New iPhone gets 7.6mm thin at China report

The iPhone has been evolving ever so slightly in the relatively short time it’s been available on the market, and with the release of the iPhone 5, we’re seeing details such as a brand new 7.6mm thickness being worthy of a full report. When you’ve got a smartphone out on the market that is, without a doubt, the most omnipotent of them all, even the tiniest of details can rattle the press cages as a mighty wind. The news today was snapped by Apple.Pro from Chinese newspaper Apple Daily which appears to have an in-person report of the new iPhone, whatever that means, and the amount of thickness that has been shaved off of its body.

This new iPhone will almost certainly be the same amount of thickness across its entire person, as each of the iPhones of the past have been, so no worries about this thickness being thinner or fatter in places along the phone. It’s 1.7mm thinner than the iPhone 4S, that being not quite as thin as the thinnest point on the Motorola DROID RAZR (which is 7.1mm at its thinnest point). Of course the thinnest smartphone in the world today is still the ZTE Athena at just 6.2mm – not likely to be beat by any sensible manufacturer any time soon.

Now why on earth would Apple want to make its hero device even thinner than it already is? Perhaps they’ve discovered some fantastic method for reinforcing the body of the device that far outweighs the risk of snapping such a thin device in half! We can only guess that either Apple has mad some major advances in their ability smash the battery for the device down to a smaller size – or that this rumor is just that, just a rumor.

New iPhone display size locks in-step with iOS 6

Developers having a peek at the newest build of iOS 6 have discovered a clue leading us to believe we’ve seen the first real vision of the HD display for the next iPhone, that being a rather tall 640 x 1136 pixel resolution. This set of numbers comes from the test build for iOS 6 which shows the possibility for such a build in a simulation done by 9to5mac. What they’ve done is essentially stretch out the display in a simulator to the proposed proportions and – poof – everything appears to fall right into place.

What you’re seeing above is a rendering of the next iPhone as done by the folks at NWE while below you’re seeing two screens in simulation mode in iOS 6.0 and iOS 5.1. The display on the left and the display on the right both have the same dimensions, but while the current build of iOS on the market today – iOS 5.1 – shows a slightly unflattering set of black rows sitting between icon sets, the iOS 6 build immediately has the icons locked in step with the lovely equidistant app arrangement we’ve grown used to.

In the iPhone that’s currently on the market, there are four rows of icons above the dock. In this new build of iOS with a display that’s as tall as what’s been suggested in the code found in iOS 6 for the new iPhone, there are five rows of icons besides the dock. This plays right in-step with the idea that Apple does not want to radically change the way their device functions or how users interact with it, opting rather for an enlarged bit of hardware without a giant UI switch.

Have a peek at the timeline we’ve got below to check on other recent iPhone 5 findings – or “The New iPhone”, if you prefer – and stick around on SlashGear to keep the wave flying inward. Also note that we’ve got a New iPhone portal for you to ride the curl on in with as well. Let us know if you think the new iPhone will look like what’s suggested above, or if it’s all a bunch of smoke and mirrors for real!

The next iPhone’s nano-SIM cradle allegedly leaked

The next iPhone's nanoSIM cradle allegedly leaked

Rumors about the new iPhone have basically everything but the screen shrinking. That includes the SIM card and its ejectable drawer. French site NoWhereElse scored some photos of what it claims is the new tray, alongside the 4S version for comparison. As you can clearly see, the new SIM slot is narrower and the insert has a slightly different cosmetic design. If the part turns out to be legit, it will hardly come as a surprise. Apple made a big push for a nano-SIM standard to be adopted over competing designs from Nokia, RIM and Motorola. If the rumors and Cupertino’s reliable refresh schedule hold up, you wont have to wait long to find out for sure. The next iPhone is expected to be announced next month. Hit up the source link for a few more photos.

Next iPhone’s nano-SIM tray poses for its closeup

Current reports indicate that the next iPhone is due to be unveiled on September 12th, and will ship into customers hands roughly 9 days later. Various case parts and specifications for the handset have emerged over the past few months, with new pictures showing off an alleged SIM card tray for the phone. As has been alluded to in the past, the new SIM card tray will make use of the recently approved nano-SIM standard, with comparison pictures showing the new tray next to the tray used for the iPhone 4S courtesy of nowhereelse.fr.

Apple’s motives for using a small SIM card standard are simple: the company is trying to save as much space possible inside the device. That can lead to additional components, or more room for a larger battery. The ETSI approved Apple’s nano-SIM card standard at the end of May, leading to speculation that the reduced size SIM would be used in the next iPhone. Rumors have also indicated that Apple had already designed the next iPhone around its own nano-SIM standard despite it not yet being finalized, shedding new light on the standards competition between itself and companies like Motorola, RIM, and Nokia.

More recently, the Wall Street Journal reported that European carriers were beginning to stockpile nano-SIM supplies ahead of the next iPhone launch, with BGR confirming with other carrier sources that nano-SIMs would definitely be used for the next iPhone. Nano-SIMs are said to be around 40% smaller than current micro-SIMs. It may not seem like a lot at that scale, but companies are always trying to find a way to cram new technologies into today’s smartphones without compromising on thickness and battery life: every little bit really does help.

As for the next iPhone, reports have suggested that Apple will increase the screen size to 4-inches, up from 3.5-inches. The resolution of the screen will see a bump to 1136×640, also changing the aspect ratio of the display to 16:9. Leaked case parts have suggested a two-tone aluminium back for the next iPhone, along with a repositioned 3.5mm headphone jack and machined drilled speaker and microphone holes. A new 19-pin has also been tipped to replace the standard 30-pin dock connector, but more recent reports have suggested that the smaller connector will in fact be 8-pins.

Mini dock connector adapter spotted in Apple’s online store, according to video [Rumor]

Last week we reported on the rumor that instead of the next-gen iPhone sporting a smaller 19-pin dock connector, it would now instead feature an even smaller dock connector with 8-pins. Whether that is real remains to be seen although thanks to a recent video, it shows a user navigating to a page in Apple’s online store where a mini-dock to dock connector adapter was shown. Now it has been suggested in the past that if the mini-dock connectors were true, Apple was expected to offer a convertor which should help with the transition and offer continued support for third-party accessory makers (assuming it fits, of course). This is why an adapter isn’t exactly a stretch of the imagination. Of course it is more than likely that this video is a fake, but what do you guys think? We have been fooled by some pretty realistic renderings in the past, so if video was indeed a fake, we wouldn’t exactly be surprised either.

iPhone 5 photo leak could be a red herring

The jury is still out on this one – the photos of an alleged iPhone 5 (or next generation iPhone, depending on just how you want to call it) that you see above could be true, or it could be false. All we know is this, a Japanese repair house uploaded images of what resembled the upcoming iPhone from Apple some time ago, and it did send everyone into an iPhone 5 search frenzy. Now, Neowin claimed to have received images from an anonymous source in Bangkok, Thailand, of the possible next generation iPhone. Nothing is confirmed yet of course, and the source of the photos did admit that this particular iPhone captured does not work at all, and is a “non functional replica prototype.” Can we say dummy unit? Do you think that this will be the basis for the next generation iPhone? It would be cool if we could take a closer look at the dock connector, hoping to see 8-pins or 19-pins in the process.
