Evad3rs member Planetbeing talks iOS 7 jailbreaking

The iOS 6 jailbreak is officially out and it’s had plenty of time to get into the hands of eager jailbreakers, specially 7 million of them. Now that the Evad3rs dev team has had some time to relax, one of the members was available to answer questions on Reddit today. Planetbeing, the hacker also behind the first jailbreak ever, discussed his thoughts on jailbreaking iOS 7.

Screen-Shot-2013-02-01-at-11.46.34-AM-580x4291

When asked if iOS 7 may possibly be harder or more easier to jailbreak than iOS 6, Planetbeing says that “it’s hard to say,” since he’s not quite sure what Apple will do, but he guesses that the next major version of iOS will be harder to jailbreak, and while the time it takes to jailbreak each major iOS version has kept rising, Planetbeing really isn’t sure how long it might take to get iOS 7 exploited.

He continues by saying that, when iOS 7 eventually comes out, the dev team will study it and see what they can do with it. He says that you “can’t really plan on” things beforehand, since it’s so difficult to know what to expect. Planetbeing says that it’s all a “specialized game with a steep learning curve.”

As far as what Planetbeing does when he’s not hacking into Apple devices, he actually works at a web analytics company for his day job, and as far as his free time, he says that “if jailbreaking is no longer possible,” he would most likely play all those Steam games he bought on sale that he never gets around to playing.

Wunderlist 2 task manager app hits the iPad

Wunderlist 2 task manager app hits the iPad

6Wunderkinder’s Wunderlist 2 has been developing something of a following among the highly organized, although there’s been a conspicuous gap when iPad owners couldn’t keep up with the to-dos and reminders they’d created on their phones. The hole is closing quickly: Wunderlist 2’s iOS version is now a universal app that supports all flavors of iPads. There won’t be any surprises in features if you had a peek at the app on an Android tablet last week, but consistency is more of a virtue than a vice when juggling tasks. Infinity Blade free for first time ever, sale ends February 21

Infinity Blade, the popular sword slinger fantasy third-person game, is now free in the iTunes App Store for the first time ever. While it may seem like a Valentine’s Day special, the app was merely just chosen by Apple as its free App of the Week, a promotion series that the company started not too long ago. The app is available for free from now until February 21.

Infinity Blade is normally priced at $5.99, so it’s definitely a good deal if you’ve ever wanted to try the game out but were never willing to shell out that much for it. It’s compatible for the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad, so any iOS user can get in on the fun and start slaying all those bad guys.

The game released in December of 2010 and acted as a flagship game of sorts for the iPhone, with Apple using it to show off the graphics of the then-just-released iPhone 4. While the game is now over two years and even has a sequel out, the original Infinity Blade is still considered an impressive specimen compared to today’s standards.

Overall, it’s one of the most popular games ever to hit the iTunes App Store. It was also the first iPhone game to use the Unreal Engine 3 technology that absolutely set the bar for graphics in mobile games. Infinity Blade has received almost 65,000 five-star ratings in the App Store, so it has no doubt seen its fair share of usage.

New Zealand Frontline Police To Receive iPhones And iPads

New Zealand Frontline Police To Receive iPhones And iPadsA few years ago, the defacto device of choice for governments and businesses would be Blackberry. However with iOS and Android controlling the majority of the market share these days, the preferences of users have changed, although it is possible that Blackberry could regain their footing with Blackberry 10. However until that happens, it seems that as far as the New Zealand police are concerned, it looks like iOS will be their software and hardware of choice. According to New Zealand’s The National Business Review, New Zealand Prime Minister John Key, and Police Minister Anne Tolley, have said that they will be distributing 6,000 iPhones to frontline police, and 3,900 of which will be given iPads as well.

The police will spend about $3.65 million rolling out this program over the next three months, and $134.7 million over the next ten years. If this seems like a lot, they have also estimated that by using these gadgets, productivity is expected to improve whose benefits are valued at $258.5 million in a ten-year span. The decision to go with iOS compared to Android or Blackberry was thanks to an 11-month trial period that involved 100 officers. Ten years seems pretty long, especially since technology is constantly shifting, upgrading and improving, so who knows, perhaps Blackberry 10 will prove to be a viable business alternative in the near future and we could see a change then as well.

