Apple in-cell touch patent set for iPhone 5

This week a new Apple patent has been revealed just in time for the iPhone 5 – or new iPhone – or whatever you want to call it, complete with in-cell touch display tech. This new technology will allow Apple to work with a significantly thinner display in the next generation of their mobile devices, this allowing for bigger batteries or thinner devices overall. This patent shows how the LCD and touch recognition hardware can be integrated into one unit instead of two, combining them for the thinnest solution for smartphones and tablets yet.

This technology will not only allow Apple to slim down the amount of hardware they need to make a device, it’ll also lessen the cost of the final unit. Here Apple will do one of two things. The first could be Apple having electrodes both working with display duties and allowing touch input. The second is taking the same two electrodes needed now and pushing them into one pixel.

This patent was filed all the way back in 2007 before the first iPhone was revealed. The patent process can take this long on a regular basis, with patents sitting in limbo for several years before they’re finally granted. This patent took, believe it or not, five years to make it to its final granted stage.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see other recent new iPhone news for more clues as to what we’ll be seeing this year. We’re expecting that September 12th will be the day for the reveal of the next iPhone while later that month we’ll see shipments – it’s all in the tips thus far!

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: August 13, 2012

Another Monday is in the bag folks, so give yourselves a pat on the back. We’re starting things off tonight by having a look at the latest iPhone rumors. Current whispers are telling us that pre-orders for the next iPhone will become available on September 12 – the same day that Apple is expected to reveal it – and that it’ll become available at AT&T later on in the month. We also caught a glimpse of the reported logic board in the next iPhone, and it seems that this new logic board is leaving room for a larger battery and LTE capabilities.

In other news, one of Apple’s studies claims that people buy Android phones largely out of a feeling of loyalty to their carrier, and it seems that the iPhone maker licensed out patents to Microsoft while Samsung declined to bite. Fisker has made a new statement about the Karma that spontaneously caught fire in California this past weekend, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 was given a release date in the UK. RIM is looking to get rid of NewBay as it seeks fast cash while BlackBerry 10 development continues, and Samsung has announced that a new black Galaxy S III is coming soon.

Sad news for Nintendo fans living in Europe today, as Nintendo pushed the Wii U’s release date back to December. We had a couple pieces of news about Motorola today, some of it good, some of it not so much. The Motorola PHOTON Q 4G LTE is releasing on August 19, but Motorola Mobility announced today that it will be laying off 20% of its workforce. Electronic Arts is eyeing Windows Phone 8, and Amazon is looking to capitalize on the back to school frenzy by putting its tablets on clearance.

Researchers at the University of Warwick have come up with a way of making fat-free chocolate that apparently tastes like the real deal (yes, really), and President Barack Obama shared some words of encouragement with the NASA Curiosity team earlier this morning. He even promised continued support for what NASA is doing, and that is definitely a good thing. Speaking of space, it seems that the Google Earth satellites have discovered something very interesting: additional Egyptian pyramids. The ARM-based IdeaPad Yoga has been revealed as Lenovo’s Windows RT tablet, and it would seem that the LG Optimus Vu is arriving in the United States before the end of September.

The Neo Geo is getting another shot at life with the Neo Geo X Gold, the Steam Community is about to undergo a makeover, and App.net hit its crowd-funding goal with just two days left to go. That does it for the day’s news, but be sure to check out this freshly-posted review of the Lenovo IdeaCentre A720 by Chris Burns. Enjoy the rest of the evening, everyone!

iPhone 5 pre-orders tipped for September 12

This week it’s been revealed that Apple is planning on having the new iPhone (aka iPhone 5) shipped by September 21st, 2012, with pre-orders beginning September 12th, the same day we’ve heard the Apple event for the device will take place. With the iPhone 5 hot on everyone’s mind with a possible announcement date being just a few weeks away, every detail counts, especially one that also notes that a second round of shipments – that being the regular orders for the device, starting on October 5th.

This tip comes from sources speaking with iMore, sources they say have been accurate about Apple iPhone release dates in the past. This same informant has let it be known that the “second wave” will also be the one to hit international markets. At the moment the precise international markets this wave will be coming to is not known.

Compared to the best-selling iPhone 4S, these ship dates would be even more intense than they’ve been in the past. While the iPhone 4S was announced on October 4th of last year, pre-orders didn’t come until the 7th of that month. The first round of releases was then October 14th and the second was the 28th, all of these still in October. With the iPhone 5 – or The New iPhone if you like – Apple will bring the device on so quick you wont have time to decide if you actually want it or not – you’ll have to buy it!

As iMore mentions as well, if the company also does announce an iPad mini as well as a refreshed iPad (full size) with new docking ports, this will indeed be one of the most intense schedules Apple will have ever undertaken. You might want to start saving up your lunch money now, ladies and gentlemen, it’s very potentially about to get very intense out there in gadgetland!

iPhone 5 motherboard suggests LTE and battery boost

This week the motherboard for the new iPhone appears to have been photographed and leaked by a relatively anonymous source who also suggests a larger battery and LTE connectivity for the device. The user is a forum member from Weiphone previously leaked images of the motherboard for a new iPhone last year – that motherboard turned out to belong to the iPhone 4S. With this new and improved piece of hardware popping up today, several conclusions can be drawn should be be supposed that it’s real.

There’s been a comparison made to the also-supposed rear plate of the next iPhone and NWE has decided that it fits. With the size, shape, and suggestions that have been included with this piece of hardware, we can safely assume that we’ll have 4G LTE connectivity and that there will be a larger battery than we’ve seen in past iPhone models. This device also likely has a smaller SIM card holder, as you may know from past leaked pieces of hardware, and the entire device is significantly larger than previous iPhones as well.

