iPad Mini connector cable spotted?

Sure, there was a dud in the iPad Mini display image that was leaked earlier today, but what you see above came from the very same people who brought you the Galaxy Note 2 bezel, so I would say that the above image has a very high probability of depicting the actual iPad Mini connector cable – what do you think? This could very well be the very first component of the new iPad Mini that is pictured and shared with the rest of the world, where it is noticeably smaller compared to the current connector which works with most of all the mobile devices from Apple. iPad Mini display rumor could be Kindle Fire instead

What you see above was originally making its rounds throughout the Internet as some form of an iPad Mini display. Needless to say, we took it with a rather large grain of salt (and for good reason, too), since you know how close to the chest Apple plays their cards. Well, the alleged iPad Mini display turned out to be rather close to that of the Amazon Kindle Fire, so I think the above is most probably a case of mistaken identity, all 7.85″ of it. It would be interesting to see if the iPad Mini is a true device, and will share a similar screen ratio as that of the Amazon Kindle Fire.

Is there a real huge market for a smaller display in terms of the tablet market? Perhaps, especially when you see Google make their way into the 7″ tablet market with the recently announced Google Nexus 7 which was manufactured by Asus. I guess Apple wants their share of the cake as well, but only time will tell just how serious Apple’s efforts would turn out to be like.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 15, 2012

The week is halfway over folks – just two more work days to go and the weekend is here again. Today brought a wealth of Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 stories, with the company officially unveiling it for the US today. We were right there with a review of it, and we also compared Samsung’s new flagship tablet to the 3rd generation iPad, just in case you were curious as to how the Galaxy Note 10.1 stands up. A little bit later in the day, Samsung announced the price of Galaxy Note 10.1 and also revealed some accessories, so if you’re planning to pick one up, be sure to check that out.

Speaking of Samsung devices, we may have received our first glimpse at the front panel of the Samsung Galaxy Note II today, and a video of the Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Galaxy S III surfaced today as well. Looking at Samsung’s current court battle with Apple for a moment, Samsung delivered the argument many on its side were waiting for, saying that the iPhone’s design is “obvious.” HTC rallied employees today by saying that it’s coming back, Amazon might have a new Kindle Fire in the works, and we were treated to a mock up of what the rumored iPad Mini might look like if it, you know… existed.

Verizon will begin offering an LTE-enabled version of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 later this week, and a new SwiftKey update brings Google Voice recognition with it. Facebook is in trouble with data protection officials in Germany again, a reported iPad Mini dock connector surfaced today, and we happened upon some specs for the Motorola RAZR HD. Anonymous claimed today that it had hacked the PlayStation Network, but Sony was right there to say that it was all a hoax. Microsoft detailed the problems it’s currently having with the Windows Phone marketplace, and Pinterest revealed new apps for both Android and iOS, and if you’re planning to pick up, be sure to have a look at our review first.

LG announced that it has sold 5 million smartphones worldwide, and Netflix is about to roll out to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Finland. Nokia has reiterated its commitment to Windows Phone, and the Windows 8 RTM software build is now available. Finally tonight, the Waverider hypersonic aircraft has crashed during an Air Force test flight, and the Humble Indie Bundle for Android 3 is now available, so if you’re in need of some games, be sure to check that out!

That does it for the evening wrap-up everyone, so go and enjoy what’s left of Wednesday!

Leaked photo allegedly shows iPad Mini's dock connector flex cable with headphone jack on bottom

Granted, the existence of a 7-inch iPad mini is far from confirmed, but the latest “evidence” to fan those rumor flames is a photo of what appears to be a dock connector flex cable that connects the smaller dock connector, headphone jack and home button connector. The photo appeared on the site Nowhereelse.fr, which also recently published photos that purportedly show the next-gen iPhone’s tiny docking connector. Other reports have indicated that the iPad mini’s headphone jack will be located on the top of the device (as it is on the current version of the tablet) as opposed to on the bottom, which would contradict this latest leaked photo, but this new layout corresponds to rumors about the iPhone 5. The one semblance of certainty in all this? iFixit‘s Kyle Wiens weighed in to say that the component “is consistent” with Apple parts.

Is This the iPad Mini’s Tiny New Screen? (Update: Probably Not) [Ipad Mini]

A tipster with strong business ties to China just sent us this image—allegedly the display of the (rumored) iPad Mini. If it’s real, this is the very face of Apple’s newest mystery gadget. Update: Looks suspiciously like a Kindle Fire. More »

iPad Mini dock connector leaks with odd port

It appears that the next-generation so-called iPad mini may have had a part leak out this afternoon with no less than a new mini dock connector attached to it. This part has been shared with NWE and “examined” by iFixit, both parties suggesting that it does indeed appear to be an official Apple device component for an unknown future tablet-sized device. What’s strange about this part, however, is that it’s got 10 pins in its dock rather than 8 or 16.

