Nook for iOS adds support for high-res iPad magazines, Nook Comics

Nook for iOS supports Nook Comics, highres magazines on iPads

Barnes & Noble may have saved most of the limelight today for in-app purchasing on Nook hardware, but it’s not leaving other platforms by the wayside. Its Nook 3.4 update for iOS focuses heavily on visuals, with new support for both Nook Comics as well as “HD” magazines on Retina display-equipped iPads. Likewise, there’s some spring cleaning afoot: the app offers better organization for periodicals, the option to expand book illustrations and newly animated page turns. Swing by the App Store if you’ve got enough of a toehold in Barnes & Noble’s ecosystem to use its software.

ChargeBite Draws Power From Other iPhones To Recharge Yours

Being a smartphone owner these days means you’ll most likely have to keep your device connected to its charger when you’re home, in your car and sometimes, when you visit someone else’s home. Keeping your battery charged at an acceptable level is something we all constantly worry about, but a new device will hopefully have you worrying a little bit less, that is, as long as you have friends around with charged devices.

The ChargeBite is a charger that doesn’t have you relying on an electrical outlet in order to get your charging needs. Instead, it features three 30-pin docks to suck the power out of other iOS devices in order to help keep yours charged. Think of it as the modern day version of walking over to a neighbor’s house to ask for a cup of sugar. (more…)

Apple Adds ‘Offers In-App Purchases’ Warning To App Store Descriptions

Apple Adds Offers In App Purchases Warning To App Store DescriptionsConsidering how easy it is for anyone to be able to make an in-app purchase in iOS as long as you memorize the password attached to the iTunes account you’re using, it isn’t surprising to hear Apple has updated its App Store to include a warning for apps that include in-app purchases.

Within an application’s description, a new “Offers In-App Purchases” disclaimer can be seen prominently displayed underneath its ratings. This warning may discourage someone from picking up a game that is perceived to be free, but instead, is littered with in-app purchases throughout the entire experience. (more…)

ChargeBite Leeches Power from Other iPhones to Charge Yours, Tells You Who Your Real Friends Are

Do you have an iPhone? You wanna know how you can get your friends to gift you an external battery pack? Support the ChargeBite’s fundraiser. The ChargeBite is a charger for 30-pin iOS devices, but it doesn’t have its own battery. What it does is draw power from other 30-pin iOS devices to transfer to your own. See where I’m going with this?

chargebite iphone social charger

Inventors Liran Elihay and Asaf Gaber call their invention “a social charger.” The advantage of course is that you don’t have to carry an external battery pack and the ChargeBite never needs to be charged. I guess I don’t know have to tell you the obvious drawbacks of the ChargeBite, but I will make this clear – as far as I can tell you need two donor iOS devices to charge one iOS device.

I don’t think the ChargeBite is utterly useless, but overall I cannot in good conscience recommend that you support its fundraiser. We can’t fit two friends and their iPhones into our pockets. But years of reading about the likes of Brando have given me a soft spot for crazy gadgets and doodads. Just the fact that this actually exists should be enough for us.

Speedtest.net for iOS updates with all-new design

When it comes to all of the interesting apps that do one thing well, Speedtest.net is one of the best out there, and we sometimes use it to test out new LTE markets for hands-on sessions and reviews. The app gives you both your download and upload speeds either over WiFi or a data connection, and it received a big update today for iOS users. It comes with an all-new design, as well as iPhone 5 support, and a few new features.

speedtest

The redesign features a Tron-esque look to it, and it’s completely different from the web version, which it replicated in the past and didn’t look that great, honestly. The newly-designed app features neon buttons and dials, which give it that futuristic look that it pulls off quite well. Plus, there are some new sorting features that users will love.

Users can now sort results by either type, time, download speed, upload speed, or ping. Tapping on a result will also provide more information about that specific test, including where the test was taken, giving users a comprehensive history of their WiFi or data speed results, making sure they’re getting the speeds they’re paying for.

speedtest-ads

Users can now more easily share results with friends, using email, Facebook, Twitter, or iOS Messages. The app is completely free, but it comes with ads. However, Speedtest.net finally has a paid version that’s ad-free, although it’s in the form of an in-app purchase rather than another paid app. Users can pay a one-time fee of $0.99 to remove all the ads.

PopCap Games’ Solitaire Blitz Jumps From Facebook To iOS

PopCap Games Solitaire Blitz Jumps From Facebook To iOS

By now, you should know the name PopCap Games as they’ve released some truly addictive game experiences in recent years, such as Peggle and Plants vs. Zombies. Another one of their addictive titles that has yet to make its way across multiple platforms is its Facebook-only game, Solitaire Blitz. That all changes this week as PopCap is announcing the game is now available on iOS.

Yes – this pretty much is a game of solitaire, but it certainly has a PopCap Games twist to it as you’ll be able to play any number card that will hit into the solitaire pile, regardless of the suit of the card. This helps in making the game fast paced, which is entirely the point as you’ll only have a little over a minute to complete your game. (more…)

American Airlines Shows Off Its iPad Equipped Planes

Back in 2011 we reported that American Airlines was considering replacing their flight bags with iPads, ultimately saving a ton of weight while keeping things modern. Just to give you an idea, American Airlines has calculated that each flight bag will weigh around 35 pounds, and that’s per plane (per flight). They have estimated that by removing the flight bags, they should be able to save over $1 million each year. Well it looks like the American Airlines finally went ahead with their plan, and the folks at Gadling managed to get a tour of the cockpit of an American Airline plane to see what it would look like with iPads installed (video above).

So instead of lugging around heavy flight bags, pilots now get an iPad each and a Hypermac backup battery that will be able to extend the battery life of the iPad by an additional 24 hours. While going modern seems to be in everyone’s best interest, the folks at the FAA might not agree. It seems that with the tablets and their additional batteries, the FAA feels that this is tantamount to pilots carrying flight bags and may not necessarily see the point. In any case American Airlines has already gotten approval for the 777, 737, and MD-80 planes and are waiting for approval for their 757/767 fleet.
