Tim Cook speaks up regarding product rumors and speculation

Rumors and speculation of upcoming products is practically tradition for almost every industry, i.e. cars, technology, and etc. Given that it is about that time of the year, we guess you guys have probably realized that iPhone rumors have standard to run rampant, with alleged leaked photos of components, speculated release dates, features and the likes. While they do a good job of hyping up consumers, sometimes these rumors fall flat on their face and ultimately causes disappointment. For example last year many had expected the iPhone 4S to undergo a major redesign. Instead we were given a rehash of the iPhone 4 with slightly upgraded hardware. (more…)

New iPhone cases confirm smaller 19-pin dock connector and 4″ display?

iPhone 5 caseBack when the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S was going to be released, there were plenty of case leaks that helped us to speculate about what sort of features the tablet would have, and what it was going to look like. Well, it looks like that will be the case for the next generation iPhone as well. We’ve previously heard rumors about how the screen is going to be larger and that it’s going to have a different dock connector. While we can’t confirm those features personally, the folks over at MobileFun seem to think they can.

They’ve received images of alleged iPhone 5 cases that are said to protect a taller iPhone with a 4″ display. While I can’t tell from the images, the cases are also said to have room for a smaller 19 pin connector as well as w relocated headphone jack. Just like with the iPhone 4S, you can’t really trust photographs of cases out there. Anyhow, take this news with a pinch of salt and hold on to your hats – all shall be revealed in due time.

New iPhone 5 cases appear in UK with 4-inch display

Those of you looking for more clues as to what the new iPhone will look like when it’s revealed later this year will be glad to see another set of cases full of clues popping up today. What we’re seeing here, courtesy of Mobile Fun UK’s secret sources, is a set of iPhone 5 (or whatever the New iPhone will be called) case images that point toward many of the elements we’ve been seeing the past few weeks. If these cases are correct, we’ll again have the same width device that’s taller and has a headphone jack at the bottom rather than the top – and the display will be 4-inches, too.

This device will likely work with the rumored 19-pin dock port at its bottom that up until now has been a much more massive 30-pin port. This device will have volume buttons and a screen lock up on the left, a camera with a single LED flash on the back, and it’ll have a very similar aesthetic overall compared to the iPhone 4/4S.

The cases we’re seeing here have kickstands, they’ve got hardcore backs and sides, and they’re certainly very nice looking in and of themselves. They do show a larger space for computing – that’s what’s important here. The display for the next-generation iPhone will almost certainly be larger than the one we’ve been working with on every iPhone since the device line’s inception, otherwise we’ve got a very, very similar device to the current generation.

For more information on that dock connector, be sure to check out the column Chris Davies whipped up yesterday entitled “Relax, Apple’s new dock connector is a good thing” and check the most recent iPhone posts in the timeline below to get an idea of what we might be seeing later this year!

Analyst: iPhone 5, iPad Mini Coming In September

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Apple’s next-gen iPhone — and the much-talked about (but yet unseen) iPad mini — are some of the most hotly anticipated gadgets of the year. And according to a report by relatively on-point KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new iPhone and iPad mini will launch in September.

Thus far, we’ve heard that the iPhone 5 will have a larger 4.08-inch display maintaining the same width as current models, at 640 pixels. TechCrunch has also confirmed — along with Reuters more recently — that the new iPhone will replace its original 30-pin connector dock with a 19-pin mini port.

The iPad mini, on the other hand, is said to be the same thickness as the iPod touch 4G, with a screen measuring 7.85-inches. He expects that iPad mini sales should hit 1.8 million units during the time its available (1-2 weeks) in Q3.

Of course, Kuo (and the rest of the world) expects Q4 numbers for both products to be ridiculously high, with iPhone projections at 55 million units and iPad estimates hitting 24 million (including both iPad mini, new iPad, and iPad 2).

Here’s Kuo’s official word:

Though shipments of iPad mini’s components will start in August, the new iPad line will end production, ready for transition to a modified New iPad line. As such, component shipments will drop in August as iPad mini’s components shipments growth will be offset. On a side note, the modified New iPad shares the same exterior as the original model, but contains modifications to correct its thermal dissipation problem and lower-cost components.

The September timeline is just a prediction made by this analyst, but it makes sense considering we’ve already heard that the iPhone is in production.

