If going all the way back to your inbox to peruse those Gmail threads on your Apple handset was a little too taxing, relief has arrived. Google has updated said app for the iPhone and iPad to enable swiping between messages without the need to return to the main repository. Version 2.1 also makes wrangling multiple emails at the same time a bit easier. When a message is selected, edit mode kicks into gear for archiving, deleting and other essential tasks via a novel actions bar atop the UI. Final Fantasy V Coming To iOS Tomorrow

Final Fantasy V Coming To iOS Tomorrow

We’ve been expecting Final Fantasy V to be made available onto iOS some time this month, and seeing how this is the final week of March, there’s no better time for the game to be released than this week. Considering the game just made itself available in the New Zealand App Store, that pretty much guarantees the game will be made available in the U.S. App Store later this evening.

Square Enix originally announced Final Fantasy V would be made available only in Japan, but seeing how many fans of the series, as well as this specific title, in the U.S., we had a feeling they’d bring it to the U.S. as well. (more…)

The Sne Stand Cradles Your iPad In Its Graceful Curve

We’ve all spent a lifetime staring at TVs several feet away, so it makes sense that man lacks the requisite strength to hold a tablet for prolonged viewing sessions. Resorting to a stand is nothing to be ashamed of, particularly if it’s got the graceful curves of the sne. More »

iOS 6.1.3 Users Report Battery Drain, Wi Fi Connectivity Issues

iOS 6.1.3 was released last week in order to help fix its passcode security flaw, but it looks as though Apple may have rushed its release a tad as a number of iOS users who updated to the latest version are complaining of both battery drain and Wi-Fi issues.

A number of iOS users have taken to Apple’s Support Communities forum to reveal iOS 6.1.3 has been draining their batteries more quickly than it did in iOS 6.1.2. Some users even reported a continued drain on their battery even after they turned off all notifications and even going as far as restoring their device to its factory settings. (more…)

IDC: Tablet Sales Grew 78.4% YoY In 2012 – Expected To Pass Desktop Sales In 2013, Portable PCs In 2014

Ipads

Strong growth in tablet sales is helping to drive overall growth in the global smart connected device market, according to analyst IDC, as the market reshapes itself with mobility at its core. Posting a new report for full year 2012 and projections through to 2017, the analyst notes that market expansion last year was “largely driven” by 78.4% year-over-year growth in tablet shipments — which exceeded 128 million units. But this is just the beginning for tablets: IDC expects tablet shipments to surpass desktop PCs in 2013, and portable PCs in 2014.

Overall, worldwide shipments of smart connected devices grew 29.1% year over year in 2012, and the entire market pushed past one billion units shipped, with a total market value of $576.9 billion.

IDC said it expects tablets to grow their share of the overall smart devices market from 10.7% in 2012, to an estimated 16% by 2017 — with a projected growth rate of 174.5% between 2012 and 2017. Over the same period, the desktop PC category will have negative growth of -5%, and will slide from 12.4% share in 2012 to 6% share in 2017.

Portable PCs are also project to take a declining share of the market, dropping from a 16.8% share in 2012 down to 11% estimated for 2017. The category will still see some growth, according to IDC, which is projecting 19.3% growth for portables over 2012 to 2017. But the powerhouse growth is in the tablets and smartphone categories — the latter projected to also grow by triple-digits (109.9%).

This year IDC said it expects the tablet market to reach “a new high” of 190 million shipment units, with year-on-year growth of 48.7%. While the smartphone market is expected to grow 27.2% to 918.5 million units.

“Consumers and business buyers are now starting to see smartphones, tablets, and PCs as a single continuum of connected devices separated primarily by screen size,” said Bob O’Donnell, IDC Program Vice President for Clients and Displays, in a statement. “Each of these devices is primarily used for data applications and different individuals choose different sets of screen sizes in order to fit their unique needs. These kinds of developments are creating exciting new opportunities that will continue to drive the smart connected devices market forward in a positive way.”

Powered by growth in the tablet and smartphone categories, IDC predicts the worldwide smart connected device market will continue to “surge” — with shipments forecast to surpass 2.2 billion units and revenues reaching $814.3 billion in 2017. By 2017, 83% of the market is projected to be composed of smartphones and tablets, up from 70.8% in 2012.

Returning to 2012, IDC noted that in Q4 of the year Apple significantly closed the gap with market leader Samsung in the quarter, thanks to the combination of its refreshed smartphone (iPhone 5) and new smaller tablet (iPad Mini). Apple took 20.3% unit shipment share in the quarter versus 21.2% for Samsung, according to IDC. On a revenue basis, Apple continued to dominate with 30.7% share versus 20.4% share for Samsung.

