Lifeproof Nüüd for iPad

So you have just gotten yourself a spanking new iPad, and will be spending countless hours down the road on the Internet to check out just what are the best kinds of protection that your iPad will be able to enjoy? Look no further if you simply “know” that your iPad is going to end up wet on some days or situations – as the £129.99 Lifeproof Nüüd will be able to offer watertight protection for your iPad.

The Nüüd Case might lack a screen cover, but there is a very good reason for that – you no longer have irritating air bubbles as well as suffer from a lack of sensitivity which can get annoying if you love playing games on your iPad that require precision from your fingers. While that might be true, the Nüüd case will ensure it has its efforts focused on protecting your iPad from damage regardless of whether you’re on the road, in a boat or even caught in sneaky snow-storm.

Sporting an official protection rating of IP68, it should be able to handle just about anything a normal user throws at it. Heck, drop it from 4 feet or less, and the iPad should still be able to work without missing a beat, now how about that? The only thing prohibitive about this would be its price point, methinks.

IRL: Ballistic Tough Jacket, Dell UltraSharp U2412M and an argument for disposable AA batteries

Welcome to IRL, an ongoing feature where we talk about the gadgets, apps and toys we’re using in real life and take a second look at products that already got the formal review treatment.

What a week. What a month! So far this September, Amazon, Nokia, Motorola and Apple have announced new products, and HTC is up next, with a press event scheduled for Wednesday. We’ll let you speak for yourselves — maybe you want more liveblogs — but we here at Engadget keen to take a break from the hands-on posts and breaking news posts and talk shop about the products we already own. This week, Jason tests a rugged tablet sleeve, Don rates his Dell monitor and Darren makes the case for disposable AAs (and yes, he has a favorite brand).

Cyclops Case Dresses Up Your iPad in (Almost) Self-Cleaning and Furry Garb

Here’s another iPad case that you can add to your growing collection (that most likely already includes the French Cover and the Moshi iGlaze iPad VersaCover): the Cyclops iPad case. It basically plays up the iPad’s design, since the ‘eye’ of Cyclops in this case is your iPad’s camera.

Cyclops iPad CaseThese cases are perfect for people who love everything furry and for those who use their tablets at home (since given their furry nature, it probably wouldn’t be the smartest thing to do to take it to the great outdoors and expose it to the elements.)

What makes the Cyclops case so different, though, are its arms. Not that you haven’t seen arms on cases before, but they aren’t just there for show or for decoration.

They’re actually made of microfiber material, so you can use them to wipe your screen and get rid of annoying smudges and finger marks.

The Cyclops iPad Case is available online from Accessory Geeks for $34.99 (USD).

ZAGG intros a pair of Bluetooth keyboard cases for the iPad, three pairs of gaming headphones

DNP Zagg

Sometimes at trade shows we see funky-looking Windows 8 devices, other times we see bags filled with a morphing rainbow colors and sometimes we see things whose importance falls somewhere in the middle. That’s the situation ZAGG finds itself in this week, as it tries to win attention at IFA amid dozens of laptop / tablet hybrids and 84-inch TVs. The company is in Berlin as we type this, showing off the new ZAGGkeys Pro and Pro Plus, two Bluetooth keyboard cases for the iPad. Both have a magnetic closure, but the Pro version adds backlighting. Those will be available at the end of September for $99 and $129, respectively. Additionally, the company announced a trio of Caliber gaming headphones, including the Stealth, a pair optimized for mobile devices, and the Axiom, which works with Macs, PCs, the Xbox and PS3. Both have in-line controls. Rounding out the list, there’s the Vanguard, which offers 7.1 channel audio. Look for these in October, for $60, $90 and $130, respectively. The PR’s embedded after the break, though you won’t find much more detail there, sadly.

LaunchPort releasing AP.3 sleeve for juicing your new iPad the inductive way

LaunchPort releasing AP.3 sleeve for juicing your new iPad the inductive way

LaunchPort is finally releasing a sleeve for the new iPad, which makes it compatible with the company’s inductive charging gear. It goes on sale in September for a hefty $149, and of course, you’ll also need at least one $199 tabletop or wall mount to connect it to. The sleeve also works with the iPad 2, and if you’re thinking about getting one, be quick — it’s only a matter of time before resonance charging renders inductive juicing a little passé.

