Apple Drops iPhone 4S Price To $99, Will Give Away The iPhone 4 For Free

iphone_4s

At the Apple live event, Tim Cook announced that the iPhone 4S will still be available and the price will drop to $99.

Apple is perpetuating the same strategy by keeping the previous generation iPhone in its lineup to attract customers concerned by the price. The iPhone 4 will stay in the lineup as well and Apple will give it away if you sign a two-year contract in the U.S. A similar offering should show up around the world at the launch of the iPhone 5.

With the iPhone 4S, the company is competing directly with entry-level smartphones, such as the Motorola Razr M.

Producing a cheaper phone is important as well for emerging markets, such as China, Brazil or Russia. It will allow users to switch from a feature phone to a smartphone. The platform and ecosystem lock-in is key to understanding that price point. After buying apps on the App Store and accessories specifically made for the iPhone, you will tend to keep buying iPhone products.

The question is whether users will buy a 3.5-inch 3G smartphone when nearly every smartphone now has a bigger screen and LTE connectivity.

Apple details iPhone 5 and its thinner 8 megapixel camera

Apple’s got a brand new camera lens inside of the new iPhone 5 so all you photo snappers and Instagram lovers can prepare for some goodness. Apple’s just detailed their all new 8 megapixel camera, as well as the 720p capable Facetime front shooter although nothing is extremely new.

Essentially what we have is a near identical camera as what we saw with last years iPhone 4S. The difference here is of course quality will be slightly improved, but they’ve also made it thinner, much thinner. The iPhone 5 is being touted as the world’s thinnest smartphone and this plays a big role. How big exactly? 25% thinner while still managing to improve the specs and features.

As you can see from the image above, the 8 megapixel camera has a 3,264 x 2,448 backside-illuminated sensor, f/2.4 aperture and more. This is the same as the previous generation only thinner. This helps the device reach that ultra thin level it couldn’t achieve before. The new camera being smaller helps them pack everything in here. I’m excited about that new and improved dynamic low light mode! More details coming up shortly and once again, follow along at live.slashgear.com

iPhone 5 revealed as ‘world’s thinnest smartphone’

The iPhone 5 has officially arrived folks, and Apple is making some pretty big promises about it. The first is that it’s the “world’s thinnest smartphone.” In his announcement, Phil Schiller revealed that the iPhone 5 is 7.6mm thick, which is an 18% decrease in thickness over the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 5 is pretty light too, weighing in at only 112 grams – that’s 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 is the same width as the iPhone 4S is, but it’s a good amount taller. That change was made to accommodate the new screen, which measures in at 4-inches. That’s a pretty significant upgrade, considering that iPhone screens of the past have come in at 3.5-inches.

Of course, the iPhone 5 also features Retina Display, which will undoubtedly be a big selling point for the brand new device. All in all, Apple promises a new iPhone that feels great in your hand, and with those specifications, we don’t doubt that it will. Where to Sell Your iPhone 4S for the Most Money [IPhone]

Apple’s next iPhone is coming tomorrow. If you’re planning cashing in your old phone, you need to do it now. Here’s where to look for the best deal while there’s still some time left. More »

iPhone 5 called “biggest upgrade in consumer electronics history”

If you were looking to get pumped up about how gigantic the launch of the upcoming iPhone 5 device was going to be and you’ve got stock in Apple, you’ll be glad to hear what Topeka Capital analyst Brian White has to say this week. With what’s easily the highest target for APPL stock in the analyst universe, White has gone what Forbes calls “uber-bull” with $1,111 USD for what he says will likely be the “biggest upgrade in consumer electronics history.” The iPhone 5 is likely to be announced on the 12th of September (this Wednesday) and White has just about split his computer open typing furiously about how amazingly gigantic Apple’s launch of the smartphone will be.

White has made it clear that with the following set of factoids in place, the new iPhone will be more than just a giant launch, it’ll be a monumental launch. With this beast of an electronics event on Wednesday, Apple, he notes, might announce not just a blockbuster iPhone, but a set of other devices as well. Last year when the iPhone 4S was announced, he notes, it was a big event – here it’ll be one whole heck of a lot bigger. White’s notes go as follows:

• The iPhone 4S sold 1 million pre-orders in the first 24 hours – with the iPhone 5, White expects Apple to run through 1.3 to 1.5 million pre-orders in that same 24 hour period.

• With the iPhone 4S, 4 million units sold in the first three days of it being on sale. With the iPhone 5, White expects this number to move up between 5 and 5.5 million units.

• In the September quarter, White expects Apple to sell between 10 and 12 million iPhone 5 devices.

White also mentions several features that we’ve more or less seen come through in tips or in “leaked” photos here and there. First and perhaps most important is the price: White expects the price to stay the same as the current iPhone 4S. White also expects a great showcase for iOS 6, a faster processor under the hood of the iPhone 5, and a “modern unibody casing” of one kind or another. This new device, says White, will have a 4-inch display and will be about 15% thinner than the iPhone 4S, and it’ll be appearing with 4G LTE data speed.

