evasi0n iOS 6.x jailbreak announced, tentatively planned for next week

The iOS 6.x jailbreak – dubbed evasi0n – has been announced, and according to a tweet from @planetbeing, one of the hackers working on it, is tentatively scheduled for release next week. The tweet advises that the jailbreak could come out earlier than that, or it could come out later. According to the official website that is now live, the jailbreak’s GUI is being finalized.

evasi0n jailbreak

Per the official website, a Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux version of the jailbreak will be available. Mac OS X must be at least version 10.5, while Windows need to be at least XP. It will be compatible with all iPad/iPad mini, iPod Touch, and iPhone models that are running iOS 6.0 to iOS 6.1. The entire jailbreaking process is said to take about 5 minutes, and the only requirement – aside from the OS – is a USB data cable.

Once the GUI is completed, the next step will be moving the jailbreaking software into a private beta, where it will be tested for issues. This is the result of the collective evad3rs, which is composed of hackers known by the handles pod2g, pimskeks, planetbeing, and musclenerd. They have a Twitter account up now under @evad3rs.

Others who have worked on the project or otherwise have had involvement includes @chronicdevteam and @iphone_dev, which are thanked on the website for providing support, @Surenix who created designs for both evasi0n and evad3rs, and @phoenixdev for providing research. Little else is known at the moment. We’ll be keeping an eye on this and will let you know when it goes live.

Apple Store design and layout granted official US trademark

If you were planning on opening a store selling your brand new computer brand with a setup that’s not unlike the Apple Store, you’ll probably want to re-think your strategy starting this week. Apple has officially been granted a trademark protecting their retail store design and layout by the US Patent & Trademark Office this week. The original trademark request application was made all the way back in May of 2010, so whatever you remember about the store design back then that’s survived until now you’ll want to avoid when knocking out your own store in the future.

newipad_2012_applestore_mallofamerica_0018

This fully granted trademark listing includes items such as “oblong table and stools [that are] set below video screens flush mounted on the back wall.” That’s essentially describing the sections many Apple Stores had where people were invited to classes on what their Apple product was capable of and what they could do with it in the future. You won’t see that feature in too many Apple Stores these days as the back is mostly reserved for the Genius Bar or sales counters (where applicable.)

trademarks

Another feature listed in the trademark is “a clear glass storefront surrounded by a panelled facade.” This joins several other patents and trademarks surrounding the stores interiors that’ve been granted in the past, one of which is a design patent for a floating glass staircase granted back in 2003. You can find the full trademark listing at the USPTO right this minute complete with registration granted date set for January 22nd, 2013.

drawing

The original drawing of the store (which you see above) includes a note about what the store is put in place to show: “retail store services featuring computers, computer software, computer peripherals.” This listing goes on to note “mobile phones, consumer electronics, and related accessories, and demonstration of products relating thereto.” This should ring a bell as the patent was first applied for in 2010 and lists mobile phones but not specifically tablet computers – they must simply be included in the overall computer listing in the first place.

Have a peek at the patent and let us know if you find anything else that rings your bells on what Apple now has the rights to. Were you planning on opening your own store soon with an Apple look? Let us know what you plan to do now!

Apple refreshes fourth generation iPad to include 128GB memory

Regardless of whether you love or hate the iPad, I am quite sure that you have crossed paths with it at least once in your lifetime. For those who fall under the latter category of feelings, well, perhaps this bit of news might irk you more, but for Apple fans, this is definitely pleasant news that will send you scurrying back to your piggy bank, wondering whether there is enough inside to help you make the jump to an upgrade. I am referring to the fourth generation iPad with Retina display which has just been announced to receive a bump to the total amount of storage space – it has basically doubled from 64GB to hit the 128GB mark, making it an Ultrabook alternative when you think about it. All you need now is a wireless keyboard accessory to hook up to the 128GB iPad and you’re good to go.

The 128GB version of the fourth generation iPad with Retina display will be made available for the iPad with Wi-Fi and iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular models, and with double the storage capacity of its predecessor, this would mean you are able to stash away even more valuable content ranging from photos to documents, projects, presentations, books, movies, TV shows, music and apps among others.