The next iPhone, called iPhone 5 here before it’s officially announced by Apple, will likely have a 4-inch display, a brand new dock connector with 8 (or 16) pins on it, and the headphone jack sits at the bottom of the device rather than the top. This new iPhone has been tipped as being announced on the 12th of September and the release date has been “leaked” this morning as inside the last week of September – for AT&T at least.

This device will likely also be released on Verizon on their 4G LTE network and will be released simultaneously on each of the carriers Apple has agreed to release it with. Check the timeline below for the most recent of iPhone 5 rumors and tips, and check the new iPhone portal to see all of the new iPhone news we’ve had since the beginning of this new cycle.

iPhone 5 launch date tipped for AT&T: late September

This morning it appears that at least one anonymous yet reliable source is reporting that the AT&T version of the new iPhone (aka the iPhone 5) will be the third or fourth week of September. This tip comes from a person in the know speaking with BGR so we cannot wholly guarantee that this time span is a fix, but given the rumored announcement date of the device, it does seem likely. The announcement date for the iPhone 5 has been reported by several sources close to the matter as being September 12th.

This device is also being tipped as having AT&T put an “all hands on deck” order down for the last couple of weeks in September and throughout October as well. Another AT&T source speaking with BGR noted that a “huge” training event for regional employees that was once set for the first week in October has now been pushed to a later date due to a conflict. The conflict, they say, is a “huge announcement” which we must assume is the release of the new iPhone.

This device will likely be announced as Apple’s newest hero smartphone working with iOS 6 and in stores near the end of September. Along with this device will possibly be announced a new size of iPad, that being the fabled “iPad mini” with a 7-inch display. Both of these devices, if they both appear or not, will quite likely be carrying a brand new dock connector with 8 pins rather than the current 30 as you’ve been using on your iPad, iPhone, and iPod devices since they were first released.

Feel free to have a peek at the rest of our iPhone 5 (or The New iPhone, if you wish) in our new iPhone portal. Also check out the timeline below for extended bits of information on the device as they’ve popped up most recently in our main news feed. And get prepped for the next generation of Apple mobile device!

iPhone Prices Drop Everywhere Before New iPhone Launch [Iphone 5]

Just about everyone is slashing prices on the iPhone ahead of next month’s expected release of the sixth-gen version. More »

The unibody iPhone

This could be one of four things

1. A very elaborate hoax. If it’s a hoax, kudos to whoever made it because it would require the same amount of design and engineering effort that would go into an actual smartphone. Not to mention all of the collaboration that would have been needed between the numerous different sites that have posted images and video already. That’s an insane amount of work for a laugh, so I don’t think it’s a hoax.

2. A decoy made by Apple to throw everyone off the scent and root out leaks. Now THAT would be amazing. I’m secretly rooting for this option if only because it would be so diabolically awesome.

3. An early model or sample of a design that Apple is working on. Maybe, but we have seen this same design pop up in too many places and it looks way too far along in development to be a model or early sample.

4. An actual production sample of the next iPhone. This is where I would put my money. I’m fairly convinced this is what the next iPhone will look like. If true, this design will be noteworthy for being the first unibody iPhone, making it the thinnest, strongest, and lightest housing to date. (more…)

Photos of claimed iPhone 5 logic board hit the web

Rumors about the new iPhone 5 continue to swirl as we build up to what is believed to be a September 12 launch event for the new Apple smartphone. These are photographs of the logic board come from a Chinese forum called Weiphone. The logic board is the section of the smartphone that holds the processor and other chips the device uses.

While logic boards for older versions of the iPhone aren’t offered side-by-side, the design of the logic board shown in these photographs, and rumored to be for the iPhone 5, is different from those used for the iPhone 4S and 4. Interestingly, another website called Nowhereelse is claiming that the screw holes in the logic board line up perfectly with previously leaked images claiming to show the back panel for the iPhone 5. The rumors are certainly starting at up to a decent overall understanding of the iPhone 5.

We’ve seen quite a few images hit the Internet that are supposed to be parts of the iPhone 5. This happened in previous years with current versions of the iPhone as well. Leaked images of the iPhone 4S logic board turned up prior to that smartphones launch revealing the fact that it would use an A5 processor.

Since the logic board we see in these photos has shielding in place, it’s difficult to tell exactly what processor and other chips might be hidden underneath. It’s also worth noting that the person who leaked these photographs of the iPhone 5 logic board is the same person who leaked those photographs of the 4S board last year that turned out to be accurate.

Alleged New iPhone Logic Board Hints at Antenna and Battery Tweaks [Rumors]

As iPhone rumors develop apace, a WeiPhone forum user—who accurately revealed the iPhone 4S’s motherboard last year—has leaked images of what he claims is the logic board of the new iPhone. More »

iPhone 5 logic board leaked [rumor]

Here is the latest scoop about the iPhone 5, where it deals with an image of the iPhone 5 logic board. After all, we have seen alleged images of its SIM tray, including the back shell and possible front panel already, not to mention talk about a 9-pin dock connector, so why not expand the merry family’s range to touch on something more intimate – like the logic board of the next generation iPhone? According to 9to5Mac, the latest logic board leak is not an exact carbon copy of the iPhone 4S’ logic board, where it comes with a smaller SIM slot this time around in addition to additional wireless antenna connections.

While these new wireless antenna connections do not necessarily indicate 4G LTE connectivity, it does mean that Apple wants to move forward from where the iPhone 4S left off. We do look forward to hear and perhaps, see more of the iPhone 5′s innards in the weeks to come – will there be a major bump in the speed of its processor, or just a minor improvement? One thing’s for sure, Apple cannot really keep things close to their chest anymore these days as they are too reliant on 3rd party suppliers for their parts.
