Even Cheaper iPad Mini Rumored To Be In The Works

Even Cheaper iPad Mini Rumored To Be In The WorksThe iPad mini was supposed to be Apple’s answer to the slew of cheap tablets in the market. However while it is cheaper than its larger sibling, it is still noticeably more pricey compared to the likes of the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HD. We guess Apple still wants to price themselves as a “premium” brand, but could a cheaper iPad mini be in the works? Rumor has it that a cheaper iPhone is in the works, so a cheaper iPad mini would not be a stretch of the imagination. According to a recent report by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, he has suggested that Apple could be looking to launch an even lower priced iPad mini before the iPad mini 2.

Apparently this lower cost iPad mini will be used to compete against the likes of Android tablets and could see it priced at around $199 to $249. However there will be some compromises made in order to achieve such a low price point, and Kuo has indicated that in order to reduce costs, features such a rear-facing camera could be removed and cut storage down to a mere 8GB. Take this with a grain of salt for now, but if you have been holding off buying an iPad due to its price, would an even cheaper iPad mini such as the rumored device mentioned above be of interest to you?

Switched On: Microsoft’s small tablet trap

Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On, a column about consumer technology.

DNP Switched On Microsoft's small tablet trap

Based on last quarter’s global PC shipment numbers, Microsoft continues to feel pain in making the case for Windows is a viable tablet operating system. Theoretically, the dual-identity (Windows 8/RT) operating system has everything it needs to be a contender, but the promise is ahead of the reality on three interdependent fronts: chip-level hardware, legacy support, and app software.

For example, if x86 chips were more competitive with ARM processors from a performance-per-watt perspective, then Microsoft wouldn’t be as reliant on Metro-style apps for functionality. And if more developers were creating Metro-style apps, then consumers wouldn’t have to go to the legacy desktop mode as much to get things done. (Until the company releases a Metro-style Office, Microsoft really can’t wag its finger too much at third parties.)

Lacking Demand May Cause 30% iPad Mini Q2 Shipments Drop

Lacking Demand May Cause 30% iPad Mini Q2 Shipments Drop

Apple investors aren’t exactly getting good news today. The company’s share price dipped under $400 today, last time this happened was back on December 22nd, 2011. Now according to upstream sources in iPad mini supply chain, lacking demand for Apple’s mini tablet might result in Q2 shipments dropping by as much as 30%. Apple is expected to ship around 10 to 12 million units this quarter as opposed to the 15 million units it shipped in the previous quarter. One reason cited for this lack in demand is that prospective customers are holding off purchases because they’re waiting for the second generation iPad mini, which will reportedly tout a Retina Display.

That seems like a logical explanation, however it might not be the whole story. Smartphones such as the Galaxy Note 2 could prove to be stiff competition for the mini tablet. There’s one in particular that can almost be considered as a full blown rival, the Samsung Galaxy Mega, a 6.3″ smartphone which is likely to give iPad mini a run for its money. Smartphones that come close to the screen real estate of the 7-inch tablet would seem like a much better choice for prospective customers as they wouldn’t have to carry around a separate smartphone and tablet. Do you think such big smartphones are eroding iPad mini’s market share?

Supposed iPad 5 cases found in Hong Kong

Now that the fourth-generation iPad has been around for several months, it’s high time we had some rumors and tips surrounding the generation that’s up next! The iPad 5 case mold that we’re seeing today has been passed on to some case-makers who suggest that this iteration of the tablet will have a 9.7-inch display as it’s had before, but that its body will be slimmer with a smaller bezel – strange, isn’t it?

ipad-5-case-2013-04-16-3

With this version of the iPad we’ll once again be seeing the Lightning connector on the bottom of the tablet, a microphone hole up top on the back, and speaker holes on the bottom too. This model has the same display lock, same location for a headphone jack, and same placement of a volume button. It’s as if this version of the iPad hasn’t change at all for the basics. Even the camera appears to be the same size.

The big differences come in the thinness of the body and the wideness and tallness of the overall tablet design. This leaked mold suggests that Apple might be taking the same approach Sony has taken with their updated design of the Xperia Z with the Xperia XL. Tossing out everything that’s not absolutely essential in the design, here we’ve got a display that will appear much closer to an edge-to-edge situation than in previous tablets.

