Evernote Food for iOS updated with a bunch of new features

Evernote Food has been updated for iOS devices to bring in a bunch of new features to food lovers and chefs alike. The new updates will help you customize and personalize your cookbook to your own liking. If you have a recipe that you’re just dying to share with your friends and family, there are new sharing options to help you do that. And if you need to get reservations quickly at a nice restaurant, just head to the built-in OpenTable app to make them.

Evernote Food

Evernote Recipes allows seamless recipe transfers to the app from your native Evernote app. If you have a bunch of recipes saved up in Evernote notes, you can sync them to Evernote Food. You can choose how you import your recipes, whether its by tags, or by entire notebooks. Your recipes will stay organized the way you kept them in the original Evernote app, so you don’t have to worry about going through that long process again.

After you sync all of your recipes, you can easily share those recipes with any friend or family member. Just scroll on over to the recipe you want to share and send them to others via Twitter, Facebook, or email. And lastly, you can now make reservations straight from your Evernote Food app. The OpenTable system has been integrated with the app, so you can now make reservations at your favorite restaurants within minutes. Also included are FourSquare ratings, so you can see just how popular a restaurant is before you dine there.

Evernote Food is an all-around great app that combines all of the important aspects of food apps into one, single app. You can make a cookbook, have a restaurant wish list, keep track of meals you’ve cooked, and more all with Evernote’s renown organization capabilities. Unfortunately, the Evernote Food update today is limited only to iOS devices, so Android users, you’ll have to wait a little while before you can take advantage of these great features.

iOS 6.1.3 Released To Fix Passcode Security Vulnerability

iOS 6.1.3 Released To Fix Passcode Security Vulnerability

An exploit allowing anyone to easily bypass the passcode lock on an iOS device running iOS 6.1 was discovered last month, with Apple promising to fix it in an upcoming iOS release.  The iOS 6.1.3 beta introduced a fix for the passcode security exploit, and today, iOS 6.1.3 is out of beta and is now available for you passcode lock-using iOS owners who would rather not allow anyone access to your device.

iOS 6.1.3 only weighs in at 18.2MB, meaning you could get away with downloading it without needing a Wi-Fi network, although if you’re one of the over 14 million iOS users who have jailbroken their their device with evasi0n, you might want to rethink about updating to iOS 6.1.3 as a member of Evad3rs has said the update might break the jailbreak. We don’t know about you, but we would much rather keep our iOS devices jailbroken than running to an update that fixes a rather small security hole. We would rather get the all-clear sign from Evad3rs.

The iOS 6.1.3 update should now be available to all iOS devices. So if you don’t jailbreak your iOS device, then get cracking and start feeling more secure immediately!

Apple releases iOS 6.1.3 with lock screen fix, Evasi0n patch

We’ve known that the update would be coming eventually, and it looks like today’s the day. Apple has released iOS 6.1.3 to the masses, and it fixes that stubborn lock screen vulnerability, as well as comes with a ton of map improvements in Japan. The update has begun rolling out, and you should be seeing it soon on your iDevice.

ios-6.1.3

The lock screen exploit was originally discovered last month, and it allows anyone to bypass the lock screen with a bit of clever swiping and tapping maneuvers. From there, prying eyes can look at your contact list and even your photo library, both of which could contain sensitive information. However, this latest update patches it right up.

The update also patches up some of the exploits used by the Evasi0n iOS 6 jailbreak, so if you plan on jailbreaking your iOS 6 device, may this be a warning not to update to iOS 6.1.3. However, if you’re already jailbroken, then you probably don’t have a lot to worry about, other than the fact you won’t be able to update to the latest version.

Other than that, you have some other small bugfixes and improvements that come with the update, but the lock screen fix and the map improvements in Japan are the big two. However, the Evasi0n patch is also noteworthy for those interested in tapping into their iPhones and iPads, and the dev team behind the jailbreak doesn’t have any plans to support iOS 6.1.3 anytime soon, sadly.

Penguins Play With iPad Game For Cats

We’re sure by now, you’ve seen a number of videos of a number of animals, babies and even the elderly playing with an iPad to your amazement. But we’re sure you have yet to see a video of penguins playing with an iPad, and if you have, make believe you haven’t for the sake of this story.

For you people who have yet to see penguins interacting with an iPad, a video from the Aquarium of the Pacific shows them playing a game called “iPad Game For Cats,” which we’re sure these penguins would die from embarrassment if they knew they were playing such a game.

The game is designed with felines in mind as it has a toy mouse running around the screen, which would entice any cat to come play with your iPad. As penguins would do, they don’t play with the toy mouse, instead, they try to eat it over and over again. We’re sure the penguins that played with the iPad have once again learned we humans will continually tease them with food for our own enjoyment, which is what will probably spark the great penguin uprise of 2035.

Games for Cats Hackathon Seeks Just That

Back in 2011, Purina Friskies brand cat food launched the first game for the iPad was specifically designed for cats. That particular game had little fish that swim around the screen and change direction each time a cat smacks them with a paw. Friskies is now holding a contest seeking people to develop games specifically made for cats.

