Editorial: Apple apologies actually aren’t that infrequent, and that’s okay

Editorial Apple apologies actually aren't that infrequent, and that's okay

Today, Tim Cook made his first major apology as the CEO of Apple. It probably won’t be his last. Despite the obvious knee-jerk reaction regarding the Maps debacle, it’s actually interesting that this particular scenario is yet another example of humans having extraordinarily short-term memories. It’s the same reason that whatever game we most recently saw is the “best or worst ever.” (Packers v. Seahawks 09.24.2012, I’m looking at you.) In truth, Apple has a fairly solid history of ingesting pride in the iPhone era, when it surged headfirst into the realm of serving consumers in a way that it never had before. And moreover, hearing Cook apologize isn’t something that should be mocked or berated; one can only hope that more companies of all shapes and sizes develop a policy of listening and reacting. Allow me to explain.

The iPhone 5 Has Arrived: But Which iPhone Is The Best Value?

iPhone5-iphone4s

The iPhone 5 is now on sale in most launch markets starting today, and as daylight approaches on the U.S. west coast, the coveted device will be hitting that market as well. According to early reviews, it’s a great device, but that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the right one for everybody. Even if you’re still a potential iPhone buyer, the lineup has never looked so good. The iPhone 4 and the 4S remain on the market, and they both have a lot to offer, too, at a considerable discount.

Here’s a handy guide to what you get with each device, created by TechCrunch. We’ve tried to distill it down to the most important factors, and when you combine this with our chart detailing what each model does and doesn’t get with the iOS 6 update, you should have an easier time deciding which one to pick up.

With most of the software features and a form factor some might actually prefer, the iPhone 4S at $99 is a mighty fine-looking deal. It’ll be interesting to see, once carrier data and Apple’s own quarterly results come in, how popular that remains as a second tent pole in Apple’s overall lineup.

Of course, one other important factor to consider might be availability. The iPhone 5 will likely be scarce today, with lineups around the world sizeable at Apple Stores this morning, if you’ve got your heart set on the iPhone 5 it’s probably worth waiting for.

iOS 6 gets it jailbreak already, but only on older A4powered iPhones and iPods

iOS 6 probably won’t go down in history as a revolutionary update, but fortunately it’s anti-tamper measures don’t seem to have changed much either. The iPhone Dev-Team has already managed to get its redsn0w tethered jailbreak working, at least for the A4-powered iPhone 4, 3GS and 4th-gen iPod touch, and you’ll find full instructions as well as a healthy list of caveats at the source link below. As to how long it’ll take to get some Cydia action on the iPhone 5 and other fresher devices and without the hassle of tethering, place your bets here.

Apple iOS 6 released

Good news folks! Apple has just opened the flood gates and released the official version of iOS 6 today for the world. You diehard Apple fans have probably been running iOS 6 from the beta, or GM release a few weeks ago, but today the final version is rolling out and available right this minute for all those iDevices.

While we’re pretty sure many of you are patiently waiting for that shiny new iPhone 5 to arrive, for those that didn’t upgrade you can surely get close with iOS 6. Apple’s new Siri improvements, Their own home-brewed 3D Maps with flyover, passbook and more. I’m sure you all know plenty about iOS 6 already and just would like to know how to get it.

The folks from Cupertino have been working hard and are pushing the update out as we speak. We’ve been hearing from multiple sources that the rollout has just begun and is rolling out in stages. Users of iOS 5 devices should be able to update over-the-air right on their devices, and as usual all can use iTunes to do the same. As a precaution it’s always good to backup your iPhone or iPad first just to be safe.

