iPhone 5 battery leaked?

We all know by now that the world is soon going to plunge itself into the iPhone 5 mania – or perhaps if Apple were to follow the new iPad’s naming convention, the next generation iPhone could very well be called the “new iPhone” for all we know. Still, there has been plenty of rumors surrounding the upcoming iPhone recently, ranging from the different number of pins in its connector to the display size that is more or less going to be larger – not to mention carry a higher resolution count. Well, today we have a new battery shot which was allegedly leaked out for the iPhone 5, where the grain of salt that you swallow with this bit of news might also result in a higher capacity battery for the new iPhone. It goes without saying though, should the alleged iPhone 5 battery run at 1440mAh, which is higher compared to its predecessor, the iPhone 4S, there is nothing much to shout for joy for considering the larger display size on the new iPhone, in addition to potential battery-draining 4G LTE capabilities. Is This Apple’s New iPhone Dock Connector? [Rumor]

Could this be Apple’s new iPhone connector? Except for the fact that French site Nowhereelse has a terribly poor reputation, I don’t see why not. They seem real parts, not photoshopped, and the size seems to be the right one. More »

New iPhone mini docking connector photographed

It appears that a group of intrepid undercover photo-takers in France have taken some snaps of the iPhone 5′s docking connector in all of its 8-pin glory. This little pin is set to replace the 30-pin connector we’re used to on the iPad, iPhone, and all manner of iPods as well. It’s over at Nowhere Else that these images originate, they adding another piece to the ever-clearer puzzle of parts that make up the next iPhone here just a possible set of weeks before its launch.

What we’re seeing here is that this lovely little connector may be two-sided, that meaning that it’s got pins not just on the one side as previous connectors have had. These bits (or the two on the right, at least) show the part that pushes in to the iPhone (aka the male end of the connection.) It’s also been tipped that there’s going to be at least one official converter plug so that legacy accessories may be used once the new iPhone is released.

It’s also been tipped that the new iPhone will be just one of the whole line of Apple mobile devices to be working with a new generation of ports. With this new port comes more room inside the device and, we must assume, more room for an LTE radio. Of course there’s also going to be more room for battery space as well – more time with no charging for us!

Have a peek at the iPhone 5 timeline below to see all the updates from the past week or so on tips, leaks, and all manner of rumors leading up to the final release. We’re currently expecting the next iPhone to be announced on the 12th of September – but that’s also only a rumor, so sit tight! Also feel free to hit up our iPhone 5 portal to see everything that’s run up on us over the last few months!

Next iPhone’s tiny docking connector possibly spotted (update: more details)

Next iPhone's tiny docking cable possibly seen, might help complete the puzzle

We’ve seen the rumored next iPhone’s minuscule docking port more than once. Any of the cabling that plugs into that port, however, has been non-existent until today. If photos slipped to Nowhereelse.fr are more than just flights of fancy, they show a much narrower and possibly slimmer connector that matches up with the hole we’ve seen. It’s so small that a full-size USB connector dwarfs it by comparison, and there’s only eight contact pins per side (or possibly total) versus the 30 overall that we know today. We’re not told if there are any special tricks besides the size reduction, though: while the new cable end looks dual-sided, there’s no guarantee Apple will have eliminated the right-side-up requirement that afflicts just about every mobile-sized port format we’ve seen to date. If real, the redesign could lead to one less hassle for charging and syncing. It just wouldn’t be much consolation to those who’d been hoping for a switch to a standard like micro-USB — or, for that matter, to long-time iPhone owners who may have to give up or convert legions of accessories.

Update: since we first posted, the rumor has fleshed out a bit. It’s claimed that there are eight pins on both sides, but that they perform different functions and might not let us plug the connector in any which way. Supposedly, the connectors also aren’t the final models and reflect the problems the unnamed contractor has had meeting Apple’s standards. Don’t worry about claims of future iPads leaping to the new connector: if there’s really a format switch underway, it’s only natural that other devices will follow suit.

Why a Two-Tone Unibody iPhone Makes Perfect Sense [New IPhone]

There’s been much speculation that Apple’s next iPhone will come with a unibody, two-tone design, a significant departure for the company. But fewer people have bothered to ask why. Industrial designer Don Lehman does here for The Tech Block—and comes up with some convincing answers. More »

"Leaked" iPhone 5 Battery Seems Really Small [Rumor]

9to5mac has reported images of the next iPhone’s battery, and if they’re to be believed, the battery’s relatively small size could spell problems for battery life if the new iPhone has LTE. More »

iPhone 5 Battery Images Leak: Only Slighter Larger Than iPhone 4S Battery, Despite Expected LTE

Screen shot 2012-08-10 at 9.38.59 AM

In the blogosphere’s continuing quest to assemble a virtual iPhone 5 before Apple unveils a real one in September, 9to5Mac has published images of what appears to be the next iPhone’s battery. Juicy stuff!

