Apple posts new iPad mini adverts touting iPhoto and iBooks

As noted in our review, the iPad mini is simply a smaller iPad with some of its specs akin to the iPad 2. In spite of Apple’s effort in launching a smaller tablet at a cheaper price, many are still hesitant to buy one, probably because the idea of an iPad mini hasn’t fully settled in yet. In a bid to win customers, Apple has just published two new adverts today that are highlighting iBooks and iPhoto.

The ads basically shows an iPad mini and an iPad sharing one half of the frames, with the iPhoto ad (seen above) pointing out the basic editing features of the iPad mini. The iBooks ad, on the other hand, basically shows the similar functionalities of the app on the two tablets. But what’s more interesting is the caption that reads, “Introducing iPad mini. It’s every inch an iPad.” The background music, by the way, is Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer’s “Two of a Kind” classic. The second ad follows after the break.  (more…)

Apple Releases Two New iPad Mini Ads For iBooks, iPhoto

Screen Shot 2012-11-12 at 10.12.18 AM

If you haven’t seen Apple’s adorable Heart and Soul iPad mini ad, you’ve probably been living under a rock. But chances are you haven’t seen the last two ads, highlighting iPhoto and iBooks.

Interestingly enough, both ads feature the iPad mini and its big brother iPad, just like the Heart and Soul ad.

On the one hand, it makes sense that the company would want to show the difference in shape and size, emphasizing the iPad mini’s large screen packed into a tiny form factor. Plus, the team act went over quite well on stage at the unveiling, and it allows Apple to advertise two products in one ad.

On the other hand, I’d assume that many iPad owners won’t shell out a ton of money for the same thing in a smaller package. The iPad mini is aimed toward that new demographic who always believed the iPad was too big, or slightly too expensive.

The iBooks ad plays on the same “heart and soul” theme, showing books that have similar but different titles, like Moby Dick and Gone Fishing. Like the iPad and iPad mini, similar but different.

The iPhoto ad also plays on that team act, showing photos continuing from iPad to iPad mini. It’s cute, but it sort of begs the question why not build that out as an actual feature.

In any case, here are your latest iPad mini ads:

Apple Shoppers Set To Receive LTE iPads By Friday, November 16

ipad-mini-white

Some buyers of Apple’s 4th generation iPad with LTE are receiving notices (via 9t05Mac and MacRumors) that their shipments will arrive by November 16, otherwise known as this coming Friday. The latest iPad had originally been announced with an anticipated shipping date of mid-November, which would mean Apple is making good on its promises with shipping coming soon.

The ship times for Apple’s latest iPad with cellular connectivity recently jumped to 7 business days in the U.S. store, which could be an indication that those models didn’t make up the bulk of the 3 million iPad pre-orders (both mini and standard sizes) that Apple crowed about following its launch weekend of both devices. The LTE-capable iPad mini is still listed at 2 weeks anticipated shipping time in the U.S. store, but the longer lead times could just be a result of a more mature supply chain already existing for its larger sibling, which inherits a lot of similarities from its predecessor terms of components or assembly. Anticipated delivery dates for the iPad mini with LTE remain a bit further out, according to recent reports.

An earlier report also pegged the in-store selling day of the iPad mini and 4th generation iPad with LTE at November 16, at least at AT&T locations in the U.S. Apple’s non-LTE iPads and iPad mini models have been available for purchase in-store since November 2, although certain SKUs continue to remain scarce.

The 16GB Wi-Fi-only iPad mini has been the strongest seller to date, according to a recent survey by Topeka analyst Brian White of retail stock levels, with the 32 GB black version coming in second. It’ll be interesting to see if buyers continue to opt for lower capacity versions when the cellular-capable versions hit stores, and how the added value of LTE sways buying decisions.

New iPad mini adverts pit big against small

Apple has quietly rolled out a pair of new iPad mini adverts, focusing on the 7.9-inch tablet’s interplay with the full-sized iPad, and how both deliver the touch experience merely at different scales. The two new commercials look at Photos and iBooks respectively, tying the two versions together with themed photos – each iPad showing one half of the frame – and topically linked books.

Of the two, the Photos advert is probably the most eye-catching, at least at first. Apple swiftly demonstrates the basic editing features, such as rotating a picture from within the viewer, as different sections of the images are scrolled through, with Bobby Darin and Johnny Mercer’s catchy “Two of a Kind” as the soundtrack.

The iBooks advert is cleverer, though, with the different books shown on each tablet being linked in subtle ways. So, Melville’s classic Moby Dick is put alongside Gone Fishing by James H. Schmitz.

The Nokia Lumia 920T leaked today, and it seems that China Telecom may be getting the iPhone 5 before long. Six companies may be facing fines for alleged CRT price fixing, and after learning a ton about Grand Theft Auto V yesterday, a leak today gave us all new information.