Rumors and tips thus far about the next generation of Apple mobile devices have been clear about a dock connector that will be smaller than the 30-pin component we’ve been using thus far. The reason for this is that several of the pins are no longer in service and new and more advanced technology has taken over since the 30-pin model was introduced. This new dock connector has been tipped as having 8, 9, or 16 pins instead of 30.

This supposed iPad mini component also has a headphone jack and home button connector both quite near the dock connector, this leading us to believe that this is, indeed, an iPad component – or at least an Apple mobile device. This also falls in line with the suggested configuration for the next-generation iPhone with the headphone jack at the bottom of the device.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see more iPad mini posts with tips and leaks galore included – fun stuff for all! Also you might be safe expecting this device to appear soon – September 12th is possible!

iPad mini design detailed

Several reports have indicated that Apple is working on a smaller version of the iPad, said to be around 7.85-inches, but there haven’t been anywhere near as many leaks as there have been for the next iPhone. 9to5Mac believes it has solid information regarding the design of the iPad mini, however, suggesting that it will look like an enlarged iPod touch, with smaller bezels compared to the current iPads.

[Above mockup by 9to5Mac, showing the potential iPad mini design.]

9to5Mac suggests that this may make the tablet easier to hold due to the reduced size, with users gripping the tablet from the back rather than grabbing on to the bezels. Some of the buttons on the iPad mini will also be tweaked, with the volume rocker featuring seperate physical buttons rather than a combined rocker. A microphone will also be added to the back of the device for noise cancellation.

The thinner bezel is also alluded to in alleged schematics for the iPad mini, first spotted back in July. The schematics corroborate reports of the thinner bezel and tweaked buttons that have come from multiple sources, and also point to a much thinner design for the device compared to the current generation iPad. The smaller dock connector that has been rumored for the next iPhone, along with all iOS products going forward, is also seen in the drawings.

John Gruber at Daring Fireball has backed up some of these claims in addition to iMore, suggesting that the bezels will indeed be noticeably reduced, with Apple possibly aiming for a much thinner device compared to the current iPad. The company had to increase thickness slightly over the iPad 2 in order to accommodate the Retina display and larger batteries, but won’t necessarily have to make those concessions for the iPad mini, allowing for a thinner device.

Rumor: The 7-inch iPad Mini Will Have a Super Thin Bezel and Look More Like an iPhone Than an iPad [Apple]

9to5Mac and Daring Fireball are both connecting the dots in the Apple rumor trail and reporting that the rumored 7.85-inch iPad mini would look more like a bigger iPhone than it would a smaller iPad. Which means, instead of having a uniformly thick bezel around the edge of the display, it would have a much thinner bezel on the left and right side. More »

New iPhone mini dock connector appears in iOS 6 beta

We’ve been hearing that the next iPhone will be getting a smaller dock connector for quite some time now, though its reported size ranges from anywhere to 19-pins all the way down to 8. We’ve got another one to toss into the mix today, as 9to5Mac speculates that the new iPhone could be getting a 9-pin dock connector. Apparently a reference to such a connector lies hidden in the iOS 6 beta.

To get a little more specific, a reference to “9Pin” was discovered in a section of the OS that details the hardware found on iOS devices. Since the section isn’t specifically about the new iPhone and instead about the broader range of iOS devices, it seems possible that this 9-pin connector could become a feature on future iPads as well (iPad Mini anyone?).

True, it isn’t that much to work with, but it does seem to add up. Given the massive amount of speculation, it seems almost certain that Apple will be implementing a new, smaller dock connector soon, and this reference to “9Pin” in the iOS 6 beta may have just given away the company’s plans. Of course, we won’t know for sure until makes the announcement, so until that happens, it’s probably best to stay on the skeptical side of things.

As for when that announcement will actually happen, Apple is expected to hold an event on September 12. It’s there that many think Apple will unveil a handful of new devices, including the iPad Mini and the new iPhone. There could even be more device reveals beyond those two, so if Apple is planning to implement a new dock connector, we’ll probably hear about there. Keep it tuned to SlashGear for more information, and be sure to check out our story timeline below for details about Apple’s rumored dock connector switch.