Sure, this is not exactly a quantum leap when it comes to hardware, but still, 128GB of storage space would make the iPad all the more desirable if you have yet to pick one up from Apple.

Just to recap, the fourth generation iPad will come with a 9.7-inch Retina display, where it runs on the Apple-designed A6X processor, accompanied by a FaceTime HD camera with iOS 6.1 as the operating system of choice. Expect the new 128GB models of the fourth generation iPad to be made available before Valentine’s Day, starting on February 5, where it will come in black or white colors. The asking price? $799 and $929 respectively, for the iPad with Wi-Fi model and the iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular model.

Sprint To Carry 128GB iPad 4

ipad 4 Sprint To Carry 128GB iPad 4It was just yesterday that Apple announced the 128GB iPad 4 and if you were planning on picking one up for yourself, it seems that Sprint will be one of the places that you will be able to get your hands on it. This was confirmed by Sprint’s Vice President of Product Development, Fared Adib in a statement released to iMore where he was quoted as saying, “Sprint is delighted to confirm that we will be offering our customers additional iPad options with the new 128GB iPad with Retina display.” For those who missed the news, the iPad 4 with 128GB was announced just yesterday and apart from the upgrade in storage, everything else remains pretty much the same.

The price tag on the other hand saw an increase and if you are planning to get the WiFi + Cellular option, be prepared to fork out a whopping $929 for it! Of course with the Retina display, apps, ebooks and digital magazines are getting noticeably larger in terms of the amount of memory they take up, so for iPad users who rely on the tablet heavily for their reading needs, perhaps the price tag might be justifiable although personally I think at $929 Apple might be asking for too much.

Starfish smartwatch to debut at MacWorld

There are a number of smartwatches on the market that promise to interface with smartphones and perform various other tasks. A company called Starfish Technologies is set to unveil a new smart watch specifically designed for the iPhone, iPad, and Android user at MacWorld kicking off tomorrow. The watch is called the Starfish.

The company isn’t offering up a lot of detail on hardware ahead of the official unveil during the MacWorld conference. What we do know is that the company is promising the world’s first truly interactive iPhone and Android compatible smartwatch. The company claims that the watch is the result of patent pending technology that allows it to communicate with the iPhone, iPad, or Android devices.

The watch promises interactive features and feedback that are unavailable in any other smartwatch. It appears that the majority of interactivity with the watch has to do with mirroring alerts and other information from the screen of your smartphone or other device. The watch will offer updates and alerts for incoming calls, text messages, e-mail, reminders, whether, breaking news, and stock market updates.

The Starfish watch also promises to allow you to answer calls, open text messages and e-mails, and access your music library. It will also run GPS or any other apps and has an integrated compass and G sensor. Those sensors allow the watch to gather information during workouts. The watch promises to last 24 hours per charge and there will be an SDK and API allowing users to create apps for the watch. The Starfish Smartwatch will sell for $169.

Apple boosts fourth-generation iPad to 128GB

Apple’s iPad line has topped out at 64GB since it was born. That perennial ceiling has been smashed: the company is hiking the capacity of the fourth-generation iPad…

iPad 5 to be smaller than usual, thinner bezel on the way

Earlier today, we pointed out some photos of what look to be the shell of the iPad 5 right up next to the iPad mini that we all know about. Nothing seemed too off at that point, until people started to notice that the size difference between the two tablets shown in the photos wasn’t that great. It appears that the iPad 5 will come with the same 9.7-inch display, but Apple may slap it into a smaller package.

ipad59to5mac-580x442

In the size comparison photo below, the iPad 5 will be slightly shorter and significantly narrower than the 4th-gen iPad, but as far as we know, it’ll have the same 9.7-inch display, hinting at the fact that the iPad 5 may come with a thinner bezel all the way around, similar to the bezel design of the iPad mini.

compare

It’s not all that surprising, though, and it makes sense that Apple is looking to unify the look and design between the iPad and the iPad mini, by making the larger iPad a bit smaller and sleeker and giving it a black matte finish on the back. We have to say that we’re big fans of uniformity, so this comes as a happy surprise.