There will be a new Windows 8 security update landing on November 13, and some users are already reporting issues with their Microsoft Surface touch covers. US video game sales were down 25% in October, and today Zynga revealed that it has acquired November Software, even though that purchase happened back in spring.

iPad mini LTE to ship in five business days

We’ve just finished our iPad mini review and noted that the 4G LTE version should make for a good mobility device. Apple is expected to launch the iPad mini LTE model in the following weeks, but the actual number of days could narrow down to just five days – business days that is. Some customers are saying that they are beginning to receive notification emails from Apple regarding their iPad mini WiFi + Cellular preorders. Shipments were also confirmed in an email saying that Apple is planning to ship the iPad model in the next five business days.

It also says that the delivery date and order details can be viewed by visiting apple.com/orderstatus. Few customers logged in to view the status and were able to confirm that it is shipping in 5 business days. However, a quick look at Apple’s online store will reveals that the WiFi + Cellular iPad minis are available to ship in two weeks. Apple has yet to issue an official statement regarding the availability of the device. The iPad mini WiFi + Cellular is currently selling at $459 for 16GB model and $559 for the 32GB variant. There’s also a larger 64GB model which sells for $659. It will be heading for Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. In case you missed our iPad mini review, check it out here.

A Week With the iPad Mini

The iPad is too expensive. The Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 are too cheap. That seems to be the logic behind the iPad mini, the filling of a crucial void in our tablet lives. But after spending a week with it, I’m pretty sure the mini is less Goldilocks than it is Rapunzel: beautiful, flawed, and ultimately not worth the trouble. More »

Apple faces second FaceTime lawsuit over iPhone 5 and iPad mini

Apple faces a second attack on its use of FaceTime, with web software firm VirnetX dragging the Cupertino firm back into the courtroom over video calling tech in the iPhone 5, iPad mini, and other hardware. VirnetX, which scored a $368m win against Apple earlier this week, claims the new smartphone and 7.9-inch tablet – as well as the 4th-gen iPad with Retina display, the 5th-gen iPod touch, and the latest batch of Macs – are just as guilty of infringing its networking-based patents as earlier iOS gadgets.

“Due to their release dates, these products were not included in the previous lawsuit that concluded with a Jury verdict on November 6, 2012″ VirnetX said in a statement today, explaining its double-dip legal strategy. The company is hoping for damages and injunctive relief; last time around, it sought around $700m, though the judge granted roughly half of that.

Four US patents – Nos. 6,502,135, 7,418,504, 7,921,211 and 7,490,151 – are at the heart of VirnetX’s complaint, referring to how VPN connections are established for secure point-to-point communications between devices. In general that technology is used for businesses to share files securely with remote workers, but VirnetX successfully argued that Apple uses the same, patented technology when it establishes FaceTime video calls.

Apple, unsurprisingly, argued that the smaller company is chasing cash for something that it didn’t create. “VirnetX is not entitled to money for things they did not invent” Williams, Morgan & Amerson lawyer Danny Williams said as part of his final closing statement at the last trial. “The VirnetX technology, if used, is a small part of very large, complex products.”

No trial date for the new case has been confirmed, and Apple is yet to comment on the extended allegations.

iPad mini LTE ships in five days Apple confirms

Apple has begun notifying iPad mini WiFi + Cellular preorder customers that their LTE tablet is preparing for shipment, with the first models set to wing out to US buyers in five days. The ship estimate was confirmed in an email to US shoppers this morning, though no specific delivery dates were given; instead, Apple said that it would follow up with a tracking number – and such specifics – in a subsequent message.

Apple had been coy with specific availability details at the iPad mini’s launch, putting the smaller iOS tablet up for preorder with a vague “mid-November” promise for shipping. Subsequent indications pointed to November 21  being the first date customers could expect to see their tablets, but Apple then removed those estimates.

Currently, Apple’s online store is still listing a two week shipping estimate for both the WiFi-only and WiFi + Cellular versions of the iPad mini. Outside of the US, the wait is likely to be a little longer; in the UK, for instance, the Apple Store lists “late November” for the 4G-enabled mini, while the WiFi model is at two weeks.

The iPad mini WiFi + Cellular is priced from $459 for the 16GB model, with different versions for three carriers in the US. The AT&T and Verizon models support LTE connectivity, though not necessarily when roaming outside of the US.

Still on the fence about the iPad mini? Check out our full review to get you up to speed on the 7.9-inch tablet.

Will It Blend? iPad mini, Kindle Fire HD and Nexus 7 get put through the blender

If you enjoyed the previous “Will It Blend” video of the iPhone 5 versus the Samsung Galaxy S3, the folks at Blendtec are back and this time they have pitted the iPad mini against Amazon’s Kindle Fire HD, and Google’s Nexus 7 (made by ASUS). Now as fascinating as it might be to see gadgets senselessly destroyed, we can’t help but think it’s a waste of money but hey, to each their own right? In any case it’s hard to tell which tablet fared better as each device was basically cracked in half before being stuffed into the blender, so the position they were sitting in the blender could have affected the results, but if you’re so inclined, check it out in the video above and let us know which tablet you think survived longer, but be warned, if you’re a tech fan then this can be rather cringe-worthy!
