iPad Mini is coming, says New York Times

The Nexus 7 launch and various iPad Mini rumors means it’s hard not to wonder if Apple is poised to enter the small tablet market, and now a new report from The New York Times indicates that may be the case. The publication corroborates an earlier report by The Wall Street Journal, saying that Cupertino is indeed working on a 7.85-inch iPad that will sell for “significantly less” than the current $499 iPad. The New York Times goes on to say that a smaller iPad would allow Apple to cater to consumers demands for different screen sizes.

Comparisons are drawn between Apple’s various iPods, with analysts saying that a smaller device would be a “sweet spot”, allowing for better portability. It would also be a response to tablets such as the Nexus 7, which offer good specs and comparable features for a much lower price. The New York Times does note that Steve Jobs famously dismissed the idea of a smaller tablet, although he was known to have sudden changes in opinion.

Current rumors suggest that the iPad Mini would feature a 7.85-inch screen. The design is said to take cues from the current iPod Touch, and the device will feature WiFi and LTE connectivity like the current iPad. It’s not clear what resolution the screen will have, however, with some reports suggesting a Retina display while others indicate the tablet may stick with 1024×768. The iPad Mini is expected to debut before the end of the year, and is said to cost around $299.

The Rumored iPad Mini’s Size Compared to the iPad, Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire [Tablets]

The whispers and smoke and noise about the rumored iPad mini—an iPad that would be 7.85-inches in screen size—are definitely getting louder. It’s by no means real yet, but the iPad mini could very well be an actual thing. But what would it look like? Tweeter TrojanKitten points out that unlike the twinsies nature of the Nexus 7 and Kindle Fire, the iPad mini would house a different form factor from its 7-inch contemporaries, with a different sized screen. iPad Mini to be made in Brazil?

iPad MiniThe past few weeks have been rife with “iPad Mini” rumors and it looks like this week won’t be any different. According to reports online, we’ve got more rumors about the tablet – while the iPad Mini will be manufactured by Foxconn, it won’t be done in China. Apparently the tablet will be assembled in Foxconn’s factories in Brazil, where certain iPhone and iPad models are currently in production. No word on whether it will have any effect on the price of the tablet (not that we know how much it’s going to cost at the moment anyway).

The iPad Mini is said to feature a 7.85″ display and will be as tall as the Google Nexus 7, but wider due to its 4:3 display aspect ratio. The tablet is also said to be as thin as the iPod Touch which is only 7.2mm thick. The design of the tablet is also supposed to be similar to the 3rd generation iPod Nano. The iPad Mini is also rumored to be released in September and will cost around $300. If these rumors pan out, it looks like the 7″ tablet competition is going to be fiercer this year.

iPad Mini to use same display technology as the iPhone 3GS?

Another day, another speculation about the iPad Mini – this time it comes from Daring Fireball’s John Gruber. According to him, if Apple creates the 7.85″ iPad, it will be using the same low-resolution display technology as the iPhone 3GS. His theory is that because Apple would be able to produce large quantities of the smaller iPad efficiently if they do so. While it doesn’t give us a whole lot of additional insight into the rumored iPad Mini, it does make sense – to some extent.  1024×768 display would technically be feasible too… A company that creates tablets that sell like hot cakes is bound to look for ways to speed up the manufacturing process and to cut costs.

Rumors about the smaller iPad have been surfacing again recently with analysts predicting an October announcement for the device. We know that Steve Jobs has criticized 7″ tablets in the past, so it seems unlikely that we’ll be seeing one in the future – but ideas change over time, and there’s a chance we’ll be seeing this “iPad Mini” hit the markets. Stay tuned and we’ll keep you posted on any developments.

iPad mini rumors resurface like so many leftovers, have production start in September

There have been rumors of a shrunken iPad since time immemorial, so you’ll have to forgive us if we look at most fresh claims with a jaded eye. Still, when both Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal hear that Apple is close to producing a tablet with an 8-inch or smaller screen, there might be some fire to go with the smoke. What details that exist are unsurprisingly thin outside of the dimensions, although Bloomberg understands that there won’t be a Retina display like in the current 9.7-inch slab. That’s not a shock given the size and likely cost concerns — we’re more interested in the talk of nearing production plans with an uncanny level of synchronicity. The Wall Street Journal has caught murmurs that volume production ramps up in September, while its business paper rival Bloomberg thinks that an announcement could come “by October.” We still won’t be shocked if these are just wild misinterpretations of an upsized iPod touch or become nothing but vapor. Should they pan out, however, our good friend the Nexus 7 could feel some heat this fall.
