Next iPhone reportedly features LTE, NFC, and 1GB of RAM

We’ve seen a bevy of leaks and reports regarding the next iteration of Apple’s iPhone, and now some more information has come to light regarding the manufacturing of the sequel to the iPhone 4S. BGR reports that the next-generation iPhone is currently in the EVT3 phase. That means that engineering samples are still being used at this point in time, with the “design verification tests” still needing to be passed before the phone can go into full-scale production.

Even when the phone hits DVT, it can go through multiple iterations as engineers try to iron out any problems with the phone. The main piece of information to take away is that the iPhone hasn’t yet entered final production, so the leaked backplates that we’ve seen may not be the final story. Additionally, BGR has confirmed that the next iPhone will feature LTE connectivity, as well as NFC support. RAM has also reportedly been doubled from 512MB to 1GB.

Several reports have indicated that Apple plans to increase the size of the next iPhone to the 4-inch range. The resolution of the display will also be increased to 1136×640, marking a shift to a 16:9 ratio. Core iOS 6 apps will be redesigned to take advantage of the additional vertical space, and Apple will reportedly encourage developers to do the same when it unveils the change. Leaked backplates for the next iPhone have suggested a design not too far removed from the iPhone 4S, but with a two-toned aluminium back. The phone will also feature a smaller 19-pin dock connector and redesigned speaker holes.

iPhone 5: a July round-up of pre-release leaks, tips, and rumors

It’s time to take another look at what Apple’s next-generation iPhone is squaring up to be, and which rumors, tips, and leaks are looking good enough to take heed in. Several notions about the iPhone 5, or whatever it’ll end up being called, have been solidified in the glimpse of iOS 6 we’ve seen already this summer, starting with Apple Maps. This iPhone will take one of the last bits of software dominance that the Android platform had thus far been holding over Apple’s head and will make it all the better for the time iOS lovers spent without it.

Next you’ll find that iOS 6 allows the iPhone to be a video chat machine not just when you’re in a Wi-fi area, but at least inside your 3G zones across the earth as well. By the time the iPhone 5 is released, this ability may well be spread to 4G LTE as well, we’ll just have to wait and see. The next-generation iPhone will have essentially the same look on the inside, with a few software tweaks, but its outside is still very much up to debate.

It’s been tipped several times that this iPhone will have a larger screen, something like 4+ inches this time around, but whether or not this will have an effect on the device’s width is seeming to fall in favor of being the same width of the iPhone 4S as it stands now. This device will simply be taller, not fatter. And it certainly won’t be thicker, with the most recent tip being that this device will be the thinnest iPhone yet, bordering on the thinness of the iPod touch.

Each of the images above and below come from the post iPhone 5 renders show most amazing vision yet. They’re not official renders, and they’re not photographs, they’re just fabulous.

The front of the device will more than likely be glass like previous iPhones have been, while the back will likely have a combination of glass and aluminum. The center of the device’s back has been leaked as being a lovely sheet of aluminum in a possible couple different shades of gray, while the top and bottom of the device on the back will be glass to allow signals to sneak in and out. The back of the device will also likely have a next-level camera of some sort with 1080p video recording abilities as well.

Have a peek at our timeline below to get up to date on all things iPhone 5, and stay tuned!

WSJ: Next iPhone to have even thinner screen

WSJ: Next iPhone to have even thinner screen

Apple’s next smartphone iteration will reportedly pack new screen technology that shaves a small amount from the screen thickness. According to the Wall Street Journal‘s sources, the new in-cell technology integrates the touch sensor into the screen, shedding around half a millimeter and due to the reduced space between screen and user, could well improve image quality. Although a mere 0.5 mm reduction may not mean much for the phone’s frame, it could help offset any weight added by a larger screen. The Wall Street Journal also reports that the still-LCD screens will be made by joint venture Japan Display, LG Display and Sharp. Manufacturers are apparently battling to maintain high-yield rates on the new screen technology, which until now has been limited to bigger displays. Hit up the source for the full report.

In-cell displays for the next-gen iPhone rumored to be in mass production

It has been rumored  in the past that the next-gen iPhone could very well feature an in-cell display technology, making the iPhone thinner and possibly lighter at the same time, and improving image quality as well. While that remains to be seen, a report at the Wall Street Journal has revealed that it may very well be the case, and that mass production of said displays have already begun. They have named manufacturers such as Sharp, Japan Display Inc. (a joint effort of Sony, Hitachi and Toshiba) and LG Display as being the ones responsible for the in-cell display technology used for the next-gen iPhone. This seems to corroborate earlier rumors of Sony’s involvement, but will this report pan out? After all it’s not surprising to see iPhone rumors running rampant around this time of the year, but until Apple launches the phone in an official capacity, we suggest taking this with a grain of salt for now.

European carriers reportedly stockpiling nano SIMs in anticipation of the iPhone 5

A while back there was a big fuss over the nano SIM standard, with Apple trying to impose their own standard while other manufacturers like Nokia, Motorola and RIM were not too pleased and tried to introduce a standard of their own. Some are speculating that the new nano SIM could be making an appearance in Apple’s next-gen iPhone, but since nothing can be confirmed, it is merely speculation for now. However it seems that European carriers are reportedly placing orders for the nano SIMs in anticipation of the iPhone 5 which is expected to see a release in September/October later this year, and are stockpiling the SIM cards in their warehouses. Might they be getting ahead of themselves? Either way we guess we will have to wait until the iPhone launches to see if it will be adopting the new nano SIM design, so stay tuned!

