The Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Case For iPad Mini Successfully Balances Size And Performance

logitech-ultrathin-mini-8

Logitech had a definite winner on its hands with the Ultrathin Keyboard Case for iPad, a Bluetooth keyboard that attaches via magnets built into the iPad, protecting the screen and adding only minimal thickness. Now, there’s a successor designed for the iPad mini that comes in an appropriately shrunken down package. Of course, making a keyboard smaller doesn’t always produce the best results, but in this case, Logitech strikes a good balance.

  • MSRP: $79
  • Three months of battery life (based on two hours daily usage)
  • Availability: Preorder now, with availability sometime later this month
  • 7.33mm thin, weighs 220 grams
  • Available in black and white (and red in select markets)

The Logitech Ultrathin is a good-looking device that matches up really well with the iPad mini’s design. My review unit is black, and the case’s matte finish pretty much perfectly mirrors that of the iPad’s rear case. Side-by-side and face down, the symmetry is such that you could easily pick up one thinking it was the other if you aren’t paying close enough attention. The two surfaces also feel the same, which speaks volumes about Logitech’s attention to quality with the Ultrathin’s construction.

The magnet spine that attaches to the iPad itself snaps into place with a satisfying click, and lines up well when closed. The face of the keyboard features a shiny black plastic, which, while not as classy as the iPad’s glass surface, does a good job of mimicking its black bezel visually, to keep the whole design symmetry experience consistent.

The Ultrathin’s keyboard is the part upon which everything hinges, and Logitech has pulled out all the stops to try to provide a typing experience that doesn’t feel compromised, despite the extremely limited real estate available given the iPad mini’s small footprint. To make it work, Logitech has combined a number of function buttons, reduced key size and cut down on the space between them.

The keys themselves feel great, and offer a nice response when typing despite how thin the cover is. But the experience isn’t without compromises. Typing on the keyboard will prove a frustrating experience at first for anyone used to using a full-sized keyboard. But the good news is that the number of errors you make starts to taper off pretty quickly, and in very little time, you can even feel mostly at home on the Ultrathin keyboard, though placement of some elements like the Shift keys never quite feels perfectly natural.

While the typing experience isn’t perfect on the Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard, it’s about as close as you can get without adding a lot more bulk to a Bluetooth keyboard for the iPad mini. It still dramatically increases your ability to enter text, and beats using the software keyboard by a very wide margin. If you’re looking for an iPad mini keyboard that maintains the smaller tablet’s considerable size advantage over its big brother and still greatly improves the experience of typing anything longer than a tweet.

iPad 5 Compared To iPad 4, iPad Mini In Artist Rendering

iPad 5 Compared To iPad 4, iPad Mini In Artist Rendering

An artist’s rendering of the iPad 5 between the iPad 4 & iPad Mini

We’ve been hearing a number of iPad 5 rumors over the past few months, one of which suggests the iPad 5 may resemble the iPad Mini with a release expected in October. MacRumors took it upon themselves to commission an artist to render what we expect the iPad 5 to look like, based on these rumors.

As you can see in the artist’s rendering above, the iPad 5 is once again expected to resemble the iPad Mini more than previous iPad models. You can tell due to its slimmed bezel as well as its overall smaller design as the iPad 5 could be 4mm shorter and 17mm more narrow than the current iPad design. The iPad 5 is also expected to be 2mm thinner than the current model, making it exactly as thick as the iPad Mini.

If the rumors turn out to be true, we can expect quite the radical change in design over the original iPad, although it looks as though its 9.7-inch screen will stay completely intact. This will certainly keep iPad purists happy as we’re sure one of the main reasons why they haven’t jumped onto the iPad Mini bandwagon is the fact they prefer their 9.7-inch screen over the iPad Mini’s 7.9-inch screen.

Three temporarily free iOS games you NEED to download

Today there are three apps out there in iTunes land that you’re going to need to go ahead and download as fast as you can – each of them is temporarily free and each of them is excellent. The first of these three apps goes by the name Galaxy on Fire 2 HD – this is a game we’ve followed since before it was released back in 2011 – now you’ll find it on your iOS device for no cost at all (instead of $6.99). It’s a masterpiece of a space battle game in which you’re online in a massive way with people from all over the planet – literally and figuratively!

