Gumdrop Drop Series Protects Your iPhone from Falls

GumDrop DropSeries Case

If you take your iPhone 4 to some dangerous places, or you just have a horrible habit of dropping your phone whenever you take it out of your pocket, putting a Gumdrop Drop Series iPhone 4 Case on your phone will help you get a little more life out of your iPhone 4. The Drop Series case is thick and rugged, and protects the phone on all sides.
It comes in a multi-layered series of protectors, including a screen protector on the front, and two layers of shock absorption, including a shock-absorbing rubberized polyurethane internal case and a hard plastic external case. The Drop Series comes with two replaceable screen protectors and a belt clip if you want to carry it on your waist.
You won’t have access to all of the iPhone’s ports while it’s in the case, but you will have access to the screen and the ability to use the camera. The inner case has openings for the buttons and ports, but the exterior case The Drop Series for iPhone 4 is available now in five two-tone color combinations for $44.95 retail price.

Pantone iPhone and iPad cases thumb their noses at Apple’s grayscale aesthetic

Considering the affection the design community has for Apple products and the Pantone Matching System, combining these passions seems ripe for success. At least that’s Case Scenario’s theory with this new line of licensed cases: they’re Pantone approved, so you know the hues and ridiculous code names are legit. In total, nine different versions are available for the iPhone and four for the iPad, providing plenty of style leeway should the colorware route be out of your budget. No word on pricing or availability just yet, so for now it looks like our Capsure color identifier will have to remain holstered until more details surface.

iPhone 4 “as Low as $24” at Radioshack

iphone 4 flat.jpg

A $24 iPhone 4 at Radioshack? Too good to be true? Sort of. It can happen, but it takes a tricky bit of legwork. Let’s start with the one week sale the electronics retailer is holding, which discounts all iPhone models by $50. New customers and those eligible for upgrades can nab a 16GB iPhone 4 for $150 and a 32GB model for $250. You with me so far? Good.

Okay, next there’s the Trade & Save program–bring in a working iPhone 3G, and you’ll get a $75 credit for a new phone. Bring in an iPhone 3GS, and you’ll get a $125 credit. The $125 credit and the $50 discount bring the price of the 16GB iPhone 4 down to $24.99 (with the requisite contract, naturally).

A tricky bit of legwork, sure, and the stars really have to align to take advantage of the deal, but still, a nice discount if you can get it. Radio Shack is also providing an Eligibility Checker, to see if you qualify for the updgrade pricing. Good Luck.

Apple’s iPhone 4 (legitimately) on sale for the first time: $50 off at Radio Shack

Missed out on Black Friday? Good on you. Now, still in the market for an iPhone 4? If so, you should probably point your vehicle to the nearest Radio Shack, STAT. For the first time since going on sale in June, Apple’s iPhone 4 is legitimately on sale from a retailer that actually exists and won’t sell your personal information to some goon in an offshore paradise you’ve never heard of. (No, Walmart’s $2 savings doesn’t count.) We’re told that the $50-off sale is being done to ramp up awareness surrounding Radio Shack’s (admittedly low-key) wireless business, and if we had to guess, we’d say it’ll probably work to perfection. Ever since the handset began shipping this summer, the going rate was $199 (on contract) for the 16GB model or $299 (also on contract) for the 32GB flavor; this deal hacks $50 from each, and there’s even an 8GB iPhone 3GS for $49 if you’re looking to take things even lower. Better still, The Shack‘s offering a $75 trade-in credit on any functional / non-cracked iPhone 3G as well as $125 for a 3GS in like condition, meaning that you could walk in today, hand over your 3GS, and walk out with an iPhone 4 for $25 (plus activation fees). Naturally, the deal’s only available in brick-and-mortar locations (read: not online), and the fun comes to a close on December 11th. So, who’s in?