We mentioned this morning the update would start rolling out around 1:00 PM EST and that is in just a few minutes. Most likely the masses will start seeing the update arrive shortly. The update is likely being staggered so if you don’t see it right away don’t be too upset, try again in a few minutes and you’ll be enjoying that iOS 6 greatness soon enough. You might also want to make sure you’re running the latest iTunes 10.7

For more details on iOS 6 you’ll want to check out our Apple Hub, or take a peek at our in depth iPhone 5 and iOS 6 review.

iOS 6 review

iOS 6 review

Starting tomorrow, iOS users will be prompted to update their devices to the newest iteration of Apple’s mobile operating system. As difficult as it is to believe, we’re already onto the sixth version of the OS, which continues to be updated with new features on a yearly basis. After pushing out so many upgrades critical to plugging a few major feature holes, the vast majority of its 200 advertised enhancements are strictly granular, as Apple continues to polish its popular OS.

That doesn’t mean, though, that this build is coming to the masses without any jarring UI changes: Apple has declared independence from Google by adopting its own Maps, added a few nice features to Mail and iCloud, thrown Facebook integration into the mix and introduced the Passbook for paperless tickets. The question is, how does it stack up against previous refreshes? Read on to find out.

Rumor: iPhone 4 discontinued by Sprint with iPhone 5 release?

The iPhone 5 is definitely going to be a blockbuster by the time it is sold in retail channels, that is for sure, no matter what people say about its specifications and recent unveiling. Well, there is a possibility that the iPhone 4 could actually end up as a discontinued device on Sprint on the very same day, which would definitely not bode well for anyone who wants to pick up the iPhone 4 (for free most probably). Whnen the iPhone 5 was announced, it was also mentioned that the 8GB iPhone 4 will actually be made available for free as long as you sign up for a new contract. While there might not be a free lunch in this world, a free iPhone 4 might be a rather tempting proposition, don’t you think so?

To be fair, however, the official iPhone 5 press release did also mention that any free iPhone 4 will be made available to the masses only via “select carriers”, and there is every possibility that Sprint will not be part of that particular list. Needless to say, this bit of interpretation might go off on a tangent, so who knows, there could very well be a free iPhone 4 coming your way in due time.

Samsung: Hey, doesn’t the iPhone 4 look a lot like our old MP3 players

Samsung has ramped up its PR offensive in the aftermath of the $1bn Apple ruling, highlighting similarities between its media players and the iPhone 4 launched later on. There “is a lot of misunderstanding” about design inspiration, Samsung wrote on its official blog, and it intends to use “objective facts, one by one, to reveal the truth [and] resolve all the misunderstandings.”

First step of that process is wheeling out the Samsung YP-Q3, a media player from back in early 2010, and one which Samsung believes is surprisingly similar to the industrial design of Apple’s iPhone 4. That smartphone actually launched in 2010 as well, but two months later than Samsung’s PMP did.

It’s not the only Samsung-branded gadget that pre-empted the iPhone 4 with some passably similar styling, the company would like to point out. The YP-Zt, another media player, also had a now-distinctive black fascia and silver surround, with crisp corners like the iPhone 4/4S.

Then, of course, there’s the Samsung F700. The 2006 touchscreen smartphone was a center point of Samsung’s defense strategy for the iPhone design suit, though it failed to help the company escape final censure.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen Samsung look to sway public opinion when its ability to convince the court was less than successful. The Korean company encountered a furious Apple and an angry judge after it released a dossier of design arguments contrasting the iPhone’s style with its own design output. Whether this latest attempt will prove at all useful for Samsung’s appeal is questionable.

Sprint to no longer offer the iPhone 4 starting from the 21st of September?

When Apple introduced the iPhone 5, they also revealed that the iPhone 3GS would be discontinued and the iPhone 4 8GB would replace it as the “free” version on contract. Unfortunately they also stated that only select carriers would be offering it and it turns out that Sprint might not be one of them. The folk at 9to5 Mac have managed to get their hands on what appears to be an internal screenshot of Sprint’s internal system which has revealed that the carrier will be discontinuing the iPhone 4 on the 21st of September. The screenshot appears to be legit although we guess that anyone with Photoshop will have no trouble throwing something similar together. In any case we guess we will find out if this is true come 21st of September, so for those looking to get the iPhone 4 free on contract, you might have to try your luck at other carriers such as AT&T or Verizon.