Apple expected to provide 30-pin adapter for the rumored 19-pin dock connector on its next-gen iPhone

iphone_4s and 5Yesterday we reported that there were rumors that suggested once again that Apple could be introducing a 19-pin dock connector for its new iPhone, as opposed to the 30-pin dock connector which has become somewhat standard on Apple’s portable devices (i.e. iPod nano, iPod classic, iPhone, iPad, etc.). Assuming this is true, this might upset many of Apple’s accessory makers as they have created many devices, like speaker docks, stands, and such that rely on the 30-pin dock connector. If you own multiple accessories like that, fret not as there is speculation (via iMore) going on now that suggests that Apple could introduce a dock adapter, allowing older devices to be used with the new iPhone. Relax, Apple’s new dock connector is A Good Thing

In many ways, Apple is an odd goose. The company has a habit of overlong clinging to some ideas while rivals might have jumped ship long before, but then being desperate to shed others ahead of the curve. Ditching floppy drives in favor of CDs, that was driven by Apple; more recently, switching to digital distribution and dumping optical drives in the process on machines like the MacBook Air and new MacBook Pro with Retina Display. And then there’s the Dock Connector.

The 30-pin port has lasted longer than many ideas, cropping up early in the iPod life-cycle and then hanging on through all generations of iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. As a result, it’s also ridiculously outdated: huge in comparison to the tiny microUSB ports on just about all other smartphones, media players and tablets.

Would Apple have kept the current Dock Connector for so long if it didn’t have a thriving third-party accessory ecosystem? That seems unlikely, and the company knew it was onto a gravy train of sorts with the plethora of aftermarket kit that soon flourished for the iPod, iPhone and iPad. Contrast the sheer number of cases, speaker-docks, cables, screen protectors, ridiculous and pointless keychain-charms and other ephemera for the iOS line-up with what third-party firms bothered creating for Zune, Creative’s PMPs or any of the other earnest but soon ejected alternatives to Apple’s media player.

A new port isn’t turnover for the sake of it, mind. Apple seldom dumps something until there’s a replacement lined up, and the Dock Connector will be no different. This time around, wireless has caught up to where wires once led, and so we have AirPlay and AirPlay for Video, along with Bluetooth for those less willing to pay licensing fees for the AirPlay radio tech. The new port might debut on the iPhone 5, but it’ll make a bigger difference to Apple’s iPod nano and iPod touch, which will be able to slim down even further thanks to the smaller connector assembly.

“The adapter will be a carbuncle in your Jony Ive designed life”

It’ll also be a spur to upgrade. Oh sure, there’ll be an adapter to go from shiny new port to old-fashioned connection, but it’ll be a carbuncle in your otherwise sleek, Jony Ive designed life. Accessories that require the iOS device to dock more completely will be out of luck too, as the adapter will presumably add some bulk overall. It’s a sop to existing owners, then, but the expectation is that they’ll upgrade sooner rather than later.

And, while it’s galling to be led by the credit card, that upgrade makes more sense. The smaller port means Apple’s famed aesthetic imagination can run wild again, no longer limited in accommodating the 21mm-long connector. iOS device owners are arguably already used to replacing things like cases when they change iPod or iPhone, too; such is the price of staying on-trend and current. The more frustrating kit will be expensive docking stations, which are coincidentally the items that will work most smoothly with the dock adapter.

There are even whispers of microUSB compatibility for recharging at least, something which in itself could make hundreds of thousands of peoples’ lives more straightforward. Yes, you might need the “proper” cable to sync or hook up with more complex accessories than a charger, but cloud- and wireless-based alternatives to that cord have already proliferated.

So, mourn your current iPod speaker dock if you must, but make no mistake: the Dock Connector as we know it has had its day, and was long-overdue the chopping block.

New iPhone dock connector adapter tipped

Apple will almost certainly be pushing not just a new smaller dock connector with its next-generation iPhone later this year, it seems, it’ll be bringing on a dock adapter as well. This information comes from a source close to the situation speaking with iMore on how the smaller dock connector will facilitate 4G LTE gear as well as a slightly larger battery to make it all stay up to their standards for days of life. This new dock connector would dismiss 5+ years of 30-pin dock connector on the iPhone and all of the accessories that go with it – but 3rd party device makers can rest easy, it appears, as a converter is on the way as well.

