iPad mini release date and details splatter

If you’re following along with the iPad mini and its imminent release, there are a collection of details you can readily assume to be true – even without Apple revealing the release date, the models, and the specifications in each device. This release will be primarily a filing of a market hole: where there’s no tablet in the market other than the iPad to placate the masses addicted to the idea that Apple’s solution is best, there will soon be two – or three, depending on how you look at the situation. If you want an iPad that costs less than $399 and you want it soon, you’ll only have to wait until November 2nd – if several sources saying the same thing are accurate.

With rumors abound that 24 models of new iPad-like devices have appeared in the Apple SKU listing in the sky, it would seem that there are two kinds of iPad mini on the way. You’ve got two different color combinations (black and white) up front, three different internal storage capacities (16GB, 32GB, and 64GB), and the option to have wi-fi-only or a mobile data connection. There being four different distinct code combinations (P101, 3, 5, or 7), we might be seeing four different color combinations instead of just two.

So that’s black, white, red, and green, six iPad minis in each category, three for wi-fi, three for mobile-data-equipped, with each of the three being 16, 32, or 64GB capacities. How does that sound to you? Another possibility is a fourth internal capacity size: 8GB.

With the iPad mini appearing to be looming with an October 23rd event date now on the books, it’s not out of the question that each of these units could be coming out on the 2nd of November. With a tablet made with the specifications that’ve been tipped many times over, we can assume we’ll have a device with a 7.85-inch display, a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels and the same ratio as each iPad on the market today, and a bezel that’s significantly smaller than the current model.

These devices will appear larger than the Amazon Kindle Fire HD (the 7-inch version, at least), and will be larger than the Google Nexus 7 as well. With a price point somewhere between $200 and $300 based on estimations done with component costs, we’ll likely be seeing a competitor for the 7-inch tablet market that doesn’t beat their cost, but certainly does beat their desirability for the Apple-loyal fans in the world today. Expect a device that’s not going to rock the tablet world to its knees like the original iPad did, but one that fills the gap for Apple users who want to work with a slightly smaller device on a regular basis.

You’ll get the full lowdown when we hit up the main event on the 23rd – expect live updates from us right here on SlashGear from morning until night – you shall know all!

Is This the iPad Mini’s Display? [Ipad Mini]

The iPad Mini is coming next week, and there’s a lot we think we already know about this dwarf. The parts keep piling up, and now we have the device’s rumored display to add to the heap. More »

iPad mini to release on November 2 claims retailer

Apple‘s upcoming event on October 23 could be the moment where we’ll finally see the iPad mini become official. It’s less than a week away, and if the latest rumors are true, we could have the device in our hands in as little as two weeks or so. According to a source close to a major UK retailer, the iPad mini will release on November 2.

It seems that the source has a reputable track record for information relating to rumored Apple products, since it also leaked the release date of the iPhone 5 last month (September 22) and got it right, which means that November 2 may actually be the day when we’ll see the iPad mini hit Apple store shelves.

On launch day, it’s said the iPad mini will be available on the US and the UK, as well as possibly a small handful of other countries. The device will also be available for pre-order during the same week that it’s announced. The source says its not 100% sure about the exact pre-order date, but October 26 seems to be a viable option.

The iPad mini is said to have a 7.85-inch screen with a 4:3 aspect ratio. There will also probably be several different models to choose from with different capacities that could up to 64GB. An entry-level iPad mini is said to cost just $250, with higher-tier models costing as much as $800.

iPad mini 4:3 display unit leaks

We’re under a week away from Apple’s next big event on October 23, where the company could be announcing the iPad mini, as well as possibly a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro and new Mac minis. In the meantime, ETrade Supply has posted some photos that show what is said to be the iPad mini’s display unit that has the same 4:3 aspect ratio as the 10-inch iPad.

The display unit in question measures approximately 6.4 inches (162 mm) x 4.9 inches (124 mm), which, according to the Pythagorean theorem, goes right along with the well-rumored 7.85-inch screen size of the iPad mini if you take the bezel of the display unit itself into account — the math has it coming out to just over 8 inches in diagonal length.

Text on the back of the display unit mentions that the item was manufactured by LG, and text on the ribbon cable is said to be consistent with the labeling that’s normally found on genuine parts used in Apple products. A French source also posted photos showing what looks to be the iPad mini’s display in quality testing. However, they weren’t able to verify, but the display looks very similar to the one that ETrade Supply posted.

Both sources also had photos of the iPad mini’s battery, which don’t give us a lot of info and aren’t too revealing anyway — it’s just a battery after all. However, sources say the battery will be rated at 16.7Whr running at 3.72V. To compare, the iPhone 5 has a 5.45Whr, so the iPad mini’s battery is more than three times larger.

Apple sends out invitations to 23rd of October iPad mini event

There were rumors that suggested that Apple will unveil the iPad mini at an event on the 23rd of October. Well it seems like those rumors have panned out as according to Joanna Stern at ABC News, Apple has sent out the invites to the event already (pictured above). As you can see, the tag line reads “We’ve got a little more to show you”, and as many have speculated, the key word in that tag line is “little” which we assume that it refers to the iPad mini. Apart from the rumored iPad mini, Apple is also expected to introduce other new products, which may or may not include a 13” Retina MacBook Pro, a refreshed and redesigned iMac, and an updated Mac Mini with Intel Ivy Bridge processors. In any case we guess all will be revealed next week, so check back with us then for the updates! In the meantime you can read our iPad mini rumor roundup for an idea of what you can expect.