As expected, the battery is a bit larger than the last iPhone, but not by much. It jumps from 1430mAh in the iPhone 4S (up from 1420mAh in the iPhone 4) to a 1440 mAh battery. With the expected inclusion of LTE, plus Apple’s turn-by-turn mapping (which is a huge battery drain, at least in iOS 6 beta), we must simply hope that Apple’s dual-core SoC will use this relatively limited power source efficiently.

According to the label on the battery pack, it was created in June of this year, which is right in line with Apple’s iPhone 5 timing.

So what else can we expect in Apple’s next-gen iPhone? For one, a larger 4-inch display at a resolution of 1,136 x 640, along with a new two-tone back panel. You’ll also see a much smaller connector dock along the bottom, as Apple is allegedly replacing the worn out 30-pin dock Apple’s used for so long in its iThings with a 19-pin mini dock.

Of course, iOS 6 will ship with the device.

Alleged battery for next iPhone surfaces

Yesterday we saw the internal sensors and parts of the next iPhone laid out for all to see, and now 9to5Mac has its hands on what it believes to be a battery for Apple’s next smartphone. The capacity of the battery has been increased to 1,440mAh, up from the 1,430mAh rating used for the iPhone 4S. The voltage of the battery is also up from previous Apple smartphones, jumping to 3.8, up from 3.7.

The watt-per-hour measurement also increases a result to 5.45wHr, up from 5.3wHr on the iPhone 4S. The battery is definitely a recent creation too, with labelling indicating it was manufactured in June 2012. The small capacity bump is curious considering rumors that the next handset will feature power intensive features such as LTE.

Not only that, but the screen will also reportedly see an increase to 4-inches, with a resolution bump to 1136×640. A larger screen inevitably draws more power, and while LTE chips are becoming more efficient, 4G data transfer still drains batteries faster than 3G. The part might not be destined for the next iPhone, and could simply be an updated battery to be used in the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

9to5Mac believes, however, that Apple will be using a more efficient dual-core chip that would negate the need for a significantly larger battery. Not only that, but the company could make use of Qualcomm’s new Gobi LTE chip, which requires much less power than existing LTE solutions. There’s not long until we find out either way, with the company allegedly penciling in a September 12th reveal and September 21st ship date.

iOS 6 screenshots on iPhone 5 part deux

We do know that the self-proclaimed “world’s most advanced mobile operating system” is about to get bumped up even further the echelon with the arrival of the iPhone 5 (or next generation iPhone, depending on just what you want to call it), and iOS 6 is its name. Apart from some changes that folks might not jive with, it is nearly certain that iOS 6 will run nicely on the higher resolution and subsequently, larger display of the iPhone 5 compared to the smartphone’s predecessors, meaning the user interface will hum along at a resolution of 640 x 1136.

More screenshots of iOS 6 running on the next generation iPhone has surfaced, and it is rather interesting to note that applications built with the Apple-built user-interface elements, including TableViews (which is somewhat similar to a contact list or contact card) will scale themselves automatically on the newer, more generous display. It remains to be seen, however, taht third-party apps constructed using such user interface elements will run peachy keen on the new iPhone sans developer input.

Next iPhone internals laid bare

Case parts for the next iPhone continue to leak out of China, with the latest pictures revealing internal sensors as well as a part that may serve to protect the back of the rumored 4-inch screen. The latest collection of parts, courtesy of iColorOS, shows off some titillating internal components, such as the volume rocker and protective shielding that separates the back of the iPhone’s screen from the internals.

Several other parts also make an appearance, such as the home button and smaller SIM card tray. Just the other day we saw close up pictures of the next iPhone’s smaller SIM card tray. The reduced size of the tray points to Apple using the new nano-SIM standard, approved by the ETSI at the beginning of June despite objections from Motorola, RIM, and Nokia.

Recent reports have suggested that European carriers are stockpiling supplies of nano-SIMs in order to accommodate demand for the next iPhone when it’s released. Carrier sources located in the United States have also confirmed this to be the case, indicating that the next iPhone will most likely use nano-SIMs as opposed to the micro-SIMs currently used in the iPhone 4 and 4S.

Constant leaks and reports all point towards a larger 4-inch screen being used for the next iPhone, with Apple also rumored to increase the resolution from 960×640 to 1136×640, also marking a shift in aspect ratio to 16:9. Case parts suggest that the next iPhone would use a two-tone metallic design, with machine drilled speaker holes and a relocated 3.5mm headphone jack. The handset has also been tipped to include LTE connectivity and NFC support. The phone is expected to be announced on September 12th.
