Apple Podcasts app cuts out the iTunes middleman

In an effort to generate a new audience for the countless podcasts that live on iTunes today, Apple has decided to launch a new app that gives users instant and seamless access to this content. The Podcasts app pulls it all out of iTunes and gives users direct, seamless access to everything from guys recording weekly diatribes in their basement to the official podcasts from big names like ESPN and CBS.

Although it sometimes gets marred as being outdated, the podcasting medium remains as relevant as ever. Previously, the process of downloading or subscribing to a podcast required users to log into iTunes from a computer and find the show they wanted. This new app works for both the iPhone and iPad to bring that content to the wide world of consumers who own an iDevice but don’t really access Apple content from their PC.

In addition, because it’s now a standalone app, Apple has decided to throw in a couple nifty features. For example, there’s a Sleep Timer function for those who like to drift off to sleep with the soothing sounds of a podcast. Enabling this will automatically stop playback after a set amount of time. Users can also stream episodes online, or download them locally to listen on a plane or the subway. Incidentally, it does also offer iTunes syncing if you do happen to prefer that platform.

Apple releases its own Podcasts app for iOS devices

Apple releases its own Podcasts app for iOS

We’ve had some indication that podcasts would be receiving an app of their own with iOS 6, but it looks like we won’t have to wait that long after all. Apple has just released a new standalone app dubbed simply “Podcasts,” which is available for iOS devices running version 5.1 or later. It expectedly offers a variety of ways to browse and discover podcasts among the thousands available (including a new Top Stations feature that groups select podcasts by category), as well as the ability to either stream episodes or download them for offline use. The app is also optimized for the iPad in addition to the iPhone, and it’s thankfully able to sync podcasts with iTunes on your Mac or Windows PC (just be sure to upgrade to iTunes 10.6.3 first). No charge for this one, either.

San Diego Unified School District purchases 26,000 iPads to be used in classrooms

It seems that tablets being used in our education system are becoming more commonplace these days. To that effect, the San Diego Unified School District has recently purchased about 26,000 iPads that will be making its way into the hands of its students this fall, thus making it one of the largest programs to date. This is part of a voter-approved funding program known as “Proposition S”, which basically sets funds aside that will allow technology in the classroom to remain up to date. No word on what sort of software the district will be utilizing, but some are speculating that it could use Apple’s iBooks 2 which has been enhanced for textbooks. The iPads will mainly be utilized in 5th and 8th grade classrooms as well as some high school classes. So if you’re a parent whose kids are attending any of the schools in the San Diego Unified School District, it looks like your kids are in for a treat this fall.

Apple sends iOS 6 beta 2 to developers

iOS 6 splash

The wait between iOS 6’s unveiling and its planned fall release just got a little bit shorter, as Apple has just pushed out beta 2. If you’re in the developer crowd that can try it out, don’t expect any revelations: the primarily focus is on the bug fixes that nudge the software closer to a final release. As in past years, multiple additional betas are expected between now and the time the iOS 6 is ready to come to the general public, so there’s likely still lots of room left for Apple to polish the release to a shine. Those paid up on their developer accounts can grab the update through the usual means and see just how much luster has been added since WWDC.

100MHz Logic Analyzer for iPad

So you are sick and tired of using your iPad for nothing other than playing games and as a portable media player that won’t die on you across a long haul flight. What else do you think your iPad is able to do? Well, with the right app and in the correct setting, plenty, and for those who want to take the road less traveled, here is the $389.99 100MHz Logic Analyzer for iPad. Yes sir, this might sound like Greek to some of us, but allow me to explain.

Basically, this is a logic analyzer with the real time data analysis capabilities of an oscilloscope. Most of the time, tradition dictates that a logic analyzer will record a buffer that then needs to be downloaded and searched. With the 100MHz Logic Analyzer for iPad, things have definitely changed, and I am proud to say, for the better. This device boasts of advanced triggering, decoded data which can be viewed live, doing away with the need for capturing, pausing, and viewing. You no longer need to settle for plain pictures as it is now possible to analyze data – live data, no less. Curious enough to give it a go?

Tablift Lets You Use Your iPad in Bed, Effortlessly

I used my iPad last night in bed and woke up with a pretty stiff neck. In fact, it was stiff for the most part of my day, which gave way to a rotten mood and a ruined day. I get similar aches from using the tablet when I’m sitting down or in a reclined position. So when I saw the Tablift up on Kickstarter, well, let me just say that I thought it was a godsend.

TabliftTablift is an accessory that will make it easy for anyone with an iPad to use it while they’re lying down in bed or chilling on their couches. It’s basically a sturdy stand with super long, bendy legs that can be adjusted independently, so you can use it in virtually any position.

At first glance, the Tablift looks like a bulky accessory, but the cool thing is that it folds down entirely, so you can stow it away and take it with you wherever you might use your iPad.

If you’re interested, you can head on over to Tablift’s Kickstarter page to learn all about it and maybe even back the project. A minimum pledge of $60(USD) will get you one Tablift if the project’s target of $78,000 is raised by July 12th.

Hands On With The Moshi iGlaze With VersaCover iPad Case

scaled-9771

Finding the right iPad cover is sort of a first world problem – there’s plenty of choice and you just don’t know what to spend your money on. I’ve been using a Speck case and the smart cover for a while but I think I found my new favorite, the Moshi iGlaze with folding VersaCover. What it lacks in naming finesse it makes up for in beauty.

This case features a bonded cover and clear back shell case (called iGlaze). The cover itself is the real draw, however. It is made of soft material and folds in five places. Two magnets hold the edges together, turning it into sort of a cup or beak that you can use to hold up the iPad in portrait or landscape positions.

Moshi doesn’t make cases in crazy colors or styles – no Hello Kitty here – but the iGlaze is delightfully low-key and seems to just work. I can’t comment on the durability yet – I haven’t dragged this onto forty planes and through 80 TSA checkpoints yet – but at first blush it seems like it will last at least as long as a my Speck/Smart Cover combo.

Apple has already entered the full case space with the $49 Smart Case but I think the unique folding design of this $60 Moshi model may make up for the lack of color choice. It’s a cool case with plenty of flair and well worth checking out if you’re in the market.
