This Probably Isn’t The iPhone 5, But It Looks A Lot Like What We Expect

94|000023cdc|eaf4_iPhone-5-vs-iPhone-4S-02

As iPhone season amps up — and make no mistake, the rumor mill is already spinning at full speed — we’re bound to see “leak” after “leak.” The latest comes by way of a site called KitGuru.net, which claims to have a “test unit” of the device. That’s about where the post lost me, not to mention the fact that the image looks Photoshopped.

But let’s just set that aside for a moment. The images shown actually take into account most of what we’ve seen/heard before. The iPhone 5 is expected to have a larger screen with the same 640px width, and we also expect a new 19-pin mini connector instead of the usual 30-pin port.

So while 97 percent of me believes this isn’t the real deal (I’m not a total cynic), it’s still valuable to have a clearer look at what’s expected, even in blurry form. The real value is seeing the “iPhone 5 test unit” alongside an iPhone 4S. This should give fanbois a nice comparison look at what’s expected to be a 4.08-inch display.

Again, I would be heart-attack-style surprised to find out that KitGuru was playing around with an early iPhone 5 unit. That just doesn’t happen. But it’s somewhat strange that the site pulled the post. Trusted Reviews speculates that the pull-down has something to do with Apple’s involvement, whereas I’m thinking the site is trying to get a little extra credibility by acting like Apple requested the post removal.

In either case, the images are in line with the more dominant rumors out there so I suggest getting comfortable with the new size and ports. Whether this image is real or a hoax (and methinks it’s a hoax), those new features are likely to be true.

New iPhone 5 picture surfaces?

iPhone 5It’s time for another dose of iPhone 5 rumors – the folks over at KitGuru seemed to have landed themselves a photograph supposedly showing the iPhone 5 next to an iPhone 4S. The device photographed is claimed to be a test sample of the device and shows off the phone’s larger display and taller shape. There’s no telling if we’re looking at the real deal or a knockoff iPhone but I guess we’ll find out in due time. What do you think of the iPhone 5 in the photograph above? Would it be something that you’d pick up on day one?

iPhone 5 body model leaks with glass front

Today it appears that another pre-release model of the 2012 iPhone, aka the iPhone 5, has been photographed and leaked to the web, full glass front and brand new docking port in-tact. This device appears to be the same Apple smartphone we’ve been seeing several times in the past few weeks save the front panel being much more simple than the three-panel option that popped up once or twice. With a single home button, mini or microSIM card slot, volume up/down buttons and screen lock surrounding the device’s exterior, this looks to be pretty much the next step for the iPhone if ever have we seen one before.

What this device, if indeed these photos from KitGugu are real, also shows off is a slightly darker metal band around its entire body, though this may also be a feature that’s only present in this model and not yet perfected for the final release.

The display on this model appears to be right around 4-inches – compared in the image above to the iPhone 4/4S which looks measly in comparison, and the bottom shows off its brand new couple of features that include not only a couple of speaker grills made of machined holes, but two of what appear to be POGO pin holes as well as a headphone jack.

There down on the bottom also sits the new Apple 16-pin port, this changed over from the much more massive port we’ve seen on the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch since back when they were each introduced. This device appears to be the same width and thickness as the current iPhone 4/4S and also appears to be the same width as well.

Expect a whole lot more before this device pops up – it’s a leak festival if ever we have seen one!

New 2012 iPhone body reportedly leaks, gives the glass front its time to shine

New reported 2012 iPhone body leaks, gives the glass front its time to shine

Remember that tall, mostly aluminum 2012 iPhone shell that appeared to have leaked? It’s back. This time, KitGuru has unearthed what it claims is a “test sample” with the glass front panel roughly intact. We’ve seen the darker steel sides, aluminum back and new dock connector before, but the front gives us a much better sense of how the finished product (if real) will turn out. Sitting next to an iPhone 4S, it’s suggested that the new model would stuff in that bigger screen more through a better use of the available area — there’s much less blank space than on the iPhones we’ve known since 2007. While we still don’t know for sure if the design shown here is close to what will go hand-in-hand with iOS 6 in the fall, we’re starting to see enough smoke that there’s bound to be a fire nearby.

SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up: July 11, 2012

Start your morning off right with our review of Small Sonos – and ask yourself if you really need multiple speakers for music around your home. Over in China it appears that there may have been some iPad Mini and iPhone 5 device models photographed and leaked from within a manufacturing plant. Microsoft has announced that Halo 4 will work with Surface devices as its released later this year.

The Kickstarter-started Android-based gaming cube known as Ouya is now open to suggestions as funds blast past $2 million dollars USD. Apple products will no longer be able to be purchased with city funds in San Francisco as Apple breaks ties with environmental group EPEAT. The Angry Birds franchise will soon be appearing on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and Nintendo 3DS in a whole new release for console-specific gaming.

If you’ve got DirecTV, you may have noticed already: Viacom has pulled Nichelodeon as well as 16 other channels this week. Samsung will be offering a Samsung Galaxy S III Developer Edition with the ability to work with Verizon bands soon – unlocked bootloaders for all!

The folks at T-Mobile have announced the myTouch and myTouch Q for this summer, both of them made by Huawei! The CEO of Jolla Mobile has let it be known that the mobile operating system known as MeeGo will be living on through his company. HTC has announced a follow-up tablet coming to the UK, a follow-up to the HTC Flyer, that is.

