Next iPhone sees “unprecedented demand” in advance of reveal

For a device that’s not even been formally confirmed to exist by its manufacturer, Apple’s next iPhone is certainly making a splash in ChangeWave‘s most recent report. Asking 4,042 citizens of “mostly” North America this June, ChangeWave found that 14 percent were “very likely” to purchase whatever phone Apple released next for themselves or for someone else. This device is referred to as the iPhone 5 in the study and has already trumped demand for the iPhone 4S according to studies the group did in advance of that device.

Demand for the next iPhone far outweighs what ChangeWave has recorded as demand for the Samsung Galaxy S III, a device that’s already out on the market on all major carriers in the USA. The Samsung Galaxy S III had just 2 percent of respondents saying they’re very likely to purchase the device, with 7 percent saying they’re somewhat likely. There is a “huge surge of momentum” coming from Samsung, on the other hand, with ChangeWave still saying it’s nothing compared to Apple’s next device release anticipation.

Paul Carton, vice president of research at ChangeWave, noted the following on the subject:

“Advance demand for the ‘iPhone 5′ is strikingly higher than we’ve seen for any previous iPhone model. … Overall smartphone sales should spike to an all-time high this fall, and of course Apple is going to be the number one beneficiary, but besides Apple, and to a lesser degree Samsung, no other manufacturer is likely to benefit from this coming wave of demand.” – Carton

Pegatron rumored to have begun production on Apple’s next-gen iPhone

iPhone 5Not too long ago, it was reported that production on the next-gen iPhone had already begun,  and it looks like those claims are now being backed up by a report from DigiTimes, who are saying that Apple’s manufacturing partner, Pegatron, has reportedly begun production on the next-gen iPhone. Of course for those who have followed tech news and rumors, DigiTimes isn’t exactly the most accurate source to date, but they have been proven right in the past which is why we suggest taking this piece of info with a grain of salt. Then again, assuming Apple is keeping to their scheduled release of the iPhone this year, we guess it’s not really a stretch of the imagination to think that production of the handset might have already begun. Either way be sure to check back with us for more news and updates on the iPhone 5!

More reports of a 19-pin dock connector for Apple’s next-gen iPhone surfaces

iphone_4s and 5Back in February this year, there were rumors that suggested that Apple could be making the dock connector of their next iPhone smaller than the current one. This was further cemented by a job listing that indicated that a redesign of the dock connector could be in the works, although there was nothing to say if it would be making an appearance in the next iPhone or if it would be used for future models. Thanks to recently surfaced photos of alleged housings for the next-gen iPhone, the smaller dock connector rumor seemed to gain more traction and now thanks to the folks at Reuters, it seems that they too think that the next-gen iPhone will feature a smaller 19-pin dock connector as opposed to the 30-pin version. Reuters: Apple Shrinking iPhone Connector to 19-Pin Port [Rumors]

The idea of Apple ditching the current 30-pin iPhone connection in favor of something smaller has been floating around for some time. Now, Reuters is reporting that the next iPhone will feature a new, 19-pin connection. More »

iPhone 5 mini dock connector talk snowballs

Talk of a new, smaller Apple dock connector to debut on the iPhone 5 continues to gather pace, with new sources saying the next-gen smartphone will indeed switch to a more compact port despite potential fury from accessory owners. Technical details on the port are still in general a mystery, but two insider sources tell Reuters that the iPhone 5 will indeed ditch the existing 30-pin connector that has been standard across many iPods and all generations of iPhone and iPad, so as to make space for a headphone jack on the bottom edge. However, while accessory manufacturers are rubbing their hands together in glee at the thought of a new wave of add-on-sales, users may be less enthused.

The existing port is 21mm wide and takes up much of the bottom edge of the iPhone 4S, leaving only space for speaker grills either side. By switching to a smaller, 19-pin connector instead, Apple could free up space for the headphone socket while still keeping the twin grills.

Evidence of such a design has already been seen, albeit from third-party case manufacturers, who have been showing off prototype iPhone 5 cases that have cutouts for the smaller dock connector. Subsequent talk from engineers suggested that Apple would take advantage of the new connection not only for design reasons, but to enact a new “authorized accessory” program that would lock out unlicensed devices.

Both factors could mean big business for those selling iPhone accessories. Although Apple is expected to also deliver a dock connector adapter – similar to its approach with the smaller MagSafe 2 power connection on the latest MacBook Pro with Retina Display and MacBook Air – that may well prove too inelegant for owners. It could also lack compatibility with new accessories natively supporting the smaller dock port, only allowing the iPhone 5 to use older accessories, not older iPhones from connecting to newer accessories.

Whether owners will be enamored by the idea of replacing their speaker docks, spare chargers and other gadgets remains to be seen. Apple is expected to reveal the iPhone 5 in October.

Verizon’s CFO might have hinted at a Q4 iPhone 5 launch

Assuming Apple keeps to the same schedule as they did back in 2011 when they launched the iPhone 4S, it is safe to assume that the next-gen iPhone will be launched around the same time this year. As usual Apple has kept mum on these sorts of things but thanks to Verizon’s CFO, he may have hinted at a release in Q4 later this year. This was revealed during Verizon’s conference call discussing its Q2 2012 financial performance and when asked what might have held some customers back from upgrading their devices, he was quoted as saying, “of course there’s always that, uh, rumor mill out there with a new phone coming out there in the fourth quarter, so people may be waiting.”

