iPhone 5 mini dock appears in new shell photos

This afternoon the folks at iResQ have snapped a few photos of what appears to be the back shell of the next-generation iPhone ready for release next month by Apple. This device appears to be essentially the same thickness as the previous generation iPhone 4/4S, but a major change appears in the bottom end of the smartphone’s final build. Here it appears that a new generation of Apple mobile products may be born in a dock connector that is essentially 1/4 the size of the original 30-pin “iPod dock”.

This next-generation device has been tipped to have a 4-inch display, components that allow for a much bigger battery size than in previous models, and a new configuration at the top and bottom of the unit. The bottom of the device now appears to have two screws (as per the previous generation) but moves the headphone jack from the top of the device down to the bottom. The bottom of the device also utilizes individually drilled holes in the aluminum ring that surrounds the device rather than relying on separately attached grilles.

The photos shown here show what’s said to be the iPhone 5 (or whatever the next-generation iPhone’s final name will be) using the new “mini dock” which we’ve been hearing tips and rumors about for several months. Pictured here is an inside view as well as an outside view, showing that the connector’s size makes a major difference on the inside as far as size goes, with little space necessary for the far fewer pins this futuristic connector certainly requires. We’ve heard several different possibilities ranging from a 16-pin connector to a 9-pin to an 8-pin.

Those of you waiting for the new iPhone should prepare to purchase a converter accessory if you plan on using your previous generation accessories. Apple has been rumored to be making a low-cost converter device for its loyal consumers so that it might stay in the good graces of the massive amount of 3rd party accessory makers in the field today. This accessory may also be included in the box when users pick up a brand new iPhone 5 later this year.

Check out the timeline below to see what else has been rolling around the tip mill over the past few days and set your calendars for September 12th – that may well be the day!

New iPhone screen shown off in leaked pictures

We’re just a couple of weeks away from the rumored reveal of the new iPhone, and the leaks have been flooding in for some time now. Today we have yet another leak to share with you, this one supposedly showing off the 4-inch screen the iPhone will be sporting when it’s (hopefully) revealed next month. The images first popped up on UBreakiFix, and give us our first real glimpse at the new iPhone’s screen – assuming these are indeed picture of next generation iPhone components, of course.

If the rumors are true, then the screen on the new iPhone will come in at 4-inches diagonally, which is a pretty significant boost from the current models’ 3.5-inch screen. These new photos seem to confirm that, showing off a screen that could easily support a 16-by-9 aspect ratio, which Apple is supposedly pursuing with the new iPhone. Another photo, which you can see below, shows off the phone’s display connectors and serial number.

Given the sheer number of leaks we’ve experienced in the past few weeks, Apple’s next generation iPhone is either the worst-kept secret ever or it’s leading a number of people to just make stuff up. Both stand a pretty good chance at being true, but if the majority of these rumors are correct, then we’ll be seeing an iPhone that differs quite a bit from the models that came before it. The new iPhone could potentially bring the biggest shift in iPhone hardware since the device was first introduced back in 2007.

In order for that be true, however, then the rumors need to be true, and we won’t know if they are until Apple actually shows us the next iPhone. We’re hearing that Apple will do so at a still-unannounced event on September 12, with pre-orders going live that same day and the iPhone itself going on sale just over a week later on September 21. That means we’re now less than two weeks away from this reported iPhone reveal, so stay tuned, because things should picking up rather quickly.

Gazelle Will Give You Cash For Your iPhone Without Leaving You Phoneless For a Month [IPhone]

About half of iPhone users are having the “I want to sell my iPhone before the new one comes out but I don’t want to be phoneless for a month” dilemma right now. But there is a solution to that horrible first-world problem—Gazelle is giving out price locks and won’t make you fork over your phone until October 1. More »

First pictures of iPhone 5 display (Rumor)

The next generation iPhone, where many have dubbed it the iPhone 5 in the process, seemed to have its display leaked in a bunch of fresh photos, offering a glimpse at the alleged 4” display which has been touted by many to arrive on the new smartphone. The images that you see above do not seem to reveal too much since the unit remains unpowered, at least it is the first to show off the alleged larger display. It does seem as though the display’s connectors, which was shown in an additional close-up shot, do seem to point towards a layout that is not too different from its predecessor’s flex cables.

