it’s certainly not something that we’re glad to see continue – nor is anyone not profiting from the experience, of course. Stay tuned for more device wars in the courtroom.

Virginia Beach McDonald’s adds free iPad use to its menu, McRib still seasonal

DNP McDonald's adds free iPad use to its menu, McRib still seasonal

In an age of grab and go eating, it seems somewhat odd that a fast food restaurant would feature an attraction that causes its patrons to drop anchor and stay. However, the house with well over one billion served is doing just that. A Virginia Beach McDonald’s has leveraged the popularity of another Big Mac maker, by stocking its location with free to use iPads. Yes, the tablets are mounted on tables, but after polishing off a hearty array of Mcfixings, you’re likely to be bolted to your seat as well. Franchise owner Hugh Fard got the idea while attending the annual worldwide McDonald’s convention in Florida. While it’s great to see major eateries incorporating the use of new technology, we can only wonder just how greasy shiny those fancy Retina displays will be after spending a day under the golden arches.

iNUKE BOOM Junior shrinks the iPhone speaker beast

Right at the end of last year the iNUKE BOOM was announced by behringer as the most ridiculously gigantic iPhone dock ever created – now the group has a much more reasonably sized companion. Instead of working with an 8 x 4 x 4-foot coffin of a speaker, one that cost $30k, you’ve got 8.7 x 16.5 x 9.8-inches of bulk at a much more reasonable $179.99. This device works with 2 x 1-inch tweeters, 2 x 3-inch midrange speakers, 1 x 5.25-inch woofer, and 10.6 pounds of weight – even if it is smaller, its still no pipsqueak!

This device requires that you plug into the wall to work and works with remote control that’ll take 1 x CR2025 battery that’s included in the package. You’ll be connecting your device via the standard 30-pin iPod dock in the center of the device, though other connections are allowed via a standard Line In and Aux In – that’s a stereo RCA connector, incase you’re wondering about context. You’ve also got, interestingly enough, a Video Out port too – we’ll see how we can use that upon closer inspection.

This device is compatible with a variety of Apple products right out of the box including iPhone / iPod / iPad compatibility: iPhone 4 / 4S / 3GS / 3G, iPod Touch / Nano / Classic (5th Generation), iPad 1 / 2, and The New iPad. The remote control included in the package works with most iOS devices, but will not be compatible with your iPad 2 or iPad 3. NOTE: This device does not work with the iPhone 5 – yet. You can control the volume of the set with the collection of physical buttons that sit atop the machine or you can control the sound from your audio-wielding device.

This beast looks and feels extremely basic – it’s a big hunk of black, essentially, but inside we’re pumped to hear the blasts of beats that are sung about in legends of this speaker. We’ll be getting our hands on this device sooner than later for a full review for you and yours – can’t wait! Meanwhile keep your ear to the review circuit here on SlashGear for all things great and loud!

Pogo Connect pressure-sensitive Bluetooth stylus announced, up for pre-order now

A good stylus is a must for anyone looking to do some doodling or handwriting on their iPad. Obviously, there are a ton of different styluses to choose from, but most don’t give us the features that we really need. Ten One Design has announced — what they claim to be — the world’s first pressure-sensitive Bluetooth 4.0 stylus called the Pogo Connect.

This new stylus boasts a magnetic tip system, which allows the tip to be easily removed, while also keeping it securely fastened. The company says that this special magnetic system leaves the door wide open for the possibility of releasing new interchangeable tips in the future. There’s also Bluetooth 4.0 on board, which allows for quick and easy pairing directly with an iPad in order to take advantage of some pretty slick features like pressure sensitivity and palm rejection capabilities.

Ten One Design says that the Pogo Connect is the first of its kind and includes new patent-pending technology called Crescendo Sensor, which makes the tip extremely responsive to pressure and recognizing the slightest touch. They say that Crescendo Sensor works at all angles and provides hundreds of different pressure levels.

The stylus is fully compatible with 16 iPad apps so far with more to come in the future. Some notable ones that the Pogo Connects works with are Brushes, Zen Brush, FlipBook HD, and SketchBook Pro. The stylus is powered by a single AAA battery and said to last “for months.” The Pogo Connect is available for pre-order now for $79.95.

iOS 6 review

Starting tomorrow, iOS users will be prompted to update their devices to the newest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system. As difficult as it is to believe, we’re already onto the sixth version of the OS, which continues to be updated with new features on a yearly basis. After pushing out so many upgrades critical to plugging a few major feature holes, the vast majority of its 200 advertised enhancements are strictly granular, as Apple continues to polish its popular OS.

That doesn’t mean, though, that this build is coming to the masses without any jarring UI changes: Apple has declared independence from Google by adopting its own Maps, added a few nice features to Mail and iCloud, thrown Facebook integration into the mix and introduced the Passbook for paperless tickets. The question is, how does it stack up against previous refreshes? Read on to find out.

iPad mini backplate appears in HD photos

The next-generation iPad mini, a device tipped to work with what’s essentially iPad 2 specifications save it’s smaller display, has appeared in several high-definition photos this week. The device appears here from Tech163 as a slightly more blunt version of the larger iPad 3rd generation device on the market today, including here a new dock connector hole and two sets of machine-drilled speaker holes. This device’s docking port is likely matching that of the rumored 9-pin connector set for the iPhone 5.

This device is appearing with a standard design on the back with the Apple logo shining bright and the iPad name sitting halfway between the logo and the bottom of the slate. The innards of this casing show a top-mounted headphone jack and a back-facing camera as well as a microphone hole at the center of the back of the device near the top (portrait-style) for noise cancellation as it almost certainly works with another mic closer to the bottom. The edge of this casing also shows that the front glass of the device will not be surrounded by much of any sort of hard border.

There’s a screen lock switch hole as well as two longer holes up near the upper-right of the device’s casing which are almost certainly in place for volume up/down. This device’s 7.85-inch display will more than likely be high definition as it will contain the same resolution as the current iPad 2, but smashed into a smaller space. This device will also likely be offered in at least a wi-fi-only iteration while no word has yet surfaced on the possibility of a 4G LTE or otherwise mobile-connected version of the tablet.

The iPad mini – or iPad Air, possibly, will be appearing at an event separate from the September 12th event we’re about to attend which will be the home of the iPhone 5. This October event for the iPad mini will likely also bring a refresh of the 3rd Generation iPad with an updated dock connector as well.