Apple event invites lead to stock jump

In case you missed it, Apple started sending out invites to a press event on October 23 today. The company isn’t talking about what it will reveal during the event, but we have a pretty good idea – there’s a good chance that Apple will finally announce the long-rumored iPad Mini. It seems that investors are seeing this as a good sign, as Apple’s stock was on the rise after news of those invites hit.

This is, of course, good news for Apple, as the company’s stock has taken a hit since the release of the iPhone 5 late last month. The Los Angeles Times reports that Apple’s stock has tumbled 10% since the iPhone 5 launched, mainly because of stock shortages that are preventing the company from keeping up with demand. Concern over working conditions at Foxconn factories in China also appear to have something to do with the stock decline, and indeed, Foxconn certainly has been getting a lot of negative press lately.

But today, Apple’s stock appears to be on the rebound, climbing $15.03 to end the day at $649.79 per share. That’s a 2.37% gain for the day, though it is worth pointing out that Apple’s stock has slipped ever so slightly in after hours trading, coming down 0.18%, or $1.18. Still, any day when gains are made is a good day, and you can bet that Apple is hoping this upward trend continues as we head toward October 23.

The iPad Mini should align Apple to directly compete with the extremely popular Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, provided the rumors we’ve been hearing are true. If Apple hits the nail on the head with the iPad Mini, then you can bet investors will reward the company with another surge in stock price. Apple better be careful though, because if the supply of iPad Minis can’t keep up with consumer demand, it may find itself in a similar situation once again.

iPad mini part numbers reveal 24 different models

Today, we got word that Apple is officially holding an event on October 23, which is most likely when the company will announce the heavily-rumored iPad mini, and possibly a 13-inch Retina-equipped MacBook Pro and new Mac minis. However, the main event is the iPad mini, and it turns out that there might be 24 different models of the new device when it releases.

First off, 24 different models doesn’t means that Apple will offer 24 different configurations of the iPad mini. It means that there will probably be two, three, or even four versions that may come in both WiFi and WiFi+3G variants. Then, each version will have colors to choose from. This will roughly end up to around 24 different models.

The part numbers themselves are quite interesting. You’ll see numbers P101, P103, P105, and P107 in the list. These numbers may correspond to the different capacities of the iPad mini, which would probably be 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. Then again, they could correspond to the different connectivity options.

Each “P” number also has three different designations called “GOOD”, “BETTER”, and “BEST”. Again, this may refer to capacity size with 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB being likely capacities, or they may correspond to connectivity with there possibly being multiple WiFi+3G models for different cellular networks.

Then, there is either an “A” or “B” next to each model. It’s said this may have something to do with color options with either black or white to choose from. In the end, we’re not sure exactly what the letters, numbers, and words represent, but come next week, we’ll certainly know for sure. Stay tuned!

Apple to have two dozen iPad models soon (iPad mini included)

It is rather interesting to note that Apple tends to keep their offerings to the masses to a bare minimum, but it seems that things might just take a swing in the other direction with word that Apple might unveil not ten, nor twenty, but 24 new iPad models – although it is widely expected that the new iPad mini will be part of the two dozen, at least this is what 9To5Mac reported. 24 new SKUs for the iPad alongside a quartet of different model numbers: P101, P103, P105, and P107, were posted, and descriptions for each of these SKUs include A or B for black or white, in addition to “good,” “better,” or “best” descriptions that will in all probability refer to the amount of storage that the new iPads hold.

This would mean there are 6 more SKUs compared to the current iPad’s entire lineup, as one will need to take into consideration the different kinds of storage capacity, color, Wi-Fi connectivity and cellular combination. Guess the new half dozen to debut would include the new iPad mini, right? Image courtesy of 9to5Mac.

iPad mini Apple event invites released: October 23rd it is

Today it’s time to get busy packing for the next big Apple event, set for October 23rd and quite likely to reveal no larger an iPad than a mini. With the iPad mini on peoples’ lips and in their dreams now for several months (or years, for some), it comes as no surprise that the device will be revealed just in time for the holiday season. Now we’ve just got to hypothesize on how many other devices – or device refreshes – will be appearing as well.

This event will likely center around an update to the whole Apple range, with the iPad mini coming with a Lightning connector and a refreshed iPad coming with Lightning as well. There have been several other rumors surrounding this event including a new 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro that’s essentially the same as the one released earlier this year – but smaller. It’s not that Apple wants to get tiny here in the Autumn of 2012, but they’re certainly not going to let the competition swipe their legs out from under them.

Apple has over the past year concentrated on becoming thinner and sharper, with the iPhone 5 becoming taller yet smaller and the Retina MacBook Pro getting smaller as it gets much higher definition in its display. This event will steal some fire away from Microsoft simply based on its timing as well with the release of Windows 8 set for the 26th of this month.

Have a peek at the timeline below to track what we’ve heard and been tipped on for the iPad mini over the past few weeks, and stay tuned for the final event as well. We’ll be on-site with all the coverage you could possible want from start to finish right here on SlashGear!