There’s also a possibility, again, of there being more than one device revealed at the event this Wednesday. White mentions that new iPods and iMacs might be on display and that the rumored iPad mini, if it does indeed see the light of day, will much more likely be appearing later this year. It’s also noted by White that a China Mobile distribution deal as well as a possible Apple television may be in the works – eventually.

T-Mobile coaxing unlocked iPhone users to its network with Value Plan push, aggressive in-store service

T-Mobile coaxing unlocked iPhone users to its network with Value Plan push, aggressive in-store service

If, like T-Mobile, you’re one of the few major US networks that doesn’t carry the iPhone, there’s a few stages you have to go through. First comes the heavy-handed hints, then you pull a racy leather number from the wardrobe before declaring that you’re fine without it and never wanted the thing anyway. Now it’s hit stage four — throwing caution to the wind and inviting users to bring their unlocked handset into stores and sign up for its $70-a-month (amongst others) unlimited plan anyway. From September 12th, iPhone 4S display units will be rolled out in stores, with helpful sales staff around to swap out your AT&T microSIM for one of its own. You’ll also be able to get hold of network-specific apps like myAccount, Visual Voicemail and T-Mobile TV as soon as they’re ready. In order to make this marvel possible, it’s rolling out 1900MHz HSPA+ access to allow customers access to its “faux-G” service — which is one way of enticing you away from upgrading to whatever’s coming on Wednesday.

iPhone 5 (N42) model appears with 4S price points

This week a tip has appeared noting several details on the next-generation iPhone, specifically on its price – that being the same as the iPhone 4S is now – and the model number. This iPhone 5, as it’s currently being called, has been tipped to 9to5mac as being part of the iPhone N42 model line, this being the generation that does not work with NFC – this is in contrast the N41 model being tested earlier this year which has not made it to final production. The price structure of the iPhone 5 in model N42 is being shown as matching the current iPhone 4S in stores right this minute.

The configurations of the new iPhone 5 will likely be the same as the iPhone 4S in sizes of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB, while the prices will be as follows. Each of the code-names attaches to a color as well as an internal storage size: N42A-USA -$199, N42B-USA-$199, N42A-USA-$299, N42B-USA-$299, N42A-USA-$399, N42B-USA-$399. At the moment it appears that there will be two color combinations for the iPhone, that being black tones and white tones.

The pricing will more than likely bump the iPhone 4S back to the prices that the iPhone 3GS is currently at, while the 3GS will likely be axed from Apple’s stores altogether. Pre-orders for the iPhone 5 are being tipped to be taking place immediately after the announcement event (or at it) on September 12th, and shipping will start in the USA. The iPhone 5 will not ship to all countries immediately, so this same source says, but will be appearing in the USA first without a doubt.

Several accessories have also been tipped to be shipping at the same time as the iPhone 5, those being first and foremost an adapter for the smartphone to be able to work with previous-generation docking devices. Cases and and cables are also set to be popping up at the same time working with the iPhone 5 specifically. Have a peek at our iPhone 5 timeline below to see some key tips and leaks from the past few weeks, and stick to our Live Portal for the big event on September 12th!

iPhone keeps smartphone satisfaction crown; Builds lead over Android

Apple has taken the top spot for customer satisfaction in the latest J.D. Power survey, the company’s eighth successive win, and extending its lead over Android device manufacturers like HTC and Samsung. The iPhone maker scored 849 overall, up ten points over the last survey, and putting 59 points between it and second place holder HTC. The survey, which questions owners on their happiness with different aspects of the device ownership experience, found iPhone users were particularly pleased with the handset’s physical design.

That and ease of operation were cited most often, but J.D. Power says that the iPhone in fact scored strongly in all of the categories. That includes performance (weighted at 33-percent); physical design (23-percent); features (22-percent); and ease of operation (22-percent).

While HTC‘s recent sales have been underwhelming, actually satisfaction around the company’s phones puts the company in second place, with 790 points. Samsung comes in at third place, with 782 points, while Motorola and Nokia take fourth and fifth, with 777 and 763 respectively.

The study is all the more interesting, given Apple is believed to be preparing to reveal the new “iPhone 5” in just a week’s time. That event – which SlashGear will be liveblogging on September 12 from 10AM PT – is expected to see a new design of phone launched, with a larger touchscreen and the inclusion of 4G LTE connectivity.

Runat Japan announces a new Stitch and Toy Story Alien’s cases

A few weeks backs Runat Japan announces a new series of Disney iPhone4 and iPhone4s cases that includes two stunning yet largely un-usable a Stitch and Toy Story’s Alien design that will surely give a unique touch to your phone.
As you can see (Gallery below) these cases are quite bulky but at least they come with a nice little cradle and they will definitively discourage anyone to steal your phone unless of course the thief is a five year old addicted to Stitch!

iPhone 4S Dual Sim Card Case By thumbsUp!

The ability to tool two SIMs in a single smartphone is very enticing. If you are an iPhone 4S user and have two SIMs to use, it can be quite a hassle to interchange between them. Normally, it requires taking out the SIM and inserting the other SIM in its place.

A number of smartphones offer dual-SIM functionality. However, none of the iPhone devices have been on that list. While Apple doesn’t seem to have any plans of offering such a feature in the future either, thumbsUp! has now released a case which can be an alternative. (more…)