The iPad 5 is said to be thinner than past iterations, although we’re not sure if it’ll surpass the thinness of the iPad 2, which is Apple’s thinness iPad so far. Other than the design change, everything else should be relatively the same. Volume buttons, the screen lock/mute switch, and the power button all look to be in the same locations, and it’ll obviously come with Apple’s new Lightning connector, as well as a rear-facing camera along with a front shooter.

Vine Porn disappears from surface of Twitter app

This week it’s become abundantly clear that the pornographic content issue has become a top priority for the developer teams at Vine, the Twitter-owned 6-second-video app. This app was released less than a week ago with a response that was no less than massive, both Twitter and Apple’s iTunes App Store pushing the app heavily to get the word out about its existence. Since then a significant amount of “NSFW” content has appeared in the Vine universe prompting ire from almost every direction.

porn_vine

Here on Tuesday the 29th of January it would appear that the Vine development team has cut out one entry into the porn problem with a rescinding of hashtags such as #porn, #nude, #sex, and #naked. Searching for these terms now results in a complete lack of results, not because none exist, but because the back end of Vine can be modified to kick out any terms they deem undesirable.

While no official comment on the situation as far as search terms has yet been issued by Vine or Twitter, we do know the results of the app having been “infected” by “Not Safe For Work” content have been dire. The first was the iTunes App Store cutting the app from it’s Editor’s Choice picks: though again, no official word on its disappearance has been made. Another result of the porn issue is the massive amount of press Vine has gotten almost immediately after its initial release.

This begs the question: should Twitter’s Vine team want to kick nudes out of the the mix, or should it simply pretend to be attempting to do so? You can still download the Vine app from the iTunes App Store for your iOS mobile device right this minute (or perhaps just for the time being) and we’ve still got no word on an Android release (or a Windows Phone release for that matter).

Make sure you keep your ear to the wire here on SlashGear for more Vine news as this epic saga continues to unfold! The timeline below should keep you up to date on all the excellence as well – and keep on recording those work safe videos with Vine, too!

iPad 5 photos appear with Mini aesthetics

Today we’ve seen confirmation of the iPad 4 being released with a newly massive amount of internal storage as well as, here and now, a new case for the up and coming iPad 5. The “confirmation” bit on the iPad 5 case we’re seeing here is more of an assurance from the source which we can’t independently confirm, but whose photos imply what’s expected either way – a case that matches the iPad mini. With the iPad 5 hitting some time this year and the newly massive iPad 4 being shown today, we must expect that this fifth generation 9.7-inch (standard iPad size) display-toting machine will be appearing closer to October of this year than the previously suggested March.

ipad59to5mac

With the iPad mini out on the market now taking names and serving up the competition for lunch, a show of power from Apple comes in an upgraded iPad 4. This most massive of iPads is the same model we saw in late 2012 with the launch of the iPad mini, this model coming with the same Lightning connector as the iPad mini and the iPhone 5 (and several iPods, mind you), complete with the same Retina display as the iPad 3. And a new processor, to boot.

ipad5-2

This iPad 5 model being shown by 9to5Mac is one which we’ve got little reason to doubt will take on an appearance much closer to that of the iPad mini than to the original iPad. Here with slightly rounder corners and a flattened color back (black in this case), we’re seeing Apple change while it stays the same. The version you’re seeing here appears to be the mobile-connected (4G LTE more than likely) iteration complete with the same tone as the iPad mini model depicted right next to it.

This version of the iPad has been tipped to be thinner than past iterations, perhaps thinner than the thinnest model, that being the iPad 2 (fun fact!) All the greatest hits are still here in the screen lock/mute, volume buttons, back-facing camera (still without a flash), microphone hole up in the center back of the device (paired with another under the speakers near the bottom almost certainly) and an overall sleek look.

Sound like a winner to you? Have a peek at the timeline below to see other recent iPad news and see if you can track this model all the way to the bank – the bank being October of 2013 – just you wait!
