iPhone 5 revealed as ‘world’s thinnest smartphone’

The iPhone 5 has officially arrived folks, and Apple is making some pretty big promises about it. The first is that it’s the “world’s thinnest smartphone.” In his announcement, Phil Schiller revealed that the iPhone 5 is 7.6mm thick, which is an 18% decrease in thickness over the iPhone 4S.

The iPhone 5 is pretty light too, weighing in at only 112 grams – that’s 20% lighter than the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 5 is the same width as the iPhone 4S is, but it’s a good amount taller. That change was made to accommodate the new screen, which measures in at 4-inches. That’s a pretty significant upgrade, considering that iPhone screens of the past have come in at 3.5-inches.

Of course, the iPhone 5 also features Retina Display, which will undoubtedly be a big selling point for the brand new device. All in all, Apple promises a new iPhone that feels great in your hand, and with those specifications, we don’t doubt that it will. Be sure to hit up our liveblog of Apple’s event for second-by-second updates, and check out our Apple portal for more in-depth coverage of the event!

Apple confirms iPhone 5 4G LTE carriers

It’s finally here, the iPhone 5! That isn’t all either as 4G LTE has officially been confirmed for the all new iPhone 5, as if we weren’t already expecting it. Apple has unveiled that their new flagship smartphone will indeed be powered by 4G LTE on multiple carriers here in the US, as well as many others across Canada and more. Check out the details below.

4G LTE for the US will include Verizon, AT&T, and of course Sprint, with T-Mobile no where to be seen. Canada will include folks from Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido, and Virgin Mobile. They are going fast here guys so stay with us. For Asia we can expect KDDI, KT, SmartTone and more. Then of course for Europe we’ll get EE which made tons of announcements yesterday (just in time) as well as DT. We’ll continue to update with addition details as they are made available.

Obviously we’ll have tons of additional details once things slow down here in Appleland but they’ve touted 8 hours of 4G LTE web browsing in terms of battery life. Sounds great right? More details can be found in the images below. Continue our coverage at live.slashgear.com

iOS 6 gets official debut on the iPhone 5: Maps, Passbook, iCloud Tabs and more

Now that the iPhone 5 is officially out of the bag, it’s time to talk software. Apple hasn’t exactly kept its cards close to its chest in regards to iOS 6: Cupertino teased the software at WWDC, letting us in on the direct Facebook integration, the new Maps application, Passbook and “Do Not Disturb” in the process. Today the OS gets official, and Scott Forstall demoed the software on the iPhone 5.

Not too much new here, but the software is out of its beta phase and ready to ship. One of the most hyped additions to iOS 6 has been the Maps application, which includes Siri navigation, 3D building view and satellite imagery. In Safari, there’s now a full-screen mode and you’ll be able to share tabs from your desktop with your phone (dubbed iCloud Tabs). We’re also seeing Passbook in action once again, bringing up a plane ticket at the lockscreen when you get to the airport, for example. One new thing here: Delta is confirmed as a partner for this digital ticket service.

As we’ve already known, on the Siri front you can bring up sports ranking and Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings via the voice assistant. And, of course, one of the most welcome new features is FaceTime over cellular — no mention of whether that will be supported on all carriers, but it certainly looks that way. iOS 6 will be available on September 19th (also when the iPhone 5 will go on sale), and it’s coming to the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch.

A6 chip introduced for iPhone 5 with fastest-ever performance

Apple has introduced the A6 chip for their next-generation iPhone 5 hardware this afternoon at the event which also showed off several more impressive bits of hardware and software enhancements. The iPhone 5′s A6 chip has been touted as having 2x faster CPU performance than the previous chip and brings on 2x the graphics performance as well. This chip has been shown as bringing on launches of apps at nearly 2x the speed as the previous iPhone on the whole.

With a launch of your Pages app, you’ll be going 2.1x the speed, with an opening of a Keynote app, 1.7x the speed. This device’s chip is also tuned to bring on the best gaming experience the iPhone has ever seen, EA coming to the stage this week to show off its graphics prowess. Tim Cook boasts Mountain Lion numbers at iPhone 5 event

Everyone may be waiting for Apple to reveal the iPhone 5 during today’s highly anticipated event, but before the reveals happen, Apple CEO Tim Cook took the stage to boast the latest numbers for the company’s products. Needless to say, if Tim Cook is bragging about them in front of a packed house, you can bet they’re pretty good.

Cook started with OS X Mountain Lion, saying that since its release, 7 million people have downloaded a copy. That makes Mountain Lion the fastest selling Apple release of all time, definitely something worth bragging about. The new MacBook Pro with Retina Display – which Apple says is the best Mac it has ever made – and the MacBook Air have been doing quite well too.

So well, in fact, that Apple says its notebooks are now in first place as far as US market share is concerned. To get specific, that’s a 27% market share for its notebooks, and Cook says that for the past 6 years straight, Mac has grown “significantly faster” than PC has. That definitely isn’t bad, and you can bet that Apple will look to keep that growth up with future Mac releases. Be sure to tune into our liveblog for up-to-the minute updates straight from Apple’s press event, and have a look at our Apple portal for more in-depth coverage!

Apple’s new iPhone 5 dock connector: It’s called Lightning and it’s 80 percent smaller, but the adapter is $29

Apple details new dock connector It's called Lightning

The new iPhone deserves a new dock connector. Say hello to the reversible, 80 percent smaller, Lightning. The likes of Bose, BLW and B&O are already working on new compatible docks while the new connector itself is now easier to connect, more durable, all digital, with an adaptive interface which warrants some closer inspection. Naturally, an adapter will also be made available for your existing iPhone peripherals, but if you have a number of devices to connect, it’s likely to put a hurt on your wallet — the adapter is now for sale in the Apple Store for a whopping $29. At least it’ll pair well with that Thunderbolt connection, right?

Apple: A6 chip in iPhone 5 has 2x CPU power, 2x graphics performance, yet consumes less energy

iPhone 5's A6 chip has 2x CPU power, 2x graphics performance, yet consumes less energy

Every new iPhone needs a new engine, and Tim Cook has just made some bold claims about Apple’s latest silicon creation: the A6 processor. He hinted at a significant shrinkage in transistor size, allowing the chip to be 22 percent smaller than the A5 and hence more energy-efficient, while at the same time — he says — doubling all-round CPU and graphics capabilities. By way of practical benefits, the Apple CEO promises the Pages app will load up 2.1x faster than before, while Keynote attachments will hit the screen 1.7x faster. At this point we’re lacking any further detail about cores or clock speeds or indeed who actually fabricated the A6 (still Samsung, after all that bitterness?), but Apple does tend to be close-lipped on such things. In the meantime, bring on the benchmarks!