The Games for Cats Hackathon is offering prizes to developers of the top three apps and the chance for the champion to have their game marketed by Purina Friskies. The contest will be held on March 23 and 24th this year in California with up to 75 game programmers working in teams of up to five to develop their own game. The Grand Prize winner will take home $15,000(USD).

The second place winner will get $3,000 and the third place winner will get $2000. Friskies has also announced another game for cats that is available to download called Happy Wings. This game has birds, moths, and dragonflies flittering across the screen for cats to whack at. Of course, your cat must own an iPad or Android tablet to take advantage of these games.

AT&T iPad hacker sentenced to 41 months in prison

Andrew Auernheimer, or better known as his internet pseudonym “weev”, has been sentence to 41 months in federal prison for obtaining the personal data of over 100,000 AT&T iPad owners on AT&T’s website. Auernheimer exploited a security flaw in AT&T’s iPad registration system that allowed him to download contact information of these iPad owners. The court case goes back a couple years ago.

Auernheimer was found guilty back in November in a federal court in New Jersey. He was found guilty on one count of identity fraud and one count of conspiracy to access a computer without authorization. Auernheimer and a colleague worked together to exploit the security flaw, both of whom will be punished and will be ordered to pay AT&T a collective $73,000 for damages.

The case has been a controversial one, and this is just one out of many highly-criticized cases of security researchers who have been charged with computer crimes thanks to the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Meanwhile, activists are calling for reform of the law to distinct between criminal hacking and simple unauthorized access, which would protect security researchers whose activities are not meant to be criminal.

Obviously, Auernheimer will appeal the court’s decision, but apparently he doesn’t regret his actions regarding the AT&T security flaw, and says (in a Reddit AmA) that he was just “being nice enough to give AT&T a chance to patch” the vulnerability before the data set got leaked, but that he “won’t be as nice next time.”

AT&T Hacker Gets 3.5 Years In Prison

Wired reports that Andrew “Weev” Auernheimer, 26, has been sentenced to 41 months in prison for exploiting an AT&T security hole three years ago. His bid to stay out of prison has failed. Instead, he’s going to get 3.5 years in the slammer. More »

Flickr Rolls Out Hashtag Support For iOS App

Flickr Rolls Out Hashtag Support For iOS App

Ever since Instagram had a falling out with its users 3 months ago, Flickr has been trying its absolute best to acquire those users, first by updating its iOS application to give it a more Instagram-like feel, then by giving away 3 months of premium service. The service is quite comparable to Instagram, although searching for a specific topic can be rather difficult. Today, Flickr will be making it easier to search through its users’ library to images now that its iOS application has hashtag support.

Hashtag support on Flickr is pretty much identical to other social networks where such tags are used: throw in a hashtag in your image’s description and people can search for that image and others like it simply by throwing in the relevant hashtag. Flickr is joining in on the hashtag fun as well by allowing its users to participate in a weekly photo challenge called #FlickrFriday. (more…)

BlackBerry CEO: iPhone is old news

BlackBerry CEO Thorsten Heins has dismissed the iPhone for slowly innovating, arguing that while BlackBerry 10 owes iOS for its groundwork on touch devices, Apple’s aging UI leaves it passé. “Apple did a fantastic job in bringing touch devices to market, they did a fantastic job with the user interface” Heins told The Australian Financial Review as the Z10 made its debut down under, but argued that “the rate of innovation is so high in our industry that if you don’t innovate … you can be replaced pretty quickly.” That’s something Apple should fear, Heins argues.

blackberry_z10_iphone_5_0

“The user interface on the iPhone, with all due respect for what this invention was all about is now five years old” he concluded. In contrast, Heins claimed, BlackBerry 10 is better at multi-tasking than Apple’s phone, .

The CEO wouldn’t be drawn on specific sales figures, pointing out that BlackBerry is in a quiet period ahead of announcing its latest financial results. However, he did re-confirm that the company is considering the potential for licensing BlackBerry 10 – assuming it could find other manufacturers sufficiently interested in using it on their own devices – but said that, right now, the focus is on the roll-out of the Z10.

Hardware we shouldn’t expect to see delivered any time soon is a tablet, though. Here, Heins gives Apple a little more credit: “Kudos to Apple, I think they really managed to own that space, so it doesn’t make sense for me to just take this head on” he conceded. “I need to figure out, for my enterprise customers, for my consumers, for my BB10 audience, what can I do that provides them a mobile computing experience in the form factor of a tablet, which goes beyond just the puristic tablet experience.”

That stance echoes comments by Nokia CEO Stephen Elop, who has repeatedly said that the Finnish firm will only wade into the tablet space once it can find a sufficiently unique angle to take with it. “I think the profit pool is very very thin,” BlackBerry’s Heins mused.

Penguins Allowed To Enjoy “Obsolete iPad”

Penguins are pretty great looking, but they offer more than just swagger. They can play iPad games and have a good time doing it. Or, you know, not really grasp what’s going on. More »