Mophie Juice Pack Plus ‘more than doubles’ iPhone 4 battery life

Fan of the original 1,500mAh Mophie Juice pack for the iPhone 4? Sure, we certainly were when we reviewed it a few months back. So let us introduce you to the new Mophie Juice Pack Plus featuring a bigger 2,000mAh battery that more than doubles the life of Apple’s non-removable iPhone 4 battery. Unfortunately, the extra oomph bumps the price from $79.95 to $99.95 and adds another 1mm of bulk to the pack — not that a minor size bump should matter too much when you’re already strapping your svelte phone to a battery sled. It’s available now in black with yellow, Engadget Mobile magenta, and classic Engadget cyan coming soon.

Daily Gift: Bone Horn Stand Amplifier for iPod

horniphone.jpgAttention iPhone owners: we have found possibly one of the coolest gifts under $25 for you. If you’ve ever strained to hear the sound on a YouTube video, or have ever tried to jam out to your tunes via your iPhone’s included speaker, you know how hard it can be to really get good audio. The Bone Horn Stand uses design elements from gramophones of the past, and brings a simple concept to the age of the iPhone. Simply stick your iPhone into the stand, and voila — the sound is automatically louder by 13 decibels.

The Bone Horn is made out of silicone — and that’s it. There are no batteries needed, and no adapters to plug in. It’s simply the trumpet-shape of the horn that amplifies the sound from your phone. Science!

Besides working as a way to boost your volume, the Bone Horn also acts as stand. You can prop your phone into a vertical or horizontal position.

The Bone Horn Stand fits the original iPhone, iPhone 3G/3GS, the iPhone 4. It comes in beige, black, and green, and sells for $24.95 at the Cyberguys.com.

Imagine the possibilities if you used the Bone Horn with the Pocket Vuvuzela iPhone app.

Check out the video after the jump to see the Horn Stand in action — well, sort of.

ThinkGeek TK-421 iPhone keyboard case review

We’ve been eagerly waiting for iPhone cases with built-in keyboards to hit ever since iOS 4 added Bluetooth keyboard support, but they simply haven’t materialized like we’d hoped — in fact, ThinkGeek’s TK-421 case is the first to hit the market, nearly eight months after iOS 4 was first announced. Now that it’s finally here, we’ve got to ask — is this thing the ultimate iPhone accessory? Does the iPhone actually need a keyboard? Does flipping open automatically make something awesome? Read on to find out.

It comes in vibrant colors and is engineered from strong polycarbonate. It’s a one-piece case that snaps onto your device, leaving the charging port, camera, and controls fully accessible.

You can pick up the Vent Shell at AT&T stores for $29.99 in a two-pack that includes both red and black cases. If you’d prefer a two-pack that includes clear and purple cases, visit AT&T’s wireless accessories page. For other colors and combinations, visit the AG Findings Web site

iOS 4.2 supports new tech to reduce network congestion, Nokia Siemens says

One of the world’s top suppliers of cellular infrastructure, Nokia Siemens, has dropped some juicy knowledge today that Apple’s new iOS 4.2 update supports a technology called network-controlled fast dormancy that better optimizes how the phone connects to the network. The company touts that it’s a win-win — better battery life, less unnecessary network utilization — and also points out that Nokia implemented the technique in all of its smartphones starting earlier this year. Since network-controlled fast dormancy is a feature that benefits the network itself as much as it benefits the individual user, knocking out two power players like Nokia and Apple (over half of new smartphone sales, NSN points out) should make a big dent.

Interestingly, NSN seems to have arrived at this discovery through “tests” it conducted, not by working with Apple on implementing it. Sure, we don’t pretend to know all the interactions that occur between manufacturers, carriers, and suppliers during a phone’s development, but it certainly seems to us that Apple would benefit by engaging infrastructure companies early and often as these baseband updates come together — particularly as it seeks to keep a tight lid on the very congestion issues that network-controlled fast dormancy is designed to help eliminate. Either way, it’s interesting to see how quick Nokia Siemens was to probe for the change this time around.