4” will certainly be larger than the current 3.5” display as found on the current generation iPhone, but then again, when you consider what we have on the Android front, 4” is relatively smaller by some. No idea on the final resolution count as well as pixel density of the next generation iPhone or iPhone 5, but I guess we will have to wait until later this year – most probably in September, to hear more about the new iPhone.

iPhone 5 rumors trigger highest Apple stock price ever

It appears that more than just the tip-addicted iOS fans out there are getting their fair share of iPhone 5 madness as Apple stock this week hits an all-time high. This is a big change compared to the week surrounding Apple’s recent quarterly earnings call where their slightly less-than-projected device sales numbers had investors “disappointed.” Now that we’re edging ever closer to what several independent sources have tipped as the announcement date for the new iPhone, investors are prepping for the biggest launch the company has ever seen with ever-increasing prices on Apple’s public offering.

One of the most indicative factors here is the move by Jefferies & Co. in raising their price target for the stock from $800 to $900 USD, while Apple’s valuation hits $600 billion in all. With Apple’s notoriously secret ways denying the public a perfect vision for the next-generation handheld smart device, the iPhone 5′s new cycle dominance is somewhat of a phenomenon. It’s no new hat though to Apple.

The Jeffries analyst responsible for the price upgrade earlier today, Peter Misek, described the product launch coming up quick as “the biggest handset launch in history.” With the supposed actual product launch landing before the end of September and each and every single rumor, tip, and supposed leak post here on SlashGear getting massive attention from readers, we can’t say we disagree. No matter what Apple reveals in the next-generation iPhone, it’s bound to make waves.

Apple analyst Gene Munster contributed to the fervor earlier this week with a projection that should Apple release a new iPhone 10 days before the end of September, they’d see sales to the tune of 26 million to 28 million devices sold by the end of the month. At the moment, Apple sits at the current numbers that are sure to make those who are currently holding stock in the company rather joyous:

• Profit margin: 26.97 percent
• Operating margin: 35.62 percent
• Return on equity: 44.32 percent
• Quarterly revenue growth (year-to-year): 22.6 percent
• Gross profit: $43.82 billion

Check the timeline below to see more information on the iPhone 5 – or whatever Apple ends up calling it – and also check out our portals for the iPad and the Apple TV to see what other rumors on Apple devices have been cropping up. With massive cults of rumor spreaders like Apple has now, it’s no wonder they need such heavy defenses, and no wonder why there’s such great anticipation for final product launches, too!

Leaked photo allegedly shows iPad Mini's dock connector flex cable with headphone jack on bottom

Granted, the existence of a 7-inch iPad mini is far from confirmed, but the latest “evidence” to fan those rumor flames is a photo of what appears to be a dock connector flex cable that connects the smaller dock connector, headphone jack and home button connector. The photo appeared on the site Nowhereelse.fr, which also recently published photos that purportedly show the next-gen iPhone’s tiny docking connector. Other reports have indicated that the iPad mini’s headphone jack will be located on the top of the device (as it is on the current version of the tablet) as opposed to on the bottom, which would contradict this latest leaked photo, but this new layout corresponds to rumors about the iPhone 5. The one semblance of certainty in all this? iFixit‘s Kyle Wiens weighed in to say that the component “is consistent” with Apple parts.

iPhone 5 premium tickets from Deutsche Telekom?

As Deutsche Telekom (the German carrier behind T-Mobile) issues “premium tickets” to kick start the virtual line-up to buy an upcoming smartphone, customers can only imagine one event: the iPhone 5 launch. This is because the German carrier has done exactly the same thing for the iPhone 4S last year, so most people are willing to bet that this is it – these are the tickets to get the next iPhone.

Those using the premium tickets are supposed to get the first deliveries because those are made following the exact tickets numerical order.