Another fabulous game that’s free for a very limited time is Megamassive. This game is normally just a buck, but here you’ll be rolling out for free with ultra-simplistic graphics and a bit of strategy in a physics-based set of environments. Here you’ll be working with liquids, solids, and gasses galore in a game that may just teach you a thing or two while you freak out over how disturbingly realistic it is. Sometimes rendered animations can speak volumes – with much wonderful fun to be had!

Then there’s one masterful pixel-filled massacre of a game by the name of Random Heroes. This game is generally going to cost you a single dollar, but here you’re running for free for a limited time with the full show: every one of your favorite off-brand pop culture heroes ready to take on the evil forces of evil from start to finish. This game has a style that’s rather like a side-scrolling pistol-holding version of Super Crate Box – another pixel-happy gun-wielding beat-down game from a completely different set of developers.

Belkin FastFit Keyboard Case For iPad Mini Offers 155 Hours Of Use For $80

Belkin FastFit Keyboard Case For iPad Mini Offers 155 Hours Of Use For $80

Hot on the heels of Logitech’s announcement yesterday of its popular Ultrathin Keyboard being made for the iPad Mini, Belkin has a bit of news of its own concerning its own keyboard case for the iPad Mini.

Belkin’s FastFit keyboard case is said to be the “lightest and thinnest” keyboard case around as it measures in at just 7mm thick, which is actually thinner than the iPad Mini itself. What helps keep its weight down is due to the anodized aircraft-grade aluminum its manufactured with. (more…)

Canalys: iPad was 1 of ever 6 PCs sold in Q4 2012

The analysis group Canalys has released a report detailing how they’ve run the numbers on the PC market for the fourth quarter of 2012, discovering that when the iPad is included in those numbers, they take 1 out of every 6 units sold. This report details PC shipments across the whole world for the fourth quarter of 2012 and makes it clear that while worldwide shipments of PCs did go up 12% year-over-year, it’s Apple’s iPad that seems to be making the most significant dent. Apple also leads the PC market in general.

ipad-ipadmini-3-14-SlashGear-ipad-mini-1-580x312

With a fourth quarter worldwide sales mark of 134 million units for PCs, it was Apple who came out on top in several ways. Apple keeps the number 1 spot in this market analysis with 27 million units and kicking back a 20% share overall – that’s the most it’s ever had, mind you. In second place was HP with 15 million PC units shipped and Lenovo with just 200k unit sales difference – both vendors work now with an 11% share of the total worldwide PC sales market.

For the first time in the top five in the history of the time Canalys has been analyzing such things, Samsung has broken into the top 5 for PC sales worldwide, edging out Dell with a 9% share – that’s 11.7 million PCs. It’s worth noting that Canalys has seen neither the launch of Windows 8 or holiday sales (in Europe and/or the USA) have a real effect on worldwide shipments of PCs.

On the other hand, Canalys notes that the “pad” segment (tablets, that is), grew 75% this Q4 2012 up to 46.2 million units. This jump combined with the rest of the year sales put the pad segment at 114.6 million units over the past four quarters. Apple specifically saw continued growth driven here in the pad category with their new iPad mini. Canalys notes that in addition to appearing to swallow up a bit of their own potential full-sized iPad sales, Apple has been cannibalizing PC sales on the whole with the iPad mini. That’s one beastly little “pad”.

Belkin introduces FastFit keyboard case for iPad mini, will cost you $79

The iPad mini keyboard cases are rolling in. We already saw Logitech’s offering yesterday, and now Belkin is trying one-up them by releasing their own variant. The company says their new FastFit keyboard case for the iPad mini is the “lightest and thinnest” product of its kind, and it sure looks that way.

34-view

The keyboard case measures in at just 7mm thick, which is thinner than the iPad mini itself. Belkin included its TruType keyboard technology, which offers tactile feedback when keys are pressed. The case is also made out of anodized aircraft-grade aluminium, which is probably why it doesn’t weigh a whole lot.