The Apple Shop name change: computer giant it isn’t

Today an announcement has been made that the cider and apple-related food and goods store “The Apple Shop”, located in Norwich, England, will be changing its name after several years of calls by Apple computers users looking for technical support. And yes, today is indeed a slow news day, if you were wondering. The owner of this institution Geoff Fisher has spoken with the BBC saying that he’s making the name change after 20 years with the same name of his own accord – and he’s not mad about it. On the contrary, he’s actually been quite amused, for the most part.

appleshopfrontage

The Apple Shop has had the same name and been in the same location for the past 20 years, but after an Apple computer store opened in Norfolk in 2009, calls began to flow in to the wrong location – the juice store. According to Fisher, he’d been receiving an average of 24 calls a week since the Apple computer store moved in nearby. While most of the situation has been entertaining, he said, some callers have been rude as well.

Fisher notes The Apple Shop was opened by his brother Stephen back a couple of decades ago soon after he’d first started up the Norfolk Cider Company in 1987. As his telephone “has a Norwich prefix”, as he explains, “people unawares ring up the Apple Shop.” He’s made it clear his fair share of times with a kind “I’m very sorry, I can’t help you, but please do come along and get com proper Norfolk cider to get over your sorrows.” This comment is met with either an understanding chortle or a bit of an angry hang-up.

With too many hang-ups on the line and a bit of time lost due to too many mistaken calls each and every week, Fisher has decided to change the name of the shop. The new name of the shop will be The Norfolk Cider Shop from Easter. Fisher has made it clear that Apple has not forced him to make the change – so no worries!

Rdio for iOS updates with new design and navigation improvements

Ever since the popularity of Pandora and Spotify have gained some steam, Rdio has been quietly hiding in the corner, but the company is poised to keep going and make its users happy. Rdio’s music-streaming app for iOS updated today, which the company says makes the “Rdio experience more social and seamless no matter how you’re listening to music.”

rdio-ios

First off, Rdio introduced an all-new design for the app, which not only makes the interface look more modern and sleek, but it’s also easier to navigate. It has a simple minimalist look that makes it quick and easy to find what you need. There certainly wasn’t anything wrong with the previous user interface, but it never hurts to makes something even better.

There’s also a couple of new features that Rdio introduced as well. For starters, there’s a new “Long Press” feature, which Rdio says will make it “simpler to interact with music.” All you do is tap and hold on any piece of music, and from there, you can share it, sync it, add it to a playlist or “Collection,” or just set it to play later.

The app now also has “Badges,” which show up on the lower right corner of any album art and indicate which music you’ve either added to your Collection or synced to your mobile device. Adding music to your Collection will show up with a green badge, while tracks synced to your mobile device appear with an orange badge. The update is available now in the iTunes App Store.

Chevrolet MyLink gains Siri integration today in 2013 Sonic and Spark

Starting today, those of you with a Chevrolet Sonic or a Chevrolet Spark working with Chevrolet MyLink with your iPhone will be able to work with Siri eyes-free integration. This update takes on what was promised back in November of last year and what we got to see with our own eyes that same month in an early preview, making it real for real-world vehicle owners. With Siri integration, users will be able to connect their iPhone (any model that works with Siri natively) completely wirelessly and jump on in to Eyes Free mode.

siri

Both the Chevrolet Sonic and Spark allow their MyLink system to attach itself to your iPhone via Bluetooth. From there you’re using your steering wheel voice activation button to notify Siri you’d like to make a command. This button is a toggle switch, meaning you can press once to start a session with Siri, then press again to stop your chat.

With this connection, you’ll be able to access your phone’s calendar and make appointments on the fly, make voice calls, access your contacts, and play music. You’re able to instantly switch sources for your music between AM/FM/XM radio to iPod mode for music from your iTunes library. All of this is done while the display of your phone is kept in sleep mode automatically so you’re not distracted by it constantly flickering on and off when you chat – makes sense!

For those of you that own a 2013 Chevrolet Spark or a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic already, you’ll be able to upgrade your MyLink radio for Siri integration starting in March. All vehicle purchases made after this point will have the upgrade right out of the box. If you’d like to connect to MyLink with your iPad, you can do so, but you do need an internet connection if you’d like to use Siri – keep that in mind!

Apple Maps Blamed for Poor Bushfire Response in Australia

Apple Maps Blamed for Poor Bushfire Response in Australia

This is were the fire are… maybe.

The Country Fire Authority of Victoria (CFA), Australia, is blaming Apple Maps inaccurate mapping issues in its FireReady app. Officials are stuck with using Apple Maps for FireReady on iPhones and iPads. A large number of towns including Macedon are located incorrectly, due to inaccuracies in the app. This makes the job of finding the exact location of bushfires very difficult.

To shed some context, there is a Google Maps, but iPhone/iPad Apps that query iOS for geographical location have to use Apple Maps. The alternative may be to use the Google Maps API over the web, but that would require substantial changes in the app. (more…)