Just as each new port on a Mac laptop has a converter Apple is more than willing to provide you with when you want to be backwards-compatible, so too will the new iPhone, aka the iPhone 5, have a converter as well. We’re expecting a smaller piece of tech than the wire-inclusive in-betweens the MacBook line has for their DVI to Mini DisplayPort units, for example, opting instead for a single block. You can see a block Apple’s already made for the conversion from MagSafe to MagSafe 2 in Apple’s online store for just $9.99 USD.

This is an extremely reasonable price and one we sort of hope Apple is considering for the next generation Apple phone. Other converters can range between $30 and $100+ depending on what you want to do with your Apple product, so be prepared for that possibility as well.

Meanwhile have a peek at the timeline below to see other iPhone tips and rumors for the “iPhone 5″ or whatever you want to call it – coming soon!

iPhone 5 to be released on the 21st of September? [Rumor]

Adding to the string of rumors surrounding Apple’s next generation iPhone, a new report is suggesting that the highly anticipated iPhone, dubbed as the iPhone 5, will be released this coming September 21,2012. A French blog site reportedly obtained a piece of information from a Chinese source that specializes in manufacturing iPhone accessories. According to App4phone.fr, Apple allegedly marked September 21 as the specific release date of the iPhone 4S successor.

Additionally, the blog also noted that the new iPhone’s dock connector will be reportedly smaller, confirming our previous reports. Even more interesting is the iPhone 5′s display, which according to the source, will measure 3.75 inches. We are also hearing that the port for the headphone jack will be moved to the lower left corner of the device as well. It’s important to note that these are merely speculations for now. Until Apple sends out invitations for the purported event this coming September, everything here is merely a supposition.

iPhone 5 to Sport 19-Pin Dock Connector?

I’m already avoiding the purchase of new iPhone accessories, other than cases, in preparation for the next iteration of Apple’s iPhone, as there continue to be rumors that Apple’s new dock connector will be a 19-pin port instead of the long-standing universal iOS 30-pin port.

new iphone 19 pin dock connector

One possible reason for this move is to make space for the earphone jack, which is rumored to be moving from the top of the device to the bottom, but it’s also possible that the dock connector is shrinking is to allow for the next iPod nano to get even smaller, or to make room for a bigger battery inside the iPhone. Assuming the iPhone 5 will have an upgraded CPU, larger screen, and 4G connectivity, more power will be a must.

dock connector iphone 30 pin

It’s likely that Apple will make a 30-pin to 19-pin adapter of some sort, which will help for charging and other corded accessories, but that won’t exactly make connecting with existing docking stands practical.

Regardless of reason, this change will certainly make current iPhone users irate, as cables, docks, adapters will all be rendered useless to anyone who upgrades to the next iPhone. Accessory-makers will be happy, since users will have to purchase more things from them.

New iPhone production started in Shanghai

The device code-named iPhone 5 has been tipped as having been ordered for production by Apple by the manufacturing group Pegatron in Shanhai, China. This is not the first time we’ve heard of this group, with the CDMA version of the iPhone contract going to the group in 2010 and the start of 2011 bringing on the 10 million units report for the iPhone 4S (still being called the iPhone 5 back before it was revealed. With their name constantly coming up right alongside Foxconn for Apple device production contracts galore, it’s almost inevitable that both companies would be rumored to be producing the next iPhone.

You’ll want to dive deep into our Pegatron portal to write up a history yourself – meanwhile this newest report has the company ramping up efforts to create the next-level iPhone soon and very soon. The report itself actually includes the company’s lowering of profits and creation of tablets as well, with iPad rumors included too.

“Pegatron is expected to see ODM shipments of notebooks decrease sequentially in third-quarter 2012, and orders for the new version iPhone are enough to make up for decreased revenues from the notebook segment, the sources indicated. Pegatron also has reportedly become the second OEM maker of a new version of iPad, with shipments in the third quarter expected to reach a few million units, the sources indicated.” – Digitimes

This next iPhone, aka the iPhone 5 if you please, will almost certainly have a larger display than past models and will have a brand new dock connector, too. This opens up a whole new segment for Apple at the same time as cutting off 3rd party dock creators of the past. Innovation will have to take hold while these manufacturers swallow their pride and create all new hardware rather than focusing on the docks and connections for the iPhone that they’ve already got out. Stay tuned as the fire starts later this year!