There is a slight chance that he might be referring to the next-gen Android handset which assuming they’re keeping to schedule, could also be seeing a Q4 release but then again, the rumor mill has been churning out more iPhone rumors than Nexus rumors as of late, so it would be safe to assume that he was referring to the iPhone. It should be noted that this is hardly a confirmation, but it’s good to know that Verizon’s CFO seems to think that a Q4 launch does seem likely.

Carriers rumored to be testing nano-SIMs for the next-gen iPhone

A couple of days ago we reported on a rumor that European carriers were stockpiling nano-SIMs in anticipation of the iPhone 5. Now it seems that the rumors have been taken up one level as there are now reports (via BGR) that Apple is supplying various carriers with nano-SIM adapters so that the carriers will be able to test how the nano-SIMs work on their networks. With Apple submitting its own nano-SIM design to be used as a standard, many have believed that the nano-SIM could be making its way into the next-gen iPhone. With a smaller SIM card, it is expected that it should give Apple a bit more space to work with in which they will be able to add other features into the phone that they previously might not have been able to, such as 4G LTE, a larger battery, etc. Of course all of this is simply rumor for now since nothing can be confirmed yet, so we suggest you take this with a grain of salt for now until the iPhone 5 (or whatever it’s going to be called) has been revealed.

Next iPhone to feature nano-SIM, Verizon hints at Q4 debut

Earlier this week it was reported that European carriers were stockpiling new nano-SIM cards after the standard had been approved by the ETSI. Speculation followed that Apple was preparing nano-SIM usage for the next iPhone, with one source even claiming that Apple had already designed the next iPhone around its own unapproved nano-SIM standard. Now BGR claims to have heard from carrier sources confirming that the next iPhone will indeed utilize nano-SIMs.

BGR claims to have heard from multiple carriers sources saying that “Apple is supplying nano-SIM adapters” so that the companies can test the compatibility on their networks. That will give the carriers a chance to make sure everything works smoothlys before a full scale deployment with the release of the next iPhone. AT&T is said to be one of the carriers testing testing the new nano-SIMs.

The CFO of Verizon, Fran Shammo, also dropped a hint during today’s earnings conference call that the next iPhone may make an appearance sometime in the fourth quarter. That falls in line with past reports that indicate the next iPhone would make a debut in September or October, mirroring the introduction of the iPhone 4S and sticking to Apple’s one year cycle between new handsets.

New iPhone cases bet on a non-iPod port

This week over in the land of pre-release device accessory makers, a couple new iPhone (or iPhone 5, whatever you want to call it) cases have been revealed with the smartphone’s new form factor intact. This case, coming in two colors – simple black and white – shows the iPhone in a taller form with many of the same features as the iPhone 4/4S. This device has a back-facing camera hole with enough room for a flash bulb, a lock-screen switch hole above volume buttons, and the same width as in previous models.

The big differences come in the places we’ve been tipped several times now will be getting big changes, starting with the base of the device. Instead of there being one giant space for an iPod cord, instead we’ve got a much smaller port more consistent with the size of a microUSB cord. Of course we know Apple will not likely adopt that kind of cord, instead opting for their own next-generation connection with 16 pins instead.

To the right and the left of this hole at the bottom of the device’s case, you’ve got two more holes, one of them with a circle carved into it for a headphone jack. There you’ll find the jack at the bottom of the device instead of at the top where it’s always been for the iPhone, and the square bits are ready for speaker grille action.

This device setup is consistent with several other recent design concepts we’ve seen for the next-generation iPhone, complete with enough height to provide for a 4-inch display on top of everything else. Note here that the case in this post is likely manufactured with specifications guessed or distributed without the consent of Apple, so it’s really a bet on the part of the creators of this case whether or not it’ll be accurate when the time comes and the next iPhone is revealed.

Have a peek at the new iPhone timeline below to keep up with the tips, leaks, and rumors!

A Wide Variety Of iPhone 5 Cases Are Now Available, All Show A Taller, More Slender iPhone Is Coming

480965527_413

Anyone want an iPhone 5 case? A bunch of manufacturers are currently taking orders and shipping nearly every style from cheap silicon sleeves to hard shell Hello Kitty cases. All of them feature a design taller than that of the iPhone 4S and most of them make room for a smaller dock connector.

As the next iPhone approaches, Apple will start handing out specs to trusted accessory makers. That could have already happened. After all, this move is a standard operating procedure to ensure the phone launches with strong accessory support. But these cases are now available for purchase as long as buyers are willing to order them in bulk.

Alibaba currently lists several dozen cases listed as for the iPhone 5. As a b2b connecting platform, Alibaba serves as a marketplace for bulk items sold from a direct supplier. Want a thousand 15.5 gallon beer kegs? Click here. How about a cheap Android tablet? Or even a fleet of racing ATVs? Alibaba is where the brands and retailers go shopping and they can start stocking up on iPhone 5 cases now.

Leaked cases have long plagued Apple launches. They prematurely revealed the iPhone 4′s new design and the iPad 2′s larger speaker. Leaked cases revealed the iPod touch and nano were getting a camera.

The iPhone 5, or whatever it will be called, is rumored to launch this fall as early as September. And with cases already available, it will likely launch sooner versus later.