Next iPhone tipped for thinner screen as carriers stock up on nano-SIMs

Current reports indicate that Apple will move to a larger screen on the next iPhone, bringing with it an increase in resolution. Now the Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is planning to use a new type of touchscreen that’s thinner than current technologies. Sharp, Japan Display, and LG are all said to be producing in-cell touch panels for the next iPhone, according to sources familiar with the matter.

In-cell technology integrates the touch sensors directly into the LCD, negating the need for an additional touch layer which adds thickness to the screen. The difference is only around 0.5mm, but the removal of that layer will also result in improved screen quality. In addition, the Wall Street Journal says that Apple’s supply chain would be simplified, and that the company would ultimately cut costs as a result of the move.

That space could allow for the device to be slightly thinner, or give Apple extra space for additional components. The use of an even smaller SIM card would also give Apple more room to play with, and European carriers are reportedly stocking up on the nano-SIM that was recently approved. The going theory is that Apple will use the new standard in the next iPhone, with the nano-SIM being 40% smaller than current micro-SIMs. The crucial piece of information to take away is that Apple reportedly designed the next iPhone around the new nano-SIM, which puts the standard war with RIM, Motorola, and Nokia into a whole new perspective.

The next iPhone is said to have 3.95-inch screen with a 1136×640 resolution, a move to an aspect ratio close to 16:9. Leaked backplates show that the handset will feature a two tone aluminium back, as well as a new 19-pin dock connector and what look to be machine drilled speaker and microphone holes. The core apps of iOS6 will take advantage of the new resolution, and Apple will reportedly encourage developers to redesign their own apps to do the same.

WSJ: iPhone 5 Will Use Super-Thin Screen Technology [Rumors]

There are plenty of iPhone rumors floating around, hinting at everything from a bigger screen to NFC capability. Now, the Wall Street Journal is reporting that the next iPhone will feature new screen technology to keep it slim. More »

Possible photo of next-generation white iPhone front leaked?

Rumors of new Apple devices surface almost daily. Whether it be the iPad Mini or iPhone 5, people are getting really excited by the next Apple product. Apple.Pro, a recurring part leaker, has just discovered a photo of a claimed next-generation iPhone front, which has a couple of interesting features.

To start, this is the firs time a white iPhone 5 model or front has surfaced, which will please many ‘white iPhone” fans.  Another interesting feature is the fact that the FaceTime camera has been shifted left and is now above the speaker. It’s not much of a change, but who knows what other features could be included internally.

Of course we don’t know for sure if this is actually the front of the iPhone 5 and we won’t know until it actually comes out officially, but this very well could be an Apple design change as it is minimal and looks more natural.

What do you think of this design change? Let us know in the comments section and we’ll keep you updated as more info becomes available.

“Leaked” iPhone 5 Front Casing Shows Centered FaceTime Camera

Screen shot 2012-07-16 at 9.58.57 AM

Another day, another leak.

On Friday we saw what was reported to be an iPhone 5 prototype unit, and today an entirely different version of the “iPhone 5″ casing has found its way on to the interwebs. Oddly enough, this latest leak looks an awful lot like images of iPhone 5 parts published by 9to5mac.

Of course, it’s possible that none of these leaks are the real thing, but it sure does help pass the time until Apple hops on stage in October. The latest leak comes by way of a Chinese site called Apple.pro who seemingly found the images on Photobucket. No one working at Apple would post a picture of the iPhone 5 on Photobucket, though that’s not to say that someone in the supply chain didn’t snap a pic or two.

Either way, I’m approaching this leak as I have all the others — with a massive salt shaker.

There are two “leaked” cases here: one white and one black. They show that the front-facing camera for video chat has been centered above the speaker grill. This matches up splendidly with images shown by 9to5mac, especially since this image also shows a taller screen with the same exact width and bezels as the iPhone 4/4S.

We’ve heard previously that the next-gen iPhone will have an aluminum (or metal) back panel, matching up more uniformly with the iPad and other Apple products. TechCrunch has also exclusively confirmed that the usual 30-pin dock will be replaced with a 19-pin mini connector. And lest we forget, a 4.08-inch display is also expected. Macotokara reports that production on the iPhone 5 has already begun, so we should see this bad boy no later than October, if not earlier.

Here is a larger version of this latest leak:

And here’s that 9to5mac pic that seems to line up:

iPhone 5 back shows glass and aluminum panels

This weekend there’s been another set of details dropped on top of a very tiny image that shows what the top back of the device is set to look like. This next generation iPhone will have two glass panels on the back on top and bottom of a larger aluminum panel, with the glass panel at the top having a single LED flash and large lens for it’s back-facing camera.

This device image is certainly a prototype for the device that Macotakara says its sources are saying is near production. Manufacturing plans in China have been reported to be getting prepared for the start of production for the iPhone 5, and several leaks over the past couple of weeks have lent themselves to the same idea – that this device will be taller, but not fatter, than the previous iPhone models iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.

This device has been said to have at least a dual-core processor (as the iPhone 4S does now with the A5 manufactured by Samsung) with many reports suggesting this next-generation architecture will feature four CPU cores instead. This device will also have a dock connector on its bottom that’s the first in the Apple mobile line not working with the 30-pin connectors that’ve been on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touches since the start.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see additional tips and leaks dealing with the iPhone 5 (or whatever it’ll end up being called) and stay tuned for more!