The FastFit connects to the iPad mini through Bluetooth and is able to deliver 155 hours of “active use” for all those typing demons out there. Also, just like Apple’s Smart Cover for the iPad, the FastFit has a magic magnetic sensor so that it can automatically lock and wake up your iPad mini when it’s opened and closed.

Belkin is charging $79 for its FastFit keyboard case at, which is right on par with Logitech’s offering. Belkin says that pre-orders for the keyboard case will begin soon, but no specific date was given. We have to say that we really like the look of the FastFit, and thanks to the efforts of both Logitech and Belkin, both black iPad mini owners, as well as silver owners can get matching-colored keyboards.

iOS 6.1 jailbreak sees massive numbers, Cydia usage spikes

Yesterday, the iOS 6.1 jailbreak officially released to the public, and it essentially was a scramble for millions of iOS 6 users, similar to how someone announces there’s free food in the break room, and everyone dashes in to get their share. It turns out that the release saw a huge wave of users join in on the jailbreaking fun, and even Cydia became overloaded, resulting in errors that left users without tweaks for now.

cydia

Developer pod2g posted up some traffic statistics of evasi0n.com, the website hosting the iOS 6 jailbreak, and the numbers are staggering. As of earlier today, the website has seen almost three million unique visitors, with page views exceeding 17.3 million. These figures don’t even include yesterday’s or today’s statistics, which we guarantee are even more staggering.

Screen Shot 2013-02-05 at 10.55.11 AM

Of course, after jailbreaking, users pretty much had no where to go since Cydia was slowing down due to the surge of users downloading various tweaks. Many users would get errors in the app and weren’t able to browse or download tweaks. Jay Freeman, the man behind Cydia, says that he saw a peak of 14,000 hits per second, which is definitely unfathomable.

However, it’ll only be a matter of time before order comes to chaos, so if you’re still trying to get into the Cydia store, you’ll have to be patient. Of course, no one knows exactly when things will start to settle down, but we’re guessing that within the next few days when the initial rush dies down, you’ll be able to dive in finally.

If you own an iPad mini and are interested in a keyboard sized exactly for the miniature tablet, Logitech has a new offering you might be interested in. The tablet is called the Ultrathin Keyboard mini and is up for pre-order right now for $79.99. It’s not clear when exactly the tablet will ship.

ultrathin-kb-mini

The tablet has a familiar QWERTY layout along with a number of keys to control media and other functions on the tablet. The shortcut keys built into the keyboard are for common tasks such as copy, paste, and others. The keys are large considering the keyboard size and have a chicklet design.

The keyboard is also designed to hold your iPad mini screen up at an angle for comfortable typing. Logitech also integrates powerful magnets into the top edge of the keyboard allowing it to attach securely to the iPad mini for transportation. The keyboard also has rubber feet around the edges to prevent the keys from scratching the screen of your tablet.

The keyboard is designed to automatically wake the iPad mini open the cover, and to automatically put the tablet into sleep mode when you close the cover. The keyboard connects to the tablet using Bluetooth and promises a battery life of up to three months. The keyboard is available in black, white, and red. The red version is only available in select countries.

Next Generation iPad Mini To Get 324ppi?

Next Generation iPad Mini To Get 324ppi?The Apple iPad mini’s greatest flaw, as tablet purists would point out, would be its 162ppi pixel density that clearly pales in comparison to the rest of the more modern tablets in a similar size class. Well, it goes without saying that Apple would certainly have taken note of that a long time ago, which is why there are rumors of a next-generation iPad mini that will make sure its screen will be on par with tablets of a similar today. Hmmm, that’s not saying much, is it, as Apple plays catch up in the visuals department to the better endowed Android-powered tablets, but still, as the saying goes, better late than never.

The BrightWire news agency cited a source from within one of Apple’s Taiwan based suppliers, AU Optronics, who claims that the new iPad mini’s display will carry a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536, which is four times the amount that you can find in the current Apple iPad mini, and would be on par with the fourth-generation Apple iPad.