Of course, this is a remote concern for United States customers, but wouldn’t it be interesting if US wireless carriers had something like this? That way, we may be able to avoid the server overload and all the things that can happen during such a rush. If you are really curious, check the DT website (in German).

iPhone 5 LTE confirmed by Korean mobile carriers

This week it appears that the Korean mobile data carrier KT may have spilled the beans a bit early as they’ve been quoted speaking about the next-generation iPhone by the Korea Times. According to that publication, a senior KT executive spoke on the very near future of their Apple collaboration: “KT is in negotiation with Apple to persuade the latter to support KT’s 1.8-gigahertz frequency in Korea for the upcoming iPhone.” This of course means Korea’s 4G LTE frequencies will be in play – and that it’s likely the USA will be connected with this data speed as well.

While Korea uses the massively speedy 1.8-gigatertz frequency (with KT, anyway) for LTE, back in the United States we’ve got a couple of different solutions. AT&T uses both 700MHz and 2.1GHz while Verizon uses just 700MHz. The Korea Times noted that Korea’s SK Telecom had confirmed with them that they’d be getting the next-generation iPhone with 4G LTE connectivity as well.

Each different frequency here requires that Apple create a different hardware build for the iPhone at this moment in history, with several different models of the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S existing already in the USA. Other details on the iPhone have been scant as far as official word from the manufacturer, but tips have been falling down like rain. Rumors on the device include a release date of September 21st and an announcement date of September 12th, both dates having been “revealed”, so to speak, earlier this month.

The next-generation iPhone will likely have a 4-inch display, a thinner body, and an advanced processor under the hood. Expect this device to bring with it a brand new dock connector, quicker wired connections, and the full version of iOS 6. Also expect it to herald lower prices for the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, too. Check out the timeline below to see more iPhone action from the past couple of weeks!

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 14, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday, folks. It was a busy day today, and there’s plenty of news to cover, so let’s get right into it. It appears that the worldwide mobile phone market is falling a little bit year-over-year, and the Motorola DROID RAZR HD might be launching sometime in October. Fisker is currently at work investigating the fire that claimed one Karma EV over the weekend, and we received word of another EV catching fire during the Pikes Peak Hill Climb that took place in Colorado this past weekend as well.

A new Apple patent was uncovered today, just in time for the rumored reveal of the new iPhone, and Groupon has released its financial report for quarter 2. It seems that Toshiba is backing out of the Windows RT tablet market, and the Samsung SGH-T899 Windows Phone was confirmed to be heading to T-Mobile. We also reminded you check in with us here at SlashGear tomorrow for coverage of Samsung’s press event, which is where many are expecting the company to show off the Galaxy Note 10.1. In other words, you don’t want to miss it.

It was all about tech and gadgets in the morning, but this afternoon, SlashGear became SlashGames, as Electronic Arts and Sony both gave their pre-Gamescom press conferences. There were a lot of things to talk about too, with Electronic Arts announcing Battlefield 3 Premium Edition and letting loose Dead Space 3‘s release date. Registration for the upcoming SimCity beta is underway, Activision gave us our first taste of Black Ops Declassified gameplay, and Sony pulled the veil back on some new PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale characters. That wasn’t all though, as Sony also gave us a release date for the first PSOne Classics on PS Vita during the press conference, and gave us the first trailer for Guerrilla’s upcoming Killzone: Mercenary.

We were thinking for a little while that Valve would reveal Half-Life 3 during Gamescom, but the studio was quick to quash those rumors, and Sony announced a new PlayStation Mobile initiative for iOS and Android, so keep an eye out for that. One very brave thief tried to steal $60,000 worth of computers from Steve Jobs’ home, but was unsuccessful in his efforts, and new rumors are telling us that Apple has been forced to lay off some its Apple Store employees in the UK. The Acer TravelMate P243 notebook PC was revealed today, complete with Intel’s Ivy Bridge microarchitecture, and the Samsung Galaxy S III might be getting an update to Jelly Bean toward the end of the month. Finally tonight, RIM says that BlackBerry 10 will be ready for licensing soon, and the Curiosity rover sent back another image for that massive 130-picture panorama of the surface of Mars. Be sure to give that a look.

That does it for today’s evening wrap-up, so go out and enjoy the rest of your evening!