Perhaps the most exciting feature found in Flipboard 2.0 is the ability to create your own magazines based on content you like. Users can collect pictures, audio, videos, and articles, then aggregate them into a single magazine for easy viewing. That magazine can be kept private for personal use, or it can be shared with the public for others to enjoy. It doesn’t take much to see various ways this could come in handy to users.

In addition, users can use a bookmarklet via their browser to flip just about anything online, where it will be added to one’s personal magazine in an easily browsed format. Magazines created by other users are also available via the Content Guide’s “By Our Readers,” showing off user-made magazines from select users. Speaking of the Content Guide, it now boasts a redesign with a red ribbon bearing personalized table of contents, notifications, and more.

Comments can be viewed and left for stories, in addition to @mention-format user tags. There are now reading recommendations as well listed under Cover Stories, with a list of items generated based on user activity. Subsections have been added to partner magazines for faster browsing, while related content can now be pulled up in publications via the section name.

Logitech announces Keyboard Folio for iPads

Logitech has just announced it next line-up of keyboards designed for Apple’s iPad and iPad Mini. The new keyboard will take the typing experience that users loved from Logitech’s Ultrathin Keyboard Cover and “add an extra layer of protection.” The new Keyboard Folio will protect your iPad while also offering you a typing experience that transcends that of the iPad’s on-screen keyboard.

The Keyboard Folio will have magnets to ensure your Folio is fully closed and that your device is safe. The keyboard will also feature full-size keys, so that you can adapt quickly to the accessory and shell out emails, messages, and search queries painfully easy. The keyboard also has shortcuts designed for the iPad that will allow you to do a lot more without having to lift your hands. You can also adjust the angle of your Folio to your preference. You can fold your Folio to hide the keyboard, or you can prop up the stand to enjoy a full keyboard typing experience.

The keyboard, like all other Folio keyboards, connects to your iPad device through Bluetooth. The Keyboard Folio will also wake up your iPad when you open it, and put your iPad to sleep when you close it. That way you are able to conserve your iPad’s battery life as much as possible. You can recharge your keyboard with the USB cable provided, however you probably won’t need to for a while since it can last up to 3 months average on a full charge.

The Logitech Keyboard Folio for the iPad will launch in both the United States and Europe in April 2013. You can purchase one for $99.99. The Keyboard Folio for the iPad Mini will launch in May 2013, for a cheaper price of $89.99. The Logitech Keyboard Folio will be available in Pink, Yellow, Blue or Black. You can find out more about the Keyboard Folio in the source link below.

Logitech launches keyboard folios for iPad, iPad Mini video

The iPad was never designed to be a laptop, but some people can’t resist the urge to change a gadget’s nature. For that purpose, Logitech is outing keyboard folios for the iPad and iPad Mini that double as a hands-free viewing stand for those long-haul flights. Your fingers will be hovering over a Bluetooth keyboard with membrane scissor keys, covered in your choice of colored fabric shell. The hardware is marked down to be available in the US and Europe in April, setting you back $100 for the iPad edition and $89.99 for the 7.87-inch version — and if you’d like to learn more, you can check out the videos we’ve stashed after the break.

Logitech Keyboard Folio for iPad and iPad mini

Logitech Keyboard Folio for iPad and iPad miniLogitech has just released new version of its Keyboard for iPad and IPad mini. Both models work as cover cases and use a design principle that is now pretty successful for iPad keyboards. The Logitech Keyboard Folio for iPad ($99.99) is designed to provide the largest key size that Logitech could come up with, and “high-quality” materials, says Logitech. We haven’t tested one yet, so we can’t vouch for it, but the key travel and the overall design look reasonable, so now it’s mostly about how the key membranes perform. (more…)

The Blind Have Use For An iPad, Too

The blind might not be the original target market for the folks over at Apple with the hugely successful iPad tablet in the first place, but this does not mean that with a little bit of training, some perseverance, as well as the right kind of software in place, the blind as well as visually impaired folks too, are able to take advantage of this popular tablet device.

As you can check out in the video above from Bloomberg, Jon Erlichman from the same company participated in a workshop that actually helps instruct teachers on how one is able to unlock the power of the iPad for the visually impaired. This is definitely a heart warming video, as we see barriers being broken down thanks to the wonders of modern technology. I wonder whether similar training concepts and ideas can be incorporated so that those who want to use tablets on the Android platform will not feel left out of the equation.