Apple’s 2013 Products Could Be Delayed Due To Development Issues

Apples 2013 Products Could Be Delayed Due To Development Issues

An analyst at KGI Securities, Ming-chi Kuo, predicts in a research note that Apple’s mobile products for 2013 may be delayed due to various development issues. These products include iPhone 5S, the second generation iPad mini and the low cost iPhone. With the exception of second generation iPad mini, a lot has already been rumored about iPhone 5S and the substantially cheaper iPhone. Rumor has it that iPhone 5S will come in multiple sizes and will feature fingerprint technology. An alleged iPhone 5S prototype was recently spotted and according to latest rumors, Apple’s next flagship smartphone is expected to be released this summer, while its production begins this quarter.

With The Game D, Techdy Hopes To Fund And Build An Open-Source Game Controller Case For iPad Mini

webdesign1-1

The iPad mini is a unique device in that it offers much more portability than the standard iPad, while still providing a much bigger screen than the iPhone for more enjoyable gaming. Techdy has recognized that as an opportunity to build a game controller specifically for Apple’s smaller tablet, which aims to turn it into a much more capable gaming rig.

The Game D is a controller designed with a standard physical d-pad and four-button arrangement, as well as start/select buttons. The controller is designed to fit inside a slim aluminum shell, not unlike Logitech’s Ultraslim Keyboard for iPad mini, and it also uses magnets to operate. It can be used in two gaming positions, either with the iPad mini mounted in a slot on the keyboard itself, or snapped magnetically to the back of the iPad, for a more traditional gaming layout. Plus, it doubles as a smart cover.

Techdy is looking to crowdfund the development of the Game D, with its own self-run campaign. Reservations for the Game D start at $39, and there’s a Pro version upgrade available for $59 that adds backlit keys, vibration feedback and two analog gamepads. There’s also a Nexus 7-specific model available for Android gamers.

A lot of aspects of the Game D’s eventual design and branding are still up to backers, including its final shipping product name (“Game D” is just a placeholder) and custom color choices, as well as app interfaces for controlling the hardware itself. The development for the Game D is progressing nicely, with a working hardware prototype designed to function with iCade-compatible games, according to co-founder Cyril Chang. He also says that they’ll eventually offer their own open-source game developer kit (GDK), as well as continue to support iCade games at launch.

I’d love a gamepad for my iPad mini, even if it might be a little more taxing on the forearms and biceps than using an iPhone. Techdy hopes to ship these in August of 2013, if it meets its $500,000 target funding goal by the middle of May.

USPTO rescinds original objections to iPad mini trademark

Last Sunday, we discovered that the United States Patent and Trademark Office denied Apple its request for an iPad mini trademark. The main reason for doing so was because the examiner believed the term “mini” to be “merely descriptive” of Apple’s iPad, and did not warrant a trademark. In order for Apple to receive its trademark, we believed that it would have had to appeal the decision with some necessary amendments, but now it seems like it didn’t need to do much at all.

Apple gets denied its iPad Mini tablet

Now a newly, updated Office action has been discovered by MacRumors that shows that the USPTO has decided to rescind its earlier objections. The two original objections that the examiner had an issue with have seemed to be resolved. They were the “merely descriptive” aspect of the “mini” trademark as well as Apple using the iPad mini’s product webpage as the image in its proposal. The new office action states:

This Office action supersedes any previous Office action issued in connection with this application.

Upon further review of the application, the examining attorney has determined that the following refusals issued in the initial Office action should be withdrawn. The examining attorney apologizes for any inconvenience caused.

REFUSALS WITHDRAWN:

The Trademark Act Section 2(e)(1) descriptiveness refusal and the Sections 1 and 45 specimen refusal are both withdrawn.

However, this doesn’t mean that Apple is guaranteed its iPad mini trademark. The USPTO states that it still needs to double-check to see if any other companies have filed for the “mini” trademark with their own products. It also wants Apple to amend its application to include a disclaimer that states that the “mini” trademark can only be applied when used in conjunction with the “iPad mini”.

The disclaimer is to protect any companies who want to use the “mini” for their future products. An example being Samsung and its Samsung Galaxy S III Mini, or its rumored Samsung GALAXY S 4 Mini. We’ll keep you posted if there are any new updates to this trademark issue. Until then, be sure to check out our review of Apple’s iPad mini, as well as our timeline below for more Apple related news.