A new LG device (probably with 4G LTE capabilities) has leaked for Verizon – the LG VS930, aka Optimus Something-or-other, will be coming your way soon! Apple has announced which devices will be upgradable to OS X Mountain Lion this fall – bad news for the Mac minis released before 2009. The folks at iSuppli have stepped forward with their own pricing scale for the Google Nexus 7 at $151.75 for parts – much lower than the TechInsights price of $184.

Have a peek also at Chris Davies’ piece this morning called The Price of Privacy.

iPad Mini and iPhone 5 pre-production models appear in China

Both the fabled iPad Mini and the iPhone 5 from Apple appear to have been leaked today from a manufacturing plant in China, with prefab models being leaked in blurry photo form. While it’s not out of the question that both of these mobile models could indeed be in model stages (or that their molds would still be out there somewhere if they’re near production), we encourage you to go heavy on the grains of salt with this particular situation. On the other hand, both models appear, courtesy of GottaBeMobile to replicate closely what we’ve seen before in image leaks for both the iPhone 5 and the iPad Mini.

What we’re seeing here, or what we’re being shown here by a relatively skilled creator of 3D-modeled products. The iPad Mini, up first, shows two speaker grilles across the bottom of the device with a single tiny dock connector that we must assume is the much-hyped but not yet confirmed 19-pin dock connector that Apple may or may not be introducing with the iPad Mini and the iPhone 5 this Autumn. The iPad Mini will essentially have around a 7.85-inch display, will be about 2/3 the size of the current iPad, and will be just about 4/5 as thick.

The iPhone 5, on the other hand, does not appear to be made of the same 3D-modeling plastic that the iPad Mini does. Instead we’ve got one solid hunk of what must be aluminum. The only reason we can think of that this device model would be made of one big hunk of metal would be that it’s set up for some sort of process which involves great amounts of heat – don’t want it to melt!

You’ll want to hit up our [iPhone 5 portal] to see everything we’ve seen on what could potentially be happening with this next-generation smartphone. For iPad Mini news, head to the timeline below and have yourself a feast!

Photographs of iPhone 5 engineering samples leaked?

iPhone 5 engineering sampleIf you want a look at what the upcoming iPhone is going to look like, the folks over at Gotta Be Mobile might have the answer. The folks were recently sent some photographs showing off what is claimed to be an iPhone 5 engineering sample straight from a factory in China. If these images are the real deal, it looks like people who were looking forward to a radically redesigned new iPhone will have to wait another year or more.

iPhone 5 set for quad-core A6 chip

At some point in the year 2012, Apple is getting set to release a brand new iPhone, or that’s what the rumor mill would have you believe, this time packed with a massive quad-core A6 chip. This time of year is always going to see its fair share of iPhone rumors, or it certainly will if DigiTimes, the source for this current tip, has anything to say about it. With leaks of information that are sometimes right on the money as far as Apple factory parts news goes, it’s always interesting to hear what this often China-based news source has to say.

What this particular update includes is a new bit of processor architecture which would represent a next generation of chips for the Apple smartphone (and perhaps iPad) device line. The iPhone 4S was the last smartphone to get a big chip upgrade with the Apple A5, that being a dual-core 800Mhz processor with immense power for games, graphics, and photo and video processing. The iPad 3rd generation release had a slightly upgraded chip as well, the dual-core A5X with improvements for the Retina quality display the newest iPad came with standard.

It’s not out of the question that Apple would amp up the power of their architecture under the hood to four cores, but there is a question of necessity. While the quad-core craze was started by NVIDIA with their Tegra 3 processor for mobile devices, the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 dual-core chip has been more than just a sideline competitor for the game-ready Tegra gear.

As far as brand power goes, Apple has been more than ready to turn a dual-core processor into a quad-core with a simple twisting of words – you’ll find the advertising for the A5X chip to be focusing on the graphics processing units instead of the CPU components, while the Tegra 3′s quad-core refers to the fact that there are four CPU cores, not GPUs.

So stay tuned, folks, as the next iPhone – perhaps the iPhone 5 – gets closer and closer to reality. Check the timeline below for further leaks, tips, and rumors galore!

Sorry, T-Mobile Customers: No iPhone 5 For You. Yet [Iphone 5]

T-mobile customers may have the displeasing distinction of being the only mobile subscribers not to get their paws on the much-hyped and forthcoming iPhone 5. Bummer. More »

Latest iPhone prototypes reportedly feature NFC

One of the features that Apple demoed at WWDC 2012 was PassBook for iOS 6. The app would store gift vouchers from various retail stores and other services that could be redeemed by scanning the code on the phone. 9to5Mac has discovered that NFC controllers are currently being used in iPhone prototypes. The latest piece of information was spotted after they took a closer look at hardware code dumps.

Putting two and two together, it’s not hard to imagine that Apple may make a big play for the mobile payments market. Combining NFC hardware with PassBook’s ability to store vouchers (and potentially credit card information) would allow Apple to offer wireless payments straight from future iPhones. That would put it against offerings such as Google Wallet, and Microsoft’s own wallet feature in Windows Phone 8.

Patents have detailed Apple’s intent to offer an “iWallet” in the past, although that would see the company making customers manage financial information through iTunes. 9to5Mac was also previously tipped by a developer, saying that Apple was working on NFC behind the scenes in addition to hiring the necessary talent to make everything work.