LaunchPort AP.3 sleeve delivers inductive charging for iPads

LaunchPort’s claim to fame is being the creator of the world’s first inductive charging and mounting system for the iPad, and their latest release comes in the form of the LaunchPort AP.3 magnetic sleeve. The AP.3 will cater for the new iPad and iPad 2, so first generation iPad owners will have to sit out on this one. Fitting your iPad snugly, the AP.3 lets you mount it via magnets to the LaunchPort’s base station and wall system, and of course, most metallic surfaces will also do, although those who are more careful with their devices might think twice since having your iPad fall from a height such as a refrigerator door might result in a cracked display at worst, never mind that the risk of that happening is not all that high to begin with. Expect the inductive charging system to kick in the moment the AP.3 sleeve is connected to a Wall Station or Base Station.

This is one step closer to a wireless lifestyle, but like we mentioned in the past, it is nearly impossible to live out a wireless lifestyle just as it is to go paperless, you will still need cables and paper at one time or another, although there are creative ways to handle both. The AP.3 Sleeve will come with comfortable hand grips on each side, where it is contoured to fit perfectly, coming in black or white colors at $149 a pop.

VestGuard UK Ballistic cover will protect your iPad from tablet-related gunplay

VestGuard UK Ballistic cover will protect iPad from tabletrelated gunplay

If you find yourself in the position of regularly having your iPad shot at, VestGuard UK sure has the tablet case for you. The Ballistic cover is made of “cutting edge uni-directional aramid fibers processed to a high tolerance in VestGuard’s state of the art facility” that make it possible for the case to stop bullets from a 9mm handgun. In other words, the company’s bulletproof claims are “not a metaphor,” as stated in the post-script of its press materials. And judging from its current selection of products, which include body armor, de-mining helmets and Kevlar gloves, the company knows a thing or two about heavy duty protection. Not a lot in the way of information on availability at the moment, however, since the covers are not quite ready for sale.

Just in case you’re not quite ready to rid your studies of tree pulp, Griffin has announced the Binder Insert case for your Five Star zipper notebook. The enclosure secures the iPad 2 or third-generation model in a 3-ring binder for easy camouflage of those in-class Angry Birds habits — or for switching back and forth between a slate and the blue-lined white stuff. A stylus loop and access to the dock connector, volume controls, headphone jack and camera are also taken into consideration around the case’s edge. In order to get your learning setup just so, be ready to part with $24.99 in order to grab one.

Meet The Nuud: LifeProof’s New Waterproof Ultra-Rugged iPad Case

main

LifeProof has made a name for itself as a maker of super rugged iPhone cases that you can take in the ocean, to the beach, or even to the top of Mt. Everest. This thing can survive in some surprising environments. But today, the company has finally answered the call for a LifeProof iPad case, the Nuud. The case vacuums against the glass panel on the iPad so that there’s no front screen protector, allowing for the same tactile interaction we’ve all grown so fond of on Apple’ tablet.

But that’s not to say it loses any of its ruggedness — all the same specs migrate over from the iPhone case, including Military Grade shock and impact protection, waterproof up to 6.6 feet, and resistance against all the elements. Plus, you can plug in your headphones using the O-ring sealed headphone adapter, letting you take waterproof headphones into the pool or shower. (FYI, I would love to take care of the day’s obligatory phone calls in the shower.)

The iPad case comes with four small inserts on each corner to let you attach straps and carry it as a briefcase, alone with port covers that vacuum seal just as tight as the case itself. The camera cover is made of the same type of glass that you would find in a Nikon or Canon DSLR camera, anti-reflective on both sides.

Now, since the iPad has a capacitive display, the screen won’t work when submerged under water. That’s not to say it can’t be submerged — it would be just fine. But that’s not the point of the case. The point is to feel comfortable using your iPad at the pool or in the tub or in the rain. The LifeProof iPhone case, on the other hand, can be used under water to take pictures because of the physical shutter button.

The sheer durability of the iPhone case case along with its usability has let people do some crazy things with their iPhones — things that would make any iPhone addict cringe at the mere thought of them — but just take a look (if you dare).

It’ll be interesting to see how people use the Nuud, but my bet is that the iPad will start showing up in the bathtub, the pool and the kitchen much more.

There’s still no pricing out for the Nuud iPad case, but it should be available on store shelves and online in July.
